  • How to debug Ubuntu/Cisco VPN issues

    I'm trying to connect an Ubuntu laptop (9.10) with some kind of Cisco VPN device; I don't know what's on the other end, and I'm not likely to find out exactly what. I know my company allows VPN from Linux clients because they provide one that I cannot get to install (it fails to compile). I've had the most luck with the network-manager-vpnc package, however I can't figure out what's failing. When I try to connect, I get this message from libnotify: The VPN connection 'XXX' failed. which is not very helpful.   • How can I get more info on high-CPU rundll32.exe process?

    I recently clean-installed Win7 on my HP8530. Everything works well most of the time, but for the last few days, every morning after my computer has been idle overnight, I find that rundll32.exe is consuming a steady 50% of CPU (i.e. all of one processor). The only way I can make it go away is by restarting. Process Explorer has no information on what the process is running. If I try to do anything to rundll32.exe (kill process, suspend, etc.) I get "Error opening process: Access is denied." None of the tabs in the ProcExp properties dialog has any information at all. I have Norton Internet Security running with the latest definitions; I've run a full system scan and it gives me a clean bill of health. How can I get more information on why this process is running?

  • Slow Firefox Javascript Canvas Performance?

    As a followup from a previous post, I have been trying to track down some slowdown I am having when drawing a scene using Javascript and the canvas element. I decided to narrow down my focus to a REALLY barebones animation that only clears the canvas and draws a single image, once per-frame. This of course runs silky smooth in Chrome, but it still stutters in Firefox. I added a simple FPS calculator, and indeed it appears that my page is typically getting an FPS in the 50's when running Firefox. This doesn't seem right to me, I must be doing something wrong here.     I have a FOSWiki installation with a bunch of Topic templates already defined. the problem is, when a user selects the topic, they are presented with a bunch of extra information that they should not edit, and should not even see really. Is there a way to hide this content in the WYSWYG editor?   • What is required for a scope in an injection framework?

    Working with libraries like Seam, Guice and Spring I have become accustomed to dealing with variables within a scope. These libraries give you a handful of scopes and allow you to define your own. This is a very handy pattern for dealing with variable lifecycles and dependency injection. I have been trying to identify where scoping is the proper solution, or where another solution is more appropriate (context variable, singleton, etc). I have found that if the scope lifecycle is not well defined it is very difficult and often failure prone to manage injections in this way. I have searched on this topic but have found little discussion on the pattern. Is there some good articles discussing where to use scoping and what are required/suggested prerequisites for scoping? I interested in both reference discussion or your view on what is required or suggested for a proper scope implementation. Keep in mind that I am referring to scoping as a general idea, this includes things like globally scoped singletons, request or session scoped web variable, conversation scopes, and others. Edit: Some simple background on custom scopes: Google Guice custom scope Some definitions relevant to above: “scoping” - A set of requirements that define what objects get injected at what time. A simple example of this is Thread scope, based on a ThreadLocal. This scope would inject a variable based on what thread instantiated the class. Here's an example of this: “context variable” - A repository passed from one object to another holding relevant variables. Much like scoping this is a more brute force way of accessing variables based on the calling code. Example: methodOne(Context context){ methodTwo(context); } methodTwo(Context context){ ... //same context as method one, if called from method one } “globally scoped singleton” - Following the singleton pattern, there is one object per application instance. This applies to scopes because there is a basic lifecycle to this object: there is only one of these objects instantiated.   • how do I set quad buffering with jogl 2.0

    I'm trying to create a 3d renderer for stereo vision with quad buffering with Processing/Java. The hardware I'm using is ready for this so that's not the problem. I had a stereo.jar library in jogl 1.0 working for Processing 1.5, but now I have to use Processing 2.0 and jogl 2.0 therefore I have to adapt the library. Some things are changed in the source code of Jogl and Processing and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to tell Processing I want to use quad buffering.     Is it possible to create a template to use in Windows Live mail which I can load peoples details into from my contact list? I currently send emails to people but I have to manually view them in the address book, then copy there details into an email. What I would like is to open the template, select the email address and everything else is auto completed, such as first name, address etc. These would go in set fields which I set within the template. Is this possible? I am willing to switch to another mail account if needed but I would prefer it to be in Windows Live Mail. Thank you. :)

My CentOS machines have as many as six other users that share the systems, but the mpenning userid is the only one that has this issue. Approximately 5% of my logins see this issue, but no other usernames exhibit this behavior. Questions Given the kind of scripts I keep on these systems (which control much of our network infrastructure), I'm a little spooked by this and would like to understand what would cause my logins to occasionally miss source addresses. Is there anything (other than malicious activity) that would reasonably explain the behavior? Other than bash history timestamping, are there other things I can do to track the issue down? Informational Since this started happening, I enabled bash history time-stamping (i.e. HISTTIMEFORMAT="%y-%m-%d %T " in .bash_profile) and also added a few other bash history hacks; however, that does not give clues to what happened during the previous occurrences. CPU2 Status: Processor sensors for CPU2, IERR was deasserted I've Googled it, random forum posts aren't providing me with a clear answer. It's also apparently not a word: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/deassert?s=t I can guess the meaning. Assert: to state with assurance, confidence, or force Okay. So the negative of that. The state of lack-of-confidence? What is this error message trying to tell me? Memory errors were grouped with this one: is it trying to say that IERR for CPU2 should be set, but is not? That the current system state is SNAFU but CPU2 sees everything as fine?

    My coworker wants to create an invoice template in Excel 2007. In column 1, he wants to be able to put in a SKU like '000293954'[1], and when he hits tab, have the other columns fill in a matching description and price. There would be a bunch of different SKUs and information. Has anybody done this type of thing with a macro before? Any advice? (I have programming experience with Javascript, PHP, and Ruby, but have never written a macro.) [1] The input wouldn't be typed - he'd use a wedge barcode scanner that inputs just like it was typed. Not that it matters for this question.

  • What is a safe way to dispose of personal info on an old laptop and what to do with said laptop?

    I have an old laptop someone gave me that only has 64Megs of RAM on it and runs WIN XP. I wanted to wipe the drive clean by installing Ubuntu Desktop to remove any shred of personal information on it and to make it useful to someone else. But the Ubuntu installer keeps failing because there is not enough RAM. Is there another version of Linux that would easily install on a 64 Megs of RAM system? 2nd part of question, what do I do with this old laptop? It doesn't have a battery anymore and has to be plugged into the wall to run. Assuming I can install a good Linux distro on it, who do I give it to? Salvation Army? I'm looking to just have it be useful to someone or some organization for spare parts or some basic computer usage.

  • I can't connect to internet via lan cable because 2032 battery died and my bios bios info is now empty [closed]

    I have a compaq CQ61-112SL from about 5 years now... the main battery is almost dead, doesn't keep more then 10 minutes. anyway my problem is that my motherboard battery didn't have any more energy left a few days ago and since then I can't access internet through lan cable but only via wifi. I need cable though. I saw that on my BIOS setup page there were a bunch of parameters missing like serial number, UUID, product number and stuff like that. Also when I start the notebook it prints something like : No serial found. or something like that. I don't really know if the reason why my lan cable doesn't work is the empty BIOS but i assume that's it. If it's not please enlighten me. Or anyway tell me how to update the serial number and product number to the real ones (instead of the 0000000000000 that is now in my bios). I downloaded HP DMI which should make it possible to set these variables on the BIOS but i'm on Windows 8 64bit and the executable file that I need to open for my laptop model says it can't run on 64 bit.

    Any tool, plugin, extension, script/ code to push "selected" data, text, information blobs from Web pages, Emails etc, then parsed and imported to structured Event, Appointment (e.g. .ics) on a standard Calendar like Outlook, Google, iCal? If not, what and how could I use some scripting, coding or existing tools, extensions to add on top and do this. I come across a lot of unstructured information on Webpages, Emails, FB events etc. where I just want to add that information to my Calendar. Instead of entering all the information by hand all the time, there should be an easy enough way to have the information get parsed, organized and imported to a Calendar... Either directly to a calendar from source or Translated to a standard format such as .ICS that can be imported & saved easily. Would love to see some suggestions for this incorporating one or more of the following: on Windows with Chrome & Outlook on iPhone/ iPad to its Calendar PS: I'll come back and see if I can add more information to this question and to answer it as well. I have not found a solution yet.
