  • Most effective way to draw 4 lines on a screen?

    - by Ross
basic question, but I'm unsure: I want to draw 4 short lines 1px lines on a view. What is the best way to approach this task? Options:- Load an image of the line, can create 4 UIImageViews with it. Create my own subclass of a UIView that draws a line in the draw rect method. Draw elsewhere on another view, another UIImageView that has an UIImage inside it (is this possible?) Another way? Thanks Ross

  • How do you display a binary search tree?

    - by fakeit
I'm being asked to display a binary search tree in sorted order. The nodes of the tree contain strings. I'm not exactly sure what the best way is to attack this problem. Should I be traversing the tree and displaying as I go? Should I flatten the tree into an array and then use a sorting algorithm before I display? I'm not looking for the actual code, just a guide where to go next.

  • How to clip a rectangle from a tiff?

    - by TooFat
I have a Winforms Gui in C# that allows a user to draw a rectangle on a display of a tiff and save the position, height, width etc. Basically, what I want to do is take the saved position, height and width of the rectangle and clip that area into a sep. bitmap that can then be passed to sep. method that will just OCR the new clip of the bitmap only. What is the best way to do this?

  • How to designing a generic databse whos layout may change over time?

    - by mawg
Here's a tricky one - how do I programatically create and interrogate a database who's contents I can't really foresee? I am implementing a generic input form system. The user can create PHP forms with a WYSIWYG layout and use them for any purpose he wishes. He can also query the input. So, we have three stages: a form is designed and generated. This is a one-off procedure, although the form can be edited later. This designs the database. someone or several people make use of the form - say for daily sales reports, stock keeping, payroll, etc. Their input to the forms is written to the database. others, maybe management, can query the database and generate reports. Since these forms are generic, I can't predict the database structure - other than to say that it will reflect HTML form fields and consist of a the data input from collection of edit boxes, memos, radio buttons and the like. Questions and remarks: A) how can I best structure the database, in terms of tables and columns? What about primary keys? My first thought was to use the control name to identify each column, then I realized that the user can edit the form and rename, so that maybe "name" becomes "employee" or "wages" becomes ":salary". I am leaning towards a unique number for each. B) how best to key the rows? I was thinking of a timestamp to allow me to query and a column for the row Id from A) C) I have to handle column rename/insert/delete. Foe deletion, I am unsure whether to delete the data from the database. Even if the user is not inputting it from the form any more he may wish to query what was previously entered. Or there may be some legal requirements to retain the data. Any gotchas in column rename/insert/delete? D) For the querying, I can have my PHP interrogate the database to get column names and generate a form with a list where each entry has a database column name, a checkbox to say if it should be used in the query and, based on column type, some selection criteria. That ought to be enough to build searches like "position = 'senior salesman' and salary 50k". E) I probably have to generate some fancy charts - graphs, histograms, pie charts, etc for query results of numerical data over time. I need to find some good FOSS PHP for this. F) What else have I forgotten? This all seems very tricky to me, but I am database n00b - maybe it is simple to you gurus?

  • How to auto-generate externs for the Google Closure Compiler

    - by ivo
Suppose you are working in a javascript project with several external library dependencies, and want to compile your sources using the Google Closure Compiler in ADVANCED_OPTIMIZATIONS mode. Since in this mode the compiler will rename your code calls to the external libraries objects and functions, you must provide externs, to prevent this renaming from happening. But, it is a lot of work to produce the externs by hand, so, what is the best way to auto-generate the appropriate extern from a given javascript lib?

  • ASP.NET MVC and F# Service

    - by Shawn Mclean
My solution is split into 3 projects. Model, Services and Web. In my Service project, I'd like to use some F# features in it. Is it possible to add mix both F# and C# files in that project (a library[.dll])? If not possible, whats the best way to use 2 separate service projects, one for C# and one for F# and how would I structure these projects?

  • Conventions for order of parameters in a function

    - by Andy
In writing functions my brain always spends a few milliseconds to check which order of parameters would be best for a given function. should I write: public Comment AddComment(long userID, string title, string text) Or probably: public Comment AddComment(string title, string text, long userID) Why not: public Comment AddComment(string title, long userID, string text) Do you follow any rules when ordering the parameters for your functions? Which parameter would you place first and which would follow?

  • sql query to return items based on text and group ID

    - by mattgcon
I am not sure how to best describe what I am trying to do (or search for it for that matter) but I am going to try. I have a pre-existing query (stored procedure) that returns items based on 3 specific ID's. What I want to do is to be able to reduce the results even further based upon a column within the results having the exact same string. For some reason I am confused about how to do this, I am drawing a complete blank about this. Please help

  • What would I use to remove escaped html from large sets of data.

    - by Elizabeth Buckwalter
Our database is filled with articles retrieved from RSS feeds. I was unsure of what data I would be getting, and how much filtering was already setup (WP-O-Matic Wordpress plugin using the SimplePie library). This plugin does some basic encoding before insertion using Wordpress's built in post insert function which also does some filtering. I've figured out most of the filters before insertion, but now I have whacko data that I need to remove. This is an example of whacko data that I have data in one field which the content I want in the front, but this part removed which is at the end: <img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/SoundOnTheSound?i=xFxEpT2Add0:xFbIkwGc-fk:V_sGLiPBpWU" border="0"></img> <img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/SoundOnTheSound?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"></img> &lt;img src=&quot;http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/SoundOnTheSound?i=xFxEpT2Add0:xFbIkwGc-fk:D7DqB2pKExk&quot; Notice how some of the images are escape and some aren't. I believe this has to do with the last part being cut off so as to be unrecognizable as an html tag, which then caused it to be html endcoded. Another field has only this which is now filtered before insertion, but I have to get rid of the others: &lt;img src=&quot;http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2183/2289902369_1d95bcdb85.jpg&quot; alt=&quot;post_img&quot; width=&quot;80&quot; (all examples are on one line, but broken up for readability) Question: What is the best way to work with the above escaped html (or portion of an html tag)? I can do it in Perl, PHP, SQL, Ruby, and even Python. I believe Perl to be the best at text parsing, so that's why I used the Perl tag. And PHP times out on large database operations, so that's pretty much out unless I wanted to do batch processing and what not. PS One of the nice things about using Wordpress's insert post function, is that if you use php's strip_tags function to strip out all html, insert post function will insert <p> at the paragraph points. Let me know if there's anything more that I can answer. Some article that didn't quite answer my questions. • Intersection of two regular expressions

    - by Henry
Hi, Im looking for function (PHP will be the best), which returns true whether exists string matches both regexpA and regexpB. Example 1: $regexpA = '[0-9]+'; $regexpB = '[0-9]{2,3}'; hasRegularsIntersection($regexpA,$regexpB) returns TRUE because '12' matches both regexps Example 2: $regexpA = '[0-9]+'; $regexpB = '[a-z]+'; hasRegularsIntersection($regexpA,$regexpB) returns FALSE because numbers never matches literals. Thanks for any suggestions how to solve this. Henry

  • Linqify this: Aggregate a subset of a list

    - by JMarsch
Suppose I have a list or array of items, and I want to sum a subset of the items in the list. (in my case, it happens to always be a sequential subset). Here's the old-fashioned way: int sum = 0; for(int i = startIndex; i <= stopIndex; i++) sum += myList[i].TheValue; return sum; What's the best way to linqify that code?
