  Since it is Predictive Analytics World in our backyard (or are we San Francisco’s backyard…?) I figured it is well worth the time to dust of some old but important news. With big data (should we start calling it “any data analytics” instead?) being the buzz word and analytics the key operative goal, not moving data around is becoming more and more critical to the business users. Why? Because instead of spending time on moving data around into your next analytics server you should be running analytics on those CPUs. You could always do this with Oracle Data Mining within the Oracle Database. But a lot of folks want to leverage R as their main tool. Well, this article describes how you can do this, since 2010… As Casimir Saternos concludes in the article; “There is a growing awareness of the need to effectively analyze astronomical amounts of data, much of which is stored in Oracle databases.   Fault Handling It is one thing to architect, design, and code the “happy flow” of your automated business processes and services. It is another thing to deal with situations you do not want or expect to occur in your processes and services. This session dives into fault handling in Oracle Service Bus 11g and Oracle SOA Suite 11g, based on an order-to-cash business process. Faults can be divided into business faults, technical faults, programming errors, and faulty user input. Each type of fault needs a different approach to prevent them from occurring or to deal with them. For example, apply User Experience (UX) techniques to improve the quality of your application so that faulty user input can be prevented as much as possible. This session shows and demos what patterns and techniques can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite to prevent and handle technical faults as well as business faults. Q&A This section lists answers to the questions that were raised during the preview event. Q: Where can retries be configured in Oracle Service Bus? The retry mechanism is used to prevent faults caused by temporary glitches such as short network interruptions. A faulted message is resend (retried) and might succeed this time since the glitch has passed. Retries are an out-of-the-box feature that can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite using the Fault Policy framework. By default, retries are disabled in Oracle Service Bus.   Continuing from Embedded Nashorn in JEditorPane, here is the same JEditorPane on steroids with Nashorn, in the context of some kind of CMS backend system: Above, you see heavy reusage of NetBeans IDE editor infrastructure. Parts of it are with thanks to Steven Yi, who has done some great research in this area. Code completion, right-click popup menu, line numbering, editor toolbar, find/replace features, block selection, comment/uncomment features, etc, etc, etc, all the rich editor features from NetBeans IDE are there, within a plain old JEditorPane. And everything is externally extensible, e.g., new actions can be registered by external modules into the right-click popup menu or the editor toolbar or the sidebar, etc. For example, here's code completion (Ctrl-Space): It even has the cool new feature where if you select a closing brace and the opening brace isn't in the visible area, a rectangular popup appears at the top of the editor, to show how the current piece of code begins: The only thing I am missing is code folding! I wish that would work too, still figuring it out. What's also cool is that this is a Maven project. • Opportunities in Cloud Computing

  A recent article from CIO Journal indicates that there is an extreme labor shortage (in certain technology areas) that is is leading to upward pressure on wages for IT Workers. This represents a great opportunity for those with certain skill-sets, among which include Java (Oracle certification is mentioned specifically). The article points out that a key driver of the labor shortage is the expansion of cloud computing. Cloud computing is set up to make life extremely simple for end-users, but the model pushes the complexity to back-end systems which are sophisticated, enterprise-level computing stacks (Oracle has an extensive set of cloud computing solutions). These complex systems require very highly-skilled IT professionals (the best-of-the-best) to successfully develop, implement, administer and maintain them. What this mean for you is that there is opportunity for those who have the appropriate skills at the appropriate levels. If you want to be a part of this opportunity you should do a self-assessment of your own skill-sets and experience. Based upon your results you can decide where it would be most appropriate to spend your time and resources for the highest return on your investment. By expanding and sharpening your skills and by gaining greater experience you will be better prepared to take advantage of career opportunities (like this) that come along periodically.
