  I was enjoying "The Humble Programmer" earlier today and ran across this choice quote: Therefore, for the time being and perhaps forever, the rules of the second kind present themselves as elements of discipline required from the programmer. Some of the rules I have in mind are so clear that they can be taught and that there never needs to be an argument as to whether a given program violates them or not. Examples are the requirements that no loop should be written down without providing a proof for termination nor without stating the relation whose invariance will not be destroyed by the execution of the repeatable statement. I'm looking for which of Dijkstra's 1300+ writings best describe in further detail rules such as he was describing above.

• Can anyone tell me if this is possible to do in Linq?

  So I have been working and trying for a couple of hours. I am creating a BubbleBreaker type of game. I Can do it using for loop or while but I am trying to also get practice in using Linq. Here is what I am trying to do in pesudo code. Each Bubble has a Column and Row Property. If The bubble subtracts one from its Column property and finds the same Color bubble, it should Select it then Subtract -1 and see if two bubbles away there is also a same color bubble. If there is then subtract -2 and so on. So What I am trying to do is var test= _theBubbles.TakeWhile((i, s) => i.BubbleColor== bubble.BubbleColor)//Then somehow tell it to do bubble.Column-s and then Subtract s from bubble.Column So the Idea is to keep looking down the column till the bubble isnt the same

• Problem in passing arrays from C# to C++

  Hi, I have an application in which I need to pass an array from C# to a C++ DLL. What is the best method to do it? I did some search on Internet and figured out that I need to pass the arrays from C# using ref. The code for the same: status = IterateCL(ref input, ref output); The input and output arrays are of length 20. and the corresponding code in C++ DLL is IterateCL(int *&inArray, int *&outArray) This works fine for once. But if I try to call the function from C# in a loop the second time, the input array in C# is showing up as an array of one element. Why is this happening and please help me how I can call this function iteratively from C#. Thanks, Rakesh.

• Linux issues on setting a timer function

  I am creating a process with 2 children, 1 of the children is responsible to read questions (line by line from a file), output every question and reading the answer, and the other one is responsable to measure the time elapsed and notify the user at each past 1 minute about the remaining time. My problem is that i couldn't find any useful example of how i can make this set time function to work. Here is what i have tried so far. • Formatting a query to enumerate through 2 different datatables

  I have 2 datatables sendTable and recvTable They both have identical column names and numbers of columns "NODE" "DSP Name" "BUS" "IDENT" "STATION" "REF1" "REF2" "REF3" "REF4" "REF5" "REF6" "REF7" "REF8" I need to compare these 2 tables and separate out the mismatches I only need to check Columns 3-11 and Ignore col 1 and 2 I tried at first removing the 2 columns and then loop thru row by row and return matches and mismatches but the problem with this approach is that I no longer have the "NODE" and "DSP Name" associated with the row when I finalize my results So I need help with a query Here is my attempt var samerecordQuery = from r1 in sendTable.AsEnumerable() where r1.Field<int>("BUS").Equals(from r2 in recvTable.AsEnumerable() where r2.Field<int>("BUS")) this obviously doesn't work so how do I format the query to say from r1 cols[3-11] equals r2 cols [3-11] and once I have this I can use the except to pull out the mismatches

  Hi there, I have written a class which loads configuration objects of my application and keeps track of them so that I can easily write out changes or reload the whole configuration at once with a single method call. However, each configuration object might potentially throw an exception when doing IO, yet I do not want those errors to cancel the overall process so that the other objects are still given a chance to reload/write. Therefore I collect all exceptions which are thrown while iterating over the objects and store them in a super-exception, which is thrown after the loop, since each exception must still be handled and someone has to be notified of what exactly went wrong. However, that approach looks a bit odd to me. Someone out there with a cleaner solution? I need to create a matrix of the same size, that counts maximum values in each column and puts 1 in the cell that contains maximum value, and 0 elsewhere. A little example.   Using the jQuery $.post function, if you send a null value, it arrives at the server side as "null". Example: Javascript: $.post('test.php', { foo : null }); PHP: var_dump($_POST['foo']); // string(4) "null" I understand why this is so, but was wondering the best way to work around the limitation? Should you: Loop through all the variables in JS before you send them and replace with an empty string? Interpret "null" as null on the server side? Don't send the variable at all? Something else?

Right now, my script run through a for loop echoing each value to the standard output: for value in ${values[@]} do echo $value done Yeah, that's pretty ugly! And the one column listing is pretty long too... I was wondering if i can find a command or builtin helping me to display all those values in columns, like the ls command does by default when listing a directory (ls -C). • django + xmppy: send a message to two recipients

  I'm trying to use xmpppy for sending jabber-messages from a django-website. This works entirely fine. However, the message only gets sent to the -first- of the recipients in the list. This happens when I run the following function from django, and also if I run it from an interactive python-shell. The weird part though, is that if I extract the -body- of the function and run that interactively, then all the recipients (there's just 2 at the moment) get the message. Also, I do know that the inner for-loop gets run the correct count times (2), because the print-statement does run twice, and return two different message-ids. • How can I programmically construct the object reference?

  Lets just say that I have three textboxes: TextBox1, TextBox2, TextBox3. Normally if I wanted to change the text for example I would put TextBox1.Text = "Whatever" and so on. For what I'm doing right now I would like to something like (TextBox & "i").Text. That obviously isn't the syntax I need to use I'm just using it as an example for what I need to do. So how can I do something like this? The main reason I'm doing this is to reduce code with a loop. Please keep in mind that I'm not actually changing the text of the textboxes I'm simply using that as an example to get the point across.

  I've been experimenting with Instruments off and on for a while and and I still can't do the following (with any sensible results): determine or estimate the average runtime of a function that's called many times. For example if I'm driving my gameLoop at 60 Hz with a CADisplayLink I'd like to see how long the loop takes to run on average... 10 ms? 30 ms etc. I've come close with the "CPU activity" instrument but the results are inconsistent or don't make sense. The time profiler seems promising but all I can get is "% of runtime"... and I'd like an actual runtime.

• I want to move 1 array to another in C#

  Hi, This is just a quick question in C#. I have a scenario where I am working with several devices that all have slightly different data to work with. When I work out which device I am using, I want to set up a common array to use throughout the code, say arrayCommon. So I want to move the info from device1 to the common array. Do I have to do this in a loop for each occurance in the array or can u move the whole array into the common array, as you could in Cobol all those years ago ? Thanks, George.

  Hello, We develop for a specific embedded device at our company, and part of that is making initial root disks that get loaded onto the devices over ethernet via netboot. We've experienced some problems, and as a result, the original folder with the contents of the initial root disks was lost along with its backups, but we do still have the initrd images, that have been created by gzipping the contents of a ramdisk that's been mounted as a local loop device, and then running mkimage on the gzipped file. Is there any way to undo the effects of mkimage and obtain the original gzipped content so that we can recover the original images ?

  I am looking to create n-grams from text column in PostgreSQL. I currently split(on white-space) data(sentences) in a text column to an array. select regexp_split_to_array(sentenceData,E'\s+') from tableName Once I have this array, how do I go about: Creating a loop to find n-grams, and write each to a row in another table Using unnest I can obtain all the elements of all the arrays on separate rows, and maybe I can then think of a way to get n-grams from a single column, but I'd loose the sentence boundaries which I wise to preserve. • C++ boost or STL `y += f(x)` type algorithm

  hello. I know I can do this y[i] += f(x[i]) using transform with two input iterators. however it seems somewhat counterintuitive and more complicated than for loop. Is there a more natural way to do so using existing algorithm in boost or Stl. I could not find clean equivalent. here is transform (y = y + a*x): using boost::lambda; transform(y.begin(), y.end(), x.begin(), y.begin(), (_1 + scale*_2); // I thought something may exist: transform2(x.begin(), x.end(), y.begin(), (_2 + scale*_1); // it does not, so no biggie.   I am looking for the equivalent of running "File - Save All" before certain Rake macros. If I make a copy of a file in the solution explorer, that file is not included in the project file (.CSPROJ) after Pre_Rake() runs. I would still have to press CTRL-SHIFT-S or File - Save All. So, how to Save All with a Visual Studio Macro?

• Basic PHP question for Drupal Views theming

  My PHP and programming knowledge is extremely basic, so this is probably a dumb question: I am theming a View in Drupal 6, and I want to add an id with a consecutive number to each item in the view (first item would have the id #item1, the second #item2, etc). I am customizing the style output (views-view-unformatted--MYVIEWNAME.tpl.php) and the row style output (views-view-fields--MYVIEWNAME.tpl.php), and I want to add a counter variable in the foreach loop in the style output tpl, and then use that variable in the row style output tpl, but the last one is not recognizing the variable. It does not give me any errors, but doesnt print the number. I understand this has probably something to do with variables visibility, how can I declare the counter variable in the style .tpl so I can the use it in the row style .tpl? Thank you

• NSDictionary causing EXC_BAD_ACCESS

  I am trying to call objectForKey: on an nsdictionary ivar, but I get an EXC_BAD_ACCESS error. The nsdictionary is created using the JSON-framework and then retained. The first time I use it (just after I create it, same run loop) it works perfectly fine, but when I try to access it later nothing works. I am doing this code to try to figure out what is wrong: if (resultsDic == nil) { NSLog(@"results dic is nil."); } if ( [resultsDic respondsToSelector:@selector(objectForKey:)] ) { NSLog(@"resultsDic should respond to objectForKey:"); } The dictionary is never nil, but it always crashes on respondsToSelector. any ideas?

  I have three lists of words. I would like to generate a single list of all the combinations of words from the three lists. List 1: red green blue List 2: one two List 3: apple banana The final list would like like so: red one apple red two apple red one banana red two banana ... and so on Ideally I'd like to pass in three arrays and the routine return one array. I have done a simple loop like so: foreach $word1 (@list1){ foreach $word2 (@list2){ foreach $word3 (@list3){ print "$word1 $word2 $word3\n"; } } } However, this doesn't work if there's nothing in the second or third list (I may only want to iterate between one, two or three lists at a time - in other words, if I only supply two lists it should iterate between those two lists).

  Here is my current code: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^example\.com [NC] #RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}!^something RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([^.]+)\.example\.com RewriteRule (.*) something/%1/$1 [QSA,L] My goal is to rewrite http://*.example.com/whatever to http://example.com/something/*/whatever, assuming * is the same for both and whatever is the same for both. However, I believe this is causing an infinite loop somehow, so I added that commented out line (RewriteBase is / btw), but if I uncomment then the entire site is a 500 response code. Without that line, only the subdomains error. What am I doing wrong, and how can I fix this? I have already configured the server so anything gets redirected to my public_html folder. EDIT: For clarification, I am trying to do an internal redirect, not external. EDIT: There is not a flag for internal redirect it seems. Is there any place I can see the actual error message for the broken rewriterule? If I knew what was wrong I would be able to stand a better chance of fixing it.
