  • How to make the game wait for an animation to finish?

    I'm teaching myself andengine while trying to make a match-3 puzzle, so far I have a grid of gems that I populate and can move then around. Matching gems and new gems falling is working already. My problem is that the game keeps flowing while animations runs. How can I make the flow suspend until movement is done? I use entity modifiers for the gems animations. MoveYModifier for the fall and PathModifier for the swap.

Basically, what I'd do would be a class that manages displaying and updating positions of all the enemies. But how to create good deplacements for enemies? A list of where-to-go points? gravitating around some fixed points (with ponderation, distance evaluation etc.)? Same question for the shoot patterns? Can you please put me on a track?

  • How to have the game world get rendered on just a part of the screen?

    I am implementing a game on both Desktop and Android. The Desktop version will just rely on the keyboard to handle the user input on the game screen, whilst the Android one will have to have a set of buttons placed in a bar at the bottom of the game screen, using a Stage. Consequently, I am expecting the game world to take up the entire space available on the Desktop screen, whilst on Android it should expand to the entire width of the screen, and to the screen height minus the height of the buttons bar I've mentioned. What would be an appropriate approach of handling space sharing between the game world and the buttons bar? Thank you.

I'd like to find which side of the block is collided with, so I can only make the ball bounce when it hits the top. I tried to implement many things like fixture data and by detecting position, using manifold but not get the accurate result. I also tried to calculate distance between two object but all went wrong.

    Alright, so I got this walking code, and some collision detection, now the collision detection returns a Vector3f of the closest point on the triangle that the projected position is at (pos + move), so then I project my position again in the walking method/function and if the projected position's x is the nearest point'x the projected position's x becomes the nearist point's x. same with their z points, but if I'm moving in a different direction from 0 degrees XZ how would I rotate the equation/condition? Here is what I got so far, and it's not working, as I go through walls, and such.     How to get the current time in milliseconds? I'm working on a hacking simulation game and when ever someone connects to another computer/NPC, a login screen popups with a button on the side called BruteForce. When BruteForce is clicked, what i want the program to do is, calculate how many seconds cracking the password is going to take based on the player's CPU speed but that's the easy part. The hard part is i want to enter a character in the password's box every X milliseconds based on a TimeToCrack divided by PasswordLength formula. But since i don't know how to find how many milliseconds have elapsed since the second has passed, the program waits until the CurrentTime is higher than the TimeBeforeTheLoopStarted + HowLongItTakesToTypeaCharacter which is always going to be a second. How would you handle my problems?   • Physics for moving blocks

    I'm working on a 2D game for windows phone where the player moves blocks around to bounce a laser beams. I need to create some simple physics for moving the blocks. For the moment I have a simple collision class, telling me if two rectangles collide. But that's not enough because when I'm moving a block the rectangle/rectangle function doesn't work. By Doesn't work i mean,I manage the collision but I don't how to stop the block mooving while the user sliding the block. The collision response for the block I want is if the user tries to slide it on another object, the block should slide up against the other object and not overlap. How would I go about implementing this functionality?

    I am currently using DirectX 9 on a machine with two GPUs and three monitors. I am currently trying to draw a triangle on each monitor using vertexbuffers; A directx helloworld with multiple monitors if you will. I am familiar with some DirectX coding, but new to multiple monitor DirectX coding. I may be going about this the wrong way, so please do correct me if I'm doing something wrong. I have created a Direct3D Device for each enumerated adapter sharing the same Form handle. This allows me to successfully use all three monitors in full-screen mode.   • Object array updates one instance repeatedly [on hold]

    I'm making a 2D shooter, and the player object holds an array of bullets that represent how many shots the player can have on screen at once. At least, this is what I'm trying for. What's happening is that each time any of the objects in the array is called, it seems to update a single object in memory. So, if I fire and then fire again, the object "starts over" from where I shot from and moves twice as fast. I've spent weeks trying to fix this and I've managed nothing. Hopefully another pair of eyes will see something I've missed.   • Is it a good plan to use 2D physics for a 3D racing game?

    I am working on a 3D racing game using SDL and OpenGL. I thought it would be easier to use a 2D physics engine, since I really don't need the 3rd dimension. There will be no flying cars or jumps, they will just be stuck to the floor, so I would use 2D colliders and that things to simulate collisions in a plane but render the actual game from a 3D perspective. So the real question is: is it possible, is it a dumb idea, what else can I do?

    Structuring the components of an engine that I am developing along with a friend (learning purposes), I came to this doubt. Initially we had a Point constructor, like the following: var Point = function( x, y ) { this.x = x; this.y = y; }; But them we started to add some Vector math to it, and them decided to rename it to Vector2d. But now, some methods are a bit confusing (at least in my opinion), such as the following, which is used to make a line: //before the renaming of Point to Vector2, the parameters were startingPoint and endingPoint Geometry.Line = function( startingVector, endingVector ) { //... }; I should make a specific constructor for the Point object, or there are no problems in defining a point as a vector? I know a vector have magnitude and direction, but I see so many people using a vector to just represent the position of an object.

    Until now I have been using C# with XNA for 2d and a little bit of 3d games, althought I dont remember that I finished any of them I want to start working with C++. I have a very very little exprience with C++ and my question is where to start? I plated a little bit with SFML and I encountered some problems with performance when I started to build a tile based game. I'm pretty sure that the problem is my code and not the library itself.   • Dynamic object creation with HashMap

    I want to use a HashMap to dynamically create objects based on the key. I have a Random Map Generator that stores the maps in 3D Arrays of Type Integer[][][]. Upon creation of the actual map I iterate through this array and based on the Integer I want to create the right block. Example: Integer[][][] map ... map[6][6][6] = 3; 3 is a Earth-Block and now I want to initialize a new Block of this type and give it the right coordinates. Currently I store my Bindings from Integer to Class in a HashMap(Integer, String) and create my objects like that: int id = array[x][y][z]; String block_name = Blocks.map.get(id); Block block = (Block) Class.forName(block_name).newInstance(); block.setPosition(x,y,z); But I want to avoid newInstance() if possible. I've never worked that dynamically with Java before and I couldn't find a solution like changing the HashMap to (Integer, Class) or something. I just need to create a new Object based upon the Integer. Any ideas/solutions? Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day!

  • 2d engine with WebGL

    I am currently developing a HTML5 canvas game with a sprite-based 2d engine. The engine is working well so far, but now I thought that I could maybe add some cool graphic effects when I would re-implement the whole engine with WebGL. The whole graphic engine would stay strictly two-dimensional (think of it as a 3d world where the z coordinate of all vertices is 0.0). What I hope to gain from this is the ability to use pixel shaders to create special effects. I also think that the performance could improve. What do you think about that plan?

  • how to make game objects to contain other objects?

    Im pretty undecided about what path to take here. The simplest that comes to mind is just adding a field List to the GameObject class where i would store the things contained in it. But would it be elegant and well tought? And would it be good performance wise?(ofc 99.9% of my objects wouldnt have anything stored in them...) What about deriving a ContainerObject from GameObject? This way only they would have additional fields but then i would have to change many things, my collections of objects would have to become a generic and id have to cast very often into GameObject...

  • Efficiency of iterators and alternatives? [migrated]

    I have the following code for my game tiles: std::vector<GameObject_Tile*>::iterator it; for(int y = 0; y < GAME_TILES_Y; y++) { for(int x = 0; x < GAME_TILES_X; x++) { for (it = gameTiles[x][y].tiles.begin() ; it != gameTiles[x][y].tiles.end(); ++it) {}}} tiles is: struct Game_Tile { // More specific object types will be added here eventually vector<GameObject_Tile*> tiles; }; My problem is that if I change the vector to just be a single GameObject_Tile* instead and remove the iterator line in the loop I go from about 200fps to 450fps. Some context: The vector/pointer only contains one object in both scenarios. I will eventually need to store multiple, but for testing I just set it to a single pointer. The loop goes through 2,300 objects each frame and draws them. I would like to point out that if I remove the Draw (not seen int he example) method, I gain about 30 frames in both scenarios, the issue is the iteration. So I am wondering why having this as a vector being looped through by an iterator (to get at a single object) is costing me over 200 frames when compared to it being a single pointer? The 200+ frames faster code is: std::vector<GameObject_Tile*>::iterator it; for(int y = 0; y < GAME_TILES_Y; y++) { for(int x = 0; x < GAME_TILES_X; x++) { //gameTiles[x][y].tiles is used as a pointer here instead of using *it }} tiles is: struct Game_Tile { // More specific object types will be added here eventually GameObject_Tile* tiles; };

  • Orienting ship movement in asteroids [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Move sprite in the direction it is facing? I'm programming asteroids game. I'm trying to give velocity in the direction of ship face. I've tried using velocity.x = velocity.x * cos r, velocity.y = velocity.y * sin r where velocity is a vector and r is the angle rotated. but it's not moving in right direction. Could someone help with this problem? It is supposed to return the vector in which ship is facing. I don't understand the problem.

  • Free texture sites – is it safe to use their content

    There are multiple free texture sites, like: texturemate.com or plaintextures.com. I am wondering how safe it is to use their content? I imagine that the texture could be withdrawed from the site, making it difficult to prove it was really there. Or: a file can origin from other, restricted source. I am thinking about using wikipedia Commons, as there is the OTRS system. However most media requires attributing.

  • Should I be worrying about limiting the number of textures in my game?

    I am working on a GUI in XNA 4.0 at the moment. (Before you point out that there are many GUIs already in existance, this is as much a learning exercise as a practical project). As you may know, controls and dialogs in Windows actually consist of a number of system-level windows. For instance, a dialog box may consist of a window for the whole dialog, a child window for the client area, another window (barely showing) for the frame, and so on. This makes detecting mouse hits and doing clipping relatively easy. I'd like to design my XNA GUI along the same lines, but using overlapping Textures instead of windows obviously. My question (yes, there's actually a question in this drivel) is: am I at risk of adversely affecting game performance and/or running low in resources if I get too nuts with the creating of many small textures? I haven't been able to find much information on how resource-tight the XNA environment actually is. I grew up in the days of 64K ram so I'm used to obsessing about resources and optimization. Anyway, any feedback appreciated.
