• Should I aim for fewer HTTP requests or more cacheable CSS files?

  We're being told that fewer HTTP requests per page load is a Good Thing. The extreme form of that for CSS would be to have a single, unique CSS file per page, with any shared site-wide styles duplicated in each file. But there's a trade off there. If you have separate shared global CSS files, they can be cached once when the front page is loaded and then re-used on multiple pages, thereby reducing the necessary size of the page-specific CSS files. So which is better in real-world practice? Shorter CSS files through multiple discrete CSS files that are cacheable, or fewer HTTP requests through fewer-but-larger CSS files?

• Usability: Save changes using "Apply" button or after every single change?

  I am interested in hearing opinions and experiences of fellow developers on topic of designing user interface, usability AND maintainability-wise. Common approach is to allow users to tweak options and after form gets "dirty", enable "Apply" button, and user has possibility to back out by pressing cancel. This is most common approach on Windows platform (I believe MS usability guidelines say to do so as well). Another way is to apply changes after every single change has been made to options. Example, user checks some checkbox, and change is applied. User changes value of some text box, and change is applied after box looses focus, etc. You get the point. This approach is most common on Mac OSX. Regardless of my personal opinion (which is that Apple is better at usability, but software I usually write targets Windows users), what do you people think?

• Vimperator and scripts directory on Windows 7

  Just trying out Vimperator for the first time. For the life of me however, I can't figure out how to add a script (specifically for delicious bookmarks). Running Windows 7 x64. No plugin directory: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\dgj7o1s1.default\extensions\[email protected] No plugin directory in default location: C:\Users\username\vimperator If I create the "plugin" directory, the script is still not available. Any suggestions? I'm really liking Vimperator, but when you can't figure something out, you really CAN'T figure it out.

• Select in a many-to-many relationship in MySQL

  I have two tables in a MySQL database, Locations and Tags, and a third table LocationsTagsAssoc which associates the two tables and treats them as a many-to-many relationship. Table structure is as follows: Locations --------- ID int (Primary Key) Name varchar(128) LocationsTagsAssoc ------------------ ID int (Primary Key) LocationID int (Foreign Key) TagID int (Foreign Key) Tags ---- ID int (Primary Key) Name varchar(128) So each location can be tagged with multiple tagwords, and each tagword can be tagged to multiple locations. What I want to do is select only Locations which are tagged with all of the tag names supplied. For example: I want all locations which are tagged with both "trees" and "swings". Location "Park" should be selected, but location "Forest" should not. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

• A 'do' statement at the end of my perl script never runs

  In my main script, I am doing some archive manipulation. Once I have completed that, I want to run a separate script to upload my archives to and FTP server. Separately, these scripts work well. I want to add the FTP script to the end of my archive script so I only need to worry about scheduling one script to run and I want to guarantee that the first script completes it work before the FTP script is called. After looking at all the different methods to call my FTP script, I settled on 'do', however, when my do statement is at the end of the script, it never runs. When I place it in my main foreach loop, it runs fine, but it runs multiple times which I want to avoid since the FTP script can handle having multiple archives to upload. Is there something I am missing? Why does it not run? Thanks

• Debugging a Browser Redirect Loop

  Hi all, I am using CakePHP with the Auth and ACL components. My page loads fine for non-registered users, but if I try to log in as a registered user I get an infinite redirect loop in the browser. I am sure that this is some sort of permissions problem, but the problem exists even for users who have permissions for everything. The only way to prevent this behavior is to allow '*' in my AppController's beforeFilter method. What is the best way to debug this sort of problem? Thanks!

• <thead> and <tfoot> in Safari

  I trying to print a page with multiple tables. The problem is that any of these tables may break and carry over to the next page. Have been trying to get the table header to repeat on the second page. Am currently using thead and setting the display property to table-header-group. This works just as expected in IE and firefox but the header will not repeat in Safari. Since we are using software that converts our page to a pdf document for printing...and the 3rd party software uses a Safari engine, we are stuck with this problem. Does anyone know a way / workaround to make headers repeat if the table spans multiple pages in Safari?

  I want to do a search across 2 tables that have a many-to-one relationship, eg class User << ActiveRecord::Base has_many :pets end class Pet << ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :users end Now let's say I have some data like so users id name 1 Bob 2 Joe 3 Brian pets id user_id animal 1 1 cat 2 1 dog 3 2 cat 4 3 dog What I want to do is create an active record query that will return a user that has both a cat and a dog (i.e. user 1 - Bob). My attempt at this so far is User.joins(:pets).where('pets.animal = ? AND pets.animal = ?','dog','cat') Now I understand why this doesn't work - it's looking for a pet that is both a dog and a cat so returns nothing. I don't know how to modify this to give me the answer I want however. Does anyone have any suggestions? This seems like it should be easy - it doesn't seem like an especially unusual situation.

• Linking two models in a multi-model form

  Hey Guys, I have a nested multimodel form right now, using Users and Profiles. Users has_one profile, and Profile belongs_to Users. When the form is submitted, a new user is created, and a new profile is created, but they are not linked (this is the first obvious issue). The user's model has a profile_id row, and the profile's model has a user_id row. • MySQL query : all records of one table plus count of another table

  Hello Guys! I have 2 tables: User and Picture. The Picture table has the key of the user. So basically each user can have multiple pictures, and each picture belongs to one user. Now, I am trying to make the following query: I want to select all the user info plus the total number of pictures that he has (even if it's 0). How can I do that? Probably it sounds quite simple, but I am trying and trying and can't seem to find the right query. The only thing I could select is this info, but only for users that have at least 1 picture, meaning that the Pictures table has at least one record for that key... But I also wanna consider the users that don't have any. Any idea? Thanks!

• How to feed an xml database with tags obtained thru html forms ?

  Hello! Not a programmer, I begin with xml, html forms and xslt on Mac. I plan to use a form to post short texts in a xhtml page and invite end users to add some annotations to the said text. The users would select a specific part of the text posted and each annotation would stand for one specific chain of characters. My goal is to consolidate the tags obtained from various user's annotations to one xml "knowledge base" containing the original text with all the revision indicators. Then I plan to use xslt sheets to product various reports based on the tags obtained. my two questions are : 1- am I dreaming ? Is it really possible to do that with xml, xforms, xslt without using java, php, ajax or other seasoned programmer's tools ? 2- What should be my focus for further explorations aiming in that direction ? • Really lost with OpenID and ASP.NET MVC

  I'm attempting to implement OpenID with ASP.NET MVC (Yeah, we haven't heard that one before I'm sure!) That really isn't the big problem, though. My huge problem is that I am exceedingly confused about how to do this alongside an application that will need to store a lot of information about the logged in users (profiles, histories, etc) It seems to me that OpenID takes away the site-centric logic and makes it, well, open. This is all well and good if you just make an authentication ticket to be seen as a 'validated' user - but in all seriousness I am completely lost. Is it possible to implement OpenID such that logging in with it will allow users to 'exist' on my own application as if they had gone through normal registration?

  Hi I want to mass create some users and I want to set the users timezone automatically. However I am using timezones generated by this Dictionary<string, TimeZoneInfo> storeZoneName = TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones().ToDictionary(z => z.DisplayName); So I need the names to be exactly like the ones this list returns. So can I put like a constraint on that xml node that the name has to exactly match one of the names. So I am guessing I will need to write this list somewhere in the file and that's what I am not sure if you can do something like that in a schema.

  I have a User class that has a String username in it. I have a list of users that I'm trying to display in a table using <s:iterator value="users" id="list"> <tr> <td><s:property value="#list.username" /></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> </tr> </s:iterator> The rows are being displayed the right number of times, so it's iterating through my list properly. However, I don't know how to access the username property to display it. Obviously what I have above isn't correct... Any ideas?

  In my rails app I have a search bar where users can search other users. Currently when a User submits the search from, they're redirected to a "results" page. I want to load those results in a div on the same page..   1)A user can have many causes and a cause can belong to many users. 2)A user can have many campaigns and campaigns can belong to many users. Campaigns belong to one cause. I want to be able to assign causes or campaigns to a given user, individually. So a user can be assigned a specific campaign. OR a user could be assigned a cause and all of the campaigns of that cause should then be associated with a user. Is that possible? And could I set it up so that the relationships could be simplified like so: User.causes = all causes that belong to a user User.campaigns = all campaigns that belong to user whether through a cause association or campaign association

However, not all of the end users have Crystal Reports installed on their computers. These users are receiving the following error... "Unable to install or run the application. The application requires that assembly CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.XmlSerialize Version 10.5.3700.0 be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first."   Based on my Google and stackoverflow search I'm guessing no, but it can't hurt to ask. The goal is: store some blank forms on my server. Then present these to the user, who edits the form in the browser with Javascript and submits the form back to the server. The client wants to reuse parts of an old system (the forms) in which users would download an editable PDF, edit it, and email it back to a secretary. Our users aren't very computer savvy and many don't realize they need to email the forms back, assuming instead the forms somehow get submitted when they save their local changes (or something). I haven't seen the forms yet, so I cannot assess the viability of an alternative.

  Greetings, Because textarea elements do not resize with jquery.touch ( http://plugins.jquery.com/project/touch ), I've put an textarea in a table where the first row allows the user to drag the table around and resize it with the textarea growing/shrinking/moving along. It works well, except that users dont seem to 'get' that they can use the bar to resize/move. I was trying to find some 'grip bar' graphics but google isnt helping me. What is the best way to show users that an element can be moved/resized ? Pointer to graphics ( generators ) would be great. Or, does any one know how to make textarea's movable/resizable ? T.
