• What influences running time of reading a bunch of images?

  I have a program where I read a handful of tiny images (50000 images of size 32x32). I read them using OpenCV imread function, in a program like this: std::vector<std::string> imageList; // is initialized with full path to the 50K images for(string s : imageList) { cv::Mat m = cv::imread(s); } Sometimes, it will read the images in a few seconds. Sometimes, it takes a few minutes to do so. I run this program in GDB, with a breakpoint further away than the loop for reading images so it's not because I'm stuck in a breakpoint. The same "erratic" behaviour happens when I run the program out of GDB. The same "erratic" behaviour happens with program compiled with/without optimisation The same "erratic" behaviour happens while I have or not other programs running in background The images are always at the same place in the hard drive of my machine. I run the program on a Linux Suse distrib, compiled with gcc. So I am wondering what could affect the time of reading the images that much?

• .net remoting - Better solution to wait for a service to initialize ?

  Context I have a client application (which i cannot modify, i.e. i only have the binary) that needs to run from time to time external commands that depends on a resource which is very long to initialize (about 20s). I thus decided to initialize this resource once for all in a "CommandServer.exe" application (single instance in the system tray) and let my client application call an intermediate "ExecuteCommand.exe" program that uses .net remoting to perform the operation on the server. The "ExecuteCommand.exe" is in charge for starting the server on first call and then leave it alive to speed up further commands. NB2: I have no background with .net remoting, nor WCF which is recommended replacer. (I chose .net remoting because this looked easier to set-up for this single shot issue in running external commands).

• Windows service (hosting WCF service) stops immediately on start up

  My Question: I cannot navigate to the base address once the service is installed because the service won't remain running (stops immediately). Is there anything I need to do on the server or my machine to make the baseAddress valid? Background: I'm trying to learn how to use WCF services hosted in Windows Services. I have read several tutorials on how to accomplish this and it seems very straight forward. I've looked at this MSDN article and built it step-by-step. I can install the service on my machine and on a server, but when I start the service, it stops immediately. I then found this tutorial, which is essentially the same thing, but it contains some clients that consume the WCF service. I downloaded the source code, compiled, installed, but when I started the service, it stopped immediately. Searching SO, I found a possible solution that said to define the baseAddress when instantiating the ServiceHost, but that didnt help either.   although I'm about to finish my first app, I'm still confused about the very basic memory management..I've read through many posts here and apple document, but I'm still puzzled.. My gut feel tells me I am doing wrong, but it works superficially and I found no memory leak in analyze and instruments.. can anyone give my advice? when I use "self." to set text and set background color, does it retain one automatically? • XNA, C# - Check if a Vector2 path crosses another Vector2 path.

  Hello all, I have an XNA question for those with more experience in these matters than myself (maths). Background: I have a game that implements a boundary class, this simply hosts 2 Vector2 objects, a start and an end point. The current implementation crudely handles collision detection by assuming boundaries are always vertical or horizontal, i.e. if start.x and end.x are the same check I am not trying to pass x etc. Ideally what I would like to implement is a method that accepts two Vector2 parameters. The first being a current location, the second being a requested location (where I would like to move it to assuming no objections). The method would also accept a boundary object. What the method should then do is tell me if I am going to cross the boundry in this move. this could be a bool or ideally something representing how far I can actually move. • Looking for PyQt4 embeddable terminal widget

  I wrote an application that, among other things, launches some "backend" processes to do some stuff. These subprocesses are very likely to fail or have unexpected behavior since they have to operate in quite hard conditions, so I prefer to give full control over them to the operator. NOTE: I am running these processes using a subprocess module based class instead of QProcess to have some more control functionality over the running process. At the moment, I'm using a QPlainTextEdit widget to which I append standard output/error from the subprocess, plus some buttons to quickly send some common signals (INT, STOP, CONT, KILL, ..), but: In some cases it would be useful to send some input too. Although it could be done with a text input box, I would prefer using something more "professional" Of course, there is no direct way to interpret special control characters, such as color codes, cursor movement, etc.. I had to implement an auto-scroll management of the console, but it is not guaranteed 100% to work nicely (sometimes the scroll locking doesn't work as expected, etc.) So: does anyone know something I could use to accomplish these needs? I found qtermwidget but it seems more oriented on handling a shell process (and the Python bindings seems to let you run /bin/bash only) by itself than communicating with an already existing process I/O.

  Background I am currently logging deletion of rows from my tickets table at the application level. When a user deletes a ticket the following SQL is executed: INSERT INTO alert_log (user_id, priority, priorityName, timestamp, message) VALUES (9, 4, 'WARN', NOW(), "TICKET: David A. deleted ticket #6 from Foo"); Please do not offer schema suggestions for the alert_log table. Fields: user_id - User id of the logged in user performing the deletion priority - Always 4 priorityName - Always 'WARN' timestamp - Always NOW() message - Format: "[NAMESPACE]: [FullName] deleted ticket #[TicketId] from [CompanyName]" NAMESPACE - Always TICKET FullName - Full name of user identified by user_id above TicketId - Primary key ID of the ticket being deleted CompanyName - Ticket has a Company via tickets.company_id Situation/Questions Obviously this solution does not work if a ticket is deleted manually from the mysql command line client. However, now I need to. The issues I'm having are as follows: Should I use a PROCEDURE, FUNCTION, or TRIGGER? -- Analysis: TRIGGER - I don't think this will work because I can't pass parameters to it, and it would trigger when my application deleted the row too. PROCEDURE or FUNCTION - Not sure. Should I return the number of deleted rows? If so, that would require a FUNCTION right? How should I account for the absence of a logged in user? -- Possibilities: Using either a PROC or FUNC, require the invoker to pass in a valid user_id Require the user to pass in a string with the name Use the CURRENT_USER - meh Hard code the FullName to just be "Database Administrator" Could the name be an optional parameter? I'm rather green when it comes to sprocs. Assuming I went with the PROC/FUNC approach, is it possible to outright restrict regular DELETE calls to this table, yet still allow users to call this PROC/FUNC to do the deletion for them? Ideally the solution is usable by my application as well, so that my code is DRY.

• How (and if) to write a single-consumer queue using the task parallel library?

  I've heard a bunch of podcasts recently about the TPL in .NET 4.0. Most of them describe background activities like downloading images or doing a computation, using tasks so that the work doesn't interfere with a GUI thread. Most of the code I work on has more of a multiple-producer / single-consumer flavor, where work items from multiple sources must be queued and then processed in order. One example would be logging, where log lines from multiple threads are sequentialized into a single queue for eventual writing to a file or database. All the records from any single source must remain in order, and records from the same moment in time should be "close" to each other in the eventual output. So multiple threads or tasks or whatever are all invoking a queuer: lock( _queue ) // or use a lock-free queue! { _queue.enqueue( some_work ); _queueSemaphore.Release(); } And a dedicated worker thread processes the queue: while( _queueSemaphore.WaitOne() ) { lock( _queue ) { some_work = _queue.dequeue(); } deal_with( some_work ); } It's always seemed reasonable to dedicate a worker thread for the consumer side of these tasks. Should I write future programs using some construct from the TPL instead? Which one? Why?

  I'm a third year irregular CS student and ,i just realized that i have to start coding. I passed my coding classes with lower bound grades so that i haven't a good background in coding&programming. I'm trying to write a code that generates prime numbers between given upper and lower bounds. Not knowing C well, enforce me to write a rough code then go over it to solve. I can easily set up the logic for intended function but i probably create a wrong algorithm through several different ways. • Maintaining Mouse Control in Embedded swfs (i.e. parent / child ) Flash cs4 AS3

  Hello to all, I have an issue that is driving me nuts. I have an AS3 application that performs a calculation based upon user's input to determine a result. The purpose is to predict the results of a horse's coat color based on the genetics. The results are given in a 3d model swfs that are loaded into the "shell's" UILoader Component and they rotate. I have an example of this here: http://www.provideoshow.com/coatcalculator/coat_calculator.html As you can see this works fine with an "auto-rotate" feature. The problem is that my client wants the 3d models to be rotated by the user's mouse. I have the 3d models rotating with the mouse but they only work when they are stand alone swfs. They break when they are loaded into the shell. Some research informs me that the issue is in the stage properties and the parent not receiving them from the child. I've gotten some advice that I need to pass a reference to the shell's stage and preferably in the init function.   Hi guys, i'm trying to do a poll but i designed it without any radio box in it. So i decided to make the selection being highlighted with a different background color, all is done with jquery. I set the display of the radio box to none so that it wouldn't show, gave each a unique ID. • I need to move a dived CSS module into the center of the page...

  I'm building a website for someone and they wanted the text and bulk of the information to be centered on the page. Problem is I can get everything contained in a tag and then assign the class, but I can't get the whole thing to center. It always hangs to the left even if I apply centering to the div class. I guess you could say that it is stuck on the left side of the page when I want everything to be centered. I would just make everything format larger but they want some space left in the background for the color and maybe some imagery later on. They haven't made up their minds. If you want to take a look here is the link where I'm building or testing stuff. I know the header and such needs to be re proportioned to fit with everything, but just as a frame of reference. Don't worry about the header, just know that I want the white text information area with the purple border to stay the same size, but just move to the center and if some one could tell me how to do that I would appreciate it greatly.

• Usability for notification messages, colors

  In each app I develop, I like to add three types of messages: Green/blue for success messages Yellow for warnings Red for errors And perhaps, a neutral one for information, which is gray or blue if the success one is green. The success one is used for when an item is created or updated, the yellow one is when there's something wrong, but not we-are-going-to-die wrong and the red one is when something is blocked or we are going to die. However, there's one thing I can't figure out, when I delete an object, what kind of notification should I use? I think the success one is not because it is not expected, altough the deletion was successful, the user tends not to read the message, just to see the color. The red one might be, but it can be misunderstood (I tried to delete it but there was an error), the warning and the information one might be good choices, but I'm not really sure. Also, when you ask for confirmation about deleting something, the 'cancel' button should be green or red? I'm just curious how you guys handle this. Thanks.

  [I have no idea if stackoverflow really is right right place for this, but don't know how many devs on here run into msi issues with SQL Server; suggest SuperUser or ServerFault if folk think it's better on either of those] About a year ago, when we were looking at moving our codebase forward and migrating to SQL Server 2008, I pulled down a copy of Books Online from the MSDN. Reviewed, did background research, fed results upstream, grabbed Express and tinkered with that. Then we got the nod to move forward (hurrah!) this past couple of weeks. So armed with Developer Edition, and running through the install, I've since found out I've zapped the Books Online MSI, no-ones got a copy of it, and Microsoft only have a later version (Oct 2009) available, so damned if I can update my SQL Server fully and properly... {mutter grumble}. Does anyone know if old versions of Books Online are available for download anywhere? Poking around the Microsoft download centre can't find it, neither is my google-fu finding it. For reference, I'm looking for SQLServer2008_BOL_August2008_ENU.msi ... This may just be a case of good ol' manual delete the files and (try) and clean up the registry :-(

• Having trouble using jQuery's .animate() to animate a div from left to right, right to left?

  Hello, I seem to be having difficulties using jQuery .animate() to animate an absolutely positioned div from right to left on a button click, and left to right on another button click. I was wondering if you would be willing to help me understand what I'm doing wrong? Thanks. Below is my relevant CSS, HTML, and jQuery code. I can click the #moveLeft button and it wil indeed animate it to the left, but when I click the #moveRight button, nothing happens. Where am I going wrong? Thanks!! • Game design flaw, need help investigating

  I am not sure if I will be able to get help here but I would give it a shot. The problem is I dont know where the problem is. I have a cards game, in which when you "human" play by dragging a card, then at the end of card being dragged, a handler using postExecute is called with delay of 0.5 sec to start the next player in turn (which is a bot) The bot chooses the color and plays it and at the end of the animation (the card moving to the middle) a handler is started for the next bot and so on. Once the play reaches again to the human player, it waits for his touchs to drag the crad and start the cycle again. The problem that in production, sometimes I am getting errors. The error is resulting in somehow messing up the sequence which ends up with players having more cards than others. After investigation, I found that the transition from human to bot is the problem. Somehow, the transition is happening twice (meaning handler calling post execute twice and the bot is playing twice and everything is messed up). Its been mutliple months and I can't reproduce it (to fix it) and I cna't figure out why this is happeneing? ANY IDEA how I can go after it? How can I get more info about or how can I solve something like that? any pointer would help me

  I was playing around with Ruby and Latex to create a color coding set. I'm more than a novice with C++, but haven't looked at Ruby until now. So, still learning a lot of coding. I have the following block of code below. When attempting to run this, band1 = 1e+02. I've tried band1 = (BigDecimal(i) * 100).to_f thinking maybe there was some odd floating point issue. This is just me trying anything though as an integer multiplied by an integer should create an integer, if I'm still thinking correctly. I've tried a variety of other things as well (things that I can do in C++, but this ain't C++), but to no avail. (1..9).each do |i| #Band 1 (0..9).each do |j| #Band 2 (0..11).each do |k| #Band 3 #Band 3 Start #these are the colors of the resistor bands b1 = $c_band12[i] b2 = $c_band12[j] b3 = $c_band3[k] b4 = "Gold" oms = ((i*100) + (j*10)) * $mult[k] band1 = i*100 band2 = j band3 = $mult[k] end end end Not sure what I'm missing. Should I be using .each_with_index through these iterations? It seems that a is clearly defined in the line String[] a = assignTeams () ; and if anything is used by the lineprintOrder (a) ;` it seems to me that if the symbol a really couldn't be found then the compiler should blow up there and not at the return statment. (also the method assignTeams returns an array of Strings.)
