  • Messaging pattern question

    Process A is calculating values for objects a1, a2, a3 etc. and is sending results to the middleware queue (RabbitMQ). Consumers read the queue and process these results further. Periodically process A has to send a snapshot of these values, so consumers could do some other calculations. Values for these objects might change independently. The queue might look like this a1, a1, a2, a1, a2, a2, a3... Consumers process each item in the queue. The snapshot has to contain all objects and consumers will process this message for all objects in one go. So the requirement is to have a queue like this: a1, a1, a3, a2, a2, [snapshot, a1, a2, a3], a3, a1 ... The problem is that these items are of different types: one type for objects like a1, a2 and other for a snapshot. This means that they should be processed in a diferent queues, but in that case there is a race condition: consumers might process objects before processing a snapshot. Is there any pattern to solve this (quite common) problem? We are using RabbitMQ for message queueing.

  • How do you handle files that can't support concurrent edits in Mercurial?

    I'm using Mercurial with TortoiseHg. Each developer has their own repositories, and there's one central repository on the server for synchronizing our changes. (This will sound lame, but we're using it to manage the source for a legacy VB6 project. Nothing we can do about that...) As has been pointed out elsewhere, there is a big problem in VB6 with merging the .frx (form resources) files. So code changes seem to merge fine, but if two developers both make changes at the same time in the form design view, we can't merge. I'm ok with disallowing concurrent edits, but of course the whole point of Mercurial is that it's distributed so there is no option to force a file to be locked before editing. I don't believe there's a Mercurial solution for this, so I'm wondering: other developers who are using Mercurial for version control, do you have some 3rd party tool that assists with locking files for editing in the cases where it's necessary? Did we make a mistake using Mercurial instead of something like SVN?

    Does anyone know of a TFS 2010 Dashboard that is able to utilize multi-project queries? Our group has several distinct projects that must be managed at the same time. TFS itself supports this. Simply by excluding the Project = @Project (or whatever) we can get back the results we're looking for. Our issue is that we would like to find a nice dashboard (like Telerik Work Item Manager) that also supports this.

    Hi, This is probably a simple problem for the high skilled Cocoa programmers, but I can't find how to control the graph in a separate window. I read carefully the Cocoa related books, go through many web notes,but I can't find a solution to my problem. The purpose is to use a dedicated window to draw the I=F(Vg) curves extracted by the GUI from a specific hardware. All the GUI and the hardware works fine ( thanks to the help provided by several members of stackoverflow) , but no way to send the parameters to the NSView to display the results. So far, the GUI class is based on a NSObject, the graphic class is NSView. Any idea, examples, links will be appreciated. Thank you so much. Michael

I already know the syntax of how to instantiate the object & execute the methods: data: my_object type ole2_object. create object my_object <ole2object>. call method of my_object <objectmethod>. But given a particular application, how do I know if this is supported, what the values/names of ole2object and objectmethod is? Transaction SOLE supplies a table of OLE Applications, among this is Excel.Application which I know can be instantiated as an OLE object, so it looks like you have to add the OLE2 app to this table first, but once again where can I read the data like CLSID & LibType from - is it published as part of the application?

  • jPlayer problem in Firefox - also throws error from jQuery?! Not related to OGG support.

    I've been working on a small SVG website, http://docroot.ca/ - the SVG part has been working out pretty well. In the current site, jPlayer is called and given an mp3. jPlayer functions properly in Safari, Chrome, and Opera, but not Firefox which throws the following two errors: Error: not well-formed Source File: Line: 1, Column: 191 Source Code: <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><embed name="jqjp_flash_0" id="jqjp_flash_0" src="js/Jplayer.swf" width="0" height="0" bgcolor="#ffffff" quality="high" FlashVars="id=jPlayerBox&fid=jqjp_flash_0&vol=80" allowScriptAccess="always" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /></ and: Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... In designing the system, I must take into consideration: Two types of input: standard shooter controls (lots of buttons being pressed and raw samples collected) and flight sim controls (the button's label is what the user presses to toggle something) Alternative software keyboard layouts (dvorak, azerty, etc) as supplied by the OS Alternative hardware keyboard layouts that supply Unicode characters My initial inclination is to sample the USB HID unicode scancodes. Interested on thoughts on what I need to do to be compatible with the world's input devices and recommendation of input APIs on both platforms.

An object serialized in a SOAP XML datamodel can hold a reference (pointer) to another object in the same SOAP message. I want to try the same approach in a C# WCF-project, can it be done? I want to do the equivalent of Object.toQueryString() from Prototype: I need this to encode parameters for GET and POST requests with YAHOO.util.Connect. It turns out YAHOO.util.Connect has a setForm() method to serialize a form but that still leaves me out cold to encode parameters for GET requests, or the 4th parameter of YAHOO.util.Connect.asyncRequest() to pass post data.

    When uploading files to Amazon S3 using the browser http upload feature, I know I can specify a success_action_redirect field/value that will tell my browser where to go when the upload is done. I'm wondering: is it possible to ask Amazon to make a web hook style POST request to my web server whenever a file gets uploaded? Basically, I want a way of being notified whenever a client uploads a new file, so that my server can process the upload. I'd like to do this without relying on the client to make the request to my server to tell me the file has been uploaded (never trust the client, right?).

    Goal: Install Hunchentoot and be able to run Hunchentoot as a background thread. This is what I do: Install Common Lisp. Install Quicklisp. (ql:quickload "hunchentoot") (hunchentoot:start (make-instance 'hunchentoot:acceptor :port 4242)) The last command is supposed to start Hunchentoot, then return to the interpreter for further Common Lisp forms. For CLISP, SBCL, ABCL, ECL, and CCL, I get one of two results: Hunchentoot's dependency Bordeaux Threads fails to install. hunchentoot:start hangs. The web page never loads, and never 404s.
