• How can I connect my USB (HP) printer in 10.4, which can't be discovered and worked in 9.x

  My printer was working under 9.x. It is a an hp photosmart C3100 series. When I open the Admin- printing. no local printers are found. I try to add via other (My local choices are Serial and other). I have tried many uri's - ipp://localhost:631/ipp, http://localhost/ipp, localhost, 127.0.0.1, etc... None have worked. Under the networked I have tried JetDirect, using localhost and 127.0.0.1 and port 631. I have tried many options under IPP with different variants in the host trying to verify a printer. No luck. I tried LPD/LPR with localhost and tried the probe. no luck. I tried the cups admin via localhost:631 and that didn't work. On the old version its simply found the local printer, I might have picked the driver, I can't remember but it was the photosmart c3100 series that was working. I just can't get 10.4 to print.

• How to improve my email communication

  Paraphrase of an email I sent to a colleague I noticed a problem with System A. I have determined that it is not caused by X. I suspect that it is being caused by Y. (since you are in charge of Y) Can you please take a look at it? (The part in parentheses was not included in my email because this colleague knows full well he is in charge of Y... it should be understood that's why I was sending him the email) I run into the colleague half a day later, and say, "did you look at the problem with System A yet?" and he answers, "Oh, yeah, I got your email about System A being broken but I assumed it was probably caused by X, so I was waiting for you to check on that." Obviously my message did not get communicated. This is an all-too-common result of emails I send and is very discouraging... yet, I don't know how I could make my emails any clearer. They are always as brief, clear, and to the point as I can make them. Any suggestions? Maybe there is something inherent about the medium of email that is just not effective for these types of communications?

• Can't install the wireless driver in HP Pavilion dv2419us

  I've just installed Ubuntu 13.04 in an old HP Pavilion dv2419us. The problem is, Ubuntu doesn't detect the wireless card. But it works fine in Windows 7. • Installing 10.04 server on HP xw9400 Workstation with RAID 5

  I have a workstation that was given to me that is a friggen powerhouse, so I figured I would set it up as my development and demo server. This is my first experience installing Ubuntu onto a RAID array and so far it has not been a fun one. I have been following the Advanced Installation guide for installing Ubuntu 10.04 server, and it says that there will be an option on the Partition Disks screen to manually create the partitions, but the only options I have are: Configure iSCSI volumes Undo changes to partitions Finish partitioning and write changes to disk Just before I got to that screen I got a message that said: One or more drives containing Serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices? It doesn't matter whether I answer yes or no to that, I still get the same Partition Disks screen. When I try to select Finish partitioning and write changes to disk I just get the No root file system error. Has anyone else experienced this, and how do I get past it? Can I not run Ubuntu on this machine?

  Struggling with locating patches for Sun products? Can't find your Oracle System Drivers? This question has been raised many times by customers and was the source of a short video in the Oracle System Support Newsletter in February 2012. The transition between SunSolve and My Oracle Support is to change how you think about the type of patch your looking for. For example, in SunSolve you might have typed e1000g if looking for an Enternet Driver.. but entering e1000g will not find anything in My Oracle Support - Patches and Update Menu. As you need to use the Product (Advanced) search which is driven of the Product Name, therefore you need to type "Ethernet" and select the ethernet product you are looking for to locate the patches for this product. Just to recap that video: If you are looking for the e1000g Ethernet Driver - You need to use Advance Search and search for Enternet 1. Log into My Oracle Support - Select Patches and Updates - Select Product or Family (Advanced Search). 2. In the product line enter: Ethernet and select the product name from the menu. 3. Check remove supersede patches - that ensure you only get relevant current patches in the results. 4. Select Search and the results are displayed. Now you have more options to include the platform (Solaris,Linux etc.) if want to further narrow the search. Need more information? • Cannot view, use, or open CDs or DVDs in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am fairly new to Ubuntu 12.04 and I have encountered a rather irritating problem. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD (whether it have data, music, movies, or nothing at all), nothing pops up saying "you have inserted a CD", "play with Rhythmbox?" etc. It doesn't show the CD in the launcher/dock or anything of the sort. This is especially peculiar because not only do I have a standard IDE built-in optical drive, but I have an external USB optical drive. Neither work. In addition, whenever I go to "Computer///" and I click (double click, right click, or even left click) on "CD/DVD Drive" nothing happens, when I right click and select "Open" nothing happens either [for either of the two drives (both are listed in Computer///)] And if I insert a blank disk and go to a disk burning program such as Brasero, and try to burn to the drive it detects no CDs or DVDs of any kind. • Wireless keeps disabling or stays disconnected (Realtek RTL8191SEvB)

  There's a project I'm trying to start for Indie Game Development; specifically, it's going to be a social networking website that lets developers meet through (It's a secret). One of the key components is showing what skills members have. Question: I need to know what MAJOR game development roles are not represented in the following list, keeping in mind that many specialist roles are being condensed into more broad, generalist roles: Art Animator (Characters, creatures, props, etc.) Concept Artist (2D scenes, environments, props, silhouettes, etc.) Technical Artist (UI artists, typefaces, graphic designers, etc.) 3D Artist (Modeling, rigging, texture, lighting, etc.) Audio Composer (Scores, music, etc.) Sound Engineer (SFX, mood setting, audio implementation, etc.) Voice (Dialog, acting, etc.) Design Creative Director (Initial direction, team management, communications, etc.) Gameplay Designer (Systems, mechanics, control mapping, etc.) World Designer (Level design, aesthetics, game progression, events, etc.) Writer (Story, mythos, dialog, flavor text, etc.) Programming Engine Programming (Engine creation, scripting, physics, etc.) Graphics Engineer (Sprites, lighting, GUI, etc.) Network Engineer (LAN, multiplayer, server support, etc.) Technical Director (I don't know what a technical director would even do.) • Totem crashes immediately after startup in 12.10

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 and did sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get update. Then I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, audacious and vlc from Software Center. After that I tried launch Totem Movie player but in terminal following error comes up: (totem:9295): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 1808 error_code 9 request_code 152 minor_code 9) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped) I tried purge and again install. But the error remains. What should I do?

• Wifi doesn't connect if I'm upstairs

  Hello there, I'm finding that Wifi connects when I'm in the living room, where the internet router etc is. But if I try to connect upstairs it is a no go. Booting in Windows 7 (dual boot :D ) I find that Wifi connects. I find this very confusing and have it since the install. Please help! • Do we ethically have the right to use the MAC Address for verification purposes?

  I am writing a program, or starting at the very beginning of it, and I am thinking of purchase verification systems as a final step. I will be catering to Macs, PCs, and possibly Linux if all is said and done. I will also be programming this for smartphones as well using C++ and Objective-C. (I am writing a blueprint before going head first into it) That being said, I am not asking for help on doing it yet, but what I’m looking for is a realistic measurement for what could be expected as a viable and ethical option for purchase verification systems. Apple through the Apple Store, and some other stores out there have their own "You bought it" check. I am looking to use a three prong verification system. Email/password 16 to 32 character serial number using alpha/numeric and symbols with Upper and lowercase variants. MAC Address. The first two are in my mind ok, but I have to ask on an ethical standpoint, is a MAC Address to lock the software to said hardware unethical, or is it smart? I understand if an Ethernet card changes if not part of the logic board, or if the logic board changes so does the MAC address, so if that changes it will have to be re-verified, but I have to ask with how everything is today... Is it ethical to actually use the MAC address as a validation key or no? Should I be forward with this kind of verification system or should I keep it hidden as a secret? Yes I know hackers and others will find ways of knowing what I am doing, but in reality this is why I am asking. I know no verification is foolproof, but making it so that its harder to break is something I've always been interested in, and learning how to program is bringing up these questions, because I don't want to assume one thing and find out it's not really accepted in the programming world as a "you shouldn't do that" maneuver... Thanks in advance... I know this is my first programming question, but I am just learning how to program, and I am just making sure I'm not breaking some ethical programmer credo I shouldn't...

• Laptop battery charging capacity reduced to 52%

  I have been using Ubuntu 11.04 on DELL Inspiron 14R (N5010) laptop for last three months. Before I switch to ubuntu my laptop battery used to give 2.5 hrs to 3 hrs back-up. But since I have been using ubuntu, it has been reduced to 1hr to 1.5 hrs at max. I tried following commands: $ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state which gave result as present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: charged present rate: 1 mA remaining capacity: 4400 mAh present voltage: 12407 mV then I tried $ acpi -b the result was.. • How to enable a Web portal-based rich enterprise platform on different domains and hosts using JS without customization/ server configuration

  Our company Coscend has built a Web portal-based communications and cloud collaboration platform by using JavaScript (JS), which is embedded in HTML5 and formatted with CSS3. Other technologies used in the core code include Flash, Flex, PostgreSQL and MySQL. Our team would like to host this platform on five different Windows and Linux environments that run different types of Web servers such as IIS and Apache. Technical challenge: Each of these Windows and Linux servers have a different host name and domain name (and IP address), but we would like to keep our enterprise platform independent of host server configuration. Possible approach to solution: We think an API (interface module with a GUI) is needed to accomplish this level of modularity and flexibility while deploying at our enterprise customers. Seeking your insights: In this context, our team would appreciate your guidance on: Is there an algorithmic method to implement this Web portal-based platform in these Windows and Linux environments while separating it from server configuration, i.e., customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? For example, would it be suitable to create some JS variables / objects for host name and domain name and call them in the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of portal modules, these variables or JS objects would replace that. If so, what is the best way to make these object modules written in JS portable and re-usable across different environments and instances for enterprise customers? Here is an example of the implemented code for the said platform. The following Web site (www.CoscendCommunications.com) was built using this enterprise collaboration platform and has the base code examples of the platform. This Web site is domain-specific. We like to make the underlying platform such that it is domain and host-independent. This will allow the underlying platform to be deployed in multiple instances of our enterprise customers.

  I just installed Kubuntu 12.04.2 and do not have an internet connection. I also cannot access the Desktop and only have the terminal. When I enter xlcock I get Error: Can't open display:. I believe this is because I do not have the correct drivers and need to download them ... using the internet which I can't access.
