• How can I determine what is killing my network adapter win7 or vista?

  I thought this issue was like another person here, and that downloading the nvidia chipset drivers was the solution. However that is not all that is going on. This machine had Vista 64bit and is now Win7. Same issue with both. I have explicitly been denying network driver updates since getting things working again and when a Windows updates occurs on seemingly benign Office updates the adapter fails to work. Is the update process somehow protecting this machine by turning off things and it fails to recover connectivity after a restart? All that seems to ever work is a system restore. Which does work. Since there are 25 pending updates asking to do there thing, I hate to think this is a one by one update test to find the culprit. Any ideas? This has an integrated nic, video, and I guess audio on the motherboard. ES5200 intel cpu on a gateway 4800-05e I am not quite sure how to determine the actual network adapter. This is a wired adapter. I suppose worst case I can try another adapter if this keeps happening.

• Windows 7 Won't Boot

  I recently built a new computer, my fifth one. When I went to install the OS it did the same thing wouldn't go past the windows logo, so I put the new HDD into my old computer and installed windows 7 thinking it was just an installer error. Put the fully installed HDD back into my new machine and it still gets stuck on the starting windows screen. I've tried most everything I've looked up. Disabled USB, Disabled Turbo Boost, Disabled everything that wasn't essential(just about every configuration I can think of), took it apart and put it back together, took all the ram out save one 4g stick(wouldn't even boot when I did this), did a memory scan which came back successful, I don't know what could be wrong. Only thing I can think of is a compatibility issue somewhere, but I've ran over it again and again and I don't know where there would be an issue like that. Need Backup! .<

• 10GE network: Is it still deadly expensive? Any options?

  Hi! I am building home cluster where I going to have about 16 nodes which can live with 1G ports, but I really want to have 10GE on file server & central node. It's all local, so no need for cabels longer than 3-5m. And ofcourse I want to spend as little money as possible (not going to spend more than whole cluster costs) :-) What are my options? 1) Legacy solution is to take some 24-48 port 1GE switch, and connect to file/central nodes via 4-8 aggregated links. This will work I guess, cost is very acceptable, but I am not sure if it's ok to use that much aggregated links. And ofcourse it would be hard to double bandwidth when needed... :-D 2) Switch with several 10GE uplink 'ports'. As far as I see, they all require modules which costs about 1000$, so I will need 4 10G modules, and 2 10GE cards... Smells like way more than 5000$+... 3) Connect file & central node via 2 10G cards directly, and put 4 quadport 1GE NICs on fileserver. I am saving on 2 10G modules and a switch, fileserver will have to do packet routing, but it's still gonna have alot of CPU's left :-) 4) Any other options? Infiniband? 5) Are MyriNet adaptors works fine? I guess there are no cheaper options? 6) Hmm... Scrap fileserver, put it all on central node and provide dedicated 1GE port for each of the nodes... This is sad...

• Is VGA port hot-pluggable?

  In meetings, I often see people detaching the VGA connector from one running laptop and connecting it to another, while the projector is still on. Is this 100% risk free, and OK by design of the VGA standard? If there's a risk involved in hot-plugging VGA, can it be removed by turning off or suspending either laptop, display, or both? I see this being done all the time without causing disaster, so clearly I'm not interested in answers stating "we do it all the time, so it should be OK!". I want to know if there's a risk - real or in theory - that something breaks when doing this. EDIT: I did an internet search on the topic, and I never found a clear statement as to why it is safe or unsafe to hot swap VGA devices. The typical form is a forum question asking basically the same question as I did, and the following types of statements Yes it's hot swappable! I do it all the time! It involves some kind of risk, so don't do it! You're some kind of moron if you think there's a risk, so just do it! But no explanation as to why it safe or not... Joe Taylors answer below contains a link to a forum post and answers that basically give me the same statements as mentioned above. But again, no good explanation why. So I looked for an actual manual for a projector, and found "Lenovo C500 Projector User’s Guide". It states on page 3-1: Connecting devices Computers and video devices can be connected to the projector at the same time. Check the user’s manual of the connecting device to confirm that it has the appropriate output connector. • Syncing Multiple Google Calendars and with Outlook and Android

  Perhaps this is a multipart question, but I deal with a lot of calendars in my life, and want to know if there is some way to sync them all together, and maintain appropriate privacy. So I have a family calendar that my ex and I maintain for kid events, and I have a personal calendar for my own life, and I have an Outlook work calendar, for work. Ideally I'd look at my calendar on my Android phone. Is it possible to sync them all together? Is it possible for there to be one calendar to rule them all on my phone, but have the other calendars blank out spaces that are from other calendars, but only show the blanked out without the details. (I don't want my date with Miss Hottie to appear that way on the family calendar, and I probably don't want my visit to the proctologist to appear in the corporate exchange server.) Are there tools available to do this? Bonus question, can I do the same with my to do lists? Double bouns question -- how can I solve world hunger and help us to all live together in peace? :-)

• using a second computer as a mere screen/monitor in X (VNC?)

  Hello My goal is to use three monitors with my Linux system. It is a laptop, so adding another video card is not the easiest solution. (I have investigated a number of such options: getting a docking station with a PCI slot, USB/Cardbus vga adapters, etc, and for the time being don't want to go that way.) I am wondering if using an older desktop+screen I have lying around as the third "monitor" might be the easiest solution, if only there is a way to get it to work as a seamless, integrated desktop. I was wondering if I can use VNC or perhaps X itself (?) to achieve the following: computer A is my main computer; it has all my files, etc. computer B is used just to display on an additional screen keyboard+mouse are connected to computer A use VNC or X to connect the two so that computer B shows a X screen that is just as if it was a third physical screen connected to computer A. I don't know if the last point is clear, but what I mean is that I would like to be able to: be able to have my window manager assign/move around virtual desktops on all three screens move windows back and forth between the screens attached to computer A and the screen of computer B be able to copy something in an app being shown on a screen of computer A and paste it into an app being shown on the screen attached to computer B access the filesystem on my main computer (A) when using applications that are being shown on the screen attached to computer B Basically, I would like X to treat computer B just like it was nothing but a third physical screen... • How to serve media across home network?

  I'm looking to share my media across my home network. Router fully supports running a DLNA server, but I don't know if it'd be better to run the server from my main server computer instead of from the router, as the router would have to operate off of a network share and my server can operate directly off of the files. Here's what I need to serve, in order of importance: ISO 1:1 DVD rips (4-8GB files), MP4/H.264 encoded videos, MKV videos, MP3 files, JPEG/CR2 images. Maybe I'm completely ludicrous for wanting to push full DVD files across my network, but in reality, I would assume that only the parts of the actual file needed (ie: menu, main video payload for main title) would be served at any one time. Plus, encoding takes time and precious disk space, so why not stream it 1:1 ;) Does anyone know of the best way to accomplish this? Main goal is to serve it to Logitech Revue downstairs and secondary goal is to serve it to other computers in the house. For music, I assume I could run a DAAP server, but I don't think that the Revue supports that (and I can't exactly throw together an app that does it just yet).

• Firefox cannot render icons from Font Awesome webfont set

  In Firefox (Windows 7), icons and glyphs that are called from the Font Awesome package do not render properly. An example of this can be seen on the Khan Academy website. Below the video the icons are shown as boxes with hex codes in them. This means that it isn't getting downloaded by Firefox. How it appears on Chrome (Windows 7), Safari (Mac OS X) and Stainless (Mac OS X): I found this question on Stack Overflow that may explain why this happens -- the CSS does use single quotes to enclose the font's src location. However, I don't have any write access to Khan Academy servers so I can't modify the actual website. I want to know if this can be fixed in Firefox, and how. I can run Greasemonkey scripts if that would help. I've already tried manually downloading the font and adding it to Windows' Fonts folder but this does not help. • is ksplice production ready?

  I would be interested to hear the serverfault community's experiences with Ksplice in production. Quick blurb from wikipedia: Ksplice is a free and open source extension of the Linux kernel which allows system administrators to apply security patches to a running kernel without having to reboot the operating system. and Ksplice can, without restarting the kernel, apply any source code patch that only needs to modify the kernel code. Unlike other hot update systems, Ksplice takes as input only a unified diff and the original kernel source code, and it updates the running kernel correctly, with no further human assistance required. Additionally, taking advantage of Ksplice does not require any preparation before the system is originally booted (the running kernel does not need to have been specially compiled, for example). In order to generate an update, Ksplice must determine what code within the kernel has been changed by the source code patch. So a few questions: How has the stability been? any odd issues that you have encountered with its 'rebootless live patching' of the kernel? Kernel panics or horror stories? I have been running it on a few test systems and so far its been working as advertised, but I am interested in what other sysadmins experiences have been with Ksplice before going 'all in' and deploying this on our production servers. So, anybody using Kspice in production? update: hmm, not seeing any real activity on this question after a couple of hours (besides some kind upvotes and favs). Maybe to spark some activity I'll also ask a few more questions and see if we can get this discussion going... "If you are aware of Ksplice, is there a reason you are not using it?" • Add single sign-on into existing web app

  Apologies if this isn't the best site, I've search for an answer but can't find anything quite right. I don't actually now the correct terminology I should be using here, so any pointers will be appreciated. I have a web application that accessed by many different users across different organisations. Access is provided by each user having a unique username/password which is stored in SQL (database fields are customerID, userID, username). Some organisations are now asking if we can change this to allow "Active Directory single sign-on" so that users don't need to remember yet another set of login details. From research I can see how this is achieved using OpenAuth and Google (etc), but I know hardly anything about AD and can't find much information on this (again I'm sure it helps when you know the terminology). Is this request even possible to achieve, given that most users will be from different (and unrelated) organisations? I saw on a Microsoft Build video not long ago that there is some kind of replication service for AD to allow Cloud authentication. Is this what I should be aiming for?

• Apache directory authorization bug (clicking cancel gives acces to partial content)

  I got a minor problem (as the site is not high priority) but still a very interesting one. I have an apache root domain wherein other sites live "/var/www/" And I have foo.example.com forwarding to "/var/www/foo-example" (wordpress site) The problem here is that when you go to foo.example.com you are prompted to enter credentials. If you hit cancel it gives you the access denied page. But when you go to the servers' direct IP (this gives you the default index page) and hit cancel when prompted for credentials it just keeps giving you the login screen, and after pressing cancel a few times more it gives (a perhaps cached) bare html part of the page. How do I prevent this from happening? Perhaps this is a bug... Even if I would block access to the root directory when going to the ip/foo-example it would still do this. And I want to keep all the directories within the www directory or at least all in the same. • Autologin 2 Windows users OR Login another user from the desktop

  I'm using two windows users on my HTPC at the same time. One is just for watching videos and one for administration via remote. This setup is quite ideal for me since windows can handle multiple concurrent logins and the win "rdp concurrent hack" (Google). The problem is, I want both users to be logged in automatically when the pc was started. It shall be possible to watch tv and also the admin user shall be automatically logged in to start my scripts and other tasks, even if I haven't logged in via remote desktop manually. Later, when I want to admin my htpc I can just rdp connect the admin user without interrupting the video playback on the actual HTPC's screen and check my cleanup tasks, downloads, ... witch already executed for this admin user. But right now I found no solution to automatically login user A from a user B desktop and I also found no solution to autologin both users immediately at startup. As a workaround I have to fire up my other notebook machine and login one time with the remote user via rdp. From this time on the remote admin user is running concurrent with the main user in the background of the machine. The other workaround would be... after startup switch user from main user to admin user and then back again. But that also requires manual steps. I'm on a Windows 8 System right now but all infos for Win7 or XP would be also interesting. thanks a lot for all ideas. PS: just to prevent useless posts... don't tell me that only one user can be logged in to windows. ;)

• Radeon 6950 - Garbling of text and graphics in certain Windows only

  This morning I noticed the text in Gmail (in Firefox 4) looked a little funny (kind of thin, maybe some color fringing). I went to work and thought it might be some ClearType issue or something with the way Direct way that FF4 draws to the screen. When I came back from work (I left the computer on), the problem was much worse - way beyond ClearType nit-picking. The text was barely readable. I opened Chrome and there was no such problem. It seems like only Windows that use hardware acceleration are garbled, and ones that use GDI are not. But, I fired up Dragon Age and didn't notice any problems (I only really looked at the main menu though). Here is a link to a screen shot that illustrates the problem. Notice how the Windows Live Mesh window is completely unreadable, the text in Firefox 4 (left) is pretty bad, while Chrome, the Windows Control Panel, and the task bar are perfectly fine. The fact that the problem shows up in screen shots and that it only happens in certain Windows makes me confident that the problem cannot be with the monitor or DVI cable. I am using the AMD Radeon drivers from 4/27/11. The card I have (MSI Frozr II) came with a slight overclock (810Mhz) out of the box, but it looks like when I'm on the Windows desktop it's not running at full clock (CCC reports 450Mhz). Still, I underclocked it to the stock reference clock (800Mhz) and it made no difference. The idle temperature according to Afterburner is 42-44 Celsius, which seems a tad high but not enough to cause a problem - it's cold to the touch if I open up the machine. What the heck could be causing this? The problem varies in intensity. As we speak I'm in Firefox and things look better than they did earlier - it'll probably get worse again soon. • Safemode Startup Issues on Vista 64 Bit

  Before i ask the question, let me point out that this is not a hardware issue. I have a clean install of vista on another hd that runs on same hardware, i am pretty sure its a corruption of a drive or a file, i presume it might be video driver. When windows wont start via normal boot i just get black screen after initial load up of os, so i boot into savemode, I end up having black screen with a mouse pointer visible, after initial load of os. The shut down button is responsive. Of course, I can install clean copy of os, and prior to that can retrieve all other files that i need by accessing hd itself, i can restore my pc from my external back up as well. Although i have all these options, i was wondering if there anything else i can do that can help me fix this issue. In save mode, it looks like I am capable of logging in after initial load of os, even though i cant see the process it self, i do see the mouse pointer. By visual memory i navigated to password field, and entered my password, hit enter, I get the loading mouse pointer, nothing really changes, same black screen and mouse pointer, but when i tried to access task manager for a second i got a safemode watermark at all four corners. Any help would be appriciated. Thank you in advance.

• Using fedora 17 commandline 'mail' program cannot send to hotmail

  I am trying to use the console in Fedora 17 to send an automated email to myself. I run this: echo "email content" | mail -s "blah" [email protected] It works fine, google treats it as a spam email, but when you mark it not spam everything is cool. For Hotmail there are policies to prevent the email from being sent. I do this: echo "email content" | mail -s "blah" [email protected] And the email returns as undeliverable, the email does not even appear in the spam folder and I get this as a response: ----- Transcript of session follows ----- ... while talking to mx3.hotmail.com.: >>> MAIL From:<[email protected]> SIZE=685 <<< 550 DY-001 (BAY0-MC3-F8) Unfortunately, messages from 184.90.101.28 weren't sent. Please contact your +Internet service provider. You can tell them that Hotmail does not relay dynamically-assigned IP ranges. +You can also refer your provider to http://mail.live.com/mail/troubleshooting.aspx#errors. 554 5.0.0 Service unavailable So apparently hotmail doesn't like spammers so much, they they are blocking anything with a dynamically assigned IP range. Google does not do this. What is the easiest way to just get around this and send an email to hotmail and end up in their spam folder to be unblocked later by the user?

• How can I wipe my iPod classic and fix any bad sectors on the hard drive without killing it?

  My iPod never finishes syncing and only syncs audio, not pictures or video. Any ideas as to how I can fix it? My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated? Update I have eliminated problems with the files, PC or iTunes as they sync fine to other iPods. I have also eliminated the cable by trying different cables which work with other iPods. What I'd really like to know is if there is any way to more fundamentally wipe the iPod safely, attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard drive and then start from scratch. Anyone ever managed this?

• Cannot Access Shared Folder From IIS

  From IIS I need to access a folder on another computer. Both servers are Window 2008 SP2, and they live in a Virtual Private Cloud on Amazon EC2. They reach one another by private IP -- they are in WORKGROUP, not a domain. I can access the shared folder manually when logged in to the client as Administrator. But IIS gets "access denied." Here's what I have done: Set File Sharing = ON Set Password Protected Sharing = OFF Set Public Folder Sharing = ON Shared the folder Added permission to the share: Everyone, Full Control Added permission to the share: NETWORK SERVICE, Full Control Verified that File & Printer Sharing is checked in Windows Firewall Opened port 445 to inbound traffic from local sources I tried adding <remote-machine-name>\NETWORK SERVICE to the share but it says it does not recognize the machine, which makes sense, I guess. As I said, from the other computer I have no trouble accessing the shared folder from my user account, but IIS is shut out. How does the file server even know the difference? I would assume that with Everyone given full control and password protected sharing turned off, it would not matter what the client user account is. In any case, how to solve? UPDATE: To clarify, I am not trying to serve up files on the share directly through IIS. Rather I am writing files to the share from my code (System.IO).

We now host their domain (and many others) on our server. They're complaining that they're getting errors in Outlook. I don't understand the AutoDiscover stuff at the root of the problem, but believe that I just need to stop the SSL certificate on our server being returned when requested at a particular domain: Yes it is, the issue lies with "{newclient}.com" being pointed to your server IP and that server has Port 443 open with an SSL certificate associated to it. So when Outlook/ActiveSync use autodiscover to find the mailbox settings it find your SSL (because 443 is open) and flags it as an error. The solution is to close 443 so its not discovered, Autodiscover will then proceed to mail.{newclient}.com via the MX / ServiceRecords and discover the correct SSL. I'm new here and there was no hand-over, so I don't know whether other currently hosted sites need to accept SSL connections, though I suspect some will, or may in future. This is a live server, so I can't risk trying loads of options in case I take the server offline! I feel like I should be adding something like the following to vhosts.conf. <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName {newclient}.com ServerAlias www.{newclient}.com SSLEngine Off SSLCertificateFile {NONE} SSLCertificateKeyFile {NONE} </VirtualHost> Apologies for the fact that I don't know enough about this subject to be able to ask the question more clearly!

• PHP 5.3.2 Upgrade on Windows

  I have a development box running Windows XP, Apache 2.2.15 Mysql and PHP 5.2.6 About a month ago I updated the Apache to the latest version and it went swimmingly. I am not having the same success with upgrading PHP to the latest version. I backed up my PHP directory and then deleted it. Used the Windows Installer for PHP 5.3.2, installed as an Apache 2.2.X module. I can get "Hello World" and phpinfo() to come up but cannot get mysql to connect. I have the extension un-commented in the php.ini and shouldn't really have to touch the Apache httpd.conf file since I didn't change the directory of PHP. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. I have to get this right and then upgrade the Live Server too so I want to get this down pat. I've tried to use installation guides on the web with no luck. Any info pertaining to this problem would be great. I'm also afraid that the other PHP modules may not load but cannot really tell anything past mysql not working.

• AVConv increases song duration when converting MP3

• BackupExec 2012 File System Archiving - Access is denied to Remote Agent

  Gentlemen, I've been struggling with a Trial version of Symantec Backup Exec 2012 for about a week now. It was installed as an upgrade to our 12.5 license, and the setup completed with no issues. The reason I upgraded is solely for the File System Archiving option as I'm working to reduce the amount of live data in my servers. Backups work A-Ok and I have followed the instructions in the Admin Manual to make sure I had filled all requirements. The account BE is running under is a member of the Local administrators group as required and has been added to the test share that I'm using to evaluate the archiving function. Testing the credentials in the job setup window always works fine, and I am able to add both regular and Admin$ shares to my Archive selection. However, every time I run the Archive job, I get the following message: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/59540229/BEXec.png I've already tried to troubleshoot DNS resolution issues as suggested in the Symantec KB to no avail. The only thing I can think of, at this point, is that a trial license doesn't allow me to use the Archiving function, although that would seem silly on their part. • Tools to manage sql 2008 database mirroring?

  We are going to be moving about 20 databases that live on a single instance of sql 2000 to a sql 2008 r2 environment with database mirroring. What I'm looking for is a tool or scripts that will help me manage the conversion and management of those 20db's onto this new mirrored environment easily. There are many steps in setting each DB up and I want to automate as much as possible. Edit: Here are the steps I've been doing manually: Create the same username/passwords from the old sql 2000 server onto new sql 2008 server. Then sync those users/passwords onto the other sql 2008 server with the same SSID's so when we do the db backup and restore they match up. Take a backup of each sql 2000 db's. Copy them to server A. Restore the backup to server A. Backup from server a, copy to server b, restore there. Run the mirror "configure security" wizard. Start mirroring. I've love to be able to script this out or have a tool that does it for me. Thanks! Paul

• Why does my PC successfully boot only when unplugged for more than a few minutes?

  I have an HP Pavilion Elite desktop computer, model HPE-490t. I like it because it didn’t cost too much, boots itself from an SSD, came with 16 GB of RAM, and has 6 CPU cores for editing video and camera RAW images. It has one behavioral quirk that I cannot explain, however. The recent power interruptions here in the Northeast got the machine into a state where it could not be restarted. It would power up for a second or two, shut down, and then power up again, never being able to get to the point of showing anything on the monitor. I unplugged it for about 10 seconds and plugged it back in. Same behavior (fails to boot). I unplugged it and walked away for an hour, then plugged it back in and it worked perfectly! I think something similar happened after installing a second hard disk drive into this machine. So the question is why does the computer behave differently depending on how long it has been unplugged? Where is energy stored that affects the machine’s ability to boot? Capacitors in the power supply? Battery on the motherboard (there is one for the clock, but that wouldn’t be exhausted by being unplugged for an hour, I don’t think)?

• Nagios check_host_alive and check_ping not showing host as down

  I am using the check_host_alive command to send 5 packets every minute to all my routers at remote locations. I noticed today I received a notification from The AT&T Global Client Support Center that a router was down (which can take 5-30 minutes to send these notices out) and never received a notice from Nagios. I went onto Nagios and it is was showing the host as alive with a latency of 0ms. This tells me it is seeing the automated response from my router in the data center that, "TTL expired in transit" as a reply from the remote router. Is there anyway for me to tell nagios to check where the reply is comming from? I feel like other people have to of had this issue... I tested it with the check_ping command and it produced the same results. I have the command defined has %hostname% and the proper IP in the host definition, and it works fine for telling me the latency is high. Any ideas are welcome, I have already exercised my Google skills with no results.
