• Setting up NFS server on Gentoo

  I'm trying to set up an NFS server on a Gentoo VM. I've installed nfs-utils-1.2.2 and added the following line to the /etc/exports file: /root/svn 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0(rw,sync,no_subtree_check) However, when I try to start the nfs service I get the following errors: gentoo-amd64-francis orig # /etc/init.d/nfs start FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.24-9-pve/modules.dep: No such file or directory * Exporting NFS directories ... [ ok ] * Starting NFS mountd ... [ !! ] * Starting NFS daemon ... [ !! ] * Starting NFS smnotify ... [ ok ] It complains about not finding the /lib/modules/2.6.24-9-pve/modules.dep file, but the /lib/modules directory doesn't even exist on this machine. Can anyone help me getting it to work?

• Allow access to WordPress site only by links in email newsletters

  I send out a personal email newsletter, and have been looking into sending it via some service like MailChimp, or sendy.co. Many of these email services suggest, or require, the email newsletter content to be available online, in case the recipient's email app doesn't render it properly, or at all. The thing is I don't want my newsletter contents visible to the whole world. Nor do I want to require existing recipients to make accounts/be assigned accounts, with passwords. So, the question is: How can my WordPress site content be viewable only by clicking on the link to it in the email newsletter. It can't be found in a Google search; but once at the site the visitor can view previous newsletter contents. It seems an .htaccess file would do the trick, but I have been unable to figure out the syntax for this. Thanks for your help. Similar to this request about allowing access to a certain group while still restricting access to the world: Is there a way to password protect directory only in cpanel. But the user should not be prompted the password, when they try to access it via web? • Can a Windows 2003 Active Directory server act as a NTP server?

  Within our LAN, there are two Windows 2003 servers with the Active Directory role. Both these servers have the time service configured to query NTP servers on the internet for the accurate time. That works fine. I've just installed XenServer v5.6 and it's asked me for the IP address of an NTP server. Without tweaking the firewall, I cannot configure this server to reference an internet based NTP server. But can I configure it to use the IP address of the internal AD servers, i.e. do AD servers also act as NTP servers to other computers? Thanks, Rob.

• GitHub: Are there external tools for managing issues list vs. project backlog

  Recently I posted one of my the projects1 on GitHub and as I was exploring capabilities of the site, I noticed they have a rather decent issue tracking section. I want to use that section as a) other people can report bugs if they'd like and b) other people can see which bugs I'm aware of. However, as others have noted, issues list cannot be prioritized in order to create a project backlog. For now my backlog has been a text file, but I'd like to be able to have it integrated so the same information isn't maintained in different places. Having a fully ordered list, which is something we also practice at work, has been very useful as I can open one file, start with line 1 and fire off 2 or 3 items in one sitting without having to go back to a full issues/stories bucket. GitHub doesn't offer this. What GitHub does offer is a very nice and clean API so issues can easily be exported into anything else. I've searched to see if there are other websites (like Trello) that integrate with GitHub issues, but did not find anything. Does anyone know of such a product, service or offline tool? Those that use GitHub, what is your experience in managing backlog? I kinda hate the idea of manually managing two disconnected lists like some people seem to be doing with Wiki project pages. 1 - are shameless plugs allowed no this site? Searched but didn't find a definite answer. If it's bad practice, STOP and don't read further As a developer I got sick and tired of navigating to same set of folders 30 times a day, so I wrote a little, auto-collapsible utility that gets stuck to the desktop and allows easy access to the folders you constantly use.

• NLB RPC server is unavailable on the specified computer

  Hi guys, Firstly, I'll admit that my networking knowledge is limited so as people request more information I'll update this question accordingly. I am trying to create a NLB Cluster across 2 Windows Server 2008 Web Servers. Neither of the machines are members of a domain, and both have 2 NICs (one for processing external web traffic, and one for communicating internally). I have installed NLB on both machines, and have created a cluster on Host A and added itself to it. However, when I try and add Host B (using the address from the external NIC) I get the following error : "The RPC server is unavailable on the specified computer". On Host B I can see that the RPC service is running fine. I can also ping and RDP from Host A to Host B with no problems either. I have disabled the windows firewall on both machines but that had no effect

  I am looking for a best hosting service for my website. My website is a PHP MySQl driven site which hase got site scrapping for more than 10 websites and near about 8-10 API pursing and some about 150 mb dat file reading(from local hard drive), and also one rss pursing,Live graph from other sites, geo map from Google,Map api from Google and so on. one widget which real-time result for any one who chose the same. so my question is which is best option for me. actually I am considering softlayer cloud as they are pretty cheap and more facilities than rackspace. another option is a dedicated server which has 2 single core processor, 4GB ram and 250GB sata II. with 100 mbps uplink. so please tell me which will be the best option?? I heard that dedicated server has lots of limitations than cloud. but for cloud they uses SAN for storage so I am afraid the reading proces for database may be bit slower...and their basic plan ram is only 1 GB.

• Mac Leopard Server Apache Permission Denied

  I've setup the web server successfully on Mac Leopard Server and sites work fine within the DocumentRoot directory. I have mounted a volume which has restricted access to users within a group. I would like to point the web server to directories within this volume. Can I add the user the web service is using to the group that has access to this Volume, if so: how do I find out what the user is? I can confirm the web server is pointing to the right directory as log files show the full directory path. When you access the site's URL, it shows Access Forbidden.

  My /etc/resolv.conf constantly get a mysterious entry, i run a home network with ipv6 provided by ravd, the interface is auto-configured by Network manager (all name server lookups are lost when this line is first in my /etc/resolv.conf) . Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) **# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN** nameserver fd00::1 nameserver 192.168.1.1 search home.int When ping is working cat /etc/resolv.conf # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN nameserver 192.168.1.1 search home.int So something is putting fd00::1 at start of file, not if I ping6 fd00::1 I get Destination unreachable: Administratively prohibited To diagnose this I ran the router with single cable to connected to ubuntu machine. Ran tcpdump + restarted network on ubuntu. "tcpdump ip6 -e -i eth0 | grep fd00" finds nothing, it's not being advertised via the network.. The only hit I got was when an upstream router refused a connection attempt from the ubuntu machine to fd00::1. • Why does DNS work the way it does?

  This is a Canonical Question about DNS (Domain Name Service). If my understanding of the DNS system is correct, the .com registry holds a table that maps domains (www.example.com) to DNS servers. What is the advantage? Why not map directly to an IP address? If the only record that needs to change when I am configuring a DNS server to point to a different IP address, is located at the DNS server, why isn't the process instant? If the only reason for the delay are DNS caches, is it possible to bypass them, so I can see what is happening in real time?

• Achieving/maxing out 1GBPS connectivity on a nginx server

  This page (http://www.remsys.com/nginx-on-1gbps) claims that it can max out a 1gbps line using JBOD setup and no raid. Currently I'm on a 1gbps dedicated port and I'm on raid 10 (4x2TB - the disks that comes with 100tb.com servers). Currently I'm only peaking at 500-550mbps. wa% would show something around 20% everytime. I'm looking into maxing out this 1gbps port because I have an unmetered service from them. Do you guys think that the page that I referenced would be better than my current raid setup? Do you guys have any other suggestions on how to max out the performance of this server? TYI.

• Restoring using SyncBack without profiles

  I backed up my internal hard drive (C:) using SyncBack onto an external (USB) hard drive with maximum compression. I then performed a clean install of Windows Vista onto the computer. I forgot to copy the SyncBack logs before the clean install. And now when ever I try to restore a directory, the RAR/ZIP files are copied to the system hard drive instead of extracting their contents to the hard drive. Also, SyncBack is not traversing the folders during the Restore process. How can I tell SyncBack to expand the compressed files? I am running the freeware version of SyncBack. I have to create new log files (unless SyncBack put them somewhere on the external drive). My alternative is to write a program that traverses the folders on the external drive and extracts files from the RAR/ZIP files. I am using Windows Vista, Service Pack 2, and the data size prior to backup was about 200 GB. (The backup process took over 72 hours due to "hiccups").

• Issue with Exchange 2010 and Removing a Mailbox Database

  I did a 2003 to 2010 transition and everything is working well. During the 2010 install, a database was copied over with a random number at the end. I found out and moved three system mailboxes out of it into the database that all of the client accounts are in. I used the EMS to move those mailboxes to the other store then used the EMC to remove the mailbox database. Problem is, I am getting an error every few hours in event viewer now complaining about this database. Error is: MSExchageRepl - 4098 The Microsoft Exchange Replication service couldn't find a valid configuration for database '5f012f40-3bad-4003-a373-dbc0ffb6736f' on server 'SERVER'. Error: (nothing reported after this) Does anyone know how to fix this issue? In advance, I appreciate your help and thx for your valuable input!

  I have a single IP with Jetty serving up X sites on port 80. Basically you can sign up for our service, then point your domain www.mycompany.com to that IP, and Jetty will serve up your custom site. I would like to add SSL support for all sites. To simplify things, I've looked at getting a single Unified Communications Certificate to plug into Jetty and have it work for all sites. Is this possible? Has anyone done this before? Does Jetty only support traditional, single-domain certs? What issues might I run in to compared to a single-domain cert?

• Which .NET REST approach/technology/tool should I use?

  I am implementing a RESTful web service and several client applications that are mostly in Silverlight. I am finding a litany of options for developing both the server-side and client-side of the API but am not sure which is the best approach. I'm concerned about stability as well as a platform that will continue to exist a few months from now. We started using the REST Starter Kit with .NET 3.5 but moved to the new WCF Web API when updating to .NET 4.0. All of their documentation indicates that WCF Web API is the replacement for the RSK. However, Web API is only in Preview 4 and does not include support for Silverlight or Windows Phone 7 clients (yet). WCF Web API looks like a wrapper on top of the WCF WebHttp Services stuff provided in the System.ServiceModel.Web library which makes me think that maybe it would be simpler to just go with the built-in stuff but Web API does offer some nice features. I am specifically tied-up trying to determine the best course for the client-side. My main requirement is that I need to support deserializing into my client-side objects quickly and easily. The Web API offers a nice client library but doesn't have a Silverlight version. I'd like to use the latest approach and the toolset that is being actively developed and supported. Is the REST Starter Kit really obsolete? Has anyone had any success implementing the WCF Web API toolkit? Is there merit to using either of these over the built-in WCF WebHttp Services features found in System.ServiceModel.Web? Is there a single solution that works for any client (web, Silverlight, etc.)? What suggestions do you have?

• SharePoint Web Analytics not tracking usage for main application

  My SP 2010 setup is two separate applications - one for the main portal and one for MySite. Whilst WebAnalytics is tracking usage of MySite it's not showing any stats for the main Portal. The only thing it lists is the number of site collections but no page views etc. The WA service is clearly running to pick up data for MySite. In Configure web analytics and health data collection everything is ticked. I can't find any obvious settings that are different between the two applications. Where should I look to get usage tracking correctly?

• VAIO as a Linux based netbook

  I'm planning to refresh my laptop. I've been using a thinkpad T42 for a long time and run Ubuntu on it. I'm planning to move to using a desktop for all my heavy work and getting a very light netbook style machine for mobile use. I need a decent keyboard, good battery life and a display that's bright and responsive. I'm evaluating a couple of laptops including a mac but have never come across information about a Sony Vaio. Do any of the people have experience with the laptop? What are your opinions? Does it work fine with Linux? Is it tinkerable (a big problem with the macbooks). How's the build quality, how's the service?

  Yesterday the Tell Us Once project received it’s latest accolade. My partner in crime in the execution of the delivery of software for this project, Mark Usher,  reports: It’s always great to receive recognition for the effort you put in when working on a project. It’s no secret that here at Solidsoft we are extremely proud of our association with the Government’s Tell Us Once (TUO) programme. Having already been selected by Microsoft as Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) 2011 Award Winners for Application Integration, we are very pleased that the TUO programme as a whole has been recognised and has won the Guardian Newspaper’s Innovation Nation Award for Frontline Services (link to http://www.guardian.co.uk/innovation-nation-awards )  The TUO entry was judged the winner over three other shortlisted solutions from Dyfed Powys Police, North Yorkshire County Council and Staffordshire County Council. Innovation Nation is a partnership between Virgin Media Business and the Guardian, an initiative to uncover the most innovative businesses, public sector organisations and charities in the UK today.  Its aim is to showcase the ideas, the endeavour and the energy that are making things better in the areas of customer service, unique working practices, frontline government services and collaboration. Solidsoft have been involved with the Tell Us Once programme since its inception in 2007 and worked closely with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to produce a business case for the programme. Teaming up with Atos (who host the application) Solidsoft delivered the first national solution in 2011 and a second phase in April 2012. Whilst currently restricted to distributing citizen data to central government organisations and local government authorities, DWP is now actively engaging with the private sector to see if TUO data can be disclosed to private sector organisations such as banks and building societies. Solidsoft welcome this expansion into the private sector where even more efficiencies will be realised. • install PECL JSON in PHP 5.04

  It's OK (compatible) to install PECL native JSON (from here) in PHP 5.0.4, on a production server running FC4 where unfortunately I cannot update PHP to at least 5.2 ? If there is a good chance to screw up PHP instalation on the server, I will not try to install it, and I will stick to Service JSON ( http ://svn.php.net/viewvc/pear/packages/Services_JSON/trunk/ ) In documentation ( http ://aurore.net/projects/php-json/ ) I have found: A simple ./configure; make; make install should do the trick. Make sure to add an extension=json.so line to your php.ini/php.d. (but I can't find anythink about compatible versions of PHP) Thank you. (Please don't tell me to update the OS and PHP, beacause it's not my decision :( )

• "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" windows XP, outlook 2007, connect to exchange using HTTP

  Hey, I can't connect to an exchange server using windows XP and outlook 2007, using the "connect anywhere over HTTP" process, it has been working until recently and the user reports no recent changes to his environment. The error is "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" It will prompt me for the username and password which I can enter, then it will give the errorm however this only happens when I delete the account and enter all details for the excahnge server again. The client computer that is unable to connect using outlook can connect to the HTTPS mail service and login send/receive fine. Nobody else has reported issues. making a test environment with a clean install of XP and outlook 2007 gives the same error, but using windows 7 and outlook 2007 connects perfectly fine everytime. I also removed all passwords using control keymgr.dll which didnt help. Any assistance or ideas would be appreciated, at this point nothing I've tried from technet or google works <_<

• Windows 7 disc not recognized by DVD drive

  My machine is a recent model Systemax, less than 2 years old. It came with Vista 32bit and I bought Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for it. When I insert the Windows 7 DVD into the drive, it churns a little but does not recognize the disc. If I double click the DVD drive icon, it prompts me to insert a disc. I tried a different DVD (Office 2007) and the drive recognized the disc. I tried the Windows 7 disc in my Dell laptop and it recognized the disc. So basically, the disc is good and the drive is good, but they don't like each other. I tried to boot to the Windows 7 DVD and the system did not see it. I turned off the Lightscribe service and that didn't help. Does anybody have an idea what's wrong here? Thanks.
