• Drupal 7 on Windows - File Module Problems

  Installed Drupal 7 using the Web Platform installer on Windows 2008 For some reason, the file module, when you upload a file, uses the first few letters of the filename as the unique key to store in the database, which of course causes problems very fast. I'm wondering does anybody have a workaround for this? An AJAX HTTP request terminated abnormally. Debugging information follows. • I keep getting blue screen - Windows 7 x64 (maybe ram?)

  I have +- 5yrs old pc runnig windows 7 and I've been getting blue screen recently. I had win 8 and I got a lof of erros with ram memory, so I reinstalled back to Win 7. (I have 2x 2 GB RAM) To make a better image of my errors - I get them while writing email, installing nvidia driver, sound driver, running RAM test. I got a log of my last error, could anyone tell me what is it? Should I get new RAM memories? • Headphones not working in ubuntu 12.04LTS

  So after a million warnings about not supported ubuntu OS, last night I finally upgraded to 12.04 - went somewhat smoothly (sadly) After my installation I got all excited with the exciting new look when I login, and all the new shebang, gently I installed chrome and went to youtube to check out some of my music and test flash in the process, now the sound worked awesomely, however when I plugged in my headphones, I could hear only a buzz-like sound when the base drops or there is a loud noise, maybe I didn't hear it from the headphones, but some other source. However sadly my headphones are not working, and I am a noob at fixing these stuff on Ubuntu. I've done loads of programming but when it comes to linux drivers and settings I seem to get frustrated. So I would really appreciate any help people! IN SUMMARY: My headphones are not working, my laptop's internal speakers are working awesome. To be as helpful as I can I have pasted the output from lspci -v to http://pastebin.com/VQNzDkZs I have also checked the volume levels from alsamixer and none are on mute. • Windows 8/Surface Lunch Event Summary

  Today was a big day for Microsoft with two separate launch event.  The first for Windows 8 and all of it’s hardware partners.  The second was specifically to introduce the Microsoft Windows 8 Surface tablet.  Below are some of the take-aways I got from the webcasts. Windows 8 Launch The three general area that Microsoft focused on were the release of the OS itself, the public unveiling of the Windows Store and the new devices available from its hardware partners. The release of the OS focused on the fact that it will be available at mid-night tonight for both new PCs and for upgrades.  I can’t say that this interested me that much since it was already known to most people.  I think what they did show well was how easy the OS really is to use. The Windows Store is also not a new feature to those of us who have been running the pre-release versions of Windows 8 or have owned Windows Phone 7 for the past 2 years.  What was interesting is that the Windows Store launches with more apps available than any other platforms store at their respective launch.  I think this says a lot about how Microsoft focuses on the ability of developers to create software and make it available.  The of course were sure to emphasize that the Windows Store has better monetary terms for developers than its competitors. The also showed off the fact that XBox Music streaming is available for to all Windows 8 user for free.  Couple this with the Bing suite of apps that give you news, weather, sports and finance right out of the box and I think most people will find the environment a joy to use. I think the hardware demo, while quick and furious, really show where Windows shine: CHOICE!  They made a statement that over 1000 devices have been certified for Windows 8.  They showed tablets, laptops, desktops, all-in-ones and convertibles.  Since these devices have industry standard connectors they give a much wider variety of accessories and devices that you can use with them. Steve Balmer then came on stage and tried to see how many times he could use the “magical”.  He focused on how the Windows 8 OS is designed to integrate with SkyDrive, Skype and Outlook.com.  He also enforced that they think Windows 8 is the best choice for the Enterprise when it comes to protecting data and integrating across devices including Windows Phone 8. With that we were left to wait for the second event of the day. Surface Launch The second event of the day started with kids with magnets.  Ok, they were adults, but who doesn’t like playing with magnets.  Steven Sinofsky detached and reattached the Surface keyboard repeatedly, clearly enjoying himself.  It turns out that there are 4 magnets in the cover, 2 for alignment and 2 as connectors. They then went to giving us the details on the display.  The 10.6” display is optically bonded to the case and is optimized to reduce glare.  I think this came through very well in the demonstrations. The properties of the case were also a great selling point.  The VaporMg allowed them to drop the device on stage, on purpose, and continue working.  Of course they had to bring out the skate boards made from Surface devices. “It just has to feel right” was the reason they gave for many of their design decisions from the weight and size of the device to the way the kickstand and camera work together.  While this gave you the feeling that the whole process was trial and error you could tell that a lot of science went into the specs.  This included making sure that the magnets were strong enough to hold the cover on and still have a 3 year old remove the cover without effort. I am glad that they also decided the a USB port would be part of the spec since it give so many options.  They made the point that this allows Surface to leverage over 420 million existing devices.  That works for me. The last feature that I really thought was important was the microSD port.  Begin stuck with the onboard memory has been an aggravation of mine with many of the devices in the market today. I think they did job of really getting the audience to understand why you want this platform and this particular device.  Using personal examples like creating a video of a birthday party and being in it or the fact that the device was being used to live blog the event and control the lights and presentation.  They showed very well that it was not only fun but very capable of getting real work done.  Handing out tablets to the crowd didn’t hurt either.  In the end I really wanted a Surface even though I really have no need for one on a daily basis.  Great job Microsoft! del.icio.us Tags: Windows 8,Win8,Windows 8 Luanch

• Do I use the FV function in Excel correctly?

  My task: Create a table: Calculate what the revenues of e-trading will be after five years at 15 percent interest rate if we now have 15 000 EUR. Use the FV function from the Financial Group in Excel. My resolution: =FV( 15%; 5; 0; -15000). My question: Is it correct? I know the task lacks information whether the interest rate is per month or per year. I calculate it as 'per year'. My question is orientated more on the usage of the FV function. I, for example, do not understand why '-15000' and not '15000'. Also why the third parameter has to be 0? Maybe I do it wrong. Please help me solve it! Thanks in advance.

• Using .htaccess, can you hide the true URL?

  So I have a web hotel with 1 main website http://www.myrootsite.com/ and a few websites in subdirectories, in a folder called projects. I have domain names pointing to the subdirectories, but when holding the mouse over a link in those websites the URLs are shown as: http://www.myrootsite.com/projects/mysubsite/contact.html When I'm on mysubsite.com I want them to be shown as: http://www.mysubsite.com/contact.html I spoke to support for the web hotel and the guy said try using .htaccess, but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. Thank you very much for your time! Edit: For more information My website is: http://www.example1.com/ and I also own http://www.example2.com/. All of example2.com's files are in: example1.com/projects/example2/. When you visit example2.com, you'll notice all of the URL's point towards: example1.com/projects/example2/ but I want them to point towards: example2.com/ Can this be done? I hope this is enough info for you to go on :). Edit: For w3d I go to the url mysubsite.com and the browser shows the url mysubsite.com. The services I'm using create an iframe around myrootsite.com and use the url mysubsite.com I just hate that in Firefox and Internet Explorer, holding the mouse over link show that the destination url is: myrootsite.com/projects/mysubsite/...

• Extract Certs from Apache

  Recently I've had to uninstall a single Self-Signed SSL Certificate from one of my Apache boxes, specifically for an outside party. That's not really a problem for me, since it was easy. What confuses me is how they knew I had a self-signed certificate. The domain I provided them was not related to the domain with the self-signed certificate. Does this mean Apache publicizes the Virtual hosts in the httpd.conf file? I asked the outside party what software they used to extract information from my server, and they provided this GitHub link: https://gist.github.com/4ndrej/4547029 I figured I'd ask the community first, before I attempt installing the Java program.

• DNS propagation

  I have 1 primary DNS server (ns1.mydomain.com) running on Fedora and 2 secondary ones (ns2 and ns3). DNS changes made on my web servers first goes to the primary name server and then propagates to the secondary servers. After making a DNS change on a domain on the web server, I can't see the new dns information on my ns1 when I perform: dig @ns1 A blahblah.com I then went to the master records on the names server (uses named) in the directory /var/named/run-root/var/named/masters and I see the A record has been updated appropriately. Tailing the logs /var/log/messages is not showing any errors. What could be the issue?

• How best to integrate PPA into Debian?

  I'm working with ZFS on Linux, on my Debian squeeze server. I've found a useful package in an Ubuntu PPA, apparently by one of the ZoL developers, and I would like to integrate it into my package system. However, I am really having a terrible time doing this. It seems like it would be possible if I upgraded my system to the testing branch, but I'd prefer not to do this for obvious reasons. So, what is the One True Way to do this? Or, what is a passable way to do this, i.e. one that does not involve an ice nine-like assimilation of my entire system to testing branch? Edit: Silly question. I clicked the little green "technical information about this package" on launchpad and all was revealed.

• Run Win7 Guest (raw disk) in Ubuntu (which was installed as Dual Boot on existing Win7)

  I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on top of Win 7 as a dual boot (awesome!). I'm hoping to use VirtualBox to run my original Win7 instance as a guest OS under Ubuntu. I found this existing question and followed the directions to no avail. I can get the VMDK file created but when I run it I just get a blank black screen with no additional information and Windows never loads. I see no HD activity or anything that would indicate it's loading. I used this command to create the VMDK file: VBoxManager internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename ~/.VirtualBox/Win7Native.vmdk -rawdisk /dev/sda3 It looks like everything was created correctly but I just get a blank screen when I run the VM. I do get this warning when I boot the VM: VirtualBox - Warning The virtual machine execution may run into and error condition as described below... The medium '/home/XXX/.VirtualBox/Win7Native.vmdk' has a logical size of 583GB but the file system the medium is located on can only handle up to 16GB in theory. We strongly recommend to put all your virtual disk images and the snapshot folder on a proper file system (e.g. etc3) with a sufficient size.   Backstory I inherited a bunch of code that I'd like to refactor. It is a UI application written in javascript. Current state: We have main application which consist of several UI components. And each component has entry fields, textboxes, menus, etc), like "ticket", "customer information", etc. Based on input, where the application was called from, who is the user, we enable/disable, hide, show, change titles. Unfortunately, the app grew to the point where it is really hard to scale, add new features. Main the driver (application code) calls set/unset functions of the respective components. So a lot of the stuff look like this Main app unit function1() { **call_function2()** component1.setX(true); component1.setY(true); component2.setX(false); } call_function2() { // it may repeat some of the code function1 called } and we have a lot of this in the main union. I am cleaning this mess. What is the best way to maintain the state of widgets? Please let me know if you need me to clarify.

• How to filter Varnish logs based on XID?

  I'm running into infrequent 503 errors which appear hard to pinpoint. Varnishlog is driving me mad, since I can't seem to get the information I want out of it. I'd like to see both the client- and backend-communications as seen by Varnish. I thought the XID number, which is logged on Varnish's default error page, would allow me to filter the exact request out of the logging buffer. However, no combination of varnishlog parameters gives me the output I need. The following only shows the client-side communication: varnishlog -d -c -m ReqStart:1427305652 while this only shows the resulting backend communication: varnishlog -d -b -m TxHeader:1427305652 Is there a one-liner to show the entire request?

• WordPress mod_rewrite redirect specific folders

  As a new user, I'm not allowed to post more than two hyperlinks here. So I have added a space after every http (ignore them and read as full URLs). System: Debian Etch, Apache 2.2 I have a WordPress instance with multiple blogs. I would like to redirect some of the folders based on the year and month, while leaving other folders go to the actual locations. Example: I have archives for a few years, like 2010, 2011 and 2012: http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2010/02 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2011/01 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2012/01 I would like to redirect all 2010 and 2011 posts to another blog with the same folder structure: http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myotherblog/2010/02 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myotherblog/2011/01 and so on. I would like to have 2012 and beyond to go to the actual site (http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2012/01). I tried mod_rewrite with the following, one rule at a time to test redirection for just one year (and to expand later for other years), and none of them worked! * RewriteEngine is already on since there are some default WordPress rewrites. * RewriteBase is set to http://mydomain.com/wordpress/ . * I put my rule before all the other default WordPress rules are processed. Didn't work solution #1 RedirectMatch 301 /myblog/2010/(.*) /myotherblog/2010/$1 Didn't work solution #2 RewriteRule /myblog/2010/(.*) http ://mydomain.com/myotherblog/2010/$1 [R=301] Didn't work solution #3 RedirectPermanent /myblog/2010/(.*) http ://mydomain.com/myotherblog/2010/$1 I've also tried the above rules with and without a fully qualified URL for the new location. The rewrite log, with log level set to 9, did not provide any useful information. It shows that it looks at the pattern specified against the URL (as mentioned in the rule), but finally what happens is a passthrough to http ://mydomain.com/myblog/ for all URLs or a 500 Internal Server Error. Any ideas on where I could be going wrong or any alternative solutions?

• Tracking form abandonment

  I'm looking for a decent way to track form abandonment. Ideally, I would like to see how many people start filling out a form but do not complete it, as well as the last field that was filled out. The website is a fairly large Wordpress site with quite a few forms. Some of these forms are to register for events, some are for donations, some are for information requests. My first attempt at this was adding a generic jquery that bound functions to all forms on the site. When a form element was blurred, I would trigger a Google Analytics event with the name of the form, the name of the field, and whether or not it was filled. I expected to be able to go to the Event Flow section in Google Analytics and see the flow of these form events, however since there are so many forms and other events occurring on the website, Google wouldn't let me break them out very well. The other issue was the Quform doesn't name their fields anything relevant, and it doesn't look like we can name them ourselves. This results in a lot of ugly form names that don't mean anything without cross-referencing the actual form. Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can achieve more usable form abandonment metrics in a scenario like this?

  I want to forward my root domain(yourdomain.com) to www.yourdomain.com Should I delete the A record of the root domain and then setup 301 permanent forwarding to www.yourdomain.com? I am hosting my app on heroku. So I don't really have an IP address to setup an A record. The thing is I first deleted the A record of my root domain and then forwarded it. I pinged it and here is the result - ping yourdomain.com ping: cannot resolve yourdomain.com: Unknown host Update and some more information - I am hosting a static website. And managing the DNS on cloudflare.com I added an A record for yourdomain.com - 184.168.221.51 Just an random IP.

• Mozilla Persona to the login rescue?

  A lot of website now allow us to login or create accounts via OAuth or OpenID. We can use our Facebook, Twitter, Google, Windows Live account and others. The problem with a lot of these is we have to have allow the websites to then have access to our account and profile data that they shouldn't really have. Below is a Twitter authorization screen for example when signing in via Technorati. Now Technorati can follow new people, update my profile and post tweets? All I wanted to do was login to Technorati.com to comment on a post!Mozilla has just released their new solution for this called Persona. First thought is oh great another solution! But they are actually providing something a little different and better. It is based on an email address and isn't linked to anything like our personal social networks or their information. Persona only exists to help with logging in to websites. No loose strings attached.Persona is based on a new standard called BrowserID and you can read more about it here:How BrowserID Works.  The goal is to integrate BrowserID in to the browser at a deeper level so no password entry is required at all. You can tell your web browser to just auto sign in for you. I am really hoping this takes off and will look at implementing it in current projects! I would recommend researching it and lets hope it or something like it becomes a wide spread reality in the future.

• Sending a file to uCLinux

  I have a board running uClinux, and I need to send a file to it, but I'm not sure how... I have a RS232 port, and Ethernet port with an IP address at my disposal, I can telnet to the board, but uCLinux doesn't have a built in FTP client. What sort of options do I have here for transferring files from my Windows 7 (or OpenSUSE) machine(s) to this board? EDIT I just found I have a TFTP server on it: # tftp BusyBox v0.60.5 (2012.07.09-14:05+0000) multi-call binary Usage: tftp [OPTION]... HOST [PORT] But I can't find any good information on how to use TFTP. And looking around google I'm seeing it's good for loading binary images, so I'm assume anything could be sent, but I'm not sure.

• How to remove all associated files and configuration settings of an app installed through 'force architecture' command

  A few weeks ago I installed a 32 bit .deb file through the 'force architecture' command (on my 64bit notebook), however the procedure was unsuccessful and I used the apt-get purgecommand to uninstall the app. It seems there are some leftovers of the app I uninstalled which has now broken system update. Synaptic recommended a sudo apt-get install -fwhich I did in the terminal with this initial response: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required: libntfs10 Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. • Can't set up Usermin correctly to allow users to login outside of local network, what am I missing?

  I'm fairly new at creating a server, but the biggest problem I am currently having at the moment is getting Usermin set up to be accessible from outside the LAN. I talked to other people that use it and was told that all I need to do is type the url:20000 to access the login screen, but that doesn't work. I have also tried the ip:20000 and that doesn't lead to anything. Instead I get the error message: Error - Bad Request This web server is running in SSL mode. Try the URL https://hostname:10000/ instead. (where hostname is my server's hostname) I know it must be a configuration issue, but I have checked all my settings and as far as I can tell I don't have the ports blocked anywhere. I have the correct ports forwarded on my router and my server firewall doesn't have the port block either. Is there anything I am missing? Any help would be appreciated and I will add more information upon request. Thank You.

• Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons.
