  • computing matting Laplacian matrix of an Image

    - by ajith
    hi everyone, i need to compute Laplacian Matrix-L for an image(nXn) in opencv...computing goes as follows.......... dij - 1/|wk|{[1+1/(e/|wk|+s2)][(Ii-µk)*(Ij -µk)]}.... for all(i,j)?wk,summing over k yields (i,j)th element of L. where Here dij is the Kronecker delta,µk and s2k are the mean & variance of intensities in the window wk around k,and |wk| is the number of pixels in this window.wk is 3X3 window... here am not clear about 2 things... 1.what ll be the size of L?nXn or (nXn)X(nXn)?? 2.how to select Ii and Ij separately in 2D image?

  • Selecting by observation in R table

    - by Stedy
    I was working through the Rosetta Code example of the knapsack problem in R and I came up with four solutions. What is the best way to output only one of the solutions based on the observation number give in the table? > values[values$value==max(values$value),] I II III value weight volume 2067 9 0 11 54500 25 25 2119 6 5 11 54500 25 25 2171 3 10 11 54500 25 25 2223 0 15 11 54500 25 25 My initial idea was to save this output to a new variable, then query the new variable such as: > newvariable <- values[values$value==max(values$value),] > newvariable2 <- newvariable[2,] > newvariable2 I II III value weight volume 2119 6 5 11 54500 25 25 This gives me the desired output but is there a cleaner way to do it?

  • HTTP Builder/Groovy - get source text _and_ XmlSlurper output?

    - by Misha Koshelev
    Dear All: I am reading here: http://groovy.codehaus.org/modules/http-builder/doc/get.html I seem to be able to get i) XMLSlurper output as parsed by NekoHTML using: def http = new HTTPBuilder('http://www.google.com') def html = http.get( path : '/search', query : [q:'Groovy'] ) ii) Raw text using: http.get( path : '/search', contentType : TEXT, query : [q:'Groovy'] ) { resp, reader -> println "response status: ${resp.statusLine}" println 'Headers: -----------' resp.headers.each { h -> println " ${h.name} : ${h.value}" } println 'Response data: -----' System.out << reader println '\n--------------------' } I am having some trouble and would like to get BOTH (i) and (ii) to debug my XmlSlurper code on the actual html I am getting. Any suggestions how I might go about doing this? I can easily instantiate an XmlSlurper object with the relevant string using the parseString(string) method or the parse(reader) method, but I cannot seem to get the Neko processing step correct. Any hints? Thank you! Misha

  • Cleaning up code - flatten a nested hash structure

    - by knorv
    The following Perl sub flattens a nested hash structure: sub flatten { my $hashref = shift; my %hash; my %i = %{$hashref}; foreach my $ii (keys(%i)) { my %j = %{$i{$ii}}; foreach my $jj (keys(%j)) { my %k = %{$j{$jj}}; foreach my $kk (keys(%k)) { my $value = $k{$kk}; $hash{$kk} = $value; } } } return %hash; } While the code works it is not very readable or clean. My question is two-fold: In what ways does it not correspond to modern Perl best practices? How would you clean it up?

  • Load Balancing and Failover for Read-Only PostgreSQL Database

    - by Eric J.
    Scenario Multiple application servers host web services written in Java, running in SpringSource dm Server. To implement a new requirement, they will need to query a read-only PostgreSQL database. Issue To support redundancy, at least two PostgreSQL instances will be running. Access to PostgreSQL must be load balanced and must auto-fail over to currently running instances if an instance should go down. Auto-discovery of newly running instances is desirable but not required. Research I have reviewed the official PostgreSQL documentation on this issue. However, that focuses on the more general case of read/write access to the database. Top google results tend to lead to older newsgroup messages or dead projects such as Sequoia or DB Balancer, as well as one active project PG Pool II Question What are your real-world experiences with PG Pool II? What other simple and reliable alternatives are available?

  • Strange Map Reduce Behavior in CouchDB. Rereduce?

    - by Tony
    I have a mapreduce issue with couchdb (both functions shown below): when I run it with grouplevel = 2 (exact) I get accurate output: {"rows":[ {"key":["2011-01-11","staff-1"],"value":{"total":895.72,"count":2,"services":6,"services_ignored":6,"services_liked":0,"services_disliked":0,"services_disliked_avg":0,"Revise":{"total":275.72,"count":1},"Review":{"total":620,"count":1}}}, {"key":["2011-01-11","staff-2"],"value":{"total":8461.689999999999,"count":2,"services":41,"services_ignored":37,"services_liked":4,"services_disliked":0,"services_disliked_avg":0,"Revise":{"total":4432.4,"count":1},"Review":{"total":4029.29,"count":1}}}, {"key":["2011-01-11","staff-3"],"value":{"total":2100.72,"count":1,"services":10,"services_ignored":4,"services_liked":3,"services_disliked":3,"services_disliked_avg":2.3333333333333335,"Revise":{"total":2100.72,"count":1}}}, However, changing to grouplevel=1 so the values for all the different staff keys should be all grouped by date no longer gives accurate output (notice the total is currect but all others are wrong): {"rows":[ {"key":["2011-01-11"],"value":{"total":11458.130000000001,"count":2,"services":0,"services_ignored":0,"services_liked":0,"services_disliked":0,"services_disliked_avg":0,"None":{"total":11458.130000000001,"count":2}}}, My only theory is this has something to do with rereduce, which I have not yet learned. Should I explore that option or am I missing something else here? This is the Map function: function(doc) { if(doc.doc_type == 'Feedback') { emit([doc.date.split('T')[0], doc.staff_id], doc); } } And this is the Reduce: function(keys, vals) { // sum all key points by status: total, count, services (liked, rejected, ignored) var ret = { 'total':0, 'count':0, 'services': 0, 'services_ignored': 0, 'services_liked': 0, 'services_disliked': 0, 'services_disliked_avg': 0, }; var total_disliked_score = 0; // handle status function handle_status(doc) { if(!doc.status || doc.status == '' || doc.status == undefined) { status = 'None'; } else if (doc.status == 'Declined') { status = 'Rejected'; } else { status = doc.status; } if(!ret[status]) ret[status] = {'total':0, 'count':0}; ret[status]['total'] += doc.total; ret[status]['count'] += 1; }; // handle likes / dislikes function handle_services(services) { ret.services += services.length; for(var a in services) { if (services[a].user_likes == 10) { ret.services_liked += 1; } else if (services[a].user_likes >= 1) { ret.services_disliked += 1; total_disliked_score += services[a].user_likes; if (total_disliked_score >= ret.services_disliked) { ret.services_disliked_avg = total_disliked_score / ret.services_disliked; } } else { ret.services_ignored += 1; } } } // loop thru docs for(var i in vals) { // increment the total $ ret.total += vals[i].total; ret.count += 1; // update totals and sums for the status of this route handle_status(vals[i]); // do the likes / dislikes stats if(vals[i].groups) { for(var ii in vals[i].groups) { if(vals[i].groups[ii].services) { handle_services(vals[i].groups[ii].services); } } } // handle deleted services if(vals[i].hidden_services) { if (vals[i].hidden_services) { handle_services(vals[i].hidden_services); } } } return ret; }

  • How do I move an element from an array to another array in javascript?

    - by TiansHUo
    My code is like var shapes1 = [ r.image("node.gif",190, 100, 47, 45)]; var shapes2 =[]; for (var i = 0, ii = shapes1.length; i < ii; i++) { shapes1[i].mousedown(function(e){ var temp=this.clone(); shapes1.push(temp); //now I want to remove "this" from shapes1 //and put it into shape2 //HOW?? isDrag=true; e.preventDefault(); }); } Maybe this is the wrong way to do it? I should be using a class instead, but isn't that for DOM items?

  • Facebook Hacker Cup: Power Overwhelming

    - by marcog
    A lot of people at Facebook like to play Starcraft II™. Some of them have made a custom game using the Starcraft II™ map editor. In this game, you play as the noble Protoss defending your adopted homeworld of Shakuras from a massive Zerg army. You must do as much damage to the Zerg as possible before getting overwhelmed. You can only build two types of units, shield generators and warriors. Shield generators do no damage, but your army survives for one second per shield generator that you build. Warriors do one damage every second. Your army is instantly overrun after your shield generators expire. How many shield generators and how many warriors should you build to inflict the maximum amount of damage on the Zerg before your army is overrun? Because the Protoss value bravery, if there is more than one solution you should return the one that uses the most warriors. Constraints 1 = G (cost for one shield generator) = 100 1 = W (cost for one warrior) = 100 G + W = M (available funds) = 1000000000000 (1012)

    i have an paragraph and user will search inside that and if the search term has 3 matches inside but all are in 3 different places ex World War II, or the Second World War[1] (often abbreviated WWII or WW2), was a global military conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945 which involved most of the world's nations, including all of the great powers, organised into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, with more than 100 million military personnel mobilised. In a state of "total war," the major participants placed their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities at the service of the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by significant action against civilians, including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it was the deadliest conflict in human history,[2] with over seventy million casualties. i have to search "war" so that it should display like World War II, or the Second World War[1].....In a state of "totalwar,".... some thing like this ///

  • Static member object of a class in the same class

    - by Luv
    Suppose we have a class as class Egg { static Egg e; int i; Egg(int ii):i(ii) {} Egg(const Egg &); //Prevents copy-constructor to be called public: static Egg* instance() {return &e} }; Egg Egg::e(47); This code guarantees that we cannot create any object, but could use only the static object. But how could we declare static object of the same class in the class. And also one thing more since e is a static object, and static objects can call only static member functions, so how could the constructor been called here for static object e, also its constructors are private.

  • Reading variable with double float precision from a text file with gnuplot

    - by user3636322
    I have a text file, containing data in 3 columns like below: 0.0100000000 | 0.0058077299 | -0.0000000288 0.0110000000 | 0.0075128707 | -0.0000000373 0.0120000000 | 0.0093579693 | -0.0000000465 I want to get the variables from this file in gnuplot and use them to draw graphs: What I exactly do is like below (e.g: to pick the variable from row 2 column 3): ii= 2 a_0 = system("awk '{ if (NR == " . ii . ") printf \"%f\", $3}' " .datafile) a_0 = a_0+0. but what is written as a_0 is zero! How can I increase the precision to get the exact value?

  • bandwidth throttling C linux

    - by bob moch
    hi im currently creating a function to create a sleep time i can pause between packets for my port scanner im creating for personal/educational use for my home network. what im currently doing is opening /proc/net/dev and reading the 9th set of digits for the eth0 interface to find out the current packets being set and then reading it again and doing some math to figure out a delay to sleep between sending a packet to a port to identify it and fingerprint it. my problem is that no matter what throttle % i use it always seems to send the same rate of packets. i think its mainly my way of mathematically creating my sleep delay. edit:: dont mind the function declaration and the struct stuff all im doing is spawning this function in a thread and passing a pointer to a struct to the function, recreating the struct locally and then freeing the passed structs memory. void *bandwidthmonitor_cmd(void *param) { char cmdline[1024], *bytedata[19]; int i = 0, ii = 0; long long prevbytes = 0, currentbytes = 0, elapsedbytes = 0, byteusage = 0, maxthrottle = 0; command_struct bandwidth = *((command_struct *)param); free(param); //printf("speed: %d\n throttle: %d\n\n", UPLOAD_SPEED, bandwidth.throttle); maxthrottle = UPLOAD_SPEED * bandwidth.throttle / 100; //printf("max throttle:%lld\n", maxthrottle); FILE *f = fopen("/proc/net/dev", "r"); if(f != NULL) { while(1) { while(fgets(cmdline, sizeof(cmdline), f) != NULL) { cmdline[strlen(cmdline)] = '\0'; if(strncmp(cmdline, " eth0", 6) == 0) { bytedata[0] = strtok(cmdline, " "); while(bytedata[i] != NULL) { i++; bytedata[i] = strtok(NULL, " "); } bytedata[i + 1] = '\0'; currentbytes = atoi(bytedata[9]); } } i = 0; rewind(f); elapsedbytes = currentbytes - prevbytes; prevbytes = currentbytes; byteusage = 8 * (elapsedbytes / 1024); //printf("usage:%lld\n",byteusage); if(ii & 0x40) { SLEEP += (maxthrottle - byteusage) * -1.1;//-2.5; if(SLEEP < 0){ SLEEP = 0; } //printf("sleep:%d\n", SLEEP); } usleep(25000); ii++; } } return NULL; } SLEEP and UPLOAD_SPEED are global variables and UPLOAD_SPEED is in kb/s and generated via a speedtest function that gets the upload speed of my computer. this function is running inside a POSIX thread updating SLEEP which my threads doing the socket work grab to sleep by after every packet. as testing instead of only doing the ports i want to check i make it do all the ports over and over again so i can run dstat on a machine to check bandwidth and no matter what bandwidth.throttle is set to it always seems to generate the same amount of bandwidth to the dstat machine. the way i calculate how much i "should" throttle by is by finding the maximum throttle speed which is defined as maxthrottle = upload_speed * throttle / 100; for example if my upload speed was 1000kb/s and my throttle was 90 (90%) my max throttle would be 900kb/s from there it would find the current bytes sent from /proc/net/dev and then find my sleep time via incrementing or decrementing it via sleep += (maxthrottle - bytesysed) * -1.1; this should in theory increase or decrease the sleep time based on how many bytes used there are. the if(ii & 0x40) statement is just for some moderation control. it makes it so it only sets sleep to a new time every 30-40 iterations. final notes: the main problem is that the sleep timer does not seem to modify the speed of packets being set. or maybe its just my implementation because on a freshly restarted machine where /proc/net/dev has low numbers of bytes sent it seems to raise the sleep timer accordingly on my 60kb/s upload machine (ex if i set the throttle to 2 it will incline the sleep timer until network bandwidth out reaches the max bandwidth threshold, but when i try running it on a server which as been online forever it doesnt seem to work as nicely if at all. if anyone can suggest a new method of monitoring the network to adjust a sleep delay then let me know or if anyone sees a flaw in my code. thank you.

  • Improving TCP performance over a gigabit network with lots of connections and high traffic of small packets

    - by MinimeDJ
    I’m trying to improve my TCP throughput over a “gigabit network with lots of connections and high traffic of small packets”. My server OS is Ubuntu 11.10 Server 64bit. There are about 50.000 (and growing) clients connected to my server through TCP Sockets (all on the same port). 95% of of my packets have size of 1-150 bytes (TCP header and payload). The rest 5% vary from 150 up to 4096+ bytes. With the config below my server can handle traffic up to 30 Mbps (full duplex). Can you please advice best practice to tune OS for my needs? • Don’t miss rare Venus transit across Sun on June 5th. Once in a life time event.

    - by Gopinath
    Space lovers here is a rare event you don’t want to miss. On June 5th or 6th of 2012,depending on which part of the globe you live, the planet Venus will pass across Sun and it will not happen again until 2117. During the six hour long spectacular transit you can see the shadow of Venus cross Sun. The transit of Venus occurs in pairs eight years apart, with the previous one taking place in 2004. The next pair of transits occurs after 105.5 & 121.5 years later. The best place to watch the event would be a planetarium nearby with telescope facility. If not you watch it directly but must protect your eyes at all times with proper solar filters. Where can we see the transit? The transit of Venus is going to be clearly visible in Europe, Asia, United States and some part of Australia. Americans will be able to see transit in the evening of Tuesday, June 5, 2012. Eurasians and Africans can see the transit in the morning of June 6, 2012. At what time the event occurs? The principal events occurring during a transit are conveniently characterized by contacts, analogous to the contacts of an annular solar eclipse. The transit begins with contact I, the instant the planet’s disk is externally tangent to the Sun. Shortly after contact I, the planet can be seen as a small notch along the solar limb. The entire disk of the planet is first seen at contact II when the planet is internally tangent to the Sun. Over the course of several hours, the silhouetted planet slowly traverses the solar disk. At contact III, the planet reaches the opposite limb and once again is internally tangent to the Sun. Finally, the transit ends at contact IV when the planet’s limb is externally tangent to the Sun. • ¿Como puedo instalar Age of Mythology en Ubuntu? - How I can install Age of Mythology on Ubuntu?

    - by edgarsalguero93
English: I have a problem trying to install Age of Mythology Gold Edition (v 1.03). At the beginning of the Wine (1.3.28) on my Ubuntu 11.10, and after entering the serial and click Next, I get an error "Unable to load pidgen.dll" and return to the previous window. In Configure Wine and in the Libraries tab I added the DLL that calls me but nothing has changed. I tried everything to be installed but not working. I have also tried to install in a virtual machine with VMware Workstation 8.0.1 Microsoft Windows XP SP3 and I get a compatibility error with video card: "Video Card 0: VMware SVGA II vmx_fb.dll Vendor (0x15AD) Device (0x405) "and closes the Age of Mythology. I think the solution in this case would increase the amount of video available to the VMware virtual machine or a driver for this card, but not how to do that. Or maybe someone knows the way that my video card that has my computer is also used for VMware or earmark part of the video memory to the virtual machine. I searched several sites, but none solved my problem. Please, if someone already found the answer, to answer this question. I also apologize if the translation is not well understood. I used the Google translator. Thanks and greetings from Latin America

  • Plan Caching and Query Memory Part I – When not to use stored procedure or other plan caching mechanisms like sp_executesql or prepared statement

    - by sqlworkshops
      The most common performance mistake SQL Server developers make: SQL Server estimates memory requirement for queries at compilation time. This mechanism is fine for dynamic queries that need memory, but not for queries that cache the plan. With dynamic queries the plan is not reused for different set of parameters values / predicates and hence different amount of memory can be estimated based on different set of parameter values / predicates. Common memory allocating queries are that perform Sort and do Hash Match operations like Hash Join or Hash Aggregation or Hash Union. This article covers Sort with examples. It is recommended to read Plan Caching and Query Memory Part II after this article which covers Hash Match operations.   When the plan is cached by using stored procedure or other plan caching mechanisms like sp_executesql or prepared statement, SQL Server estimates memory requirement based on first set of execution parameters. Later when the same stored procedure is called with different set of parameter values, the same amount of memory is used to execute the stored procedure. This might lead to underestimation / overestimation of memory on plan reuse, overestimation of memory might not be a noticeable issue for Sort operations, but underestimation of memory will lead to spill over tempdb resulting in poor performance.   This article covers underestimation / overestimation of memory for Sort. Plan Caching and Query Memory Part II covers underestimation / overestimation for Hash Match operation. It is important to note that underestimation of memory for Sort and Hash Match operations lead to spill over tempdb and hence negatively impact performance. Overestimation of memory affects the memory needs of other concurrently executing queries. In addition, it is important to note, with Hash Match operations, overestimation of memory can actually lead to poor performance.   To read additional articles I wrote click here.   In most cases it is cheaper to pay for the compilation cost of dynamic queries than huge cost for spill over tempdb, unless memory requirement for a stored procedure does not change significantly based on predicates.   The best way to learn is to practice. To create the below tables and reproduce the behavior, join the mailing list by using this link: www.sqlworkshops.com/ml and I will send you the table creation script. Most of these concepts are also covered in our webcasts: www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts   Enough theory, let’s see an example where we sort initially 1 month of data and then use the stored procedure to sort 6 months of data.   Let’s create a stored procedure that sorts customers by name within certain date range.   --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com create proc CustomersByCreationDate @CreationDateFrom datetime, @CreationDateTo datetime as begin       declare @CustomerID int, @CustomerName varchar(48), @CreationDate datetime       select @CustomerName = c.CustomerName, @CreationDate = c.CreationDate from Customers c             where c.CreationDate between @CreationDateFrom and @CreationDateTo             order by c.CustomerName       option (maxdop 1)       end go Let’s execute the stored procedure initially with 1 month date range.   set statistics time on go --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-01-31' go The stored procedure took 48 ms to complete.     The stored procedure was granted 6656 KB based on 43199.9 rows being estimated.       The estimated number of rows, 43199.9 is similar to actual number of rows 43200 and hence the memory estimation should be ok.       There was no Sort Warnings in SQL Profiler.      Now let’s execute the stored procedure with 6 month date range. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-06-30' go The stored procedure took 679 ms to complete.      The stored procedure was granted 6656 KB based on 43199.9 rows being estimated.      The estimated number of rows, 43199.9 is way different from the actual number of rows 259200 because the estimation is based on the first set of parameter value supplied to the stored procedure which is 1 month in our case. This underestimation will lead to sort spill over tempdb, resulting in poor performance.      There was Sort Warnings in SQL Profiler.    To monitor the amount of data written and read from tempdb, one can execute select num_of_bytes_written, num_of_bytes_read from sys.dm_io_virtual_file_stats(2, NULL) before and after the stored procedure execution, for additional information refer to the webcast: www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts.     Let’s recompile the stored procedure and then let’s first execute the stored procedure with 6 month date range.  In a production instance it is not advisable to use sp_recompile instead one should use DBCC FREEPROCCACHE (plan_handle). This is due to locking issues involved with sp_recompile, refer to our webcasts for further details.   exec sp_recompile CustomersByCreationDate go --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-06-30' go Now the stored procedure took only 294 ms instead of 679 ms.    The stored procedure was granted 26832 KB of memory.      The estimated number of rows, 259200 is similar to actual number of rows of 259200. Better performance of this stored procedure is due to better estimation of memory and avoiding sort spill over tempdb.      There was no Sort Warnings in SQL Profiler.       Now let’s execute the stored procedure with 1 month date range.   --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-01-31' go The stored procedure took 49 ms to complete, similar to our very first stored procedure execution.     This stored procedure was granted more memory (26832 KB) than necessary memory (6656 KB) based on 6 months of data estimation (259200 rows) instead of 1 month of data estimation (43199.9 rows). This is because the estimation is based on the first set of parameter value supplied to the stored procedure which is 6 months in this case. This overestimation did not affect performance, but it might affect performance of other concurrent queries requiring memory and hence overestimation is not recommended. This overestimation might affect performance Hash Match operations, refer to article Plan Caching and Query Memory Part II for further details.    Let’s recompile the stored procedure and then let’s first execute the stored procedure with 2 day date range. exec sp_recompile CustomersByCreationDate go --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-01-02' go The stored procedure took 1 ms.      The stored procedure was granted 1024 KB based on 1440 rows being estimated.      There was no Sort Warnings in SQL Profiler.      Now let’s execute the stored procedure with 6 month date range. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-06-30' go   The stored procedure took 955 ms to complete, way higher than 679 ms or 294ms we noticed before.      The stored procedure was granted 1024 KB based on 1440 rows being estimated. But we noticed in the past this stored procedure with 6 month date range needed 26832 KB of memory to execute optimally without spill over tempdb. This is clear underestimation of memory and the reason for the very poor performance.      There was Sort Warnings in SQL Profiler. Unlike before this was a Multiple pass sort instead of Single pass sort. This occurs when granted memory is too low.      Intermediate Summary: This issue can be avoided by not caching the plan for memory allocating queries. Other possibility is to use recompile hint or optimize for hint to allocate memory for predefined date range.   Let’s recreate the stored procedure with recompile hint. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com drop proc CustomersByCreationDate go create proc CustomersByCreationDate @CreationDateFrom datetime, @CreationDateTo datetime as begin       declare @CustomerID int, @CustomerName varchar(48), @CreationDate datetime       select @CustomerName = c.CustomerName, @CreationDate = c.CreationDate from Customers c             where c.CreationDate between @CreationDateFrom and @CreationDateTo             order by c.CustomerName       option (maxdop 1, recompile)       end go Let’s execute the stored procedure initially with 1 month date range and then with 6 month date range. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-01-30' exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-06-30' go The stored procedure took 48ms and 291 ms in line with previous optimal execution times.      The stored procedure with 1 month date range has good estimation like before.      The stored procedure with 6 month date range also has good estimation and memory grant like before because the query was recompiled with current set of parameter values.      The compilation time and compilation CPU of 1 ms is not expensive in this case compared to the performance benefit.     Let’s recreate the stored procedure with optimize for hint of 6 month date range.   --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com drop proc CustomersByCreationDate go create proc CustomersByCreationDate @CreationDateFrom datetime, @CreationDateTo datetime as begin       declare @CustomerID int, @CustomerName varchar(48), @CreationDate datetime       select @CustomerName = c.CustomerName, @CreationDate = c.CreationDate from Customers c             where c.CreationDate between @CreationDateFrom and @CreationDateTo             order by c.CustomerName       option (maxdop 1, optimize for (@CreationDateFrom = '2001-01-01', @CreationDateTo ='2001-06-30'))       end go Let’s execute the stored procedure initially with 1 month date range and then with 6 month date range. The stored procedure with 1 month date range has overestimation of rows and memory. This is because we provided hint to optimize for 6 months of data.      The stored procedure with 6 month date range has good estimation and memory grant because we provided hint to optimize for 6 months of data.       Let’s execute the stored procedure with 12 month date range using the currently cashed plan for 6 month date range. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByCreationDate '2001-01-01', '2001-12-31' go The stored procedure took 1138 ms to complete.      2592000 rows were estimated based on optimize for hint value for 6 month date range. Actual number of rows is 524160 due to 12 month date range.      The stored procedure was granted enough memory to sort 6 month date range and not 12 month date range, so there will be spill over tempdb.      There was Sort Warnings in SQL Profiler.      As we see above, optimize for hint cannot guarantee enough memory and optimal performance compared to recompile hint. Summary: Cached plan might lead to underestimation or overestimation of memory because the memory is estimated based on first set of execution parameters. It is recommended not to cache the plan if the amount of memory required to execute the stored procedure has a wide range of possibilities. One can mitigate this by using recompile hint, but that will lead to compilation overhead. However, in most cases it might be ok to pay for compilation rather than spilling sort over tempdb which could be very expensive compared to compilation cost. The other possibility is to use optimize for hint, but in case one sorts more data than hinted by optimize for hint, this will still lead to spill. On the other side there is also the possibility of overestimation leading to unnecessary memory issues for other concurrently executing queries. In case of Hash Match operations, this overestimation of memory might lead to poor performance. When the values used in optimize for hint are archived from the database, the estimation will be wrong leading to worst performance, so one has to exercise caution before using optimize for hint, recompile hint is better in this case. • Libvirt-php Creating Domain

    - by Alee
    Could you tell me how to create a new domain? From PHP API Reference guide: http://libvirt.org/php/api-reference.html I have seen these functions: (i) libvirt_image_create($conn, $name, $size, $format) (ii) libvirt_domain_new($conn, $name, $arch, $memMB, $maxmemMB, $vcpus, $iso_image, $disks, $networks, $flags) (iii) libvirt_domain_create($res) (iv) libvirt_domain_create_xml($conn, $xml) The problem I am facing is that i dont know the steps to create a new domain. Either I have to create a new image first using libvirt_image_create .... or something else.

  • DNS client configuration steps in Oracle Solaris 11

    - by Gurubalan
    This guide covers Quick how to configure DNS client on Solaris 11. DNS client configuration in Solaris 11 is based on SMF service rather than file based. When you configure a system as DNS client, you will be performing the following two configurations. I. DNS client setup II. Configure Name service switch to use DNS I. DNS client setup 1. Configure using SMF service network/dns/client # svccfg -s network/dns/clientsvc:/network/dns/client> setprop config/search = astring: ("test.com" "service.test.com")svc:/network/dns/client> setprop config/nameserver = net_address: (192.168.10.10 192.168.10.11)svc:/network/dns/client> exit 2.  Enable the DNS client service (when you configure it for the first time) #svccfg enable -r dns/client 3. Restart/Refresh DNS client service (It is done when there is any update to the configuration) #svccfg refresh dns/client #svccfg restart dns/client 4. Verify /etc/resolv.conf if it is updated with the changes. # more /etc/resolv.conf ## _AUTOGENERATED_FROM_SMF_V1_## WARNING: THIS FILE GENERATED FROM SMF DATA.#   DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE.  EDITS WILL BE LOST.# See resolv.conf(4) for details.search               test.com service.test.comnameserver      192.168.10.10nameserver      192.168.10.11 --- II.  Configuring Name service switch to use DNS 1.
