• SQL Server 2008 R2 Replication log reader could not execute sp_replcmds

  This log reader agent worked perfectly for several months until the user referenced in the error was removed from the domain. After that time the error 'The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'SERVER'' was received with more detail 'Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user' that referenced said user. This user was referenced nowhere in the the log reader agent other than the Publication Access List from which it was subsequenctly removed. The agent would still not successfully start up. The simple problem here, I believe, is that the log reader agent was created under that user and that no longer exists in the domain. Is there an 'owner' somewhere that needs to be changed? Every other function on the database continues to execute successfully. Any other help or thought would be appreciated.

• You wouldn&rsquo;t drink 9 year old milk would you?

  This is an absolutely brilliant campaign to urge users that its time to move on from IE 6. I like how it puts it terms that everyone can understand and has probably experienced at one time or another. How many times have you opened the milk, took a sniff, and experienced that visceral reaction that accompanies catching a whiff of milk that has turned to the dark side of the force? I call it Darth Vader milk. :-) Of course I’m assuming that you haven’t used IE 6 for a long time now. It is our responsibility as information technology workers to communicate to our friends and family how lame using IE 6 is. Shame them into upgrading if necessary. I don’t care how you get through to them but get through. Tell them that only losers use IE 6. Tell them you’ll cut them out of the your will. Tell them they’re banned from your annual BBQ blowout. Tell them that [insert their favorite celebrity’s name here] thinks people using IE6 are losers.  :-) Seriously, IE6 sucks and blows at the same time and has got to go for a number of reasons including the security leaks that come with using it. Confidentially, I urge them to upgrade for purely selfish reasons. Because I am the first level of computer support for waaaaaay to many of my family members I always advocate they use a current browser (IE 8 or Firefox) and anti-virus software (AVG). Call me selfish but I’d rather not waste my time dealing with a virus or malware that could potentially slip through with IE6. Yes, I’m selfish with my time that way. :-) Have a day. :-|

• Should I quit using Ifconfig?

  With the servers that mount Infiniband cards, when I use the ifconfig command I have the warning: Ifconfig uses the ioctl access method to get the full address information, which limits hardware addresses to 8 bytes. Because Infiniband address has 20 bytes, only the first 8 bytes are displayed correctly. Ifconfig is obsolete! For replacement check ip. Should I quit using ifconfig? It is deprecated in favor of ip command? Or it will be update in the near future.

• How can I attach RAWs to already imported JPEGs in Aperture

  I shoot photos in RAW+JPEG mode since I got my DSLR. In the beginning I only used the JPEGs but lately I'm using RAW more and more. Unfortunately I imported only JPEGs in my first projects in Aperture. I already tagged, starred and cropped a lot of images and don't want to loose these information. But I would now like to "add" the RAWs to the old masters, so I can do more editing on these images. I didn't find any way to create a RAW+JPEG original in Aperture other than importing as such right in the beginning. Can anyone help? Greetings -Sascha-

• Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

  Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime. • Is there a common X-Header for RFC 2821 "MAIL FROM"? Should it be DKIM signed?

  w.r.t. the difference between RFC2821 MAIL From and RFC2822 FROM I'm considering having my MTA add a header specifying what was sent in the MAIL FROM portion of the envelope. The RFC2821 header is used for receiving email bouncebacks, and is the header that is checked in SPF and some SenderID configurations. The goal is to make it easier for diagnostics and debugging by having this low level information in the email header. What is an acceptable name for this SMTP header? Should this header be signed by DKIM? Is there any reason why it shouldn't be signed?

• XAMPP MySQL stops running after ~1.5 seconds

  I have tried installing it as a service. Nothing seems to work! I have checked the status page and MySQL is listed as "Deactivated". When trying to open phpMyAdmin I get: Error MySQL said: Documentation #1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed. phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server. and from the CD demo: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in C:\xampp\htdocs\xampp\cds.php on line 77 Could not connect to database! • Question on business connections and page rank?

  I just want to ask this question to get a yes no answer on something that I've been wondering on lately. So regarding how there are countless numbers of sites now that use the no-follow; making it harder to get ranking for your page if your website information might be something useful and will get traffic but maybe isn't something that your business connections share content of; but I am trying to find out if the benefit to having a bunch of say "likes" to your facebook page, but all the connection to your website's content isn't passing any benefit to your main page. So are you then competing with your own website in regards to SERPs to your facebook page and that of your home page. Am I correct on this; that if you start having your facebook page doing real good as far as connections and likes (helping bump up your facebook PageRank) but if you have links on your page with certain optimized keywords, that there is no benefit to your website (other than people getting to your facebook page, and then more likely to click to your page). Hope I explained it well what I am asking. Just wanted to get a better picture of this to know what I want to focus on as far as how I'll be linking to my desired landing pages in the future.

• Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook &ndash; Book Review (sort of)

  I just received my copy of the Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook, co-authored by fellow Microsoft Regional Director, Gill Cleeren, and at first glance I like what I see. I’ve always been a fan of the “cookbook” approach to technical books because they are problem/solution oriented. Often developers need solutions to solve specific questions like “how do I send email from within my .NET application” and so on, and yes, that was a blatant plug to my article explaining how to accomplish just that, but I digress. :-) I also enjoy the cookbook approach because you can just start flipping pages and randomly stop somewhere and see what nugget of information is staring up at you from the page. Anyway, what I like about this book is that it focuses on a specific area of Silverlight development, accessing data and services.  The book is broken down into the following chapters: Chapter 1: Learning the Nuts and Bolts of Silverlight 4 Chapter 2: An Introduction to Data Binding Chapter 3: Advanced Data Binding Chapter 4: The Data Grid Chapter 5: The DataForm Chapter 6: Talking to Services Chapter 7: Talking to WCF and ASMX Services Chapter 8: Talking to REST and WCF Data Services Chapter 9: Talking to WCF RIA Services Chapter 10: Converting Your Existing Applications to Use Silverlight As you can see this book is all about working with Silverlight 4 and data. • FM Transmitter for the Home

  After asking this question regarding piping music through my home I'm looking to buy an FM transmitter. I'd like to connect it to my home pc (ie. into the speaker port), and I'd then control the output with my iPhone (ie. using Apple's Remote software). The problem is, given that almost every FM transmitter is advertised to be used in the car (ie. an iTrip) it's proving very tricky knowing which one would be ideal for the home. First, has anyone tried this? Did it work ok or was there simply to much interference for it work. Secondly, if it did work ok, can anyone recommend a reasonable transmitter? For what I need it seems like an ideal solution, so given that I'm struggling to find information regarding it I'm starting to believe it's not as ideal as it first seems. Thanks in advanance.

  One of the most common tasks we face as a web developers is displaying data in a grid. In its simplest incarnation, a grid merely displays information about a set of records - the orders placed by a particular customer, perhaps; however, most grids offer features like sorting, paging, and filtering to present the data in a more useful and readable manner. In ASP.NET WebForms the GridView control offers a quick and easy way to display a set of records in a grid, and offers features like sorting, paging, editing, and deleting with just a little extra work. On page load, the GridView automatically renders as an HTML <table> element, freeing you from having to write any markup and letting you focus instead on retrieving and binding the data to display to the GridView. In an ASP.NET MVC application, however, developers are on the hook for generating the markup rendered by each view. This task can be a bit daunting for developers new to ASP.NET MVC, especially those who have a background in WebForms. • Use C2WTS to get a classic windows identity from a claims identity

  SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information I know you’re going to find this useful at some point. A lot of backend systems still demand classic windows identities, but everything we do now has moved to claims. So sometimes (albeit rare), we have to translate a claims identity into a classic windows identity. This is where the “Claims to Windows Token Service” comes into play. SharePoint 2010 and 2013 make use of this but you can use this in any .NET application. First of all, there are some basic requirements for this to work, First, you will need the string value of a UPN claim. Just a string value, really! This means you can also use FBA or anything else. The “proper” way to do this of course is that you must originate this from a AD backed claim. So a user authenticated using ADFS or similar would be perfect. • What's the best way to manage error logging for exceptions?

  Introduction If an error occurs on a website or system, it is of course useful to log it, and show the user a polite message with a reference code for the error. And if you have lots of systems, you don't want this information dotted around - it is good to have a single centralised place for it. At the simplest level, all that's needed is an incrementing id and a serialized dump of the error details. (And possibly the "centralised place" being an email inbox.) At the other end of the spectrum is perhaps a fully normalised database that also allows you to press a button and see a graph of errors per day, or identifying what the most common type of error on system X is, whether server A has more database connection errors than server B, and so on. What I'm referring to here is logging code-level errors/exceptions by a remote system - not "human-based" issue tracking, such as done with Jira,Trac,etc. Questions I'm looking for thoughts from developers who have used this type of system, specifically with regards to: What are essential features you couldn't do without? What are good to have features that really save you time? What features might seem a good idea, but aren't actually that useful? For example, I'd say a "show duplicates" function that identifies multiple occurrence of an error (without worrying about 'unimportant' details that might differ) is pretty essential. A button to "create an issue in [Jira/etc] for this error" sounds like a good time-saver. Just to re-iterate, what I'm after is practical experiences from people that have used such systems, preferably backed-up with why a feature is awesome/terrible. (If you're going to theorise anyway, at the very least mark your answer as such.)

Likely to be reproduced when: You will usually encounter this problem when you have downloaded a sample application that is a 32-bit application targeted for ASP.NET 2.0 or 3.5, and you have IIS7 on a 64-bit OS running .NET 4.0, because the default setting for running 32-bit application on IIS7 with 64-bit OS is false. Resolution: 1. Go to IIS Management Console Start -> Administration Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager 2. Expand your server in the left pane and go to Application Pools 3. Right click to select ‘Add Application Pool’  4. Create anew AppPool. I have named it ASP.NET v2.0 AppPool (32-bit) and selected .NET Framework v2.0.50727 because I intend to run my ASP.NET 3.5 application on it. 5. Now right click the newly created AppPool and select Advanced Settings 6. Change the property “Enable 32-Bit Applications” from False to True  7. Now select your actual web application from the left panel. Right click the web application, and go to Manage Application -> Advanced Settings  8. Change the Property “Application Pool” to your newly created AppPool.  And… the error is gone…

• Grapher: Edit Equations Without GUI

  I'm trying to edit the equation of a Grapher file without opening the Grapher UI. I've gotten as far as knowing that I need a hex editor to do this. I can't, however, find my equation in that file to change it. Does anyone know how Grapher stores this information, and how to change it? My ultimate goal is to be able to change the file through the shell so I can open it and have Grapher show me my new equation (that was set with the CL). Thanks! I will set a bounty if necessary.

• Speeding up Connection Between Computer and Wireless/Bridged Router

  Hey everyone, I looked through other questions, but didn't find useful responses. Our main computer has a dl speed of 6 Mbps, but some of our other computers are getting only 40-200 Kb! The router is wireless, but all computers are connected using a Netgear Wall-Plugged Bridge XE102, which transmits information via the building's powerline. It can't be the hardware itself, however, because some computers still manage decent speeds. The computers afflicted are running on Microsoft XP Service Packs 2 and 3, but so are computers that are totally functional. These speeds severely impede on productivity and are excruciatingly frustrating when trying to cram in time in the early hours. Could it be an issue with the computer? Location? Router?   How can I install the .NET 4.0 Framework on Windows 8 Pro / Visual Studio 2012 Professional? I get this: and if I follow the link of Install other frameworks... I get into Microsoft page where I find this information: I have then installed .NET Framework 4.0.1 Targeting Pack and .NET Framework 4.0.2 Targeting Pack as I can't install 4.0.3, restarted the machine over an over, but Visual Studio continues not to show the framework on the dropdown menu.   I need to unarchive a file to the /Developer folder. Install Qt for iOS SDK The Qt for iOS SDK has been configured to be installed in the default Xcode installation location /Developer. It is not possible to install the SDK into another location without first rebuilding it, as the install location is contained within the qmake executable, and that is built as part of Qt. To install the Qt for iOS SDK, open ‘Terminal’ and type the following from the command­-line: tar –xf qt­-everywhere-­ios­-4.8.0­-xxx.tar.gz –C /Developer (where xxx is an identifier which can be used to determine the build of the iOS SDK eg. arm7-­-nossl) This will install the Qt for iOS SDK into the following path: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/share/qt­-everywhere­-ios­-4.8.0 When I perform the operation I get the information: Lions-Mac:Documents User$ tar -xf qt-everywhere-ios-4.8.0-arm7-nossl.tar.gz -C /Developer tar: could not chdir to '/Developer' Any idea what is wrong?

• Cannot increase my screen resolution

  I am trying to install my new monitor but my Graphics Adapter (Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family) does not offer a resolution of 1920x1080 in the [Display Properties Settings] window. It only offers up to 1360x768. Can anyone explain to me how I can increase this number to the correct resolution. The monitor does show my the windows desktop, albeit at a lower resolution which is being stretched to fill the screen, making it look very blurry. I have installed the "Monitor Drivers" I found on the disk supplied with new monitor, but these do not appear to have made any difference. The Intel software that comes with the graphics card has an information window containing lots of info about the card and the monitor itself. • Laptop overheating within minutes of start up

  I have a Dell Windows 7 Home Prem with an I7-720QM. More information on the computer can be found here http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/servicetag/51CVCN1/configuration The Problem I am having is the computer will over heat unnaturally fast. From the time it takes from boot to when i can run my diagnostic tools which takes about two minutes the cpu temp is 86c after a few more minutes the cpu temp will reach 100 and the computer will black screen shut down. In total the the laptop can only be run for 3-5 minutes before completely shutting off. During this time there is nothing extensive running. After the laptop shuts down you have to wait for it to cool down or it will shut off even faster sometimes 7-15 seconds well still in the boot screen. Does anyone know what could be the problem maybe a sensor or is the computer fried?
