• Why do programmers write applications and then make them free?

  As an entrepreneur/programmer who makes a good living from writing and selling software, I'm dumbfounded as to why developers write applications and then put them up on the Internet for free. You've found yourself in one of the most lucrative fields in the world. A business with 99% profit margin, where you have no physical product but can name your price; a business where you can ship a buggy product and the customer will still buy it. Occasionally some of our software will get a free competitor, and I think, this guy is crazy. He could be making a good living off of this but instead chose to make it free. Do you not like giant piles of money? Are you not confident that people would pay for it? Are you afraid of having to support it? It's bad for the business of programming because now customers expect to be able to find a free solution to every problem. (I see tweets like "is there any good FREE software for XYZ? or do I need to pay $20 for that".) It's also bad for customers because the free solutions eventually break (because of a new OS or what have you) and since it's free, the developer has no reason to fix it. Customers end up with free but stale software that no longer works and never gets updated. Customer cries. Developer still working day job cries in their cubical. What gives? PS: I'm not looking to start an open-source/software should be free kind of debate. I'm talking about when developers make a closed source application and make it free.

• Need to use DART, can't access windows at all

  I have an install of windows server R2. After installing two patches, the system is stuck in a reboot loop. I wish to uninstall these patches to revert my stsem to normal. I have looked at dism, but it does not seem to provide a way to uninstall specific MSP patches. I don't believe I can utilize msiexec in WinRE to uninstall the patches. And so, I believe DART is what I need, which will allow me to uninstall specific patches. However, I cannot access my install of windows at all, which is what is apparently needed to make the dart media. Is there any way around this?

• Linux for a laptop? [closed]

  I would like to install Linux on a laptop. So I have emptied the hard drive, and can boot off a CD. So far I have failed to format the hard drive to Linux, to install Linux, and to change it so that I don't have to hit escape when loading in order to boot from CD (or get Linux on the hard drive and boot to it). The old laptop has 640 MB RAM, 600*800 screen, a CD drive and USB mouse and floppy drives. I eventually mean to use it to look at PDFs if possible, or RTFs that I converted from PDFs if not.

• Complex Release Vehicle Management

  I'm looking into improving our build and release system. We are a .Net/Windows shop, and I don't see any really good tools for Windows for generating the files that are to be dropped in patch or hotfix. We are currently using TFSBuild 2010 with Windows Workflows for our continuous integration builds as well as our daily full build which includes an Installshield package for deployment. What is a good way of generating the list of files to be included in a "patch" style release, where one does not redistribute all the files, but only those necessary to accomplish the necessary changes? Are there any open source tools that work well for this, or do teams usually roll their own? I have considered using Beyond Compare but I would prefer something open source. The file "patch" creation must be 100% automatable. Which release vehicles really ought to be patch style? And which releases should replace all system files related to our application? Assume we have a very large amount of resources necessary to maintain. Is there any established material that is trusted within the industry for strategies about this? I realize it is different for "enterprise" rather than with typical websites. I am looking more for "enterprise" strategies due to our product distribution style. tl;dr Looking for info on how to ship more reliable packages?

• Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

  I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously. • Where to put code documentation?

  I am currently using two systems to write code documentation (am using C++): Documentation about methods and class members are added next to the code, using the Doxygen format. On a server Doxygen is run on the sources so the output can be seen in a web browser Overview pages (describing a set of classes, the structure of the application, example code, ...) is added to a Wiki I personally think that this approach is easy because the documentation about members and classes is really close to the code, while the overview pages are really easy to edit in the Wiki (and it's also easy to add images, tables, ...). A web browser allows you to see both documentations. My co-worker now suggests to put everything in Doxygen, because we can then create one big help file with everything in it (using either Microsoft's HTML WorkShop or Qt Assistant). My concern is that editing Doxygen-style documentation is much harder (compared to Wiki), especially when you want to add tables, images, ... (or is there a 'preview' tool for Doxygen that doesn't require you to generate the code before you can see the result?) What do big open-source (or closed source) projects use to write their code documentation? Do they also split this up between Doxygen-style and a Wiki? Or do they use another system? What is the most appropriate way to expose the documentation? Via a Web server/browser, or via a big (several 100MB) help file? Which approach do you take when writing code documentation?

  I have the dreamspark MS license. However, everytime I have to install Windows on my PC, I get many updates and this process is long and boring. Is there any way to download the lastest Windows ISO with updates? I'm trying to install Windows 7 (but Windows 8 would also be helpful). Note: I don't want just download windows. I want to download the OS with the lastest updates, those that are downloaded with Windows update after installing it!! Thanks!

• NodeJS Supervisord Hashlib

  I have an problem with my NodeJS app. The problem is the include of the library Hashlib I've followed more than 10 times the instructions to install. Get a clone of the repo, do make and make install. NodeJS is installed in default path, and that's the tricky point: When I launch node app.js it works, perfectly. The problem starts when I configured my Supervisord to run with the same user, with the same config file as I have in other systems working, and I get that NodeJS can't find hashlib. module.js:337 throw new Error("Cannot find module '" + request + "'"); ^ Error: Cannot find module 'hashlib' I'm getting crazy, what can I do?! Why my user launching node from the console works great, but not the supervisord? Thanks!

• How do I deploy a charm from a local repository?

  I am trying to run the Charm tutorial from the juju documentation by creating a new charm from a local repository. I started by installing the charms from bzr to my local ubuntu 12.04 desktop running in a virtual machine. The new file structure is the following: ubuntu@ubuntu-VirtualBox:~$ find charms/precise/drupal/ charms/precise/drupal/ charms/precise/drupal/hooks charms/precise/drupal/hooks/db-relation-changed charms/precise/drupal/hooks/install charms/precise/drupal/hooks/start charms/precise/drupal/hooks/stop charms/precise/drupal/metadata.yml charms/precise/drupal/README When I install the mysql charm, which was downloaded from the remote charm repository, it works fine.   I think the steps are something like: Install DD-WRT on a router with an external hard-drive Install Optware to get Samba Upgrade to Samba 3.6 (the link shows Samba 3.5, but using the NSLU2 optware packages, you can get 3.6 with built-in SMB2.0) ...then a miracle occurs... Then you can use SMB2.0 to connect to your share What is step 4? I can't find it on forums, etc. Am using Microsoft Network monitor to check for SMB2.0 connection, I'm on Windows 7 and have tried network connections on wireless and gigabit wired to the router.   I had to remove some file headers in a bigger project which were all of the form #region File Header /*[ Compilation unit ----------------------------------------------------------       Name            : Class1.cs       Language        : C#     Creation Date   :      Description     : -----------------------------------------------------------------------------*/ /*] END */ #endregion I know that would be a cool thing to write a simple C# program use a recursive file search, read all lines skip the first n lines and write the files back to disc. But I wanted to test things first before I ruin my source files with one little typo. There comes the Visual Studio Search and Replace in Files dialog into the game. I can test my regular expression to do a multiline match with the Find button before actually breaking anything. And if something goes wrong I have the Undo button.   There is a nice blog post from Paulo Morgado online who deals with Multiline Regular expressions. The Visual Studio Regular expressions are non standard so you have to adapt your usual Regex know how to the other patterns. The pattern I cam finally up with is \#region File Header:b*(.*\n)@\#endregion The Regular expression can be read as \#region File Header Match “#region File Header” \# Escapes the # character since it is a quantifier. :b* After this none or more spaces or tabs can follow (:b stands for space or tab) (.*\n)@ Match anything across lines in a non greedy way (the @ character makes it non greedy) to prevent matching too much until the #endregion somewhere in our source file. \#endregion Match everything until “#endregion” is found I had always knew that Visual Studio can do it but I never bothered to learn the non standard Regex syntax. This is powerful and it is inside Visual Studio since 2005!

• How can I convert the Nvidia driver installer into a deb?

  Every so often there's a beta version of the Nvidia driver that I want to try out. This has happened today: there's been a big performance issue with version 295.40 and I want to try the shiny new XRandR-enabled 302.07. I'm more than able to download the installer, remove all the repo-installed driver files and install the new version but it's frankly a pain in the bottom to turn that around and go back to the repo version. It also means I have to re-install the driver manually each time there's a Kernel upgrade. The other option we commonly give people is a PPA but in this case I'm being really impatient. It's going to be a few days before any PPA gets this but I need to try this today. I've already manually installed it on the media centre and I'm eyeing up my desktop now. So how do I take an installer (eg: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run) and convert that into a new nvidia-current/nvidia-current-updates package? Another way of asking this might be: How do people package the Nvidia drivers?

  Possible Duplicate: Fixing Broken Packages I am trying to install the nautilus-actions-extra package via synaptic. When I do synaptic advises me that I have broken packages. I have followed How do I locate and remove Broken Packages that I have installed? but when I select the Status category, I do not have a 'Broken Dependencies' option. When I click on the 'Broken' item in the Filter category nothing is displayed. I am using Ubuntu 12.04LTS. What can I do to resolve this?   I had Ubuntu 13.04 running in a VirtualBox (the host is WinXP). I've upgraded it to 13.10 but I've some issues: Gnome desktop is not working correctly (I can log in but the main menu bar remains empty - I can only log out with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) I cannot build and install the VirtualBox Guest Addons: When trying to build it, it says: me@virtuntu:/etc/init.d$ sudo ./vboxadd setup Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done. Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. • SRSS Client Print Module must be downloaded every use

  I am currently having an issue with SQL Server Reporting Services. Everytime a user clicks the print button for the report, the user must install the ActiveX client print module. The issue is that our clients are not admins on their computers. So therefore they can not install the module. I have gotten around this roughly by adding the SQL address to trust sites, setting "Download signed Active Controls" to enable, and then giving the users permission to write to "C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files". However, this is fix is not easy to distrubute to our user base. I am using SQL Server 2008 SP3 CU3 running on Server 2008 R2. I believe the browser thinks the version is newer than what is on the server. I have tried downloading the print module CAB file from the SQL server and installing manually. That did not work either.   So I have a Debian machine and I want to transfer data on here to a Windows based FTP account. I've managed to open up firewalling for outbound FTP on the Debian source, but have never used FTP via CLI before. Does anyone know how I can go about transferring data? I am starting to get really confused with what to transfer from where. If I ssh to the Debian machine and then connect to the Windows FTP account, then try put and get commands, it never seems to recognise the path of the source files on the Debian machine.

  I want to achieve following: (Note I'd like to get this done first of all with Win7 as both host and vm OS) Install Windows 7/xp/Windows 8 VM on Windows 7/Windows 8 host machine Configure it so that I can connect to it via remote desktop. This is because I use a screen reader software and audio output directly from VMs is not highly responsive. My software has a feature that it can connect to its copy on the remote machine (during rdp session) and then start receiving the text description which it translates into audio on the client (host in this case) machine. I want to know: Which VM software can let me do this – VMWare/Ms Virtual PC or VirtualBox If it is possible with every VM software, could you give an example of how to do this with anyone of these 3? Specifically, I know how to install Windows on VM (on both VMWare/Virtual PC), but don't really know how to configure a network such that I can remote into that VM from host OS. Hope it clarifies what I'm trying to achieve.

  I'm exploring a piece of code in Architecture Explorer in Visual Studio 2010 to study the relations between methods. I noticed a strange behavior. Take the following source code. How would it be possible, without changing the source code, to: Either force Architecture Explorer to display everything, including lambda expressions, Or make it traverse lambda expressions while drawing a dependency through them (so in this case, drawing the dependency from GenerateHelloMessage to DefaultTemplateEngine in the second example)?

• KVM Guest not reachable from host

  Hello, I'm running Ubuntu server 9.10, installed KVM etc. Created the bridge network following instructions on help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking Created a windows 2008 guest using virt-install command line (using virt-manager GUI from a remote Ubuntu desktop would not let me select the ISO location). I can however use a remote virt-manager to connect to the guest and complete the windows install. Within windows 2008 I changed the IP address but cannot ping from outside world. The bridge network appears fine - I'm not sure what else to look at! Here is the interfaces file: The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet manual # auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 60.234.64.50 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 60.234.0.0 broadcast 60.234.0.255 gateway 60.234.64.49 bridge_ports eth0 bridge_stp off bridge_fd 0 bridge_maxwait 0 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.12.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.12.255 The ip of the windows server is 60.234.64.52 What else should I check?
