• Weird routing issue (updated)

  I just updated the route tables due to a mistake on my part. I am working on getting networking working correctly on a cluster of 14 virtual servers at a customer site. 11 of them work fine for routing and 3 don't work correctly for their administrative network (172.28.56.0). All are running Windows Web Server 2008R2. Default gateway is set on the production network (172.28.58.0) and not on the administrative network (handled with persistent static routes). • How to create a "retro" pixel shader for transformed 2D sprites that maintains pixel fidelity?

  The image below shows two sprites rendered with point sampling on top of a background: The left skull has no rotation/scaling applied to it, so every pixel matches perfectly with the background. The right skull is rotated/scaled, and this results in larger pixels that are no longer axis aligned. How could I develop a pixel shader that would render the transformed sprite on the right with axis aligned pixels of the same size as the rest of the scene? This might be related to how sprite scaling was implemented in old games such as Monkey Island, because that's the effect I'm trying to achieve, but with rotation added. Edit As per kaoD's suggestions, I tried to address the problem as a post-process. The easiest approach was to render to a separate render target first (downsampled to match the desired pixel size) and then upscale it when rendering a second time. It did address my requirements above. First I tried doing it Linear -> Point and the result was this: There's no distortion but the result looks blurred and it loses most of the highlights colors. In my opinion it breaks the retro look I needed. The second time I tried Point -> Point and the result was this: Despite the distortion, I think that might be good enough for my needs, although it does look better as a still image than in motion. To demonstrate, here's a video of the effect, although YouTube filtered the pixels out of it: http://youtu.be/hqokk58KFmI However, I'll leave the question open for a few more days in case someone comes up with a better sampling solution that maintains the crisp look while decreasing the amount of distortion when moving.

• Snow Leopard - resolving hostnames issue

  This worked in Leopard, although since Snowie came along … I have a Location setup with a DNS server to use [eg 10.0.0.17] , and a search string [eg sub.dom.ain.com] In the terminal: $ nslookup cake Server 10.0.0.17 Address: 10.0.0.17#53 Name: cake.sub.dom.ain.com Address: 10.0.0.38 So works like a charm. Although if I just the hostname cake in any other application within OSX - such as Safari/CoRD, they simply can't resolve the hostname. I have to instead use the FQDN cake.sub.dom.ain.com - why is this so? Why did this work in Leopard and is now broken? Would love a solution. Thanks

• Fast programmatic compare of "timetable" data

  Consider train timetable data, where each service (or "run") has a data structure as such: public class TimeTable { public int Id {get;set;} public List<Run> Runs {get;set;} } public class Run { public List<Stop> Stops {get;set;} public int RunId {get;set;} } public class Stop { public int StationId {get;set;} public TimeSpan? StopTime {get;set;} public bool IsStop {get;set;} } We have a list of runs that operate against a particular line (the TimeTable class). Further, whilst we have a set collection of stations that are on a line, not all runs stop at all stations (that is, IsStop would be false, and StopTime would be null). Now, imagine that we have received the initial timetable, processed it, and loaded it into the above data structure. Once the initial load is complete, it is persisted into a database - the data structure is used only to load the timetable from its source and to persist it to the database. We are now receiving an updated timetable. The updated timetable may or may not have any changes to it - we don't know and are not told whether any changes are present. What I would like to do is perform a compare for each run in an efficient manner. I don't want to simply replace each run. Instead, I want to have a background task that runs periodically that downloads the updated timetable dataset, and then compares it to the current timetable. If differences are found, some action (not relevant to the question) will take place. I was initially thinking of some sort of checksum process, where I could, for example, load both runs (that is, the one from the new timetable received and the one that has been persisted to the database) into the data structure and then add up all the hour components of the StopTime, and all the minute components of the StopTime and compare the results (i.e. both the sum of Hours and sum of Minutes would be the same, and differences introduced if a stop time is changed, a stop deleted or a new stop added). Would that be a valid way to check for differences, or is there a better way to approach this problem? I can see a problem that, for example, one stop is changed to be 2 minutes earlier, and another changed to be 2 minutes later would have a net zero change. Or am I over thinking this, and would it just be simpler to brute check all stops to ensure that The updated run stops at the same stations; and Each stop is at the same time

• Google Account Changes that Messed Up My Ability to Manage Sites

  I hope you can help... I have a google account that I use to manage my church website. This account is set up with my work email address. My work (a school system) is in the process of changing us all over to use google accounts to replace Outlook. When I logged in to this new account (which is my same email address) it no longer lets me manage my google site. • Setting up Windows 2008 with VPN and NAT

  I have a Windows 2008 box set up with VPN, and that works quite well. NPS is used to validate the VPN clients, who are able to access the private address of the server, once connected. I can't for the life of me get NAT working for the VPN clients, though. I've added NAT as a routing protocol, and set the one on in the VPN address pool as private, and the other as public - but it still won't NAT connections when I add a route through the VPN server's IP on the client side (route add SomeInternetIp IpOfPrivateInterfaceOnServer). I know I can reach the server's private interface (which happens to be 10.2.2.1) with remote desktop client, so I can't think of any issues with the VPN.

• How to revoke gnupg public key without private key?

  Long story short I have an key generated with seahorse and mistakenly deleted it from my system. I do remember passphrase but I don't have this key anywhere on my system. Scanned trough Ask Ubuntu but couldn't find any aplicabile solution on similar issue. However public key is still updated on keyring servers and I would like to revoke it. Since I have no revocation certificate and I can't get hold of private key (only public key is available from keyservers which I imported to seahorse) I have no idea how to accomplish it. Spent some time searching for solution acros net, various manuals and so on, but so far no luck. gpg --list-secret-keys - returns no output at all. gpg --list-keys - returns public key info gpg --gen-revoke *user-id* - returns - gpg: secret key *user-id* not found: eof gpg (GnuPG) version 1.4.11. Anyone able to suggest a solution?

  I just launched a wordpress site as a redesign of my strictly html site and added my blogger blog to Wordpress to keep it all in one place. I am trying to send an html email from my Wordpress site to all of my blogger subscribers encouraging them to subscribe to my new blog and join my newly created membership program, but every html email plugin (that I have found) imports your your users with you Wordpress users before you can send them an email. Is there a plugin that allows me to send an html email to a list of email address without adding them as users? otherwise I will have to go through and delete all of my users (after importing the list and sending the email) and try to pick out my legitimate users who have already signed up all the while watching for new ones to make sure I don't delete them.

• Where did this incorrect cached DNS lookup come from?

  Somehow, I've been having a chronic issue where my computer will get an invalid DNS lookup in its cache for either of the two Exchange servers I use from Mail.app. My workplace runs one of the Exchange servers and I run the other (they are totally unrelated, hosted by different companies, etc.). The problem manifests as a certificate domain error. When it happens, I can run nslookup mail.mydomain.com and I see the incorrect IP address (usually owned by either Apple or Akamai), but if I run nslookup mail.mydomain.com 8.8.8.8, I get the correct address. My real quest is to find out why this keeps happening, and to do that, I'd like to know which server is supplying me this bad DNS entry. Is there a way to check my DNS cache to see where this bad lookup came from?

• Rate-Limit affects All clients or single IP?

  Well up-til now I've considered iptables rate-limit commands with the "recent" module to work for each IP Address. For example rate-limit rule of 20k/s will trigger only if a single IP exceeds 20k/s rate and not if 4 different IPs exceed 5k/s rate. Please correct me if I considered this wrong as I've only used these rules for TCP/ UDP. But today I tried similar rules for ICMP and applied 4/s Input/Output. But then on trying to ping-test from just-ping.com I could see packet loss on almost all IP Addresses. How could that happen because if it worked for each IP Address then it wouldn't be triggering the rule because I believe each IP from just-ping has a rate of probably 1/s. I still think the first one is true because if it wasn't then my GameServer would block everyone if the combined rate ( in case of more connected players ) increased the threshold. This hasn't happened up til now so the ICMP thing really confused me. Thank you.

• Using USB to Ethernet with Linux Ubuntu 12.04

  Being a newbie, Please excuse if the technical Jargon used is not an universally accepted one :) I have a particular device (say device A) whose USB2.0 driver is available from Linux community. Linux UBUNTU12.04 based PC is able to detect that device via the available driver. My requirement is to ensure that PC can exchange the command as well as data with the device A over TCP/IP packets (In other words, instead of just a USB Based driver, there should be a TCP/IP wrapper over the device USB driver and still does the same job as the USB driver was doing before) Bought an USB (Female) to RJ-45 adapter,connected Device A (male) USB to the USB Female end of the adapter and the Ethernet end connected to the router. PC also is connected to the same router so that both Device A and the PC have the IP address in the same subnet range. So the packets produced by the device A can be routed to the PC via some binding( not sure how I can achieve this, but conceptual idea) Here are the issues I can see as of now 1) USB to RJ-45 is just a hardware signal conversion and not a NIC in itself and hence no MAC/IP ADDRESS assigned. Call the web service with the HttpHeaders you just build in the previous step and store the response in the variable ResponseContent. 5. The ResponseContent variable is the Dynamic values (in SharePoint designer it will be called dictionary type) and it is new feature for SharePoint2013 workflow.   I'm trying to set up an Apache server that uses ProxyPass to pass HTTPS requests on to another server. Let's call the proxy server ALPHA and the target server BETA. ALPHA does not run HTTPS, but BETA does. I first tried using this virtual host specification on ALPHA: <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName mysite.com ProxyPass / https://192.168.1.105/ # BETA's IP address ProxyPassReverse / https://192.168.1.105/ # BETA's IP address ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyTimeout 600 SSLProxyEngine On RequestHeader set Front-End-Https "On" CacheDisable * </VirtualHost> But when I tried this, Apache complained saying, "[error] Server should be SSL-aware but has no certificate configured [Hint: SSLCertificateFile]". I had to copy the SSL certificate from BETA to ALPHA and add these lines to the host specification on ALPHA: SSLEngine on SSLCertificateKeyFile /usr/local/ssl/private/BETA_private.key SSLCertificateFile /usr/local/ssl/crt/BETA_public.crt SSLCertificateChainFile /usr/local/ssl/crt/BETA_intermediate.crt Now the system works. But I have a feeling that I have done something wrong or unnecessary. I have the web site's private key and certificate lying on both ALPHA and BETA. Is that necessary? Should I have done it differently?

• Windows 7 and XP Networking

  I'm trying to setup a home network between a windows 7 and windows xp machine. I have a small hub. My XP computer has a manually assigned IP address (192.168.0.10) and I set my Windows 7 machine to have a manually assigned IP address (192.168.0.15). The XP computer works, but the Windows 7 machine does not see the network. It says that there is no connectivity. Ping does not work from either machine. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• How do developers verify that software requirement changes in one system do not violate a requirement of downstream software systems?

  In my work, I do requirements gathering, analysis and design of business solutions in addition to coding. There are multiple software systems and packages, and developers are expected to work on any of them, instead of being assigned to make changes to only 1 system or just a few systems. How developers ensure they have captured all of the necessary requirements and resolved any conflicting requirements? An example of this type of scenario: Bob the developer is asked to modify the problem ticket system for a hypothetical utility repair business. They contract with a local utility company to provide this service. The old system provides a mechanism for an external customer to create a ticket indicating a problem with utility service at a particular address. There is a scheduling system and an invoicing system that is dependent on this data. Bob's new project is to modify the ticket placement system to allow for multiple addresses to entered by a landlord or other end customer with multiple properties. The invoicing system bills per ticket, but should be modified to bill per address. What practices would help Bob discover that the invoicing system needs to be changed as well? How might Bob discover what other systems in his company might need to be changed in order to support the new changes\business model? Let's say there is a documented specification for each system involved, but there are many systems and Bob is not familiar with all of them. End of example. We're often in this scenario, and we do have design reviews but management places ultimate responsibility for any defects (business process or software process) on the developer who is doing the design and the work. Some organizations seem to be better at this than others. How do they manage to detect and solve conflicting or incomplete requirements across software systems? We currently have a lot of tribal knowledge and just a few developers who understand the entire business and software chain. This seems highly ineffective and leads to problems at the requirements level.

  So, we have a situation where we would like to be able to redirect (ignoring original destination) emails coming through out exchange server (locally sent) to a different email address. The situation is as follows: Testing a new server, this hosts a lot of our custom applications / scheduled tasks (as does the production version of this server). Instead of changing config files / parameters for these applications we'd rather leave them as they are, as we want to be as close to production as possible, however we don't want the emails go to the staff they would normally go to, we'd rather they were sent to a test email address where we are able to confirm the results. The emails look exactly like the production emails (same from / to / cc / bcc) except their source, hence why we'd like to know if the ability to redirect based on hostname exists. Cheers.

This can be done as follows for a standard interface like eth0 iface eth0 inet6 static address myprefix:mysubnet::myip gateway myprefix:mysubnet::mygatewayip netmask 64 pre-up /sbin/sysctl -q -w net.ipv6.conf.$IFACE.autoconf=0 pre-up /sbin/sysctl -q -w net.ipv6.conf.$IFACE.accept_ra=0 However, how can this be done for bonded interfaces? using the "all" interface does not work. Systems is Ubuntu 10.04, 2.6.24-24-server. If one uses the above sysctl command for the bond0, the networking hangs on boot, because /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/bond0 does not yet exist and cannot be written to. One the system has booted /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/bond0 exist, so one solution after booting is to add the following to /etc/rc.local: /sbin/sysctl -q -w net.ipv6.conf.bond0.autoconf=0 /sbin/sysctl -q -w net.ipv6.conf.bond0.accept_ra=0 /etc/init.d/networking restart and this has the desired effect, the autoconfig v6 address disappears. Seems like a bit of a hack though, are there better solutions?
