• Upgrading Fedora 16 to 17 with crypted LVM

  As the title suggests, I want to upgrade Fedora 16 to the Fedora 17 Alpha build, but I am struggling to do so because of my crypted HDD. To avoid the hustle of CD-ROM or USB install, I thought the preupgrade would be a good idea. It downloads the stuff, stores an image somewhere and creates an entry in my boot manager. When I choose to upgrade from the boot manager it crashes halfway through because it can not access any of the prepared files (because it's crypted) and hands me a debug console. Unfortunately, this case apparently is not covered by the Fedora troubleshooting advice, at least I was not able to find anything there. I would guess I have to mount my HDD manually, but 1) how? and 2) how do I resume the upgrade afterwards? I would really appreciate a push in the right direction.

• Instruct Ubuntu to boot TORAM from flash drive using unetbootin

  I have used UNetbootin to create an installable / live bootable flash drive from Ubuntu 12.04. However that didn't preserve the normal Ubuntu boot menu which allows to me to enter advanced options. It has a custom menu that I can pick from predefined choices like "Install Ubuntu" and "Try Ubuntu without installing". What I would like is to be able to boot from the USB flash drive, but then be able to remove it from the computer once the desktop has loaded. The laptop I would like to use this on does not have a CD/DVD drive. What do I need to modify on the flash drive to add an option to "Try Ubuntu (RAM)" that passes the TORAM=yes parameter to the initrd options? Are their other things I need to touch/change as well? Bonus: I would guess the answer would also allow for other options like acpi=off as well, but if it is different I would appreciate having that answer too.

  i installed Linux Ubuntu after my win os went totally dead by fatal blue screen. cannot reboot or install form CD ROM or get safe mode i installed Linux Ubuntu i still unable to install my wireless stick usb modem to connect and surf the Internet wireless form my provider. i use wireless network from neighborhood And i find it difficult to download and install and save porg and application from the INTERNET like skype and real player and others. it is different form windows and not that easy to use. i click to download for example and find real player but when click on it it opens as text file only and i cannot use it as it should be used for video and download and record from you tube. how to do it. and is there with Linux Ubuntu similar prog to download and record and save from you tube as in windows? Is there any trick to restart or reboot windows OS from the dead. can i use linux to reboot windows or to import my files from the blue screen stopped windows7? I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 alongwith Windows (keeping both XP and 7) in drive G with out losing any data stored in the computer. I have a hard disk of 500 GB size with C (14.8 GB left),D,E,F, and G (15.7 GB left). I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 from DVD and getting stuck at the time of selecting partitions .! How to select the device for boot loader installation? Will the installation of Ubuntu into G drive affects the data stored in the hard disk or in G drive especially? After installing Ubuntu can I use Windows XP and Windows 7? This is my first attempt to use Ubuntu. Can any body help me please?

• Unable to install 12.10 on asus r500v

  I have been unable to get beyond the grub boot screen of the live dvd/usb. The Try Ubuntu without installing, Install Ubuntu, etc menu shows, and I have tried adding/replacing nomodeset and no splash with neither helping. Even "Check disc for defects" does not display anything when selected. I am at a complete loss as to how to fix this one. I have had many successful installs in the past, but this is definitely a first for me. Just as FYI, Gfx card: Geforce GT 635M I realize this particular card has Optimus on it, however even the alternative boot/command line install fails to load. Any help would be appreciated. I realize there have been multiple threads on this, but none of the methods within them have solved this yet. Thanks

• Can I hook my xbox up to my Ubuntu PC

  My old xbox 360 won't eject disks, it makes a sound,but won't open. I want to play games, so I think I could hook it up to my PC running Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit and maybe I could use my PC's DVD drive. Can this work at all, or am I just crazy? There is an HDMI port on the back of my graphics card. If I can't do that, is there any software for Ubuntu that can rip the game off of a CD and put it on a flash drive? I have heard xbmcbuntu works great for gaming, but it doesn't work with my PC.

• Ubuntu runs really slow on netbook

  so I installed Ubuntu through Wubi in my netbook (Compaq Mini, 1.6 GHZ Atom, 1 GB RAM, 250 HDD, Windows 7 Starter) and decided to keep the original OS and run both... The thing is that, after I installed Ubuntu (really hyped: a couple of friends told me this OS was amazing, much faster and eaiser to use than Windows) and selecting it from the boot menu, I find that it runs really slow, sometimes freezing for a sec... For what I know, there must me be a partition in C:/ and a lot of HDD space for the Installation Size to make things faster, but I am sure I got those things right... Any help?? Also, why doesn't Wubi ask you for the DVD or bootable USB drive?? I'm just new in all this guys...

• Extension GLX missing...on a desktop PC

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a new PC with an Nvidia GTX 560 graphics card, but after installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers (either -current or -current-updates), Unity won't start. When trying to start it manually I get the message "extension GLX missing". I've searched around and found results like this question which point out it's a problem with Nvidia Optimus laptops. • Can't run .net software on Samsung Omnia Pro B7330

  I've got a Samsung Omnia Pro B7330, and am unable to run any program for .net compact framework on it. My last three Smartphones had been HTC brand, and all the programs I tried are just simple winform apps, which ran on all HTC phones. But not on the Omnia. • How to upgrade OS on Mac Mini with external USB Drive?

  We have a G4 Mac Mini, circa 2005, running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and we want to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. We have a Leopard install disk, but the optical drive in this mini is broken. So we transferred the install disk image to a USB HDD, but now we can't figure out how to boot off it. From what I've read in Mac forums, some PPC Macs, including some G4's, have been able to boot from USB, even though it sounds like this wasn't officially supported, and it may well depend on the specific model of USB drive and Mac. My Mac says CPU is "PowerPC G4 (1.2)" and Boot ROM is "4.8.9f4". I was hoping I might just find somebody here who had that same Mac Mini and find out if they could make it work. I'd especially like to know any specifics about the USB drive they found success with. Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

  Is it possible to install Ubuntu on a machine with only a dial-up connection? That is, does the Ubuntu install CD come with everything needed to set up an Internet connection using a dial-up modem (I have a USRobotics Courier V.Everything connected to a RS232 port on a Lava Quattro-PCI). I presently run CentOS (5.9), which does include support for dialup Internet access out-of-the-box (all of the modules for dialup are on the distro DVD). When I ran the UBuntu CD (12.04.1 desktop), there was no sign of dial-up Internet support. Am I faced with a chicken or egg problem?

• How do you monitor the health of a mirrored disk in Windows?

  Hi there. I know this is hard question, and possibly not to be answered here, but if there is some article, or more you know about, please post a link. About books, its sad but many great computer books cannot be bought in my country. So, you can find many articles online, which says how memory was mapped back in pre x386 CPU. How there was explicit holes ready for MMIO BIOS, Video BIOS, etc. How there was A20 line for allowing higher memory access etc. Problem is, time changed. Today BIOSes are many times larger, and pure x86 16bit mode is used for booting and ROM flashing only. OS ignore BIOS as they access everything using drivers. And I just want to know, how it works today. I know not so specific question, but I read OS dev wiki, many articles, but all refering to days before massive usage of pure 32bit CPUs.

• How can I run Ghost from a bootable USB key drive?

  I have a laptop that does not have a cd-rom or floppy drive. It is able to boot from USB though. I have a disk image (ghost) of the disk that I need to restore back onto the laptop. I can't find a way to actually run the Ghost utility from a USB key though. I believe the ghost.exe should run from within DOS just fine but I can't seem to create a bootable USB key with DOS on it that allows me to run an EXE. Edit: I managed to find a Ghost utility that I could load from a bootable USB drive. Unfortunately, when I plug in my NTFS external drive (USB), it is not detected.

• Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. UPDATE: I might try my hand at a bit from this answer next: "Installing Catalyst Manually (from AMD/ATI's site)" . From a terminal, fgl_glxgears returns *"fgl_glxgears: command not found"*. Any thoughts?

  So recently I downloaded the most recent ubuntu iso for installation alongside my Windows 8.1. Everything went really smoothly with no errors or hiccups during installation. The only thing is I've decided that I just wanna go back to using Windows 8.1. I haven't a clue how to uninstall ubuntu now. I was going to use the windows installer but there wasn't one available, however fund this latest iso which provided a much improved installer which as I said made things go a lot better. Has anyone any idea how to uninstall it as I tried the DVD I burnt the iso to and all it gives me the option of is reinstalling ubuntu, there is no option to uninstall once I've installed. Any ideas anyone?
