  • How much should the AppDelegate do?

    I'm designing quite a large App and on startup it will create sessions with a few different servers. As they are creating a session which is used across all parts of the app its something I thought would be best in App Delegate. But the problem is I need the session progress to be represented on the screen. I plan to have a UIToolBar at the bottom of the main menu which I don't want to cover with the progress bar but cover the UIView above it.So the way I see it I could do it a few different ways. 1) Have the App Delegate establish the sessions and report the progress to the main menu class so it can represent it in the progress bar (will I have any issues doing this if the sessions are created in a separate thread?), 2) have the App delegate display the main menu (UIView with a bunch of buttons and UIToolBar) and have it track and display the progress (I have never displayed anything in the App Delegate but assume you can do this but its not recommended) or 3) have the App Delegate just push the main menu and have the mainMenu class create the sessions and display the progress bar. 4) I think the other way to do it is to create the sessions in a delegate class and have the delegate set to mainMenu rather than self (AppDelegate), although I've never used anything other then self so not sure if this will work or if I will be able to close the thread (through calling super maybe?) as its running in the AppDelegate rather than the delegate of the class. As I've kinda said before the sessions are being created in a class in a separate thread so it wont lock the UI and I think the best way is the first but am I going to have issues having it running in a separate thread, reporting back to the app delegate and then sending that message to the mainMenu view? I hope that all makes sense, let me know if you need any further clarification. Any information is appreciated Cheers,

  • TableView - iVar reset when returning from details view

    Hi, anyone knows what I need to do to retain my TableView iVars whilst pushing a details view onto the navigation stack? I have an array and a date defined as iVars and the array is retained, whilst the date is not. I checked whether there may be an autorelease hidden somewhere but there are no obvious ones. The properties are defined as nonatomic, retain. I use custom NSDate category methods to determine specific dates at stages. These use NSDateComponents, NSRange and NSCalendar, for example: - (NSDate *)lastDayOfMonth: { NSCalendar *tmpCal = [NSCalendar currentCalendar]; NSDateComponents *tmpDateComponents = [tmpCal components:NSYearCalendarUnit | NSMonthCalendarUnit | NSEraCalendarUnit | NSWeekCalendarUnit | NSWeekdayOrdinalCalendarUnit fromDate:self]; NSRange tmpRange = [tmpCal rangeOfUnit:NSDayCalendarUnit inUnit:NSMonthCalendarUnit forDate:[tmpCal dateFromComponents:tmpDateComponents]]; [tmpDateComponents setDay:tmpRange.length]; [tmpDateComponents setHour:23]; [tmpDateComponents setMinute:59]; [tmpDateComponents setSecond:59]; return [[NSCalendar currentCalendar] dateFromComponents:tmpDateComponents]; } could they somehow be the reason?

  • Why aren't my objects sorting with sortedArrayUsingDescriptors?

    I expected the code below to return the objects in imageSet as a sorted array. Instead, there's no difference in the ordering before and after. NSSortDescriptor *descriptor = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"imageID" ascending:YES]; NSSet *imageSet = collection.images; for (CBImage *image in imageSet) { NSLog(@"imageID in Set: %@",image.imageID); } NSArray *imageArray = [[imageSet allObjects] sortedArrayUsingDescriptors:(descriptor, nil)]; [descriptor release]; for (CBImage *image in imageArray) { NSLog(@"imageID in Array: %@",image.imageID); } Fwiw, CBImage is defined in my core data model. I don't know why sorting on managed objects would work any differently than on "regular" objects, but maybe it matters.   • Memory Leaks when touching UITableViewCells and poping off view.

    Hi All, I'm currently having a problem where the leaks tool is reporting a slew of memory leaks after clicking on cells within a UITableView and then hitting the back button and popping off the view.   • plist vs static array

    Generally, I use static arrays and dictionaries for containing lookup tables in my classes. However, with the number of classes creeping quickly into the hundreds, I'm hesitant to continue using this pattern. Even if these static collections are initialized lazily, I've essentially got a bounded memory leak going on as someone uses my app. Most of these are arrays of strings so I can convert strings into NSInteger constants that can be used with switch statements, etc. I could just recreate the array/dictionary on every call, but many of these functions are used heavily and/or in tight loops. So I'm trying to come up with a pattern that is both performant and not persistent. If I store the information in a plist, does the iphoneOS do anything intelligent about caching those when loaded? Do you have another method that might be related?

  • UIView Obscuring Other Views

    I cannot figure out what is obscuring my buttons. The first image shows the buttons that I want to click. They are clickable while the view is contracted like this, but when the view is expanded like in the second image, the buttons are no longer clickable. There seems to be another view obscuring the buttons. Any thoughts on what might be causing that? If not, any idea how I can figure out what view is getting the tap events when I tap in that area?   • "Don't Allow" in LocationManager keeps logging errors

    I have an app that checked for location. It asks the user to use location and if the user says no on the menu there is an issue when i load the mapview. Once i select the mapView it asks for the user location again. If the user says no again my console keeps displaying errors/warning as well as my NSLog from the "didFailWithError" of my location Manager class. Is there a way of stopping the LocationManage:didFailWithErrors if the user has already said no?     Hey guys. I'm using Dave DeLong's CHCSVParser to parse a csv. I can parse the csv locally, but I cannot get it load a remote csv file. I have been staring at my MacBook way too long today and the answer is right in front of me. I was using the technique of lazy image loading from apple examples . when I was used the class in my application it gave me topic to learn but don't what was actually happening there .   • Problem with TTWebController… alternative view controller template for UIWebView?

    I have a UIWebView with content populated from a Last.fm API call. This content contains links, many of which are handled by parsing info from the URL in: - (BOOL)webView:(UIWebView *)aWbView shouldStartLoadWithRequest:(NSURLRequest *)request navigationType:(UIWebViewNavigationType)navigationType; …and passing that info on to appropraite view controllers. When I cannot handle a URL I would like to push a new view controller on the stack and load the webpage into a UIWebView there. The TTWebController in Three20 looks very promising since it has also implemented a navigation toolbar, loading indicators etc. Somewhat naively perhaps I thought I would be able to use this controller to display web content in my app, without implementing Three20 throughout the app. I followed the instructions on github to add Three20 to my project and added the following code to deal with URLs in shouldStartLoadWithRequest: TTWebController* browser = [[TTWebController alloc]init]; [browser openURL:@"http://three20.info"]; //initially test with this URL [self.navigationController pushViewController:navigator animated:YES]; This crashes my app however with the following notice: *** -[TTNavigator setParentViewController:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3d5db70 What else do I need to do to implement the TTWebController in my app? Or do you know of an alternative view controller template that I can use instead of the Three20 implementation?

    I have a really weird problem with UIImageView. I have an image (an RGB png) 45x45 pixels which I add to the view. I can see that image is blurred after added to the view.   • UIWebview does not show up into UINavigationController

    Hi I have a tabBar application. In the first tab, I have a navigation bar. In this navigation bar I have a table view. When the user clicks a cell of the table, it goes to another table view, and when the user clicks a cell in that table, it goes to a webview to open a web page. Basically, it goes fine until opening the webview. In the webview, viewDidLoad is called and seems to work properly. However, webViewDidStartLoad is never called and the web page never shows up. I am not using IB. I build the UITabBarController in the AppDelegate, where I also assign an instance of my UINavigationController for each tab. I call the webview from the second UITableViewController as follows: rssWebViewController = [[webViews objectAtIndex: indexPath.row] objectForKey:@"controller"]; [[self navigationController] pushViewController:rssWebViewController animated:YES]; I have checked that the navigationController is there and it seems just fine.   • Prevent status bar from receiving touch events

    Edit After further testing, it appears that the part of my button that are not clickable are where the status bar used to be. I'm hiding the status bar with : // -- Override point for customization after app launch [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setStatusBarHidden:YES]; But it's still receiving touches. Any idea on how to disable this? Is there's a bounding box on an application that receives touch events? I created a few sample round rect buttons and placed them in different places in my view. The ones in the center of the view receive touch events (and show the highlighted blue color) but if I place a button near the edges of the view, only parts of them are clickable in the simulator. Is this because of Apples style guidelines? I placed a button exactly where a UITabNavigationItem would appear and only the bottom half of it is clickable.
