• How do you deal with non-logical people in the workplace?

  I ask this because you are probably the best audience I could think of. I program for a living, and it goes hand in hand with my personality type which is likely true for most of us, as such I live and work in the world of logic and logical decisions. A problem I have is in dealing with people that live and work in a world of emotional responses and reactions that typically make no sense, or have any real bearing on any given situation. What is the trick to dealing with these people? It is nothing but an act of futility, leading to utter exasperation dealing with people like this when attempting to get them to understand some pretty basic concepts. How do you do it?

  I have a java.util.ArrayList<Item> and an Item object. Now, I want to obtain the number of times the Item is stored in the arraylist. I know that I can do arrayList.contains() check but it returns true, irrespective of whether it contains one or more Items. Q1. How can I find the number of time the Item is stored in the list? ================================================================================== Q2. Also, If the list contains more than one Item, then how can I determine the index of other Items because arrayList.indexOf(item) returns the index of only first Item every time?

• Android SurfaceView/Canvas flickering after trying to clear it

  So I am trying to clear the Canvas using canvas.drawColor(Color.BLACK) but if I just call this once, the display flickers and displays the old drawing which should have been covered up by the drawColor.   I am displaying a Form from one process by passing the Show method a window handle from another process. I only want this new Form to display above the passed Form, like a MessageBox. However, this newly launched Form appears above other application windows, despite: Setting Process.WindowStyle.Hidden to the Form-displaying process Overriding the ShowWithoutActivation and CreateParams properties of the Form. Making sure Form.TopMost is not true I have checked that the window handle is valid from the second process. Focus is not stolen, however. Process A: Pass (Form) window handle to a new Process B via the command line Process B: Display a new Form using Form.Show(anotherProcessWindowHandle)

• Color getAlpha() not working as intended

  I was making a program where I load an image and after that I do something with opaque pixels. Transparent pixels showed up as black pixels, but after some time I found the cause: Color c = new Color (input.getRGB(x, y)); Works-> if ((input.getRGB(x, y) & 0xFF000000) != 0x00000000) { do_smth();} Returns true at all times-> if (c.getAlpha() != 0) { do_smth(); } So why it does not work?

  We use database to centralize our configuration. As part of it, I want to store the standard service behaviors configuration like expose service metatdata, service debug, service throttling for a service inside database rather than in web/app.config. I was planing to store the configuration for a behavior in database as XML. For e.g. <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailsinFault=true / What I am struggling with is once I read this XML from database how do I create ServiceDebugBehavior instance from it and apply it to my service host? I have tried using XML Serializer but didn't had success. Any thoughts on how this could be achieved or any alternate solutions?

• What scenarios/settings will result in a query on SQL Server (2008) return stale data

  Most applications rarely need to display 100% accurate data. For example if this stack overflow question displays that there have been 0 views, when there have really been 10, it doesn't really matter. This is one way that the (perceived) performance of applications can be improved, by caching results and therefore sometimes not showing 100% accurate results. There are some cases where the data does need to be 100% accurate though. So if I run the query select * from Foo I want to be sure that the results are not stale. Now depending on how my database is set up, other activity on the database, use of transactions and isolation levels etc this query may or may not be a true reflection of the world. What scenario's and settings can people think of that will result in this query returning stale results or given that another connection is part way through a transaction that has updated this table, how can I guarantee that when the above query returns, the results will be accurate.

  i have a problem in firing dropdownlist event i have following dropdown asp:dropdownlist id="ddlhello" Runat="server" AutoPostBack="True" onchange="javascript:return ChangeHeader();" i have also added event in code behind i.e. selectedindex change event. Now problem occurs when i execute the page, it executes javascript but server side code doesnot fire, but if i remove this line onchange="javascript:return ChangeHeader();" then server side code fires. when i checked source page it shows me two onchange events associated one for javascript and other for server side. i think that it is picking client side code and neglects server side. I am not pretty sure, so i want to know the behavior reason. And what is the way out for this. i want server and client side code to be executed. i have searched for solutions but i have not found any correct reason. please reply for the same.   I have two tables Boxer and Prospect. Boxers has general stuff like name and and dob etc and a BoxerId While Prospect contains only one value (at the moment) which is a boxerId. If a boxer is a prospect(up and coming boxer) there Id will be in the prospect table. This works fine but now I want to select all boxers that are prospects public static IQueryable<Boxer> IsProspect(this IQueryable<Boxer> query) { //this does not filter down to only prospects!!! return query.Where(x => x.Prospect != null); } This is the function I call using: var repository = GetRepository<Boxer>(); var boxers = repository.Query().IsProspect(); I would hope this would filter my collection of all boxers down to just boxers that are prospects! Oddly it doesnt filter it but if i hover over my boxers object and look at each boxer during debugging I can see "IsProspect" true or false correctly

  I am trying to proccess a queue of tasks from a database table as fast as possible while also limiting the number of threads to process the tasks. I am using a fixed sized thread pool with Executors.newFixedThreadPool(N); I want to know if there is a way of knowing if the thread pool is full, by that I mean are there currently 50 threads running, if so then I'll wait for a thread to be available before starting a new one instead of sleeping the main thread.   Hi, I've never understood why using a do while loops is necessary. I understand what they do, Which is to execute the code that the while loop contains without checking if the condition is true first. But isn't the below code: do{ document.write("ok"); } while(x == "10"){ document.write("ok"); } The exact same as: document.write("ok"); while(x == "10"){ document.write("ok"); } Maybe I'm being very stupid and missing something obvious out but I don't see the benefit of using do while over my above example.

  Hey everyone, Using C#, I need to do some extra work if function A() was called right before function C(). If any other function was called in between A() and C() then I don't want to do that extra work. Any ideas that would require the least amount of code duplication? I'm trying to avoid adding lines like "flag = false;" into every function B1..BN. Here is a very basic example: bool flag = false; void A() { flag = true; } void B1() { ... } void B2() { ... } void C() { if (flag) { //do something } } The above example was just using a simple case but I'm open to using something other than booleans. The important thing is that I want to be able to set and reset a flag of sorts so that C() knows how to behave accordingly. Thank you for your help. If you require clarification I will edit my post.

• AdMob won't load programmatically

  I'm need to include ads into my app and I have a settings option to disable ads. so I need to load the ad in code. I copied the code from google to handle that and when I set ads:loadAdOnCreate to true, it works just fine. But if I set it to false and add the two lines AdView adView = (AdView)this.findViewById(R.id.ad); adView.loadAd(new AdRequest()); The ads stop displaying. If I look at log cat, it shows that it is receiving an ad and trying to display it. However it won't actually display on screen. Help?

• Java: Best approach to have a long list of variables needed all the time without consuming memory?

  I wrote an abstract class to contain all rules of the application because I need them almost everywhere in my application. So most of what it contains is static final variables, something like this: public abstract class appRules { public static final boolean IS_DEV = true; public static final String CLOCK_SHORT_TIME_FORMAT = "something"; public static final String CLOCK_SHORT_DATE_FORMAT = "something else"; public static final String CLOCK_FULL_FORMAT = "other thing"; public static final int USERNAME_MIN = 5; public static final int USERNAME_MAX = 16; // etc. } The class is big and contains LOTS of such variables. My Question: Isn't setting static variables means these variables are floating in memory all the time? Do you suggest insteading of having an abstract class, I have a instantiable class with non-static variables (just public final), so I instantiate the class and use the variables only when I need them. Or is what am I doing is completely wrong approach and you suggest something else?

• link_to syntax with rails3 (link_to_remote) and basic javascript not working in a rails3 app?

  i am wondering if the basic link_to syntax is completely broken in current rails3 master or if i am doing some wrong syntax here. = link_to "name", nil, :onlick => "alert('Hello world!');" should actually produce an alert on click. very simple. does not work on my rails3 project!   The Project I'm working on contains something like a wrapper for call_user_func(_array) which does some checks before execution. One of those checks is method_exists (In Case the supplied first argument is an instance of a class and the second is a method name) The other is_callable. The function will throw an exception if one of those checks fails. My Code contains an array with function names (setFoo, setBar, etc.) and the php magic function for overloading (__call) which handles setting, replacing and deletion of certain variables (better certain array elements). The Problem: method_exists will return false if the function is not defined. Do I have any chance to get a true if the __call function does proper handling of the request?

  Hi! Does ini_set('session.save_path', 'custom path'); effect the session garbage cleaner? As I'm setting a custom directory for the sessions, because I've read from various php security guides, that setting a custom directory on shared hosting for sessions; can improve session security. But the problem is I've read somewhere that PHP does/handles the session garbage cleaning only when the session_save_path is the default and not modified (ie. using a custom directory)? - is this true, if so is their a solution for this?. (take into consideration I'm using shared hosting). Appreciate all help!
