  • Xen guest miration to host with missing features

    If I want to move a xen guet (domU) from one host (dom0) to another host on another hardware platform which misses some capabilities, say virtualisation features, especially directio or likewise, will my image be able to run despite missing capabilities of the new host? This is important because I need to know if I can prepare XEN images on my workstation with full virtualisation features and deploy same images on less capable Servers later on.     Hi, I have a safe office 500 box at my edge. (checkpoint's hardware firewall) I'm trying to connect to another office VPN using windows 7 pptp connection. It fails (saying something about enabling GRE). (after authenticating, hangs for a while, than give the error message.) Using the same computer with direct internet access (not behind the firewalls) works fine and I get connected. how do I setup the safe office to enable me to use vpn (pptp) out connections.

  • What RSS Reader can handle item-updating (JIRA search) feeds?

    Thunderbird is a good rss reader in terms of being able to connect successfully to jira authenticated search feeds (where evolution-rss and Liferea can't), but really sucks when it comes to updating. A Jira search feed will give a link id to http://jira/browse/[ticket no], and if that ticket/feed-item is updated, thunderbird refuses to update it - it already has it! (even though the item date does not match). Also, if you delete the ticket update, it will never show up again for that news account. Has anybody found an RSS reader that can work with JIRA/updating RSS items? Note: this is not the same as Jira activity feeds - those work great, as each update has a unique item id To replicate: Grab a search (any search) Get it into your rss reader Read an item, modify the linked ticket Update rss and see if the ticket bumps to most recent and unread or, generically: Get an rss feed (from your hard drive?) Firstly, is the job of the load balancer? or would a better approach be create a subdomain such as http://assets.example.com which would be automatically be routed to one of the servers?

  • Intel GMA 4500MHD flickering in opengl

    I have an application that uses OpenGL for its display. When this application is run on a laptop with an Intel GMA 4500MHD on Windows XP the OpenGL content appears to flicker/shudder between 2 frames. I have experienced the exact same problem when running this application on nVidia Quadro FX hardware, however with nVidia the problem can be corrected by disabling the "Unified Back Buffer" (UBB) feature in the driver. Does anybody know how I can disable the corresponding feature in the Intel driver?

  • Building an SSL server farm

    I'm interested in building the the architecture in the article referenced below. I currently have a modestly-priced layer-4 load balancer and my application servers are the SSL endpoints. I want to put an SSL server farm in between my load balancer and my app servers. Then I will put another inexpensive load balancer between the SSL farm and my app servers, to do layer-7 routing. My web application has a fairly high amount of consumer traffic, that 6 servers can handle at about 50% capacity. Additionally, I have infrastructure traffic that is several orders of magnitude heavier than my consumer traffic. This is data coming in from all over the world that must integrate with my web application in real time. In total I have 18 app servers to handle all the traffic, plus 6 database servers. I will be adding 6 more app servers over the next 2 weeks and another 6 the 2 weeks after that. Conservatively, I estimate I will need to scale to 120 servers by the end of the year. My motivation right now is to separate the consumer traffic from the infrastructure traffic. The consumer traffic is higher priority than the infrastructure traffic and I cannot allow a stampede on the infrastructure side to take down my consumer-facing servers. Having a website that is always up is the top priority. However if there is a failure in one of the consumer app servers, I want to route that traffic to the servers designated for infrastructure traffic. The complication is that all the traffic is addressed using the same hostname and is nearly 100% https. The only way in my case to distinguish infrastructure from consumer traffic is by URL (poor architecture I inherited), so I need a layer 7 load balancer to be able to route. However for that to work I need either a fancy hardware-based SSL terminator or an SSL server farm as described above. Because my user base is rapidly scaling, I worry that if I go down the hardware path it will become very expensive very fast, especially since I will need 4 of everything for high availability (2 identical setups in 2 facilities). Meanwhile, the above diagram seems very flexible and more horizontally scalable. Has anyone built this before? Are there pre-built configurations? What considerations should I make and what software should I use (I've heard of people using apache with mod-ssl, nginx, and stunnel)?     I have setup Postfix and Dovecot on an Ubuntu box following the instructions http://www.exratione.com/2012/05/a-mailserver-on-ubuntu-1204-postfix-dovecot-mysql/ I can see that email is being delivered to and accepted by the server, but the email is not available for retrieval via POP3. What could be missing in my configuraton? It seems that email is not being properly handed off to Dovecot.   • How do I diagnose Windows XP failure to automatically suspend on idle?

    Since upgrading my hardware (mobo, CPU and memory) a couple months ago my computer no longer automatically suspends and hibernates after the configured idle periods. Both functions work just fine manually, but if I leave the computer on overnight it's still active the next morning even though it's configured to sleep after 3 hours and hibernate after 6 hours. How do I diagnose the cause of this?

  • Symantec Gateway Security 320 VPN/Port Forwarding trouble

    How do I check to see if port forward is enabled with one of my dynamic tunnels on this device? I'm having trouble using a feature in our software that requires a vpn to be used. My firewalls shows it as connected but I'm unable to ping the subnet ip. Our software vendor told me that port forwarding might be causing this problem, but I didn't set up this network I'm on and I don't fully know symantec hardware.

    I'm wondering if there's any tools (preferably offline) that would allow me to layout all of the new equipment that will be going into several standard racks. Currently I'm using Excel to map out all of the slots columns for the data but I suspect that there is some better method of doing this. Suggestions? Edit: Dell has an online tool, but doesn't seem very good at actually saving the data that you're working on (and obviously it's geared towards Dell hardware).

  • Dell E6400 Display issue - "doubling up" intermittently

    I've got a Dell E6400 It's suddenly developed an intermittent fault with the display Every now and again, it seems to boot up with "double vision" By that I mean, its split horizontally, with each half showing the same thing, but with low resolution, and looks grainy - if that makes sense (I will try to get a couple of pictures if I can) I haven't changed any hardware or anything. I have re-built windows, to see if that fixed the problem, it didn't. I've upgraded the BIOS to see if that would help, still same problem. I'm out of ideas :-(

Since we want Windows 7 Enterprise (for features like DirectAccess and BitLocker), the vendor has supplied us with a Software Assurance only license to upgrade OEM Win 7 Pro to Win 7 Ent. Do I need to install Windows 7 Enterprise Volume License media and re-install Windows, or is there a process to turn this existing Windows 7 Pro install into an "Enterprise" ?

I intend to install VS2008 in the VM and use it in Virtualbox when doing quick work and on native hardware when doing a lot of work.
