• Windows XP long login (15 minutes +)

  I'm having a lot of issues with our Windows XP SP3 machines (about 5, but every week another gets on the bandwagon of this issue). They take forever (15 minutes) to apply the user settings once our employee's enter their username and password to login to our domain. It only happens say if a user has reboot the machine and then when they go to log back in then it hangs forever. Reboot and restart are the key words for sure I've noticed with this issue. Here are things I have tested: •Made sure the DNS was set to point to our two servers (Server01 & Server02 are DNS Domain Controllers, 01 is primary and 02 backup). •No major changes have been applied to our network. •All profiles are local, so I have deleted out local profiles that aren't being used on those machines that run slow. •Also I have tried to enable and disable the Enable Fast Login under the local machines GP. It was not configured originally and when I tested both, it made the computer hang on "applying computer settings" for about 15 minutes. When it finally came up to the login screen the it was very quick to login to the domain. However this doesn't fix my issue, and even more frustrating upon setting it back to being not configured it now still takes for forever to apply computer settings. •I enabled the userenv log and here is what I see, but my experience is limited and I'm not sure how to read it exactly. • Anyone else got a problem with ZoneEdit NS2 and NS17 servers?

  My DNS zone record appears to be degrading. NSLOOKUP on www.whatpub.org gives a timeout. Am I right in saying this means the two ZoneEdit nameservers I use (ns2.zoneedit.com & ns17.zoneedit.com) are not responding to requests? Cheers, Rob.

  I have four nameservers registered for a domain: ns1.primary-nameserver.net ns2.primary-nameserver.net a.ns.secondary-nameserver.net b.ns.secondary-nameserver.net How can I find out how much usage each nameserver is getting? Or is it safe to assume that it's 25% to each? Update I don't control the nameservers, they are provided by third party suppliers like DNS Made Easy, Zerigo, Route 53, etc. I am trying to establish whether all listed nameservers are used equally.

• HOSTS ignored when disconnected [closed]

  Problem I’m seeing a strange and extremely frustrating problem. Any system that is not connect to the Internet (Windows 7 shows the no Internet access icon because it cannot constantly ping Microsoft’s servers) cannot even access locally hosted servers. Hypothesis The problem appears to be that the HOSTS file is not being used to resolve DNS entries when there are no active NICs. Tests / Reproduction You can reproduce it as so: Disconnect a system from the Internet (make sure all wired and wireless connections are disconnected). If necessary, add an entry to the HOSTS file (e.g., 127.0.0.1 foobar or 127.0.0.1 foobar.com) Open a command-prompt Type ping foobar or ping foobar.com Observations The screenshots below show a clear and demonstrative example. In the first snap, a laptop is connected to a router wirelessly. The HOSTS file has only three entries and they resolve just fine. In the second snap, the wireless radio is turned off, so the entries in the HOSTS file are ignored. Moreover, notice that pinging localhost still works even without any active NICs (as does 127.0.0.1), but it is using the IPv6 address (must be hard-coded). You can see the same results in Windows XP with no IPv6 installed, so it has nothing to do with IPv6. I tried pining what should have resolved to 127.0.0.1 while the desktop system (with no wireless NICs) was connected via its Ethernet adapter, then again after pulling the cable from the router and waiting a couple of seconds, then again after plugging the cable back in. The same thing happens if instead of pulling out the cable, the NIC is disabled through software (the [Disable] button in the NIC’s Status dialog or via Device Manager). Conclusions It looks as though the HOSTS file is only being read and used if there is an active NIC, otherwise it is being ignored. This makes some sense in that if there are no active network adapters, then presumably there will not be any network activity, and thus no need to resolve host names via the HOSTS file. This assumption is specious however because it precludes locally hosted virtual servers. The HOSTS file should be used regardless of external DNS server connectivity, otherwise you cannot use simple/consistent/testing-production names for locally hosted servers when not connected to the Internet (for example web servers; help servers for Visual Studio, 3dsmax, etc.; and so on). Question Does anyone know how to force Windows to use the HOSTS file even if there are no active NICs?   Just a short and easy question, I hope. Currently, I've got a primary domain linked to my (virtual) hosting server. I now have a second domain name which I would like to link to a specific subdomain, i.e. domainB.com/X - subdom.domainA.com/X Preferably without having this redirect show up in the address bar. Can this be achieved through DNS settings alone, or would it require me to add a .htaccess file in Domain A's root folder?

• VPN: Does all traffic get routed through the VPN when I am logged in?

  If I log into a slow VPN with only a 15k/s connection, when I try to go to kernel.org or some other site to download something, is everything getting routed through that other network? (so my max speed for all downloads is 15k/s?) Or are only the DNS requests getting routed and I can still get my normal download speeds I would have been able to before logging into the router?

• Simple Webserver failover

  I have a Lenovo X200 laptop on which I am running Ubuntu 9.10. Recently, (I assume after some updating, but I really don't know) my ethernet port stopped working under Linux. A more tech/linux-savvy friend of mine was able to temporarily fix the problem by manually editing the resolv.conf file with the DNS servers he found through his connection. However, after rebooting, the problem came back and now I am looking for a more permanent solution.

• Windows Server 2008 Migration - Did I miss something?

  I'm running in to a few complications in my migration process. My main role has been a Linux / Sun administrator for 15 yrs so Windows server 2008 environment is a bit new to me, but understandable. Here's our situation and reason for migrating... We have a group of developers that develop VERY low-level software in Visual C with some inline assembler. All the workstations were separate from each other which cased consistency problems with development libraries, versions, etc... Our goal was to throw them all on to a Windows domain were we can control workstation installations, hot fixes (which can cause enormous problems), software versions, etc... All Development Workstations are running Windows XP x32 (sp3) and x64 (sp2) I running in to user permission problems and I was wondering maybe I missed one, tWO or a handful of things during my deployment. Here is what I have currently done: Installed and Activated Windows Server 2008 Added Roles for DNS and Active Directory Configured DNS with WINS for netbios name usage Added developers to AD and mapped their shared folders to their profile Added roles for IIS7 and configured the developers SVN Installed MySQL Enterprise Edition for development usage Not having a firm understanding of Group Policy I haven't delved deeply in to that realm yet. Problems I'm encountering: 1. When I configure any XP workstations to logon our domain, once a user uses their new AD login, everything goes well, except they have very restrictive permissions. (Eg: If a user opens any existing file, they don't have write access, except in their documents folder.) Since these guys are working on low system level events, they need to r/w all files. All I'm looking to restrict in software installations. Am I correct to assume that I can use WSUS to maintain the domains hot fixes and updates pushed to the workstations? I need to map a centralized shared development drive upon the users login. This is open to EVERYONE. Right now I have the users folders mapped upon login through their AD profile. But how do I map a share if I've already defined one within their profile in AD? Any responses would be very grateful. Do I have to configure and define a group policy for the domain users? Can I use Volume Mirroring to mirror / sync two drives on two separate servers or should I just script a rsync or MS Synctool? The drives simply store nightly system images.
