• Speeding up CakePHP

  I've been a keen fan and user of CakePHP for about 2.5 years now, but the main bugbear that most fellow developers level at the framework is that it's slow, and the dispatch cycle takes too long to make it a viable solution for production environments. I'm hoping that this question will inspire people to share their tips, tricks and hacks for speeding up CakePHP performance. This is a homework question I have identified the components leading up to this line and I think that cust is a column in the customer table... I am not asking for an overall solution just a bit of encouragement if I am on the right track...

• Can I specify which VCS module or adaptor is used by a Luntbuild buiulder or schedule?

  I have luntbuild set up and working great for my project, with several different builder schedules running on trunk. Now, I just created a branch, and I want to add at least one schedule (and corresponding builder, if necessary) to build that branch (I want the branch built separately from trunk). Is this possible? Some others in my company have just created separate projects in Luntbuild for their branches, but I feel like that might not be the ideal solution. So, to reiterate, I want to build this branch continuously. If I just add a second module to the current setup, it tries to build both trunk and the branch together. I want them build separately. Thanks for any insight! EDIT: The bounty is about to end, and still no answers. I have worked around the original problem by creating a new project in LB, but I feel like there must be a better way.

• Android Activities UI Persistence

  I need to have two activities in an Android app that can be switched between each other with UI persistence as follows: Activity A launches Activity B. User triggers some UI changes in Activity B. Activity B returns to Activity A (by a call to onBackPressed() or something similar) Activity A re-launches Activity B. I would like the changes made in step 2 to be visible in step 4. I have tried using the singleInstance activity tag on Activity B to no avail. I would also prefer a more elegant solution than simply writing all object properties to a file or SQLite table. It seems that this behaviour must be easily achievable given that Android does it automatically for calls to onBackPressed() where the parent Activity's UI is saved. Any help is much appreciated.

  I am working on an online portal, where researchers can upload their research papers. One requirement is, that all PDFs are stored in PDF/A-format. As I can't rely on the users to generate PDF/A conforming documents, I need a tool to check and convert standard PDFs into PDF/A format. What is the best tool you know of? Price Quality Speed Available APIs Open-source tools would be prefered, but a search revealed none. iText can create PDF/a, but converting isn't easy to do, as you have to read every page and copy it to a new document, losing all bookmarks and annotations in this process. (At least as far as I know, if you know of an easy solution, let me know). APIs should be available for either PHP, Java or a command-line-tool should be provided. Please do not list either GUI-only or Online-only solutions.

• How to make scrolling through images as fast as Apple's Photos app

  The Goal — On an iPhone, to browse through several hundred locally-stored jpgs using a UIScrollView. The Problem — Like many others before me, I've tried implementing a scroll view based on Apple's Page Control sample code and found it lacking. The biggest issue I'm currently up against is that the sample code's architecture doesn't seem to scale. With just a few images loaded from disk, everything's fine. Once the number of images gets into the dozens, though, scrolling suffers terribly: the scrollview stutters mid-scroll with each new swipe. The only code I've toyed with that comes even close to being reasonably responsive is Three20, but even there the performance doesn't hold a candle to Photos. For now, I'm just using Three20, but a faster, custom solution would definitely be preferable.

  i am trying to write a plugin which rewrites "post_link", "page_link", "category_link", "tag_link" with an action hook on wordpress. it's similar to this: add_action("post_link", "the_rewrite_function"); function the_rewrite_function($link) { ... return $new_link; } for example the permalink to the post is: http://www.example.com/2010/11/11/the-post-name/ i am changing it with the function to: http://www.example.com/2010/11/11/the-awesome-post-name/ of course when i do this the new permalink is going to 404 (as expected) what can i do to make the new permalink go to the original and working one? Please consider this: it should work on any permalink structure so a permalink structure spesific solution won't do any good. i need to solve this inside the plugin. thanks!

  I am trying to learn the following things: How mp3 file looks like internally? I found this: http://mpgedit.org/mpgedit/mpeg_format/MP3Format.html but it seems old. Is there any recent changes to the format? I couldnt find any. How to open a mp3 file in java and look for bytes? I tried using audiostream but I am getting a lot of zeros and signed short integers which nowhere resemble the header/body format as mentioned in the above link. Am I wrong in interpreting the bytes? How to get amplitude, frequency and pitch of a mp3 file? No idea. Can you please suggest some book or tutorial? Can you please help me in getting the solution for the above questions? I am sorry if some questions appear to be naive, I am a just begun to learn mp3. Thanks

I have been using http://rdoc.info/github/rails/arel/master/frames Am I approaching this incorrectly? Or am I a few methods away from a solution?

• Managing Static Library project as a module like Framework on iOS project in Xcode4.

  (Solution Note, I'll answer immediately) Many people including me trying to make a kind of Static Library framework for iOS to archive some kind of modularity. Framework is best way to do this, but it doesn't provided by Apple, and workarounds don't work well. https://github.com/kstenerud/iOS-Universal-Framework/tree/master/Fake%20Framework/Templates Fake framework cannot be referenced from linking tab in Build Phases. Real framework needs modification of system setting. And still not work smoothly on every parts. Problem is static library need header files, and it's impossible to reference header files on project at another location on different project without some script. And script breaks IDE's file management abstraction. How can I use static library project like a convenient module manner? (just dragging project into another project to complete embedding)

  We do have many frameworks available in Java. Struts, Swing, JSF 2.0, Spring etc are used as per their priority. Actually, I don't know how many they are as well! But, as I am fresher to Java, even learning after their architecture, I cannot decide which framework can be used with what type of Projects ! Also, I am confused with mixed use of framework like Spring + JSF. What is the benefit to it ? Another thing making me confusing is about the UI components available in market. Like, we do have Primefaces, Ice-faces, MyFaces, Rich-faces. They may or may not have been supporting AJAX in-built. They may contains some bugs as well. What is best choice for Framework + UI component that can directly provide a best feet solution for any project ?

• Eclipse Javascript code assist problem in using WTP

  Hi, I'm new to WTP so excuse me if the solution to this is obvious. When i define and use a class from within the same file i get nice code assist help, i also get code assist for classes from the standard libraries. Unortunatly, when i try to use code and declarations from one file in another file i no longer get t he nice code assist features. I have searched the web and tried a couple of things, making shoure JS is enabled for the project, making sure the folder the scripts are in is added to the JS source folder list and even trying making a new folder with the decleration files in and adding it as a library. I would really like ot get this feature working so any help would be appreciated.

  I thought of a solution but it runs in O(n^2) time Algo 1: Steps: Its a brute force method Have 2 for loops for i = 1 to i less than array.length -1 for j=i+1 to j less than array.length This way you can get substring of every possible combination from the array Have a palindrome function which checks if a string is palindrome so for every substring (i,j) call this function, if it is a palindrome store it in a string variable If you find next palindrome substring and if it is greater than the current one, replace it with current one. Finally your string variable will have the answer Issues: 1. This algo runs in O(n^2) time. Algo 2: Reverse the string and store it in diferent array Now find the largest matching substring between both the array But this too runs in O(n^2) time Can you guys think of an algo which runs in a better time. So I programmatically add a UITabBar in view as: tbc = [[UITabBarController alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil]; tbc.viewControllers = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:blueController, redController, nil]; tbc.selectedViewController = redController; [self presentModalViewController:tbc animated:YES]; But I am unable to get "Navigation Bar" at top in this view. Can any one help to know how I can have Tabs in bottom and navigation bar in top. Please help it I am not able to find the solution.

• Where can I define Conditional compilation constants for Delphi Prism?

  I've just ported a Web service from Delphi.NET 2006 to Delphi Prism 2009 (running in the Visual Studio 2008 IDE). But I can't find where I'm supposed to set (or unset) the conditional compilation constants! Am I blind, has this option been left out, or is it just not supported in VS? [edit: thanks to Mohammed Nasman for the link] MSDN tells me to set them using the Project Designer. First, it took me a while to figure out that the Project menu is only visible when the Solution is selected (and not the web service project). Then, there's still no way to set conditional compilation constants in the Project Designer! I just can't find a way to get to the Project Options in an ASP.NET project... Is it really not possible?

• Image gallery control for ASP.Net with filtering capabilities

  I'm writing an ASP.Net application which needs to display a large number of thumbnails, preferably in a paginated format. These thumbnails will be stored on the server's hard disk, but will have their filenames listed in a SQL Server database. What I want to do is to be able to filter the images being displayed based on criteria within the database. I've looked at the NotesForGallery control, which I really like, but it doesn't seem to have a way to do that. --if I'm wrong, please correct me. Are there any other image gallery type controls, preferably free, that can do what I need? I'm hoping someone can recommend a control or solution that will point me in the right direction.   I have a situation where I need to generate a bunch of C# code files in a prebuild step of a project and include the generated files into the current project for compilation. Is there a way to do this cleanly without having to muck with the project file every time the prebuild step is run? My solution should work for both IDE based build and a Team Build based on MSBuild. Since both are MSBuild based, I suspect there won't be much difference; but wanted to call it out. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

  When I use Doctrine to generate classes from Yaml/db each Base class (which includes the table definition) extends the Doctrine_Record class. Since my app uses a master and (multiple) slave db servers I need to be able to make the Base classes extend my custom record class to force writes to go to the master db server (as described here). However if I change the base class manually I lose it again when I regenerate my classes from Yaml/db using Doctrine. I need to find a way of telling Doctrine to extend my own Base class, or find a different solution to a master/slave db setup using Doctrine. Example generated model: abstract class My_Base_User extends Doctrine_Record { However I need it to be automatically generated as: abstract class My_Base_User extends My_Record { I am using Doctrine 1.2.1 in a new Zend Framework 1.9.6 application if it makes any difference.

• Two windows fullscreen on two different screen.

  Hi! I'm actually working on an app to display an image onto a Dome. The dome projection system is constitued of two projector and a pc running a GentoO Linux and KDE, with nvidia TwinView system. Since here i've used SDL to display a fullscreen windows, and it display my app onto the two screen. But i just figured that i need to project two different images, one on each projector. That's why i search for a solution to display a fullscreen window on the first screen (projector) and another on the second. But SDL fullscreen just extend the window to the two screens. I can use any librairie (since it light and free, as i will wrap it into my small "API"), or change display setting. BTW it would be nice to have openGL support, since SDL manage only one window ^^"

  Hello Everyone, I am developing an application using cakePHP v 1.3 on windows (XAMPP). Most of the controllers are baked with the admin routing enabled. I want to secure the admin actions of every controller with a login page. How can I do this without repeating much ? One solution to the problem is that "I check for login information in the admin_index action of every controller" and then show the login screen accordingly. Is there any better way of doing this ? The detault URL to admin (http://localhost/app/admin) is pointing to the index_admin action of users controller (created a new route for this in routes.php file) Thanks

  I´m developing a webpage that contains two <p> tags (program and events), that shows two different contents. When I click the program button (it´s a <p> tag), it´s ok, it shows the table on the div´s. But, when I click the events button, again it shows the program <p> tag contents, and I want to show the events table content. I´ve read de solution for this question on this site, but not happens, when I change my JS file, the content of both <p> tags disapears. Can somebody help me?

• How to efficiently SELECT rows from database table based on selected set of values

  I have a transaction table of 1 million rows. The table has a field name "Code" to keep customer's ID. There are about 10,000 different customer code. I have an GUI interface allow user to render a report from transaction table. User may select arbitrary number of customers for rendering. I use IN operator first and it works for few customers: SELECT * FROM TRANS_TABLE WHERE CODE IN ('...', '...', '...') I quickly run into problem if I select few thousand customers. There is limitation using IN operator. An alternate way is create a temporary table with only one field of CODE, and inject selected customer codes into the temporary table using INSERT statement. I may then using SELECT A.* FROM TRANS_TABLE A INNER JOIN TEMP B ON (A.CODE=B.CODE) This works nice for huge selection. However, there is performance overhead for temporary table creation, INSERT injection and dropping of temporary table. Do you aware of better solution to handle this situation?
