• Growing your VirtualBox Virtual Disk

  Don't you just hate it when this happens: Fortunately, if you're running inside VirtualBox, you can resize your virtual disk and magically make your guest have a bigger disk very easily. There are 2 steps to doing this... 1. Resize the virtual disk Use the VBoxManage command line tool to extend the size of the Virtual Disk, specifying the path to the disk and the size in MB: VBoxManage modifyhd <uuid>|<filename> [--type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable| readonly|multiattach] [--autoreset on|off] [--compact] [--resize <megabytes>|--resizebyte <bytes>]   If you booted up your guest at this point, the extra space is seen as an unformatted area on the disk, like this: So we now need to tell the guest about the extra space available. 2. Extend the guest's partition to use the extra space How you do this step depends on you guest OS type and the tools you have available. Linux guests often include the excellent gparted partition editor, whereas Windows 7 and 8 provide the Computer Management tool which can resize partitions. Unfortunately, my Windows XP vm has no such tool. But I do have a couple of other options: Most Linux installable .isos include the aforementioned gparted tool, so I could simply attach, say, an Ubuntu.iso as a Virtual CD/DVD in my Windows XP vm and boot off that. Then use gparted to extend the Windows XP partition, before finally rebooting. But I took another route and attached my resized virtual disk to a Windows Server 2012 vm I had lying around. Then I used the Computer Management tool in Windows Server 2012 to extend the partition of the Windows XP disk, before shutting down, unplugging the disk and reattaching to my Windows XP vm. (Note that if your vm's use different disk controllers, Windows will check the disks on booting). When I finally boot up my Windows XP guest I see the available disk space and all is well.   I am running COMSOL (a scientific software) as a server, to which MATLAB is connected to. After a while, COMSOL aborted with the following error message. • Files apperaring/disappering from folder on share

  Windows Server 2008 R2 I have a folder H:\temp\folderName where H: is a file share under ADS on the server. I have "Full Control" permission on the folder. I can open the folder and see a file and/or a folder that is supposed there. If I try to drag/drop or Copy/Paste the file I get an error "Could not find this item. This is no longer in ...." But I can still see the file. Similar issue occur at command prompt. I cannot delete the folder. Delete actions run w/o error but the folder is still present. I was able to rename the folder. My guess is there are some cross link issues. Or? Does anyone recognize this syndrome? What is the proper next step to verify the file share?

• How to remove GRUB from dual boot (Debian and Windows XP)

  I have a computer witch cannot be boot from CD or USB. I have Debian and Windows XP with dual boot via GRUB. Now I want to uninstall Debian and GRUB and restore the Windows MBR. I can enter boot Debian and Windows OSes, but no boot from CD or USB for recovery. How can I remove GRUb and restore MBR from within Windows XP or Debian? NOTE: I asked this question before, but after accepting the answer, I found that Windows XP does not have fdisk command. However, I think it is too late to continue the discussion there; thus, I asked this brand new question.

• nagios service check

  I am new to nagios and we have a small issue I need to ask assistance with. Many of the machines that we monitor can go unresponsive for a bit when some very intensive cpu tasks are run. This makes nagios send warnings and alerts while these hosts are busy reporting things like 'ping timeout' or 'zombie processes' and even swap space warnings, but in actuality there is not a problem. Is there a way to configure nagios to not send such alerts, but check x number of times over a period of time and only then send an alert at the end of that time if the server in question has not recovered?. Looking at the commands.cfg file, I see entries like this: define command{ command_name check_local_swap command_line $USER1$/check_swap -w $ARG1$ -c $ARG2$ } How could I modify this example to accomplish what I want above. • How do I simplify my URLs with Apache (or DNS)?

  I'm running Apache 2.2 with WHM / cPanel. Let me know what other info you need to answer this question. I want to set up some kind of forwarding/redirect so that the following occurs: _http://appname.mydomain.com/ (ignore the underscore, couldn't post actual links) actually sends you to _http://mydomain.com:8072/appname/ This can be overt (your browser address bar changes) or not, it doesn't really matter (although if I get to pick I would prefer the address bar NOT change). My initial thought was to use a CNAME, but I've since learned you can't include a port in your cname. Now I'm thinking I have to do something with my Apache VHOST? I am very much a novice at apache / web server internal workings, but I know my way around a command line well enough.

  How do I check if a LUN has been presented to my server ? What are the Linux commands for that ? Do the LUNS show up in a fdisk -l command like a normal /dev/sda gets listed ? What are other commands assosicaed with general SAN related checks in Linux ? What is WWN and how does that have any relevance and Also please explain multipathing why if we have LUN's , what is the use of multipathing then ? Bit lenghty but I am not able to get a grasp on the topic . Any help would be appreciated .

• Change Google Chrome’s Process model?

  See here: http://imgur.com/lKffI.png Does anyone know how to stop Chrome doing this? Chrome seems to group all tabs I open through the same page into one process. If I copy and paste the links individually into separate tabs, it creates new processes, but when I just middle click links, it groups them into one. I want to force Chrome to create a new process for every tab because when one page locks up, it freezes pretty much all the tabs I have open and if one of the tabs crashes, it takes the rest with it. You can apparently alter Chrome's process model to one called "--process-per-tab" which seems to be what I'm looking for, but when I try and open Chrome with this argument via the terminal, it doesn't work. It's likely I'm not using the correct command; what I tried was: /Applications/"Google Chrome.app"/Contents/MacOS/"Google Chrome" --process-per-tab I'm on OSX and using the latest dev build 5.0.396.0.

• anoymous access and automatic mounting of a samba share from a windows system to a linux system

  I have most of my audio files on a system shared by most of the people in my family, and i'd like to be able to get them accessable to a headless linux box i control over smb. The share(s) in question are not on a share that requires authentication (and most examples assume so), and i'd like to have them automatically mounted, and accessable on boot. I'd like to only use command line tools - so anything that has x dependancies is out, and shares should be accessable to any user on the system via a mount point OS shouldn't matter, but the "fileserver" is a windows XP system, and i can access the shares without logging in, and the client is a ubuntu 10.04 lts system with a minimal CLI install.

• SCCM - How to make new deployed applications appear in Software Center faster?

  I am trying to make the process between SCCM deployments and the Software Center (configmgr) faster, if not seamless. Right now, applications generally take about 1-2 hours to populate properly. However, by going to the "Configuration Manager" under the Windows Control Panel, there is an "Actions" tab. Generally 5 minutes after running these "Actions", the software will populate inside the Software Center. The downside of this is the user interaction with the "Actions" pane...I can't have a user going through this process when they request a new application that needs to be deployed through SCCM. I have have played around with using "net stop ccmexec" and "net start ccmexec" to manually run all of these "Actions" on the start command, but it feels a bit archaic. Does anyone have any suggestions how to speed this process up? I feel there is something simple I am missing.

• Laptop HDD not mounting.

  I have a laptop with broken (shorted out) motherboard and a 640 GB HDD. I want to recover my data from the hard disk. Every time I connect the hard disk using an external casing, it is being detected in the disk management service but not visible in my computer, nor accessible through command prompt. The Hard Disk is functioning as I can feel the hard disk rotor working properly when connected using the casing. Also the LED on the hard disk is blinking, the data is there but i am unable to access the data. Someone please suggest me ways of using the hard-disk as a slave disk using casing.

I've got it worked out logically, but my Command Feed is sending me an error message for the print statement. • After software update, why is webmin showing wrong mySQL version?

  I did a full OS/package update on a server running webmin. Now when I go into webmin, it's showing the correct new version of Ubuntu, Apache, etc...but it's still showing the old version of mySQL. At the command line, if I enter mysql -v, it shows the correct new one, but it's just not getting recognized in webmin. I found a file at /etc/webmin/mysql called "version", and it's just a text file with the version number in it. So theoretically I could just change this and it would be fine. However, this obviously doesn't seem like how this should go. How should this file normally get updated? ETA: Services have all been restarted (in fact, there's been a full reboot). Sorry for not specifying this...it just seemed like the obvious first thing to do and not worth mentioning. :-)

I changed the timezone from the php configuration on webmin, but the database function NOW() is still using the default timezone. How can I change the database timezone? PS: I run mysql command to change timezone on webmin, but it gave me the error: Failed to execute SQL : SQL SET time_zone = 'America/New_York'; failed : Unknown or incorrect time zone: 'America/New_York'

• How to run script from root as another user (with user PATH)

  I would like to have these commands run as the ss user from root mkdir bin cp -r /opt/gitolite . gitolite/install -ln gitolite setup -pk ss.pub mkdir -p .gitolite/hooks/common ln -s /opt/pre-receive .gitolite/hooks/common/ so everything is executed in /home/ss. The 4th line requires $HOME/bin as you can see from the 3rd line. The only way I can get it to work is by adding su -c "command" ss to each line, which is not a nice hack. This is an extension to my previous question, where I wasn't precise enough. Question How do I run all these commands as a script in a practical way?

• Special filename in OS X; semantics of asterisk?

  So I'm using Mac OS X 10.5, and I have a file called _Mail.grxml that is being handled funny. ls -l will show the file, but ls -l * will not. It's just this one file; note ls -l | wc -l gives 43 (the number of files in the directory), but ls -l * | wc -l gives 42. So the question is -- Are there filenames that OSX just doesn't play nicely with? Or are the semantics of the * on the command line different from what I expect? (Note this is NOT the only file whose name begins with an underscore; the other files are picked up just fine by *).

• Transient mysqlcheck errors about "size of datafile" (file too small)

  Running mysqlcheck on a live database is giving me transient errors like this one: mydatabase.mytable error : Size of datafile is: 500719688 Should be: 501000484 error : Corrupt When I run the command again or check the table one-off using mysql, it's listed as OK. Is this just a side effect of running checks on live tables? Is it possible that data is not flushed, hence the strange discrepancy? We moved several databases this morning by shutting down mysqld on the source and rsyncing files across to the new server, but these are all MyISAM tables so I don't believe the two things are related. (But I mention it just in case.)

  I am trying to setup GitHub on my server and gotten to the point where I am running the command "git push -u origin master". However, a large file was detected and the following error was received: remote: error: GH001: Large files detected. remote: error: Trace: 5520a70fd2eeaa2eafd7de049a590fb5 remote: error: See http://git.io/iEPt8g for more information. remote: error: File app/logs/dev.log is 2041.59 MB; this exceeds GitHub's file size limit of 100 MB I ended up deleting that file and tried adding the git again but I keep running into that error. Any ideas on how to work around this?

• MySql in Bash: Show only errors

  Let me first start off by saying I am not an experienced linux user. I am trying to debug a mysql script in linux, however, my issue is that most of the queries are successful so I can not see the error messages because they scroll off the screen. I am executing the queries from a large file using the \. command. I was wondering if there was a way to show ONLY the error messages when I exececute the sql file. Right now it is showing both error messages and Query OK,.... I don't really care about the queries that are ok, just the errors. Thanks!

• Server not repsonding after Ubuntu upgrade

  I have a server that was running Ubuntu 8.04. I upgraded Ubuntu via the command-line and got no warning messages. After it was done the server restarted but now I am unable to SSH back in. My site is also not resolving. My guess is I overwrote something important. What are some trouble-shooting steps I can take? I am able to execute commands through my VPS provider's admin interface. I'm not sure what version it upgraded me to honestly.

  Hi, I would like to not show the name of each chapter on the header of its each page. I also like to have nothing in the headers for abstract, acknowledgement, table of content, list of figures and list of tables. • Silverlight 4 + MVVM + KeyDown event

  I'm trying to build a sample game in Silverlight 4 using the MVVM design pattern to broaden my knowledge. I'm using Laurent Bugnion's MvvmLight toolkit as well (found here: http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/ ). All I want to do right now is move a shape around within a Canvas by pressing specific keys. My solution contains a Player.xaml (just a rectangle; this will be moved around) and MainPage.xaml (the Canvas and an instance of the Player control). To my understanding, Silverlight doesn't support tunneling routed events, only bubbling. My big problem is that Player.xaml never recognizes the KeyDown event. It's always intercepted by MainPage.xaml first and it never reaches any child controls because it bubbles upward. I'd prefer that the logic to move the Player be in the PlayerViewModel class, but I don't think the Player can know about any KeyDown events firing without me explicitly passing them on down from the MainPage. I ended up adding the handler logic to the MainPageViewModel class. Now my problem is that the MainPageViewModel has no knowledge of Player.xaml so it cannot move this object when handling KeyDown events. I guess this is expected, as ViewModels should not have any knowledge of their associated Views. In not so many words...is there a way this Player user control within my MainPage.xaml can directly accept and handle KeyDown events? If not, what's the ideal method for my MainPageViewModel to communicate with its View's child controls? I'm trying to keep code out of the code-behind files as much as possible. Seems like it's best to put logic in the ViewModels for ease of testing and to decouple UI from logic.
