  • Cheap programmable, portable device

    Since a long time I have thrived for being able to program something I can take with me - a very small computer like a programmable calculator, gameboy, pocket PC or cellphone. However, I didn't find anything fitting yet! The thing I'm looking at is the price, because I can't afford to spend too much money on it. What are some cheap portable programmable devices? All I'd need is support for uploading assembler code from my computer. I don't care about the display, a simple LCD would be sufficient. Same goes for the buttons I have looked at programmable calculators, portable gaming consoles such as the PSP and more, however didn't find anything that fit :(

    I am reading documentation about my CMS and it states that an HTML page <title> tag is really important in SEO. It states that the Google Spider gives the most relevance to the first 68 characters of a site title. (68 characters being the number of characters that Google will display in it's search engine result pages,) Can anyone verify this is still true? I read in The Information Diet that content farms were getting too good at gaming Google's algorithm for collecting and posting SERPs and so google had to change the search algorithm.

  • How do I get Unity working again after installing the wrong video driver?

    First off I did something stupid. I downloaded a Nvidia driver even though I have an integrated chipset. After installation my unity was still working. However, when I restarted my computer I got an error message saying that I can't run unity. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver. I restarted my computer. Unity still does not work. In the terminal I type "unity" and everything looks okay until I get three error messages that say this: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". followed by: Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: glXCreateContext failed Compiz (bailer) - Info: Ensuring a shell for your session jesse@jesse-PC:~$ Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.

  • Issue with CSS font color in Webkit in Lion (#444 looks darker than #333)

    I have a strange issue with Safari and Chrome Mac (19.0.1084.54) in OS X Lion. Here it is, very simply put: When I display it in a Webkit browser, text set in Helvetica Neue and color Hex #444 looks a little bolder, and therefore darker, than the same text with an Hex color value of #333. This does not happen at all in Snow Leopard with the exact same browsers (same version). Happens on any website I tried, so I know it's not something related to the CSS of my website. I tried to change it live through the Inspector and it really shows up.   • ubuntu integrated graphics suspend + hybrid graphics

    My laptop uses a hybrid graphics hardware. Using the vgaswitcheroo I am able to power off either card and switch between them correctly. The issue is that the system wakes up/resumes from suspend correctly only when using the discrete graphics, or atleast the discrete graphics must be powered on even if the display is connected to the onboard intel card. Has anyone faced this issues? Is there any workaround? I only want to use the integrated card and not the discrete amd card. System Info Intel HD 3000 ATI mobility radeon HD 7600M Ubuntu 12.10

    Hello I am looking for a way to get bank account information (transactions and balance) from a financial institution and display it on a website. The question is vague intentionally.... Everything is open. I haven't chosen a bank, serverside technology or front end technology. The idea is to have a script run automatically periodically (once or twice a day) and get the latest account information from the bank server automatically. Probably something in the direction of OFX (Open financial exchange), HBCI (home banking c.. interface), fnts or something like it. Even working over a closed source API is not out of question: Wesabe or Mint or something.   • Introducing jLight &ndash; Talking to the DOM using Silverlight and jQuery.

    Introduction With the recent news about Silverlight on the Windows Phone and all the great Out-Of-Browser features in the upcoming Silverlight 4 you almost forget Silverlight is a browser plugin. It most often runs in a web browser and often as a control. In many cases you need to communicate with the browser to get information about textboxes, events or details about the browser itself. To do this you can use JavaScript from Silverlight. Although Silverlight works the same on every browser, JavaScript does not and it won’t be long before problems arise. To overcome differences in browser I like to use jQuery. The only downside of doing this is that there’s a lot more code needed that you would normally use when you write jQuery in JavaScript. Lately, I had to catch changes is the browser scrollbar and act to the new position. I also had to move the scrollbar when the user dragged around in the Silverlight application. With jQuery it was peanuts to get and set the right attributes, but I found that I had to write a lot of code on Silverlight side.  With a few refactoring I had a separated out the plumbing into a new class and could call only a few methods on that to get the same thing done. The idea for jLight was born. jLight vs. jQuery The main purpose of jLight is to take the ease of use of jQuery and bring it into Silverlight for handling DOM interaction. For example, to change the text color of a DIV to red, in jQuery you would write: jQuery("div").css("color","red"); In jLight the same thing looks like so: jQuery.Select("div").Css("color","red");   Another example. To change the offset in of the last SPAN you could write this in jQuery : jQuery("span:last").offset({left : 10, top : 100});   In jLight this would do the same: jQuery.Select("span:last").Offset(new {left = 10, top = 100 });   Callbacks Nothing too special so far. To get the same thing done using the “normal” HtmlPage.Window.Eval, it wouldn’t require too much effort. But to wire up a handler for events from the browser it’s a whole different story. Normally you need to register ScriptMembers, ScriptableTypes or write some code in JavaScript. jLight takes care of the plumbing and provide you with an simple interface in the same way jQuery would. If you would like to handle the scroll event of the BODY of your html page, you’ll have to bind the event using jQuery and have a function call back to a registered function in Silverlight. In the example below I assume there’s a method “SomeMethod” and it is registered as a ScriptableObject as “RegisteredFromSilverlight” from Silverlight.   jQuery("body:first").scroll(function() { var sl = document.getElementbyId("SilverlightControl"); sl.content.RegisteredFromSilverlight.SomeMethod($(this)); });       Using jLight  in Silverlight the code would be even simpler. The registration of RegisteredFromSilverlight  as ScriptableObject can be omitted.  Besides that, you don’t have to write any JavaScript or evaluate strings with JavaScript.   jQuery.Select("body:first").scroll(SomeMethod);   Lambdas Using a lambda in Silverlight can make it even simpler.  Each is the jQuery equivalent of foreach in C#. It calls a function for every element found by jQuery. In this example all INPUT elements of the text type are selected. The FromObject method is used to create a jQueryObject from an object containing a ScriptObject. The Val method from jQuery is used to get the value of the INPUT elements.   jQuery.Select("input:text").Each((element, index) => { textBox1.Text += jQueryObject.FromObject(element).Val(); return null; });   Ajax One thing jQuery is often used for is making Ajax calls. Making calls to services to external services can be done from Silverlight, but as easy as using jQuery. As an example I would like to show how jLight does this. Below is the entire code behind. It searches my name on twitter and shows the result. This example can be found in the source of the project. The GetJson method passes a Silverlight JsonValue to a callback.   • Firefox ignore GTK theme for localhost stuff

    I know this is pretty much a duplicate of How can one make firefox ignore my GTK theme entirely?, but the answers on that one are no permanent solution. It works by launching firefox from the terminal. I would like to know a solution that works for every instance of firefox no matter how it was created. There is the possibility to edit the userContent.css file, but the settings you make randomly do not apply to some sites or in some situations, strangely, even with the !important added... I have a dark GTK theme and this results in some textboxes having a black background with black text with a userContent.css that has input, textarea { color: black !important; background-color: white !important; } Update I changed a setting in about:config from true to false, namely browser.display.use_system_colors. Everything appears normal and well now, for one exception: everything that runs on localhost. This includes PHPMyAdmin and a website I am making. I would like to know if there is a solution to this.

The two questions I have on this are: What happens when it is unable to call that function every 1/60 of a second? Is this a way of processing events that need to be limited by time (ex: a ball which needs to travel to the right of the screen from the left in X seconds)? Or should it be done a different way?

    I have code in OpenGL that uses glReadPixels to copy the depth buffer to a CPU memory buffer: glReadPixels(0, 0, w, h, GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT, GL_FLOAT, dbuf); How do I achieve the same in DirectX? I have looked at a similar question which gives the solution to copy the RGB buffer.     The way I plan to use it is: Have people send SMS to a number to vote. On the backend (assuming that the data comes back to my Web server), I will display the voting results on my Web site. After say 10 minutes, I would like to press a button on my Web site so ONE of the people who sent an SMS earlier receive an SMS saying that person is a winner. I'm an ASP .Net developer, so I just need an API to code against. One such company I saw that does this (but is limited to US) is: http://www.twilio.com/sms/ Do you know any international providers that are similar to Twilio SMS? I'm based in Sydney, Australia.   • Microsoft releases Bing iPhone app

    As its officials have been hinting and promising for a while now, Microsoft announced it has developed a version of its Bing search app for the iPhone. The new Bing app is available on the iPhone app store as of tonight (December 15). Microsoft already offers Bing on a number of mobile phones, and has a five-year deal with Verizon to provide Bing on a number of phones available to Verizon Wireless customers. A mobile version of Bing already is available for Windows Mobile, Blackberry, BREW and Sidekick devices on Verizon. In other Bing news, Microsoft has finally hit the 10 percent market share mark with Bing, according to the November U.S. search share data from comScore.   • Problems with opening CHM Help files from Network or Internet

    As a publisher of a Help Creation tool called Html Help Help Builder, I’ve seen a lot of problems with help files that won't properly display actual topic content and displays an error message for topics instead. Here’s the scenario: You go ahead and happily build your fancy, schmanzy Help File for your application and deploy it to your customer. Or alternately you've created a help file and you let your customers download them off the Internet directly or in a zip file. The customer downloads the file, opens the zip file and copies the help file contained in the zip file to disk. She then opens the help file and finds the following unfortunate result:     The help file  comes up with all topics in the tree on the left, but a Navigation to the WebPage was cancelled or Operation Aborted error in the Help Viewer's content window whenever you try to open a topic. The CHM file obviously opened since the topic list is there, but the Help Viewer refuses to display the content. Looks like a broken help file, right? But it's not - it's merely a Windows security 'feature' that tries to be overly helpful in protecting you. The reason this happens is because files downloaded off the Internet - including ZIP files and CHM files contained in those zip files - are marked as as coming from the Internet and so can potentially be malicious, so do not get browsing rights on the local machine – they can’t access local Web content, which is exactly what help topics are. If you look at the URL of a help topic you see something like this:   mk:@MSITStore:C:\wwapps\wwIPStuff\wwipstuff.chm::/indexpage.htm which points at a special Microsoft Url Moniker that in turn points the CHM file and a relative path within that HTML help file. Try pasting a URL like this into Internet Explorer and you'll see the help topic pop up in your browser (along with a warning most likely). Although the URL looks weird this still equates to a call to the local computer zone, the same as if you had navigated to a local file in IE which by default is not allowed.  Unfortunately, unlike Internet Explorer where you have the option of clicking a security toolbar, the CHM viewer simply refuses to load the page and you get an error page as shown above. How to Fix This - Unblock the Help File There's a workaround that lets you explicitly 'unblock' a CHM help file. To do this: Open Windows Explorer Find your CHM file Right click and select Properties Click the Unblock button on the General tab Here's what the dialog looks like:   Clicking the Unblock button basically, tells Windows that you approve this Help File and allows topics to be viewed.   Is this insecure? Not unless you're running a really old Version of Windows (XP pre-SP1). In recent versions of Windows Internet Explorer pops up various security dialogs or fires script errors when potentially malicious operations are accessed (like loading Active Controls), so it's relatively safe to run local content in the CHM viewer. Since most help files don't contain script or only load script that runs pure JavaScript access web resources this works fine without issues. How to avoid this Problem As an application developer there's a simple solution around this problem: Always install your Help Files with an Installer. The above security warning pop up because Windows can't validate the source of the CHM file. However, if the help file is installed as part of an installation the installation and all files associated with that installation including the help file are trusted. A fully installed Help File of an application works just fine because it is trusted by Windows. Summary It's annoying as all hell that this sort of obtrusive marking is necessary, but it's admittedly a necessary evil because of Microsoft's use of the insecure Internet Explorer engine that drives the CHM Html Engine's topic viewer.   • Alternative ways to make a battle system in a mobile indie game more fun and engaging

    I'm developing an indie game for mobile platforms, and part of the game involves a PvP battle system (where the target player is passive). My vision is simple: the active player can select a weapon/item, then attack/use, and display the calculated outcome. I have a concept for battle modifiers that affect stats to make it more interesting, but I'm not convinced this by itself will add enough of a fun factor. I've received some inspiration from the game engine that powers Modern War/Kingdom Age/Crime City, but I want more control to make it more fun. In those games, you don't have the option to select weapons or use items, and the "battling" screen is simply 3D eye candy. Since this will be an indie game, I won't be spending $$$ on a team of professional 3D artists/animators, so my edge needs to be different. What are some alternatives to expensive eye candy that you or others have used to make a non-3D PvP game more fun and engaging? Did the alternative concepts survive the release?

  • Bash script not working as required with xbindkeys

    I made a simple bash script to display a notification whenever my capslock key is pressed. It works fine when I call it like bash capsnotify.sh. The problem now is when I bind my above script to capslock key using xbindkeys tool it doesn't work as required.   • Renderbuffer to GLSL shader?

    I have a software that performs volume rendering through a raycasting approach. The actual raycasting shader writes the raycasted volume depth into a framebuffer object, through gl_FragDepth, that I bind before calling the shader. The problem I have is that I would like to use this depth in another shader that I call later on. I figured out that the only way to do that is to bind the framebuffer once the raycasting has finished, read the depthmap through something like glReadPixels(0, 0, m_winSize.x , m_winSize.y, GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT, GL_FLOAT, pixels); and write it to a 2D texture as usual glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT24, m_winSize.x, m_winSize.y, 0, GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT, GL_FLOAT, pixels) and then pass this 2D texture that contains a simple depth map to the other shader. However, I am not entirely sure that what I do is the proper way to do this. Is there anyway to pass the framebuffer that I fill up in my raycasting shader to the other shader?

  • Best C# database communication technique

    A few days ago I read a reply to a question where people said that the days of writing queries within your c# code are long gone. I'm not sure what the specific person meant with the comment but it got me thinking. At the company I'm currently working at we maintain an assembly containing all the queries to the database (let's call it Queries), this assembly is reference by a QueryService (Retrieve the correct queries) assembly which in turn is referenced by a UnitOfWork assembly (The database connector classes, we have different connector classes for SQL, MySQL etc.). We use these three assemblies to perform operations on our database and all queries/commands are written in our C# code. Is there a better way to communicate with the database and is there a better way to communicate with different database types?
