• Writing a search engine

  Hello all, The title might be a bit misleading, but I couldn't figure out a better title. I'm writing a simple search engine which will search on several sites for the specific domain. To be concrete: I'm writing a search engine for hardstyle livesets/aftermovies/tracks. To do I will search on the sites who provide livesets, tracks, and such. The problem here is speed, I need to pass the search query to 5-7 sites, get the results and then use my own algorithm to display the results in a sorted order. I could just "multithread" it, but it's easier said then done so I have a few questions. What would be the best solution to this problem? Should I just multithread/process this application, so I'm going to get a bit of speed-up? Are there any other solutions or I am doing something really wrong? Thanks, William van Doorn

• GKPeerStateAvailable for non existing peers?

  Hi, used this website for the long time to find answers, now need to ask on myself! :) I have implemented multi player for my game using GKSession and client/server approach, not using peer picker (up to 4 player allowed). I have one big problem which I can't find solution for. If you disconnect/reconnect server peer quickly enough, client peer will "remember" that host and will show it in the list of all available peers permanently, only turning wifi/bluetooth off resets this. So if I do this 5 times in a row, my client will show 5 available hosts with the same name! Anyone had experience with this? Any idea of workarounds? I should note that requirements for my game is iPhone SDK 3.0 for Bluetooth and 3.1 for Wifi as GKSession supports both now.

• Need help making row of buttons consistent

  I'm making my first website, and I'm trying to make variable-sized buttons so they'll render correctly on low resolution (read: mobile) browsers. Currently I just have the usual rollover image solution (185 pixels wide by 37 tall if anybody cares), but when I preview the site in low resolution it looks, predictably enough, like complete crap (more specifically they don't have room so they arrange vertically instead of horizontally and take up a huge amount of screen real estate). Semi-related, is there a way to overlay text on a button without saving separate images, each with the correct text? Just using a single template for buttons and then deciding what text goes on it as it's needed? tl;dr: I'm trying to get a horizontal lineup of buttons for navigating my website, but I'm a noob and I can't do it right without your generous assistance.

• C# DLL reference changes version and becomes unloadable (Plugin-system)

  I will try to keep this as simple as possible. I have a rather simple plugin system that has run into a problem. I have 2 assemblies: Host.exe Plugin.dll Plugin.dll references Host.exe (which contains interfaces and classes that Plugin.dll implement and use). At runtime, Host.exe loads Plugin.dll through reflection and this works great. Except when Host.exe updates and gets a new version number. Then I get an error once I try to load Plugin.dll, saying that Host.exe (with the old version number) can't be found. This means I have to rebuild all plugins every time Host.exe changes build number. Anyone got a solution to this?

• Respecting EXIF orientation when displaying iPhone photos on the web

  I am developing an iPhone camera app that uploads an image to Amazon S3 and that image is displayed on a website. When the iPhone takes a picture, it always saves the photo in an upright orientation, while the orientation used to correctly view the photo is saved in the image's EXIF data. So if I take a photo with the iPhone and open it in FireFox without processing the EXIF data, the image could be sideways or upside down. My problem is that I don't know how to display the photo in it's correct orientation on the website. My current solution is to rotate the photo in the iPhone app, but I'd rather not do that. Is there anyway to respect the EXIF data when displaying on the web without pre-processing the image?

• How to work with XAML editor in Visual Studio 2010?

  I've worked with Visual Studio 2008 and editing XAML was really painful because the designer reloaded very slowly. Now I have installed Visual Studio 2010 and it seems to me that the XAML editor + Designer haven't changed much. For example in order to force designer to change a color in my control I have to close the xaml file and open it again. Is it just my problem? I've tried this solution: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/859335/visual-studio-2008-xaml-editor-not-working-disappeared but it didn't help. Are there any better tools for Visual Studio to edit XAML? Thanks!

  am currently reading a book, which has explanation of making a social website. half way through i noticed that the images of the solution explorer given in the text, indicate that windowsformapplication[PROJECT] has been used instead of WebForms[create new website]! there are no webforms? how would the end result be a site? what is happening here?? note:- i have always made websites which needs hosting and be accessible from other computers using webforms[create new website] which has web.config file app_data etc..... please help thank you.

  Yes, I know this subject has been covered before (here, here, here, here), but AFAIK, all solutions save one choke on a list like this: L = [[[1, 2, 3], [4, 5]], 6] where the desired output is [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] or perhaps even better, an iterator. The only solution I saw that works for an arbitrary nesting is from @Alabaster Codify here: def flatten(x): result = [] for el in x: if hasattr(el, "__iter__") and not isinstance(el, basestring): result.extend(flatten(el)) else: result.append(el) return result flatten(L) So to my question: is this the best model? This question is independent of the nature of the application, desktop, mobile or browser based. Let's assume you are not able to get region information from another source and you have to choose one language as the default one. The question does apply as well for more case including: * pt-pt and pt-br * en-us and en-gb * fr-fr and fr-CA * zh-cn, zh-tw, .... - in fact in this case I know that zh can be used as predominant language for Simplified Chinese where full code is zh-hans. But problem is that the time interval (NSTime Interval)started first time while running game is still continuing. For example the time interval of my touch when I first started game is 3.0 seconds.   Quoting from the cakephp Book (ver 1.3): Note that only fields of the model you are directly doing find on will be translated. Models attached via associations won't be translated because triggering callbacks on associated models is currently not supported. Has anyone come up with a solution for this??? If not could you give me some pointers concerning the following simple scenario. I have 2 models: Project, Category. Project HABTM Category I have properly set up i18n table and I have a few entries in the db, all translated. When I retrieve a project it does retrieve the translation but not the translated category because as it says in the cakephp book models attached via associations won't be translated. Any help would be appreciated

• Authentication for SaaS

  What would be recommended as an authentication solution for a Software-as-a-service product? Specifically, my product would have clients that would typically have low information technology skills, potentially not even having an IT department within their organization. I would still like to have my application authenticate against their internal directory service (eDirectory, Active Directory, etc.). I don't want them, however, to have to open/forward ports (for instance, opening up port 636 so I can do LDAPS binds directly to their directory service). One idea I had was to have an application installed on a server within their organization's network that would backconnect to my service. This would be a persistant socket. When I need to authenticate a user, I send the credentials via the socket (encrypted) - the application then performs a bind/whatever to authenticate against the directory service and replies with OK/FAIL. What would you suggest? My goal here is to essentially have the client install an application within their network, with very little configuration or intervention.

  Hi, I have a desktop application that needs to upload/download images to/from service computer over TCP Protocol. At first, I stored images in file system, but I need to in MS SQL DB to compare which solution is better. Number of images is over half a million. I don't know yet will there be any limitation on size of a photo. If you have done smth like that, please, write what your opinion upon this question. Which one is faster, more safe? Which of them works better with this number of photos? If I'll store on DB, do I need to store images apart from all other tables which I use for my application and which type works better - image or varbinary on DB?..and so on. Thank you.

  I have an application that I want to link to excel. I have no preference which control is used as long as I can copy the data or control, and paste link into excel. When the data changes in my application, I want the cell to change in excel. I have a client that claims it is possible and he has seen it, but has no proof and may be confused. I have searched the internet and have come up with a number of half-solutions, and people who want the opposite of what I want. Does anyone know the full solution?

• Photo uploading via email

  I'd like to be able to upload photos via email, which I've seen (and used) on eat.ly and meetups.jquery.com but I haven't been able to work out how to do this, does anyone have a solution? Essentially I believe the process should be something like this: 1) user adds picture to email on mobile device then send to a specific email address, say '[email protected]' 2) email server, cron job or something else looks at the senders address and tells it to add the attachement to that account 3) photo shows up on users profile page I run Apache servers, with MySQL, PHP, and a JQuery framework. I have email servers running Courier, and I missing anything?

• Why do I not get the correct answer for Euler 56 in J?

  I've solved 84 of the Project Euler problems, mostly in Haskell. I am now going back and trying to solve in J some of those I already solved in Haskell, as an exercise in learning J. Currently, I am trying to solve Problem 56. Let me stress that I already know what the right answer is, since I've already solved it in Haskell. It's a very easy, trivial problem. I will not give the answer here. Here is my solution in J: digits =: ("."0)":"0 eachDigit =: adverb : 'u@:digits"0' NB. I use this so often I made it an adverb. cartesian =: adverb : '((#~ #) u ($~ ([:*~#)))' >./ +/ eachDigit x: ^ cartesian : i. 99 This produces a number less than the desired result. In other words, it's wrong somehow. Any J-ers out there know why? I'm baffled, since it's pretty straightforward and totally brute force.

  I am having trouble explaining/understanding the following phenomenon: To test fftw3 i am using the 2d poisson test case: laplacian(f(x,y)) = - g(x,y) with periodic boundary conditions. After applying the fourier transform to the equation we obtain : F(kx,ky) = G(kx,ky) /(kx² + ky²) (1) if i take g(x,y) = sin (x) + sin(y) , (x,y) \in [0,2 \pi] i have immediately f(x,y) = g(x,y) which is what i am trying to obtain with the fft : i compute G from g with a forward Fourier transform From this i can compute the Fourier transform of f with (1). Finally, i compute f with the backward Fourier transform (without forgetting to normalize by 1/(nx*ny)). In practice, the results are pretty bad? (For instance, the amplitude for N = 256 is twice the amplitude obtained with N = 512) Even worse, if i try g(x,y) = sin(x)*sin(y) , the curve has not even the same form of the solution. • .Net with single .exe without .NET Framework installation

  I wrote my simple desktop program in C#. I am reluctant to distribute it on the internet because i am not sure if users will go through pain of installing the .Net Framework. My target users are non-tech savvy users. I am very familiar with MFC and I probably can write this program in MFC in a month. MFC is nice because I don't have to worry about distributing other components. It will be one nice single executable. So my real question is this: Is it possible to write .Net app without worrying about distributing .Net Framework? • WebSphere MQ/MQSeries - Possible to send a message to multiple queues with single call?

  I'm queuing messages to a WebSphere MQ queue (NB: A point-to-point queue -- not a topic) using a stored procedure in my Oracle database. Is there a way to publish each message to multiple queues with a single call? What I would like is to find a solution that would incur zero additional latency on my database compared to sending the message to a single queue. Solutions that involve changing my WebSphere MQ settings are certainly welcome! What I had in mind was somehow creating a "clone" queue that got all the same messages as the original one, but I've been unable to locate anything like this in the documentation. Thanks, Jeff

  I went to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 launch event in Minneapolis yesterday and was slightly surprised by how much they were trotting out SharePoint and improved SharePoint development in Visual Studio 2010. SharePoint is something I've largely ignored over the years as a web developer and solution architect on a small development team. I was always under the impression that SharePoint was used mostly for intranets in large corporations, and that if you were developing for SharePoint, it meant that a corporate decision had been made to use it and you as a developer probably had few (if any) options. I realize this assumption is probably incorrect. So, what are the "cool" uses for SharePoint? What unique business problems have you solved using it? What could make a developer excited to be working on something for SharePoint?

• Mercurial setup: One central repo or several?

  My company is switching from Subversion to Mercurial. We're using .NET for our product. We have a solution with about a dozen projects that are separate modules with no dependencies on each other. We're using a central repo on a server with push/pull for our integration build. I'm trying to figure out if I should create one central repo with all the projects in it, or if I should create a separate repo for each project. One argument for separate repos is that branching the individual modules would be easier, but an argument for a single repo is easier management and workflow. I'm very new to hg and DVCS, so some guidance is greatly appreciated.

  Hi, Below is the user interface I have created to simulate LDPC coding and decoding The code sequence is decoded iteratively by passing values between the left and right nodes through the connections. The first thing it would be good to add in order to improve visualization is to add arrows to the connections in the direction of passing values. The alternative is to draw a bigger arrow at the top of the connection showing the direction. Another thing I would like to do is displaying the current mathematical operation below the connection (in this example c * H'). What I don't know how to do is displaying special characters and mathematical symbols and other kinds of text such as subscript and superscript in the figure (for example sum sign and subscript "T" instead of sign ="'" to indicate transposed matrix). I would be very thankful if anyone could point to any useful resources for the questions above or show the solution. Thank you.

• Draw a textured triangle (patch) in Matlab

  I have a triangle in (u,v) coordinates in an image. I would like to draw this triangle at 3D coordinates (X,Y,Z) texture-mapped with the triangle in the image. Here, u,v,X,Y,Z are all vectors with three elements representing the three corners of the triangle. I have a very ugly, slow and insatisfactory solution in which I (1) extract a rectangular part of the image, (2) transform it to 3D space with the transformation defined by the three points, (3) draw it with surface, and (4) finally masking out everything that is not part of the triangle with AlphaData. Surely there must be an easier way of doing this?
