• How to start a high school Java/Android development club for 13-17 year olds

  My wife is a high school maths teacher, and is considering starting a programming club for 13-17 years olds who show an interest. Their interest seems to be around Apps and Android which I have little experience of. The kids would be (presumably) interested in programming, and have a fairly high level of computing knowledge. We would provide them with resources and some knowledge, but hopefully a lot would be self guided. I'm hoping stack overflow'ers can provide some tips or starting points. Specific things I think I'll need are; A development Environment; Currently I'm looking towards Java and Android, developed in Eclipse, probably installed on donated older hardware Some initial direction; There seem to be a plethora or 'start android' tutorials, so some recommendations for good ones are valuable, as are recommended paper books A Target; Some final project they should be shooting for A Route; This is where I'm most stuck, how to lead them through the required Java concepts and learning they would need Some related questions already out there Language+IDE for teaching high school students? Teaching "web design/development" to high-school home-school group. Good sources? How can I bootstrap a software development community at my school?

• Unable to start VMWare Workstation after upgrade to 13.04

  After upgrading to 13.04 I am unable to start VMWorkstation. I get the following message: Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. Kernel Headers 3.8.0-19-generic Kernel headers for version 3.8.0-19-generic were not found. If you have installed them in a non-default path you can specify the path below. Does anyone have any idea what to do next? Ubuntu 13.04 64bit If I direct the path to: /usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.0-19-generic I get the following message: C header files matching your running kernel were not found. Thanks Additional: As suggested I run this in terminal: cd /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build/include/linux sudo ln -s ../generated/utsrelease.h sudo ln -s ../generated/autoconf.h sudo ln -s ../generated/uapi/linux/version.h However, now I get the following: Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the kernel CANCEL / INSTALL I INSTALL, the window closes and nothing happens.... Any ideas? ADDITIONAL: I installed this: sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-dev open-vm-dkms open-vm-toolbox open-vm-tools-dev And it all launched... • Suggestions to start a cross-platform project

  I have a big project in my head, it should be cross-platform (Win, Max and Linux), online (Client - Server) and with 3D graphics. I would like some suggestions to start with the right things. Currently I'm a PHP/MySQL coder, I used to code in C and Pascal on DOS ages (Borland Times ;)), my C knowlegde need a refresh but it's ok. I guess C++ it's the right language. What platform and what i should use to code? I can choose from all three platforms. My idea was to use Visual Studio 2010 C++, but i'm not sure if it support Native code. What kind of libraries should i use? I guessed OpenSSL for the login, OpenGL for graphics part. For the Audio or the GUI? Any other suggestions are well accepted. I know it's a "BIG DEAL" but I have no rush and it'll be a free-time project, only for my pleasure. Thank you in advance.

• where to start and lack of motivation

  I have a few questions that have been bothering me for quite a while, maybe you guys can give me some tips. So let me give a very brief explanation about what I am doing at the moment (like someone cares lol). At the moment I am a last year student on computer science. And like most of you already know is that you won't learn deep programming there, you need to learn it yourself. So at the moment I know like the basics of c++, java, html, php. But it's all bits of this and bits of that. I seriously want to dive deeper in the programming world but there are so many programming languages on the web and there is so much information that i don't know where to start any more.. And that's not the biggest issue, I also lost a bit of my motivation for programming and I like to get more motivation for it so that I love what I do (I am also a very lazy person btw, that's also a problem playing here). So can you guys give me some tips for helping me, because I really want to get pumped up and make cool stuff. (sry for my bad english XD)

• Cocos2d v2.0 and OpenGL 2.0/1.0: where to start

  I started developing my very first game 3 months ago using Cocos2d 2.0 for iPhone. I am now in the stage where I'd like to add some cool effects to the bullets and some special weapons (see my waveforms question here). I got a good answer in the cocos2d-iphone forum (see this one). Unfortunately I am a bit paralized now. I don't know if I will be overdoing by learning OpengGL 2.0 or if I should just stick ot the old 1.0. There is a good intro on various tutorial's written in Steffen Itterheims blog (see this post). I would like to add to my game: a blur effect to the bullets (here is a tutorial for OpenGL 1.0) a waveform (see above) some realistic water ripples (here is a nice sample code) So now, given that I don't want to overdo things but at the same time I want to achieve those effects, from where should I start? Should I discard the OpenGL 1.0 tutorials? OR should I use only OpenGL 1.0 code? How can I avoid confusion? I mean, it seems that the compiler recognizes both, but that there are some conflictual calls in some circumnstances, I am fairly sure this has some explanation, is there some reference to this somewhere?

• Start building websites using Java

  I'm a web developer and I've used PHP, along with MySQL, Javascript, jQuery etc; all of which I'm very confident with and can use on a professional level. What I'm wanting to do however, is to start using Java instead of PHP as I'm creating sites that need to be scalable. I really need a starting point. I can program in Java, I understand the language but have never used it for the web. Links, tutorials, examples would be a great help. I have also considered using Scala (the language Twitter is written in).. but don't really understand the benefits. Please no jargon; I need clear information that essentially takes me through the process of creating a very simple website using Java; I'm more than capable of building the site once that's done.. I think. I've previously used Eclipse so if assume I can. Thanks in advance!

• How to start a Software Company

  I've always been interested in wondering how software companies happen. I find it extremely difficult once you're tied down with car, house, life etc. Funding is always the biggest concern. To make this a bit more specific, I see two types. Those offering a product/service or those offering a consultancy company. One things that bugs me about the product/service kind is that we all know how burning the candle at both ends is extremely exhausting. Coding for 8-10 hours in the day and then code in the evenings on your own stuff, doesn't last long. No matter how passionate you are about your idea, simply put, coding day and night is a recipe for burn out. Is this a defeatist attitude though? Can it be balanced? A consultancy kind isn't as tricky in my honest opinion. I think once you have spent years and years in the industry building up relationships, contacts from contracting or moving around, and of course, being involved in the community, then landing your first project as a consultant I'm sure is easier than the product/service kind. I'd imagine friends then could join you as you take on bigger company projects, like an Agile implementation or TDD training, then off you go gaining bigger things. Could you please specify which company type you're answering if you can't contribute to both. I'd like to hear everyone's experiences or ideas on any level for software company start-ups.

• How to start Sharepoint Development - Resources wanted [closed]

  I'm a apprentice for software development here in good ol' Germany and I've been doing fairly well with c#, asp.net mvc, entity framework and LINQ so far. My superiors want me to focus solely on our intranet development and Sharepoint development. They don't provide me with any resources to start. No books, no co-workers with actual webpart-dev-experience, seminars and the likes. There for it's do it on your own or die. I bought a book and started working through it on my virtual machine messing with the infrastructure and everything i can get a grip on. My main problem however stays the actual development. I have managed to write 2 webparts which can be used as a rudimentary ticket system(using WSP Builder and SP2007). But there it stops. Are there any comprehensive step by step tutorials or blogs out there, like the asp.net tutorials on www.asp.net which take you by the hand go over each step with you? Starting with the basic classes, going over custom css implementation, Jquery/Javascript ajax and async calls? No matter how trivial, I appreciate every help and hint you can give.

• Problem with understanding how to start

  Okay, this might be a little off-topic but i try anyway. Sorry to bother. So i'm working as sysadmin for at least 5 years now and i quite enjoy IT field in general. Somehow i was never interested in programming much but always want to learn something at least easy and for personal usage. As sysadmin i need scripting skills so learn shell scripting without much problems, i also try to learn pascal, delphi, basic over time and must recent was python. Well, my problem is when i try to learn programming i just can't apply what i learn from the books to the real word. What i mean is i understand there are data structures, algorithms, variables, lib's, if-then logic, etc. but i just can't understand how to apply this things when i want to do real things. Like i want to get a something simple as parse web page, i draw a quick algorithm like get a web page, find a word on it and write a to file, on the paper everything look simple but when i get to the coding i just stuck pretty much from the start. I try read code of the real programs that just totally confusing especially big parts with many classes so i'm just quickly lost a trail what this code do. I think i just lack some fundamentals to see a big picture but don't really know what this might be? Or maybe i just don't have a passion to programming at all... My best bet was a shell scripting so i have really no problems to write complex scripts but this just not enough. Recently i was read around 5 or 6 python books because everyone say it's so easy even kid can code something but still no much luck, python is good and easy but i can't make something harder then a prodecurial style code like in bash for easy things but when i want harder things i'm still stuck. In college i was also not a math and tech guy and like to study non-tech stuff mostly like economy, psychology maybe that my problem? Anyway any advice would be greatly appriciated.

• Cloud Computing: Start with the problem

  At one point in my life I would build my own computing system for home use. I wanted a particular video card, a certain set of drives, and a lot of memory. Not only could I not find those things in a vendor’s pre-built computer, but those were more expensive – by a lot. As time moved on and the computing industry matured, I actually find that I can buy a vendor’s system as cheaply – and in some cases far more cheaply – than I can build it myself.   This paradigm holds true for almost any product, even clothing and furniture. And it’s also held true for software… Mostly. If you need an office productivity package, you simply buy one or use open-sourced software for that. There’s really no need to write your own Word Processor – it’s kind of been done a thousand times over. Even if you need a full system for customer relationship management or other needs, you simply buy one. But there is no “cloud solution in a box”.  Sure, if you’re after “Software as a Service” – type solutions, like being able to process video (Windows Azure Media Services) or running a Pig or Hive job in Hadoop (Hadoop on Windows Azure) you can simply use one of those, or if you just want to deploy a Virtual Machine (Windows Azure Virtual Machines) you can get that, but if you’re looking for a solution to a problem your organization has, you may need to mix Software, Infrastructure, and perhaps even Platforms (such as Windows Azure Computing) to solve the issue. It’s all about starting from the problem-end first. We’ve become so accustomed to looking for a box of software that will solve the problem, that we often start with the solution and try to fit it to the problem, rather than the other way around.  When I talk with my fellow architects at other companies, one of the hardest things to get them to do is to ignore the technology for a moment and describe what the issues are. It’s interesting to monitor the conversation and watch how many times we deviate from the problem into the solution. So, in your work today, try a little experiment: watch how many times you go after a problem by starting with the solution. Tomorrow, make a conscious effort to reverse that. You might be surprised at the results.

• Wireless networks are not detected at start up in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have recently (three four days ago) installed Ubuntu 12.04 via windows installer i.e. wubi.exe. After the installation completed wireless and Ethernet were both working well. But after restart wireless networks didn't show up while in the network manager both networking and wireless were enabled. Though sometimes after boot it did show the networks available but very rarely. So I went through various posts regarding wireless issues in Ubuntu 12.04 and tried so many things but ended up in nothing satisfactory. I have Broadcom 4313 LAN network controller and brcmsmac driver. Then relying on some suggestions I tried to install bcm-wl driver but couldn't install due to some error in jockeyl.log file. Then i tried fresh installation of the same driver but still could resolve the startup issues with wireless. Then again I reinstalled Ubuntu inside windows using wubi installer. This time again same problem occurred after boot. But this time I successfully installed wl driver before disturbing file-system files of Ubuntu. But again the same issue. This time I noticed some new things: If I inserted Ethernet/LAN cable before startup then wireless networks are available and of course LAN(wired) networks also work. but if i don't plug in cable before startup and then plug it after startup then it didn't detect Ethernet network neither wireless. So I haven't noticed it before that LAN along with wifi also doesn't work after startup. But if i suspend the session and make it sleep and again login then it worked. I tried it every time that WLAN worked perfectly. But still i m unable to resolve that startup problem. Each time i boot first I have to suspend it once then only networks are available. It irritates me each time i reboot/boot my lappy. So please help out of this problem. Any ideas/help regarding this issue would be highly appreciated.   I asked this question in SuperUser one hour ago, then I know this community so I moved the question here... I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 in a physical x86-64 machine. Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too. But after the restart, the computer can't start up. There are errors in the console. • Cheese won't start

  I can't start Cheese Webcam Booth. It starts loading and there is a brief moment when the window shows up but then it disappears, like it shuts itself down and it's not in system monitor. My webcam works perfectly in Skype video call. I installed and run Camorama and it gave me an error: Could not connect to video device (/dev/video0) Please check connection When I run the lsusb I get this line for my webcam: Bus 002 Device 002: ID 04f2:b210 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd And for my graphic card, running lspci: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) It's not a pressing matter, but it bugs my nerves, if it works on Skype, why does Cheese and other programs refuse to run. As I said, it's not a big deal but any help would be appreciated. • Launching a PHP daemon from an LSB init script w/ start-stop-daemon

  I'm writing an lsb init script (admittedly something I've never done from scratch) that launches a php script that daemonizes itself. The php script starts off like so: #!/usr/bin/env php <?php /* do some stuff */ It's then started like so in the init script: # first line is args to start-stop-daemon, second line is args to php-script start-stop-daemon --start --exec /path/to/executable/php-script.php \ -- --daemon --pid-file=$PIDFILE --other-php-script-args The --daemon flag causes the php script to detach & run as a daemon itself, rather than relying on start-stop-daemon to detach it. This is how it's (trying to) stop it in the init script: start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --exec /path/to/executable/php-script.php \ --pidfile $PIDFILE The problem is, when I try to stop via the init script, it gives me this: $ sudo /etc/init.d/my-lsb-init-script stop * Stopping My Project No /path/to/executable/php-script.php found running; none killed. ...done. A quick peek at ps tells me that, even though the php script itself is executable, its running as php <script> rather than the script name itself, which is keeping start-stop-daemon from seeing it. I currently have a project that Uses NHibernate on SQLite Implements Repository and Unit of Work pattern: http://blogs.hibernatingrhinos.com/nhibernate/archive/2008/04/10/nhibernate-and-the-unit-of-work-pattern.aspx MVVM strategy in a WPF app Unit of Work implementation in my case supports one NHibernate session at a time. I thought at the time that this makes sense; it hides inner workings of NHibernate session from ViewModel. Now, according to Oren Eini (Ayende): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee819139.aspx He convinces the audience that NHibernate sessions should be created / disposed when the view associated with the presenter / viewmodel is disposed. He presents issues why you don't want one session per windows app, nor do you want a session to be created / disposed per transaction. This unfortunately poses a problem because my UI can easily have 10+ view/viewmodels present in an app. He is presenting using a MVP strategy, but does his advice translate to MVVM? Does this mean that I should scrap the unit of work and have viewmodel create NHibernate sessions directly? Should a WPF app only have one working session at a time? If that is true, when should I create / dispose a NHibernate session? And I still haven't considered how NHibernate Stateless sessions fit into all this! My brain is going to explode. Please help!

• PHP session_write_close() causes empty response

  When using session_write_close() in a shutdown function at the end of my script - PHP just dies. There is no error logged, response headers (firebug), or data (even whitespace!) returned. I have full PHP error reporting on with STRICT enabled and PHP 5.2.1. My guess is that since session_write_close() is being called after shutdown - some fatal error is being encountered that crashes PHP before it has a chance to send the output or log anything. This only happens on the logout page where I first: ... //If there is no session to delete (not started) if ( ! session_id()) { return; } // Get the session name $name = session_name(); // Delete the session cookie (if exists) if ( ! empty($_COOKIE[$name])) { //Get the current cookie config $params = session_get_cookie_params(); // Delete the cookie from globals unset($_COOKIE[$name], $_SESSION); //Delete the cookie on the user_agent setcookie($name, '', time()-43200, $params['path'], $params['domain'], $params['secure']); } // Destroy the session session_destroy(); ... then 2) do some more stuff 3) issue a redirect and 4) finally, after the whole page is done the register_shutdown_function(); I placed earlier runs and calls session_write_close() which saves the session to the database. The end. Since this blank response only occurs on logout I'm guessing that I'm not restarting the session properly which is causing session_write_close() to die fatally at the end of the script.

• Where does IE store the ASP.NET_SessionId cookie?

  I am a bit baffled here; using IE7, ASP.NET 2.0 and Cassini (the VS built-in web server; although the same thing seems to be true for "real" applications deployed in IIS) I am looking for the session-id-cookie. My test page shows a session id (by printing out Session.SessionId) and Response.Cookies.Keys contains ASP.NET_SessionId. So far so good. But I cannot find the cookie in IEs cookie-store! Nor does "remove all cookies" reset the session (as it does in FF)... So where - I am tempted to write that four letter word - does IE store that bloody cookie? Or am I missing something? By the way there is no hidden field with a session id either, as far as I can see. If I check in FF there is a cookie called ASP.NET_SessionId as I would expect. And as mentioned above deleting that cookie does start a new session; as I would expect. Can anybody imagine what is happening here?

• Is there a useDirtyFlag option for Tomcat 6 cluster configuration?

  In Tomcat 5.0.x you had the ability to set useDirtyFlag="false" to force replication of the session after every request rather than checking for set/removeAttribute calls. <Cluster className="org.apache.catalina.cluster.tcp.SimpleTcpCluster" managerClassName="org.apache.catalina.cluster.session.SimpleTcpReplicationManager" expireSessionsOnShutdown="false" **useDirtyFlag="false"** doClusterLog="true" clusterLogName="clusterLog"> ... The comments in the server.xml stated this may be used to make the following work: <% HashMap map = (HashMap)session.getAttribute("map"); map.put("key","value"); %> i.e. change the state of an object that has already been put in the session and you can be sure that this object still be replicated to the other nodes in the cluster. According to the Tomcat 6 documentation you only have two "Manager" options - DeltaManager & BackupManager ... neither of these seem to allow this option or anything like it. In my testing the default setup: <Cluster className="org.apache.catalina.ha.tcp.SimpleTcpCluster"/> where you get the DeltaManager by default, it's definitely behaving as useDirtyFlag="true" (as I'd expect). So my question is - is there an equivalent in Tomcat 6? Looking at the source I can see a manager implementation "org.apache.catalina.ha.session.SimpleTcpReplicationManager" which does have the useDirtyFlag but the javadoc comments in this state it's "Tomcat Session Replication for Tomcat 4.0" ... I don't know if this is ok to use - I'm guessing not as it's not mentioned in the main cluster configuration documentation.

• SQLAlchemy sessions - DetachedInstanceError?

  I have a function that attempts to take a list of usernames, look each one up in a user table, and then add them to a membership table. If even one username is invalid, I want the entire list to be rolled back, including any users that have already been processed. I thought that using sessions was the best way to do this but I'm running into a DetachedInstanceError: DetachedInstanceError: Instance <Organization at 0x7fc35cb5df90> is not bound to a Session; attribute refresh operation cannot proceed Full stack trace is here. The error seems to trigger when I attempt to access the user (model) object that is returned by the query. From my reading I understand that it has something to do with there being multiple sessions, but none of the suggestions I saw on other threads worked for me.
