• Designing a silverlight dashboard with mef - is it possible? (with dynamic loading of xaps)

  Hello! I am just trying to wrap my head around MEF. And as I am really going to love it ( I guess ) I started my first sample project and immediatly stumbled into a big problem and now I am asking myself if I can use MEF for my scenario at all and that is the following: Imagine that one got some kind of dashboard with, let's say, five regions and above each region there are two comboboxes. The values in the first combobox represent different possible views (for example, chartControl, tableControl, pictureControl, ...) and the values of the second combobox represents the different data sources for the currently selected control. As the controls are very big in size one wants to download them as needed. If the user selects one comboboxitem the corresponding control xap should be loaded and displayed in this specific region. If the user selectes another control in the same combobox the control should be removed from the visualtree and the next control should be downloaded and displayed. If the user changes the selection in a different combobox the corresponding control should be loaded again only in this specific region, with perhaps different data. And to make it a little more interesting - as this is some kind of dashboard one can change the layout from five regions to - for example - ten regions. I've seen the video "MVVM with MEF in Silverlight Video Tutorial Part 2: Plugins and Metadata" ( http://csharperimage.jeremylikness.com/2010/03/mvvm-with-mef-in-silverlight-video_09.html ) but he is using an ItemsControl and is working with Visibility and he only got ONE region.   I'm running across a problem I can't seem to wrap my head around using the Read-Archive cmdlet available via PowerShell Community Extensions (v2.0.3782.38614). Here is a cut down sample used to exhibit the problem I'm running into: $mainPath = "p:\temp" $dest = Join-Path $mainPath "ps\CenCodes.zip" Read-Archive -Path $dest -Format zip Running the above produces the following error: Read-Archive : Cannot bind parameter 'Path'.   First, some visualization of the code. I have the following images that are dynamically generated from jquery. Where imgId is the requested ID from the Ajax call. //Passes the IDs retrieved from Ajax, if the IDs exist on the page the animation is triggered. if ( $('#i' + imgId ).length ) { var pickimage = '#i' + imgId; var stop = false; function highlight(pickimage) { $(pickimage).animate({color: "yellow"}, 1000, function () { $(pickimage ).animate({color: "black"}, 1000, function () { if (!stop) highlight(pickimage); }); }); } // Start the loop highlight(pickimage); } It works great, even with multiple images. But I had originally used this with one image. The problem is I need an interrupt. Something like: $(img).click(function () { stop = true; }); There's two problems: 1.)This obviously stops all animations. I can't wrap my head around how I could write something that only stops the animation of the image that's clicked. 2.)The Ajax retrieves IDs, sometimes those IDs appear more than once every few minutes, which means it would repeat the animations on top of each other if the image exists. I could use some help figuring out how to detect if an animation is already running on an image, and do nothing if the animation is already triggered on an image.

• C# 4.0 'dynamic' doesn't set ref/out arguments

  I'm experimenting with DynamicObject. One of the things I try to do is setting the values of ref/out arguments, as shown in the code below. However, I am not able to have the values of i and j in Main() set properly (even though they are set correctly in TryInvokeMember()). • Email function using templates. Includes via ob_start and global vars

  I have a simple Email() class. It's used to send out emails from my website. <? Email::send($to, $subj, $msg, $options); ?> I also have a bunch of email templates written in plain HTML pierced with a few PHP variables. However, I need to make a call to the backend (MyServiceInterface). That guy is exposed through RMI by using Spring (man that was easy). But the service method as described requires a listener to be registered for invokation completion purposes. So what I assume I need to achieve is transparently to the backend make it so that when the listener methods are called, really the call is going over RMI. I would have thought Spring would have a simple way to wrap a POJO (not a service singleton) with RMI calls. I looked through their documentation but they had nothing besides exposing services via RMI. Could someone point me in the right direction?

• Database Error Handling: What if You have to Call Outside service and the Transaction Fails?

  We all know that we can always wrap our database call in transaction ( with or without a proper ORM), in a form like this: $con = Propel::getConnection(EventPeer::DATABASE_NAME); try { $con->begin(); // do your update, save, delete or whatever here. $con->commit(); } catch (PropelException $e) { $con->rollback(); throw $e; } This way would guarantee that if the transaction fails, the database is restored to the correct status. But the problem is that let's say when I do a transaction, in addition to that transaction, I need to update another database ( an example would be when I update an entry in a column in databaseA, another entry in a column in databaseB must be updated). How to handle this case? Let's say, this is my code, I have three databases that need to be updated ( dbA, dbB, dbc): $con = Propel::getConnection("dbA"); try { $con->begin(); // update to dbA // update to dbB //update to dbc $con->commit(); } catch (PropelException $e) { $con->rollback(); throw $e; } If dbc fails, I can rollback the dbA but I can't rollback dbb. I think this problem should be database independent. And since I am using ORM, this should be ORM independent as well. Update: Some of the database transactions are wrapped in ORM, some are using naked PDO, oledb ( or whatever bare minimum language provided database calls). So my solution has to take care this. Any idea?

• How to publish internal data to the internet - as simple as possible

  We have a .net 2-tier application where a desktop program is talking to a database. We support MS SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008 and Oracle 9, 10 and 11. The application is sold, not as shrink-wrap, but pretty close. It is quite important for us that the installation and configuration is as easy as possible as installation instructions are usually supplied in written form to the customers internal IT-department. Our application is usually not seen as mission critical for the IT-department, so we need to keep their work down to a minimum. Now we are starting to get wishes for a web application build on top of the same data. The web application will be hosted by us and delivered as a SaaS application. Now the challenge is how to move data back and forth between the web application and the customers internal database. as I see it we have some requirements: We must be ready to handle the situation where the customers database is not accessible from the DMZ. I guess the easiest solution is that all communication is initiated from inside the customers lan. As little firewall configuration as possible. The best is if we can run without any special configuration as long as outgoing traffic from the customers lan are not blocked. If we need something changed in the firewall, we must be able to document that the change is secure. It doesn't have to be real time. Moving data in batches every ten minutes or so is OK. Data moves both ways, but not the same tables, so we don't have to support merges. It would be nice if we don't have to roll our own framework completely. Looking forward to hear your suggestions.

• How to get the output of an XslCompiledTransform into an XmlReader?

  I have an XslCompiledTransform object, and I want the output in an XmlReader object, as I need to pass it through a second stylesheet. I'm getting a bit confused - I can successfully transform some XML and read it using either a StreamReader or an XmlDocument, but when I try an XmlReader, I get nothing. In the example below, stylesheet is my XslCompiledTransform object. The first two Console.WriteLine calls output the correct transformed XML, but the third call gives no XML. I'm guessing it might be that the XmlTextReader is expecting text, so maybe I need to wrap this in a StreamReader..? What am I doing wrong? • Prevent Text Input expanding in IE

  Hi, I am having a problem with an input field in IE. The code is for a portlet and widths need to be dynamic as the user can place the portlet on any of the three columns in the page which all have different widths. As always it works fine in FF but not in IE. In order to make the width dyanaic I have set width="100%". Data to populate the text input comes from a DB. When the page is rendered if there is a long URL the text input expands to fill the contents in IE but in FF it just stays the same width (ie 100% of the TD that it lives in). How can I stop IE from changing the width in order to fit the contents. Setting the width to a fixed width of 100px fixes the issue but I need to have the width as a percentage in order to accommodate the layout of the portlet wherever it is put in on the page. I have tried overflow:hidden and word-wrap:break-word but I cant get either to work. I would prefer to use states, but I do not know of any way to just tell blend and xaml to "When a selected item is changed, change the image opacity to 1 over a period of .3 seconds". Infact, I have been doing this in the .cs file using the VisualStateManager. Also, there is another issue. When the selected index is changed, we goto the CS file and look at SelectedItem. SelectedItem returns an instance of the Object in which it was bound to (The object inside the observable collection), and NOT an instance of the DataTemplate/ListItem etc. So how am I able to pull the correct image out of this list? State animation with VisualStateManager I can handle fine if its just normal things, but when it comes to generated listboxes' items, I'm lost. Thanks

• Java SWT: wrapping syncExec and asyncExec to clean up code

  I have a Java Application using SWT as the toolkit, and I'm getting tired of all the ugly boiler plate code it takes to update a GUI element. Just to set a disabled button to be enabled I have to go through something like this: shell.getDisplay().asyncExec(new Runnable() { public void run() { buttonOk.setEnabled(true); } }); I prefer keeping my source code as flat as I possibly can, but I need a whopping 3 indentation levels just to do something simple. Is there some way I can wrap it? I would like a class like: public class UIUpdater { public static void updateUI(Shell shell, *function_ptr*) { shell.getDisplay().asyncExec(new Runnable() { public void run() { //Execute function_ptr } }); } } And can be used like so: UIUpdater.updateUI(shell, buttonOk.setEnabled(true)); Something like this would be great for hiding that horrible mess SWT seems to think is necessary to do anything. As I understand it, Java cannot do functions pointers. But Java 7 will have something called Closures which should be what I want. But in the meantime is there anything at all I can do to pass a function pointer or callback to another function to be executed? As an aside, I'm starting to think it'd be worth the effort to redo this application in Swing, and I don't have to put up with this ugly crap and non-cross-platformyness of SWT.

• JavaScript (SVG drawing): Positioning x amount of points in an area

  I'm using http://raphaeljs.com/ to try and draw multiple small circles. The problem I'm having is that the canvas has a fixed width, and if I want to draw, say, 1000 circles, they don't wrap onto a 'new line' (because you have to specify the xy position of each circle). E.g. I want this: .................................................. to look like this: ............................ ...................... At the moment I'm doing this: for ( var i = 0; i < 1000; i++ ) { var multiplier = i*3; if ( i <= 50 ) { paper.circle((2*multiplier),2,2); } else if ( i >= 51 && i <= 101 ) { paper.circle((2*multiplier) - 304,8,2); } else if ( i >= 152 && i <= 202 ) { paper.circle((2*multiplier) - 910,14,2); } } For reference: circle(x co-ord, y co-ord, radius) This is messy. I have to add an if statement for every new line I want. Must be a better way of doing it..?

• Put together tiles in android sdk and use as background

  In a feeble attempt to learn some Android development am I stuck at graphics. My aim here is pretty simple: Take n small images and build a random image, larger than the screen with possibility to scroll around. Have an animated object move around on it I have looked at the SDK examples, Lunar Lander especially but there are a few things I utterly fail to wrap my head around. I've got a birds view plan (which in my head seems reasonably sane): How do I merge the tiles into one large image? The background is static so I figure I should do like this: Make a 2d array with refs to the tiles Make a large Drawable and draw the tiles on it At init draw this big image as the background At each onDraw redraw the background of the previous spot of the moving object, and the moving object at its new location The problem is the hands on things. I load the small images with "Bitmap img1 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource (res, R.drawable.img1)", but then what? Should I make a canvas and draw the images on it with "canvas.drawBitmap (img1, x, y, null);"? If so how to get a Drawable/Bitmap from that? I'm totally lost here, and would really appreciate some hands on help (I would of course be grateful for general hints as well, but I'm primarily trying to understand the Graphics objects). • Formatting Parameters for Ajax POST request to Rails Controller - for jQuery-UI sortable list

  I'm using the jQuery-UI Sortable Connected Lists. I'm saving the order of the connected lists to a Rails server. My approach is to grab the list ID, column ID and index position of each list item. I want to then wrap this into an object that can be passed as a parameter back to the Rails Controller to be saved into the database. So ideally i'm looking to format the parameter like this: Parameters: {"Activity"=>[{id:1,column:2,position:1},{id:2,column:2,position:2} ,...]} How do I properly format my parameters to be passed in this Ajax POST request? • Korn shell wraparound

  Okay, I'm sure this is simple but it is driving me nuts. I recently went to work on a program where I've had to step back in time a bit and use Redhat 9. When I'm typing on the command line from a standard xterm running Korn shell, when I reach the end of the line the screen slides to the right (cutting off the left side of my command) instead of wrapping the text around to a new line. This makes things difficult for me because I can't easily copy and paste from the previous command straight from the command line. I have to look at the history and paste the command from there. In case you're wondering, I do a lot of command-line awk scripts that cause the line to get quite long. Is there a way to force the command line to wrap instead of shifting visibility to the right side of the command I'm typing? I've poured through man page options with no luck. I'm running XFree86 4.2.99.903(174) and KSH 5.2.14. Thanks.

  I'm working on heavily dynamic and configurable CMS system. Therefore, many pages are composed of a dynamically loaded set of user controls. To enable loose coupling between containers (pages) and children (user controls), all user controls are responsible for their own persistence. Each User Control is wired up to its data/service layer dependencies via IoC. They also implement an IPersistable interface, which allows the container .aspx page to issue a Save command to its children without knowledge of the number or exact nature of these user controls.   OK, I have a list (<ul>) then inside each <li> element I have an <a...> Here are all the applicable CSS items to the <a> tag .search_area li a { font-size:11px; } sResCntr li { list-style-type:none; } body { font-family:Arial; } Everything looked great, until I put that font-size:11px in there. The problem is that the hyperlinks wrap to multiple lines within the list (which is fine). But when I decrease the font-size, the last line of the hyperlink always has a larger gap between it and the line above it than the other lines. All the other lines look good, but the last line looks like it is 1.5 spaced or something. I have adjusted the line-height property, but always the last line is larger than the rest. If you need a demo to look at to see what I mean, I can arrange it when I get home.

• C# XAML get new width and height for Canvas

  I have searched through many times but have not seen this before. Probably really simple question but can't wrap my head around it. Wrote a VSTO add-in for Excel that draws a Grid dynamically. Then launches a new window and replaces the contents of the Canvas with the generated Grid. The problem is with printing. When I call the print procedure the canvas.height and canvas.width returned is the old value prior to replacing it with the grid. Basically a wrapper for an ImageField that generates a thumbnail. upload_to="images/blogs", height_field="imageheight", width_field="imagewidth", help_text = "Select an image to upload.", thumbnail={'size': (360,720)}, generate_on_save=True, ) The EntryImage class shows up as an inline in the admin page for Entry. What I'd like to do is place a link or a button beside each of these inlines that does the following: Save the EntryImage Append <Image x> to the content of the Entry, where x is the number of the EntryImage. This will be replaced by the image's thumbnail using a template filter. Save the Entry Return to editing the Entry I have looked into this, but I just can't wrap my head around where I'm supposed to add this button or link. Has anyone else tried something similar? I've got JQuery available, since I'm using WYMEditor for the content field of the Entry class. Would this help? Thanks in advance, Lexo

• Javascript Callback when variable is set to X

  Hey everyone, Have an issue I can't seem to wrap my head around. I'm wanting to write a generic javascript function that will accept a variable and a callback, and continue to execute until that variable is something other than false. For example, the variable SpeedFeed.user.sid is false until something else happens in the code, but I don't want to execute a particular callback until it has been set. The call: SpeedFeed.helper_ready(SpeedFeed.user.sid, function(){ alert(SpeedFeed.user.sid); // Run function that requires sid to be set. }); The function: helper_ready: function(vtrue, callback){ if(vtrue != false){ callback(); } else { setTimeout(function(){ SpeedFeed.helper_ready(vtrue, callback); }, SpeedFeed.apiCheckTime); } } The issue I've narrowed it down to appears to be that because in the setTimeout I call vtrue instead of the actual SpeedFeed.user.sid, it's going to be set to false always. I realize I could write a specific function for each time that just evaluates the SpeedFeed.user.sid, but I'd like to have a generic method that I could use throughout the application.
