• How do I connect a laptop running Windows 7 to an Android phone using WiFi Direct?

  From where I am sitting, Windows 7 does not appear to support WiFi Direct connections to Android mobile devices. Specifically, turning on WiFi Direct on my Samsung Galaxy S II does not make the device visible as a potential WiFi network connection. Windows 8 is said to support WiFi Direct, but I have no desire to upgrade at this time. I have successfully set up ad hoc WiFi connections between the S II and my laptop before, but as you may be aware, these are not the same as WiFi Direct. Before posting this question, I searched [ "Windows 7" "WiFi Direct" ] and variations thereof, and dutifully slogged through dozens of lame or irrelevant responses on various forums, badly made YouTube videos, and probable Trojan horse distribution sites. If someone out there knows how to do this, it's buried in the noise.

• How to script printer creation on a Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered print server?

  As per subject. I've found some ways of scripting printer creation on Windows print servers using WMI, but it looks like WMI doesn't support clustered print servers (or clustered servers at all). The scripts in C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts are useless because, they are not cluster-aware and end up creating the printers on the active cluster node (just like using WMI). The only tool I found that was able to work on a clustered print server is printui.exe (shortcut for rundll32 printui.dll, PrintUIEntry), but it can't create TCP printing ports: it can only add printers if the port already exists. How can I completely script printer creation (including TCP printing ports!) on a clustered Windows Server 2008 R2 print server?

  My printer is a HP Photosmart 2575. When I print from my Windows XP the margins are all ok, but when I print from my Windows 7 laptop the top margin is 2x larger for the same document, and as a result the bottom is cropped. I've already found one (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Software-and/Deskjet-5150-printer-incorrect-margins-with-Vista-64-bit/td-p/103166) thread in HP forums from someone that seems to have the same problem than me, but no solution is provided. My Windows 7 is the Home Premium x64. Can anyone help me?

• How can I stop ntbackup requiring my new password every time I'm forced to change my Windows passwor

  I have a scheduled job that runs each night using ntbackup which copies a folder on my HDD to a network share. The problem is that every time I'm required to change my Windows password I have to remember to change it in ntbackup aswell, otherwise the backup fails silently i.e. I get no warning that the backup isn't being done. Is there a way to schedule this job so it will automatically pick up my new Windows password, or somehow not be tied to my main login? My user account type is Debugger, not full Administrator, so I'm not sure if that would restrict me in any way, e.g. still forcing a four-weekly password change on a dedicated user account for this. The PC runs XP SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 domain.

• Expendable, Redundant, Easily recoverable

  I am desperate at this point, I have been looking for "Big storage" solution for a while on my own and I can't find anything that would suite my needs. But now push came to shove. Current situation: I have about 6TB data storage (already full) - Drobo. Yesterday Drobo died on me and it put me into bad situation - I can't recover my data without buying another Drobo. From extensive research online I realized that Drobo is not the safest bet and by now it seems very poor choice. I ordered new Drobo to try to get my data back, however I don't want to be in the same situation later and continuing using Drobo promises this event to re-occur. What I am looking for: 1) Inexpensive setup. 2) Dynamically extendable - add more drives and/or replace a drive with bigger capacity. 3) Redundant - setup against 1-3 drive failure, will depend on total number of drives. For the sake of argument let's assume for every 4 drives one should be able to fail without data loss. 4) Easy data recovery - let's say unforeseen happens, I would like to be able to recover information without buying new tools or replacements - example: new Drobo. 5) Should be USB or Network Attach Storage 6) No demand on speed. Doesn't have to be fast, I am not doing video editing on the setup. However if option exists, would be nice to have a decent speed. After thoughts: I reviewed few options and FreeNAS looks nice, but it doesn't have #2 - Dynamic extendability. There are work around with Pools but it seems a bit complicated and unnecessary. More over it seems like data safety is a big question - saw some horror stories. Please advise on what options I have and what seems like an optimal solution (if any). I don't care if it has to be Windows or Linux box or any other OS and/or software that has to run on top, but simple solution is more attractive. Thank you! • Recovering from backup without original install media

  A machine from my old job had a complete hard drive failure. I have backups but I'm running into severe problems restoring from them. The only install media was a secondary restore partition on the system's hard drive. I hate whoever came up with that idea more than i can possibly express with words. I spent several days trying to recover the disk - it is pretty well shot and none of my best tricks could even get it to show up in the bios/ The machine that broke is an hp with xp media center edition on it (I don't know why either). The backups were created using the default windows backup tool - I have .bfk file on an external hardrive that i am trying to restore from. I've replaced the hard drive. My home machine is running windows 7 64bit and i'm trying to use it as a platform to restore to the other disk. I downloaded the window 7 nt-restore utility, however no matter what i do it restores to my C drive rather than the specified drive. Fortunately win7 security settings prevented it from being a complete disaster - but still not a happy thing. I tried firing up the xp virtual machine. I can browse to the backups but it says they are invalid and refuse to let me view/ continue with the restore. I tried installing XP to an extra harddrive on my machine - however it bluescreens on me during the install process and I cry. I tried installing xp pro to the new drive and attempted to restore over it, it of course blackscreened on me as that was a stupid idea. I made two partitions on the new hard drive (Apparently the bios on this accursed piece of junk doesn't allow hd partitions larger than 200G anyways and thus fails 40 minutes into the install with an ever-descriptive "Disk Read Error". Guess how i spent last weekend? My last idea was to install xp pro to the second partition and then use it to restore from backup to the first. After the first restart it gives me the error "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware". My brain made one of those bad hard drive clicky noises. I've tried several boot disks but they don't seem to work. If anyone has a link to a good one it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone have any more ideas? - I really hate asking on what seems like such a simple issue but i am quite literally at my wit's end. • Recommendations for a cloud/hosted server environment that can run different Windows VMs?

  I currently have a colocated Win 2008 server that I use for hosting different windows VMs for testing: Win 2008, Win XP, Vista, Win7, Win 2000. I'd like to ditch the server and use something like Amazone AWS but the key thing is I need to be able to launch VMs for these different windows versions. AWS doesn't allow this currently. Can anyone recommend somewhere that I could use? The main reasons I want to get away from my own server are: administration: backup, windows updates, etc space: disk limitations mean I can't have all the VMs I want. I'd like to be able to pay for space incrementally. I'll typically only run 1-3 at a time but want lots of snapshots of different machines.

Does anyone know of: 1) A setting in Windows (Registry adjustment, etc) that I could assign for this to work? 2) A setting in Dexpot that would configure this? 3) A piece of software that does this? My preference for the answer is in the order above. If I get multiple answers, the one that works, that is posted first, that does what 1) states, gets selected. • Office 2010 & Windows 7 - 'File' is currently in use. Try again later

  The issue: when saving a document from either Word, Excel or PowerPoint 2010, every so often it will show the message 'file' is currently in use. Try again later. We started our rollout of Windows 7 beginning of this year, and this issue was infrequent, but is now affecting enough people to be a problem. Usually, if you clear the alert, then save again, it works fine, though only in Word or Excel. Annoyingly, PowerPoint has a bad habit of changing the file to read-only after the error. So the only choice is to save to a new file name. The issue seems to only happen to files in the user's My Documents, which is a redirection folder from their HomeShare. The HomeShares are spread across 3 different file servers, 2 Windows 2003 and 1 Windows 2008 R2. Has anyone seen this issue and know how to fix it?

• How to set a theme for Windows XP to use before a use logs in?

  If Windows XP "welcome screen" is disabled (manually or by joining a domain) an ordinary window is used to log-in (like it was in Windows 2000). This window is styled with default Windows XP "Luna" theme (blue window title, etc). All theme customizations (including turning them off at all to use plain Win2000/98 window style) are normally applied after a user logs-in. How can I alter this? I'd like either to turn off visual styles at all or to apply "Zune" styling to BEFORE a user logs in (and it'd be good to use the same settings as default for new users created).

  I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 64 bit – dual boot on the same computer. Connecting to the same wireless network. And it turns out that on Windows I get a more stable and stronger signal than on Ubuntu. To my knowledge there's a router which serves as a gateway and then there's a cable connected to the router which goes further to ISP, so the results for both OS should be the same. I've tested the issue on both OSs at various times and it gave me the same result. The question is why? Why Ubuntu networking is worse than that of Windows?

• Reasonably Secure Alternative to Poptop PPTP Server for Ubuntu server and Windows clients?

  I have a poptp server running on a old Fedora server but I'm upgrading to an Ubuntu 10.04 server. I was wondering if there are any good, reasonable secure alternatives to poptop that in can install on our new Ubuntu server as a way to get VPN access from Windows clients (XP and 7) to get remote access into our Intranet. We only use the VPN to access files located inside the network; we do not need to use it as a proxy/gateway. I've looked into openVPN but it seemed way too complicated and I would prefer something built into Windows. A Windows 7 only solution is OK.

• Windows 8 update error code 80072EFE? What's the solution?

  I keep getting the error code 80072EFE and windows is not installing 11 important updates. Also .NET framework 3.5 is not getting installed it keeps saying that its not able to download. My internet connection is working fine and I am able to browse over the entire internet. I have not changed any of the settings and I am running on Windows 8. The error code I get for .NET is 0x800F0906. Windows live essential are also not getting downloaded. Is there some issue with the Microsoft servers these days?

• Can I set Windows default second-monitor behaviour to "Extend these displays"?

  I travel to multiple offices (and multiple desks in those offices), and whenever possible I plug an external monitor into my laptop. Whenever I plug in a monitor I haven't used before, Windows defaults to "Duplicate these displays" - which messes up the arrangement of icons on my desktop if the external monitor is a different shape from my laptop's monitor. I then select "Extend these displays", and my laptop screen returns to its original shape - but my icons don't go back to their original arrangement. Grrrrr. Fast-forward a few days or weeks; I've got my icons arranged so I can find stuff again - then I go to a new office and it starts all over again. I'm tired of this. Is it possible to make "Extend these displays" the default behavior? I'm using Windows 8 x64 Home Premium, but I had the same complaint under Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. (Prior to that, I hadn't discovered the joy of dual displays. Ah, the time I wasted...)

So far all Google searches have brought up pages which specify that there is no Windows client that reads encfs. Therefore my question is: is anyone working on a Windows client for encfs? It would be really useful if someone was and it seems to be a common enough issue raised that I have a glimmer of hope that someone might be working on it.

  the last time i installed Windows 7, the boot manager automatically got installed in a small hidden partition, and the main os into another partition. So, formatting the c: won't affect the boot manager. yesterday i wiped and repartitioned my hdd like this: 50mb primary ntfs (meant for boot manager) 100gb primary ntfs (for win 8) 50gb primary ntfs (for win 7) some logical partitions to install ubuntu and other os i installed win 7 and then win 8, and now there is no os choosing menu. system directly boots win 8 and the 50 mb partition is empty. There is a way to boot Windows 7 and even Ubuntu directly from the Windows boot manager with EasyBCD. But How do i put the boot manager in the 50mb partition ?

• Can the traditional remote desktop client be accessed in Windows RT?

  As mentioned in another question, I've been unable to connect through the Remote Desktop metro app to some computers, in particular those requiring VPN access or load balancers. I'm considering purchasing a Microsoft Surface RT, but given that the app store hasn't matured significantly yet and some niche software will likely never be ported to the Modern UI, I must have acess to remote systems somehow. Until Citrix fixes the receiver app for Windows 8, I'm stuck using remote desktop. Which doesn't work. I've heard that Windows RT comes with some of the Microsoft desktop programs built in, like Microsoft Office and File Explorer. Is the "normal" Remote Desktop Connection program available in Windows RT, and if so, is it 100% compatible with previous versions?

• How can I prevent JungleDisk/MacOS X (10.6) creating a local volume for a removed external drive?

  Ok, here is situation: I use JungleDisk to sync an online folder on to a external drive connected to my Mac. If I right click Finder, click Go to Folder... then type /Volumes/ I see the drive linked here. Once I remove the external drive, an actual folder is created here in the name of the external drive, JungleDisk continues to copy files to this folder, rather than stop. Is this a feature of Mac OS X? Can I turn if off? After I re-connect my external drive, the link to the drive is appended with a 1 (so if I called the drive SpareDrive it becomes SpareDrive 1 as the newly created folder is called SpareDrive. I realise my explanation isn't very clear, but anyone understand this, and knows how to prevent it happening please let me know. PS: I have a low reputation as I don't use this often, I tend to use stackoverflow, but will check back here for answers.

• AHCI on Windows if BIOS does not have the option but all hardware does support it?

  Is it somehow possible to use AHCI on Windows if the BIOS does not have the option to enable it? This is a known problem especially on mid-old Laptops that have chipsets and drives that perfectly support SATA and AHCI, but only provide the legacy IDE mode in BIOS. Especially with SSD's this can often be a problem. I know that Linux has no problems to run everything in SATA and AHCI mode on these machines. So, is there any possibility to also make Windows "override" the BIOS? Some kind of alternative BIOS's, drivers, etc? Or some kind of Linux-based boot module that emulates an AHCI-capable BIOS to Windows while booting up?

• Force Windows 8 Metro apps to run lower resolutions below 1024x768?

  I have installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my Samsung NB30 netbook. I was very excited to try it on this little box cause it has a touchscreen and Windows 8 is supposed to be optimized for touchscreen devices. The installation was quick and smooth and all the drivers seem to work well including the one for the touchscreen. There is one major problem, though: when I try to tap one of the tiles on the Metro UI it displays This app can't open. The screen resolution is too low for this app to run. The machine has Intel Atom N450 processor and Intel GMA 3159 integrated graphics card and has maximum resolution 1024x600. I've read that Metro requires at least 1024x768. Is there a solution to this problem? Is there a way to force Windows 8 Metro apps to run in lower resolutions?

• How can I have a Windows 7 VMware guest without mouse support?

  Despite having vmmouse.present = "FALSE" mouse.vusb.absDisabled = "TRUE" pref.motionUngrab = "FALSE" in my .vmx file and a customized VMware Tools installation on the guest that does not include the mouse driver, I somehow have fully integrated mouse support for my Windows 7 VM. I can smoothly mouse from the host into the guest without needing to click or Ctrl+G in and Ctrl+Alt out. I don't want this because of the issues it causes with games. How can I get the VM to have no special mouse support while still having VMware Tools installed for its other functions (network, graphics, etc.)? The mouse works as I want without VMware Tools but not otherwise — again, despite not installing the mouse driver and having all those settings trying to disable it. Device Manager shows that the generic Windows PS/2 mouse driver is being used and not the virtual mouse driver. Guest and host are both Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, x86 and x64 respectively. I'm using VMware Player 3.1.4 and the VMware Tools installed is the latest, 8.4.6.16648.
