• Windows Server Backup "Reading Data; please wait..."

  On windows Server 2008 R2 I have recently added the windows server backup (WSB) feature. Opening WSB I get the message "Reading Data; please wait...". This message fails to go away, even after leaving the server for over 12 hours. I also notice in the task manager that svchost.exe (username: networkservice) is using all available processing power. So I terminated that process and then WSB comes on-line. However after restarting the server and WSB the issue reoccurs. WSB also fails to recognize my store-in-go flash drive (2gb). What is the underlying problem here?

• "No active network adapters found" Hyper-V 2008 R2

  I fiddled around with the virtual network settings of my Hyper-V server, because Windows Update failed to run in the VMs. I set the flag that makes the NIC exclusively usable by the VM. Now, the host system tells me it has no active network adapters. What does that even mean? According to netsh, there are three enabled network connections. I tried to restart the NICs using devcon.exe (the correct x64 version), but that doesn't make any difference - still, devcon reports the NICs are there and they are activated?! Is there any way I can force the host to re-enable the NICs?

  Hey all, i am new at setting up a Windows Server so keep that in mind :o) I have following some tutorials online but all seem to have different settings/icons than i do. All i need to setup is a user and password so that i can ftp into the server from my home computer and upload files into the wwwroot directory. • Windows Server 2008: specifying the default IP address when NIC has multiple addresses

  I have a Windows Server which has ~10 IP addresses statically bound. The problem is I don't know how to specify the default IP address. Sometimes when I assign a new address to the NIC, the default IP address changes with the last IP entered in the advanced IP configuration on the NIC. This has the effect (since I use NAT) that the outgoing public IP changes too. Even though this problem is currently on Windows Server 2008 How can you set the default IP address on a NIC when it has multiple IP addresses bound? There is more explication on my probleme.   hi there, Im used to using windows server 2003 but decided to get a Vista web edition for IIS7 and to run our MVC applications on. I have installed copSSH that i use for SFTP, and when i upload my files i am unable to change persmissions or take ownership or anything when logged in as an administrator. when i try to go to permissions i get: The permissions on uploads are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. and all permissions are the grayed out. i have tried to use icacls to reset ownership and also tried to give myself full control through icacls however all attempts are met with a access is denied message and failed processing 669 files. all i wish to do is set up write and delete permissions on an upload folder for a CMS systems admin area, but i am a week into looking into this and i am still no wiser. Please could someone give some sound advice so i can get this running smooth thanks p.s i have added the copSSH notes as i think that when i SFTP the files to the server, this may somehow have some involvement in messing up permissions

• Windows Server 2008 Task Scheduler Tasks Not Executing

  I've been having an intermittent problem for some time now with the Windows Task Scheduler that I can't work out. I use the task scheduler to run a C# app I've written that has various plugins used to ensure production systems are working. This task scheduler itself is actually a production system so I have one simple task that executes every 8 minutes to notify an external monitoring system that the task scheduler is still up. If this external service fails to receive an "all-clear" at least once every 15 minutes (or so I don't remember the exact number right now) it will message us that the monitoring system is down. In the past we've had intermittent "down" messages from time to time and each time I've investigated the cause I was unable to find any problems. So this time I wanted to ask the StackOverflow community since it doesn't look like I'll have luck on my own. This morning at 2:32 AM the task fired (exactly 8 minutes after the previous firing) however the task didn't fire again until 3:28. There are no errors that I can see in the Event Viewer at this time. When I look at the Task Scheduler log there are no errors there either. I also have two other C# apps that run and check something each hour on the hour using task scheduler. If I look at the history for those I can see that they didn't execute at 3 AM either! They all waited until 3:28 to start as well. If I look at "tasks completed" in the Event Viewer it shows that only one task was able to run between the 2:32 AM to 3:28 AM time period. • Windows Server Backup - Can I restore to a particular revision?

  I'm using Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 to do a scheduled daily backup to a dedicated hard-drive on the server. I noticed that under "All backups" it says I have 45 copies. Does this mean that I can restore to any revision of my data upon system failure? If the answer is yes, then I don't have to worry about taking monthly or weekly snapshots of my data. I'm concerned about a data corruption event occurring that working its way into my backups... then not having a clean snapshot to go back to. Thanks!

• SBS 2008 DNS issues in BPA

  I'm gettng constant Critical Issue events in the Small Business Server Best Practices Analyser & resulting SBS Console reports that begin "The DNS client is not configured to point only to the internal IP address of the server.". When I check the DNS Manager, there are two separate IPs listed, one ***.***.***.2 and the other ***.***.***.28. I have checked online after an ipconfig /all and have found the reason for this to be that the second IP is created by DHCP for RAS & VPN purposes. It seems to cause no conflicts of any detrimental result apart from constantly sending me error messages and alerted reports. Does anyone know of a way that I can change settings somewhere so that Windows accepts this second IP, or at least stops alerting me of its prescence? Perhaps a registry hack of some kind...? • sysprep'd Server 2008 R2 VMware autocheck BSODs

  I'm trying to set up a template Server 2k8 R2 (Standard) VM in our VMware ESXi environment, we'll need to deploy a whole lot of them and I want to (a) streamline and (b) standardise the server build process. Originally I built a sysprep answer file using WAIK and the Windows System Image Manager - once I'd run sysprep using this, restarting the machine resulted in a "autochk.exe not found - skipping autocheck" message, followed almost immediately by a BSOD. Rebooting just resulted in the same thing. I first assumed it was my answer file, but have now checked this on a physical machine and it works fine. I've reinstalled the OS on the machine (and NOTHING else), and run sysprep.exe (ticking Generalize) - this produces exactly the same result. I've also attempted to use the Customisation Wizard built in to VMware - again, the same autocheck message and BSOD is the result. Any ideas? Let me know any further information I need to provide...

Now I am trying to install mysql-5.5.8-winx64 And I have an issue with configuring MySql to work using name pipes I did uncheck use of TCP/IP protocol and configuration wizard just hangs Update: I have found workaround.   I tried setting up triggers in Task Scheduler Windows Server 2008, but Microsoft needs to fix a bug that I documented on Stack Overflow. So I can't use triggers until they fix this bug. Here's where the XPath is stored for the Task Trigger XML tab (that I can't rely on): C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\ I cannot find where the events (or log files containing the event ids) of each task are stored. Does anyone know where to find these log files? The log name is "Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler/Operational".

I am able to successfully start tomcat on port 8080 as a standalong thing. Meaning I go to command prompt and type startup.bat and it starts up successfully. Question How can I resolve this and what are the things I should be troubleshooting for?

  My company has a Server with Windows Server 2003, and SQL Server 2000. We are planning to migrate just the database server, a provider said us the migration would be better to 2005 first, and then to 2008, because "the SQL Server 2008 is best suited for Windows Server 2008". Which are the pros and cons of each of these approaches? Migrate SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 and then to SQL 2008 Migrate SQL 2000 directly to SQL 2008 NOTE: Changing Operating System is not an option ($$$) right now for the company. Any article or experiences would be very much appreciated

• Restoring permissions on Windows 2008

  I have played with folder permissions due to SVN not being able to write to a folder and now I got into a state where I go to any folder of C: drive in Windows Explorer and when I right-click it takes 30 seconds to show the context menu and it just hangs the window after that. It definitely has something to do with permissions as it was all working fine until I started tweaking permissions about an hour ago. My login belongs to two groups Users and Administrators. I changed ownership of C drive to Administrators group and I think it screwed everything, but I can't change it back because I don't even remember what it was :) Oh, and only Administrators group has access to drive C now. Any way to reset permissions to some previous state or some workable state?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 Replication log reader could not execute sp_replcmds

  This log reader agent worked perfectly for several months until the user referenced in the error was removed from the domain. After that time the error 'The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'SERVER'' was received with more detail 'Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user' that referenced said user. This user was referenced nowhere in the the log reader agent other than the Publication Access List from which it was subsequenctly removed. The agent would still not successfully start up. The simple problem here, I believe, is that the log reader agent was created under that user and that no longer exists in the domain. Is there an 'owner' somewhere that needs to be changed? Every other function on the database continues to execute successfully. Any other help or thought would be appreciated.

• Windows Server 2008 r2 FTP blocking outside connections

  I have a windows server 2008r2 running IIS 7.5. I am trying to setup a FTP-server in IIS but I'm running into some annoying problems. Setting up the server works fine but when I try to connect from a remote client the connection times out. I have tried to connect to the FTP-server from the localhost and it works flawlessly. I figured that it should be some trouble with the firewall so I went into firewall settings and disabled the Public Profile and my remote connections worked! In my inbound rules there are rules for FTP-connections to allow all profiles etc. I guess they are made automatically when setting up the FTP-server. Anyone got any idea how to allow remote connections without turning off the public firewall?

• Apache Issues on Windows Server 2008

  I'm looking to reinstall Apache 2.2.25 since I continue to get these errors in the Windows Application log every 2-5 minutes: Faulting application name: httpd.exe, version: 2.2.25.0, time stamp: 0x51dd049c Faulting module name: zlib1.dll, version: 1.2.3.0, time stamp: 0x4790446a Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00002bad Faulting process id: 0x38e8 Faulting application start time: 0x01cfbfd70cdfbc4f Faulting application path: C:\Apache2\bin\httpd.exe Faulting module path: C:\Apache2\bin\zlib1.dll Report Id: 745f20de-2bca-11e4-bd5d-002590f28d7e If the new install doesn't work or if there are some "issues", can I simply restore the Apache2 directory from backup and then I'll just be back where I started? I thought about just renaming the current install to something like c:\apache2_old and if something fails, I can delete the new install and rename c:\apace2_old back to c:\apache. What do you all think?

  In line with this post: http://www.hugheserblog.com/2012/05/22/error-creating-iis-smtp-virtual-servers/ I am receiving the same issues: When we tried to add more than 4 IIS SMTP virtual servers, we got the error within IIS, “The system cannot find the path specified.” This post is almost 2 years old and my server is up to date with Windows updates so I assumed it would be fixed already. Does anyone know if I need to do something special (ie. contact Microsoft) to get a special fix for this? The information in the post suggests it should have been included in an update.

  I am currently running SQL server 2008 (SQLserverold) which homes databases for systemn center Service Manager 2012 Datawarehouse. This server is very old and needs to be decommisioned. Prior to decomissioning the serve, the databases have to be migrated to another clustered SQL server with two nodes(SQLServer1 and SQLserver2). I am not a DB admin no experience in SQL, and I have been given the task of migrating the Databases on the old server to the new custered environmnet. • Disk Cleanup on Server 2008 R2 is ineffective

  I have a user profile with ~2.9GB of Error Reports backed up in the ReportQueue folder (C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue). Running DiskCleanup as the administrator does not detect these files and therefore does not clean them up. However, running the utility as the user shows an even larger amount (12.4GB!) of error reporting files. As seen below: The problem is that after running the cleanup utility the disk spaced used does not decrease by anywhere near 12.4GB and running the utility again detects the same 12.4GB of files. What is the problem here? Alternatively, can I manually delete the files in the ReportQueue folder?

• Server 2008 R2 file access permissions

  I'm finding it awkward to sort out permissions for file sharing and access on my LAN. I've created an account on the server node (as a normal user) and shared a drive that has 2 folders at the root, one is for personal file storage and the other shared files, if I connect to the shared area from a workstation running windows 7 and log-in using the account I created on the server, I can look through directories but can't look in some (which I wanted as I changed the permissions for that to happen), but my problem is although the permissions are set for this user account to have full control of the specific folder I can't create a folder in that area or upload files to that folder. Could someone explain why this is? Thanks in advanced

• Disable RDC Welcome Screen in Windows 2008 R2

  Is there a way to disable or bypass the "Welcome" screen I see when I'm using RDC to log in to a machine using saved credentials? I have startup task which launches an RDP session automatically to localhost when the machine boots. This works, except that the remote desktop window stops and waits for an "OK" on the Welcome screen: MACHINENAME-A.B.C.D(Server ID:Console 0) Welcome [OK] This screen is preventing me from automating this login. Is there any way to get around it? EDIT: Here's the command line I'm currently using to launch it: start /min C:\windows\system32\mstsc.exe c:\rdp\ServiceRunner.rdp
