• Can't create VM with virt-install on Debian wheezy

  Cant find any answers anywhere so here goes. I am trying to CREATE a new virtual machine using the virt-install command from a console on a Debian wheezy install. I keep getting the following output: Starting install... ERROR internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 inet_listen_opts: bind(ipv4,127.0.0.1,5951): Cannot assign requested address inet_listen_opts: FAILED I assumed that the port (5951 in this case) was being used judging by the error message and other sites I visited for an answer, but the same error occurs whatever number I use for the port. I cant see that port being listened upon in netstat either. Anyone have any ideas what may be wrong?

• Backing up Information Store - Recovering to Different Information Store / RSG

  Hi All, I have a question on a situation, that hasn't yet arrisen but I wondered the possibilities and how we go about it. Currently we backup our Exchange 2003 Cluster with Backup exec. Currently it is set to backup the Microsoft Information Store on that server and all of the Mailbox Stores beneath it. We have previously used this in conjunction with a recovery storage group on the same server to recover lost mailboxes. However, due to space constrictions on that server ( a seperate issue that is being addressed in the very near future but outside of the scope of this question) we now don't have enough space on that server to do a recovery storage group type restore. Is it possible, to restore an information store, to a different server in the same administrative group (ie first)? By that I mean we have the following: Server1 | First Storage Group | Mailbox Store1/2/3 Could Mailbox Store 1 be restored to: Server2 | First Storage Group | Recovery Storage Group Both servers are under the same Administrative Group Currently for whatever reason ( mainly time) the mailboxes are not being backed up individually. A number of "gotcha" mistakes can cause this, and it can be frustrating to figure out which one. When faced with the problem of Windows ignoring a hosts file, what is a comprehensive troubleshoot protocol that may be followed? This question has duplicates on SO, such as hosts file seems to be ignored, HOSTS file being ignored, /etc/hosts file being ignored as well as numerous discussions elsewhere. However, these tend to deal with a specific case, and once whatever mistake the OP made is found out, the discussion is over. If you don't happen to have made the same error, such a discussion isn't very useful. So I thought it would be more helpful to have a general protocol for resolving all hosts-related issues that would cover all cases.

  Hi, I do a lot of sketching with my pen-tablet. I use MS Paint in Windows 7, and it is just perfect except for anti-aliasing. I found some videos of Salman Khan, where his sketching is really smooth and anti-aliased. Do you know what program he might use? After trying and failing to implement my own EDIT feature in the standard moreNavigationController, I have decided to re-implement my own MORE feature. I did the following: Add a HOME view controller which I init with: initWithRootViewController Add 3 other default tabs with: ResortsListViewController *resortsListViewController; resortsListViewController = [[ResortsListViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ResortsListView" bundle:nil]; resortsListViewController.title = [categoriesDictionary objectForKey:@"category_name"]; resortsListViewController.tabBarItem.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"whatever.png"]; resortsListViewController.navigationItem.title=@"whatever title"; localNavigationController = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:resortsListViewController]; localNavigationController.navigationBar.barStyle = UIBarStyleBlack; [localControllersArray addObject:localNavigationController]; [localNavigationController release]; [resortsListViewController release]; Those work when i add them to the tabbar. • Trouble installing Lagarith Lossless Codec (Codec Removal?)

  I had been using the Lagarith Lossless Codec with camstudio on Windows XP Pro SP3 for a little while before I switched to Ubuntu. Now I'm back trying to do something on windows and the codec is now missing. I tried to install it via the .exe and even manually with the .inf but it's not being listed by camstudio as installed. I'm wondering if one of the other codecs I installed might have messed with it and yet some of the files are still fine so whatever method the installers use to check for existing files before install is returning positive and not re-installing it. How can I get Lagarith to work again? Maybe I need to know how to uninstall codecs.

I've tried the following rule: -- {{{ Rules awful.rules.rules = { { rule = {class = "Firefox" }, properties = { tag = tags[1]["www"] }}, } -- }}} However, if I hit Super+R then type 'firefox' or run 'firefox &' from a terminal, Firefox opens in whatever tag I'm viewing. I've tried {class = "firefox"} and properties = { tag = tags[1][2] } but those modified rules did not work either. What is the correct way to set up a rule to make firefox always open in a particular tag?

• Aventail VPN connect on Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard

  Hello, I am running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.2). Recently, my company switched (for whatever odd reason) from Cisco VPN (that used to work fine) to Aventail VPN. I proceeded to install the Aventail VPN client on both the mac and a Windows 7 machine, both on my home network. When I try to connect one or the other (I make sure one is disconnected before connecting through the other machine), I get a connection and view the correct certificate - accept it and Aventail tells me that I am connected. However, accessing any page inside my company's network is only possible on Windows. On the Mac I get the following page: http://grab.by/2WOA It looks like my ISP doesn't know how to redirect me? Maybe something about my DNS being set incorrectly on the Mac? Our helpdesk has been completely useless and I was hoping fellow super users can help. Thanks.

• Does this file format exist?

  Is there a file format that handles the following use case... I'd like to create a tar file (or whatever - I'm just using tar here b/c it's a well known file format for containing multiple files) that would be usable even if I only had access to specific chunks of said file. For example, say I tar up my mp3 and photo collection into a 100GB tar file, then put the file into some long term storage somewhere. Later, I want to access a specific mp3 file. I don't want to download the entire 100GB tar file just to get to one mp3. In fact, let's say I can't download the entire 100GB tar file. Instead, I'd like to say "give me megabytes 10 through 19 of the 100GB tar file" and then have the mp3 magically extracted from those 10 megabytes. Does a file format like this exist?

• Collectd on ubuntu with perl plugin support

  For days I am struggling with enabling perl plugin support for collectd. I have installed colllectd 5.4.0 on a Aws ubuntu 13.04. Configured compiled. I have even installed libperl-dev. But when i run ./configure from collectd installation , it still says that "perl ....(needs libperl)" Now enabling the perl plugins from collectd.conf didnt help much. In logs i see that : plugin_load: Could not find plugin "perl" in /opt/collectd/lib/collectd and indeed there is not perl.so or whatever in that folder. Can someone help me out with that ?

• LDAP over SSL/TLS working for everything but login on Ubuntu

  I have gotten OpenLDAP with SSL working on a test box with a signed certificate. I can use an LDAP tool on a Windows box to view the LDAP over SSL (port 636). But when I run dpkg-reconfigure ldap-auth-config to setup my local login to use ldaps, my login under a username in the directory doesn't work. If I change the config to use just plain ldap (port 389) it works just fine (I can login under a username in the directory). When its setup for ldaps I get Auth.log shows: Sep 5 13:48:27 boromir sshd[13453]: pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server Sep 5 13:48:27 boromir sshd[13453]: pam_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server... • Correct way to treat iptables init failure?

  Hi, I'm initializing my iptables rules via /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/iptables, using iptables-restore. This works fine, but I'm a bit worried about what would happen, if that script failed for some reason (maybe the saved iptables file is corrupt or whatever). In case the script failed, I'd like to: Start up my network interfaces without any iptables rules Start up OpenSSH server But not any other services like web server, ... (and maybe stop running instances) Is there a good canonical way to do that? Going into a lower init stage? - I haven't done that in a long time, and I think a lot about init has changed in recent years (?) - which stage should I drop to, and would the OpenSSH server and my network interfaces still run? • "Supervising" syslog-ng in htop

  Hello, I was working at my server, when in htop I just noticed something unusual. The syslog-ng process was listed as follows supervising syslog-ng /sbin/syslog-ng I don't know what it means. I tried to do man supervising but found nothing. supervising command doesn't exist too. Googling, I found a page about launchtool, but I can't find neither it or its man page in my system. I'm curious What does that executable/command/whatever do? Why today did I read that line in htop? Thank you. • What am I (a beginner) losing, by choosing Cherokee over Apache for serving dynamic content?

  I am a complete beginner and am planning to setup a photo sharing site. This is the setup I am planning, basically for a start - - Cherokee (instead of Apache) for serving dynamic content (python-based application), and Nginx for serving static files. Since, I am a beginner, what have I, to lose? So, can someone, from your experience, please tell me, what I'd lose by choosing Cherokee over Apache for serving dynamic content in PHP/Python/whatever? Anything other than the fact that there's lot of documentation, many people who can help when there's an issue etc as Apache is well established and the most popular web server? Again, my intention is not to spurt a flame war here. Just wanted to know if Cherokee would be better than Apache in terms of performance, reliability, and speed, when it matters (peak load times). Also, I heard it's a lot faster than Apache in serving dynamic content, is it true?

• Proper application shutdown before windows xp auto shutdown

  I frequently leave the computer on playing a movie or downloading a file while I go to bed. I do use the 'shutdown computer when finished' feature of KMPlayer or getright or uTorrent or whatever program I am using. This method effectively shuts down the computer, but the problem is that there are some applications that seem to exit forcefully when doing this kind of shutdown, this being clearly reflected in winamp not saving the current playlist and config, messenger not saving the chat logs, etc. My goal here would be to have automatically close properly all applications when the auto/scheduled program triggers it. I am looking for some Windows shutdown mode/setting that does application closing like the user would do. I am not expecting to auto-click on save dialogs prompts, if this is needed I will do it before leaving the computer on for auto shutdown.

• Dreamweaver Delete Space to Word, Not Word

  There's a built in DW keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Del) that deletes up to AND INCLUDING the first word to the right. I used to use the ColdFusion Studio app for coding and it would just remove the space UP TO the word (left the word or bracket, or whatever alone.) Any DW users know if this is a setting that can be changed? I'm really used to the old behavior and keep deleting the first word, hitting Ctrl + Z to put it back and then having to manually delete all the spaces to leave the word... • How does one get Vista to display .MOV thumbnails as a frame from the movie?

  I've discovered that Windows Vista explorer shell does not display proper "thumbnail"s for .MOV files. e.g. For .JPG files, the explorer shell, when in Thumbnail mode, displays a scaled down version of the image. But for .MOV files, it displays the same icon as in the non-thumbnail view, which is just some generic thing that shows you it's going to be played with Quicktime or whatever. What XP used to do was show you a frame from the actual movie as the thumbnail. I've looked on internet and found various proposed solutions, but none which actually work. Is there a simple step-by-step process for getting Vista to properly display thumbnails for .MOV files?

I want know, how I can create an isolated test environment for software testing purpose only, so anything will happen in that test vLan will not make trouble in the production environment. "Host-only networking" is the solution or there is a better way to achieve this result? My requirements A. Hosts should be able to access Internet and a Network Share drive but not Production network B. Hosts should connect each other inside the Virtual LAN C. I should be able to take automatic or periodic backup or snapshoot and deploy snapshot when necessary. Whatever your answer is, please give me steps, how to do, if possible. • How to disable modifying styles in word 2007?

  I'm just getting used to styles (always did the formatting "manually") so this may be overly simple question to some. I wish to modify styles once and for all, and then give that "design" to some of my coleagues, and they will use it to write ... whatever they need to write. But I wish to restrict them from modifying it. I.e. they should be able to make new documents using the given design, but shouldn't be able to modify the design. This make any sense? Any ideas?

• Removable vs fixed mount points in Linux

  What makes a mount point removable in Linux? I am using Gentoo Linux with Gnome 3.2, and I find it annoying that some of my drives (ex: /dev/sdb) appear as removable but not the others (ex: /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd). They are all in /etc/fstab, with the same options. They are all mounted properly at startup, they all work fine under my own folders /mnt/drive2 /mnt/drive3 /mnt/drive4. But only one of them (the first) appears in Nautilus (and in the Gnome 3 notification tray) as mountable/removable, not the others. Can I add options to my fstab to hide it? Or can I probe using udevadm or whatever? It looks strange to be able to remove/unmount fixed drives that I never need to unmount nor remove. Any pointer would be good, thanks.

With the exception on zip file I generally have not seen such a function on Window. However since there is an exceptions it is possible. • Fixing corrupt AVG vault? All files in USB drive are locked out.

  I was doing a virus scan on an external USB drive and while AVG was scanning my system got locked up and required a reboot. Since that time all data on the external drive is no longer accessible. I can see all the files in the root and directorys but I cannot browse into any of them as Windows 7 gives an error stating they are corrupt. If I show hidden files there is a hidden AVG directory that I know was not there to begin with and I am assuming it is some type of vault to protect files while being scanned. Well not the entire drives contents are unaccessible because I think whatever does the managing of the scan failed during the roobt and left the headers or something in a corrupt state. Does anyone know how to 'unlock' or recover this data? Luckily I can recover this data from other sources as a last resort but I would like to fix this if possible. Any help would be appreciated. • directory listing on Mac OS X

  I dumped a bunch of files (music and otherwise) onto my shiny new Macbook, and since I'm more comfortable with linux than Mac (at this point) I tend to use the terminal. I did a ls -al on the files I'd transfered, and some had an "@" at the end of the permissions string, and some did not. Something like: drwxrwxr--@ 93 user staff etc. drwxrwxr-- 107 user staff etc. The ones without "@" could be seen in Finder and accessed by other programs-- the "@" files and directories were invisible. Can anyone explain what the "@" means, and how to chmod (or whatever) so I can use these files? I assume it is some sort of system flag but I don't know how to unset it. Chmod 777 had no effect and I already own the files. Thanks

  Good day to all... I have some "little" problems with ffserver and ffmpeg... What I need to do is to broadcast a live video. So I got the cam... used vlc and used send stream option. I sent it to 192.168.1.9:64555, which is a virtual machine on the same computer, running centos. On the virtual machine I run the command ffmpeg -i 192.168.1.9:64555 output.mpg. • Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device" successfully

  Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. Whatever is being installed does so without error. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?
