• How do I install latest NVIDIA drivers?

  This is what I am trying to do. I downloaded the latest driver for my VGA from http://www.nvidia.com. The installation needs the X11 to be shut down, so I log out of my account, then press CTRL+ALT+F1, then log in with my username and passowrd, then run the command sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run in every possible way, I have even tried CHMODing the package with 777 permissions, but still I'm getting the sh: can't open NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I must write a multiplayer pong game for the school. Where are thousand of rooms and where two players can go in to a room and play together and collect points. I programmed the Pong game using Java (LibGDX). How can I do the Network part. I searched the web. And I came across Kryonet. Is there something better? What should I google. On the Internet there are a lot of those questions. And no good answers. I hope that this most questions can be answered.   I was recently introduced to microsoft's tool that analyzes managed code assemblies called FxCop. It points out possible design, localization, performance, and security improvements against a pre defined set of rules (and also accepts custom rules). At first I was unsure how to go about using it as it seems to be aimed at software developers (.exe and .dll) . Its easy to get around this with the following steps: 1)Create a new folder (i.e C:\Code Analysis) 2)Publish your web application into the new folder 3)Open FxCop and add all the dll files from the newly created bin folder  to be scrutinized.   I need to make private collaboration platform, where the website is not open to public registration, and all the posts is only accessible by the members. The members is management team of a company. Along with many features, it has Announcement. When posting Announcement, it has option to upload images. I personally like it public, because the file transfer faster and can be easily integrated with CDN. I just wonder whether I need to make the image public, or only accessible by the members.

• Ubuntu partition won't display on screen

  I installed ggobi on my MacBook Pro, and it wasn't working right. I looked up some information, and found this site: Gtk Warning: Cannot open display I followed the vague instructions, but I think I just typed export DISPLAY=:0 directly into my terminal (I'm still in my Mac partition at this point). Fast forward a few days, and I try to go into my Ubuntu partition. It only gives me command line options. I remember my reckless input from a few days back, and I'm certain that it is the issue. My problem is that I have no idea how to get my previous display settings back. My Mac partition seems unaffected, but it'd be nice to get back into my Ubuntu partition. My last resort is completely reverting my computer to my most recent backup before I changed it, but if anyone out there knows how to fix this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu One Music - 'Unable to Parse '2006-12-12T08:00:00Z' as integer (iTunes Non-DRM AAC)

  Good Morning; Title says most of it, uploaded a new song to my U1 Music (via my Android using the Files app). Which is an recently purchased iTunes .m4a song, so is non-DRM AAC. Uploaded fine, and browsing in U1 Music I see artist "Spray" fine, and then the Album, but attempting to open the Album to the song, returns: "'Unable to Parse '2006-12-12T08:00:00Z' as integer" Not sure if it's a problem with the file itself, or just how Android uploaded the file, as that is clearly a weird date code. All my other music is fine, no errors, and the service works awesome. My U1 account is under the e-mail address used for this question. Thanks!

  I run a website that includes a blog which was hand-coded by myself and is hosted on the same domain. My partner in this endeavour thinks it would be a good idea to open up a blogger/wordpress blog and duplicate the on-site blog on this off-site blog. AFAIK the main reason for doing this is the SEO benefits of the inbound links that this off-site blog will create. I think this is a bad idea, because: Effectively what we're doing is creating a (very small scale) link farm We're more likely to be punished than rewarded (in SEO terms) for duplicating our content across domains This introduces a problem of synchronising our content across domains. For example, if a blog post is edited on the on-site blog, then ideally the off-site blog should be similarly updated. I know very little about SEO, so would be interested to hear what more informed readers have to say.

• Ugly LibreOffice font

  I have been experiencing this super annoying bug with fonts in LibreOffice. Please see below screenshot. The spaces between letters are just messed, no matter what font or level of zoom I choose. When I change the zoom level, the spacing is actually changing but still looks very ugly. I have a pretty much default instalation of Ubuntu. I installed a couple of fonts (droid, mscorefonts). I did not change any font settings. Fonts in other applications looks great. When I open the very same text in Google Docs or MS Web Word, it looks perfect. I would appreciate any help concerning this issue. Thanks!

• Gnome/Nautilus does not remember individual folder's size/position?

  I am using ubuntu 11.04 and I have noticed that Gnome/Nautilus remembers a "global" setting for size/position using the last window open instead of remembering an individual size/position for each folder. Also, this applies for some applications as well. I find this a real productivity killer and I think its one of the most basic features of a window manager. Funny thing is, that windows had this feature for a long time now. I have tried devilspie but I find it would be really time wasting to configure every folder that way. Is there any fix for this issue, if not what window manager would you suggest me? Thank you!

• why does my lubuntu recognizes only lubuntu instalation cds?

  I installed lubuntu from alternate cd a month ago. Now when I needed to read some cd's, the cd try won't open. It can be opened before ubuntu boots up. It can be opened after entering sudo eject -i off from console. But it won't mount any other cd-roms, than just the lubuntu live-cd and lubuntu alternate instal cd, where it was installed from. "mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0" as output, when try to mount anything else. Problem can't be in corrupted sd's, because othe computer, did recognize them well.

• How do I change local display resolution via SSH?

  I have a machine running Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS and I'm having problems with the local monitor. The Dell flat panel I'm using only displays this message while the computer running: "Cannot Display This Video Mode" and then the information: "Optimum resolution 1280x1024 60Hz". I'm fairly new to using an operating system wholly via command line but I'm learning fast. :) I can access the server fine via SSH so using it is not a problem. However, for where it is positioned at the moment, it would be much more convenient to use the computer locally. I'm just wondering how to change the local screen resolution via SSH to something usable by my monitor. Thanks for your time! BTW: I have also tried switching displays and I still have the same problem. Also BTW: I tried putting in the xrandr command and all I get back is: Can't open display

• Program/Wrapper (how do you call it) to automate a certain script

  In this question a script is provided, that minimizes all the other windows except the active one. But the thing is, to trigger this script a (shortcut) key-combination has to be pressed. I would love it, if it would be possible to automate this behavior, i.e. no matter what I do, only the active window is not minimized. This way I cannot view more then one open window at the same tine, which is what I'm after. Is it possible to write a script, that does this ? I a question I asked a while ago (where I learned about the above script), someone said, the proper way to do this, would be through a wrapper through which every program starts. I would also be very happy with a more sloppy solution, like activating this script 100 times per second (simulating pressing the shortcut combination a 100 times per second), if it is feasible - although I was warned, that that may not be a very good idea.

• Keyboard Shortcuts no longer working on Ubuntu 12.04 with GNOME 3.4.1 [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the keyboard shortcut to minimise a window to launcher in unity? I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 (with Gnome 3.2 I think), to Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4.1, and my custom shortcuts have stopped working. Opening up the All Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts, I can see that my shortcuts are still there. All of the shortcuts that I didn't change are working, and my shortcuts in the custom section are working (eg Ctrl+Alt+G to open gedit), its just that the shortcuts I had customised before the upgrade no longer work. Under Launchers, I had changed "Launch Terminal" to Ctrl+Alt+T, and under Navigation I had changed move to workspace above/below to Shift+Ctrl+Up/Down. Investigating further, it looks like the default shortcuts for these actions work (Ctrl+Alt+Up/ Down moves me up and down workpaces), so I'm guessing that there is some discrepancy between what I am seeing on the Keyboard Settings and what my computer is reading from. Any help would be appreciated.

  I heard that in an OpenGL game what we do to let the player move is not to move the camera but to move the whole world around. For example here is an extract of this tutorial: http://open.gl/transformations In real life you're used to moving the camera to alter the view of a certain scene, in OpenGL it's the other way around. The camera in OpenGL cannot move and is defined to be located at (0,0,0) facing the negative Z direction. That means that instead of moving and rotating the camera, the world is moved and rotated around the camera to construct the appropriate view. Why do we do that?

  I have a dual boot system with 12.04 and windows 7. Ubuntu worked fine yesterday but this morning upon boot I get subject. Searched the forums and unsuccessful with recovery. I tried sudo gedit /var/log/apt/history.log to see the log of removed packages, but get the following... ** (gedit:976): WARNING **: Command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=2d7d18532e9953bc8a2b852e00000007 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n Cannot open display: Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options.   Possible Duplicate: How do I install Google Chome on legacy 7.10 computer? I am trying to get google-chrome to work on Ubuntu 7.10. I installed it with --force-depends and got it to install, but now when I try to run it, I get this error: /usr/bin/google-chrome: error while loading shared libraries: libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Is there a way to still get google-chrome to load even without this dependency satisfied? This is an old system that needs to keep this old 7.10 Ubuntu version and I would like to have google-chrome if possible installed, even if it means no sound or other features that are not compatible.

• Edubuntu - Java Iced Tea and Carnegie Learning

  I've recently built a computer lab running various forms of Ubuntu. I'm testing out Edubuntu to see if it is a better fit for our school, but I'm running up against a problem I can't resolve. One of the programs we use is Carnegie Learning Online, a Java program that I've managed to get working on both Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04. After updating Java (all distros), when you access the website a .tt applet file is downloaded. With Java installed you can select the IcedTea plugin to open it. On 10.04/12.04, this then opens a new window, Java runs a setup of some sort, and then a new window with the Carnegie program opens. On Edubuntu however, once you've told IcedTea to run it....nothing happens. No errors, just nothing. I've tried this with an older update of Java as well as the newest. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu dual-boot errors in 13.10

  Specs: Lenovo U530, 500 GB HDD, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit, i7 Intel Processor with integrated graphics I'm trying to dual-boot Ubuntu but I have the following problems: After booting from live DVD, the GRUB loads but with the following errors: "Could not open '\EFI\BOOT\fallback.efi': 14" and "error: variable 'root' isn't set. I have disabled Fast Startup and SecureBoot before booting the disc. Also, after trying to "Try Ubuntu without installing" my screen, and DVD Drive shutoff momentarily but then my drive boots up but my screen remains black and sometimes flashes but doesn't display anything. I will greatly appreciate any help. P.S. I don't have any previous version of Ubuntu installed so this is NOT an upgrade from a previous version.

• Backlight turns off when launching Braid

  I have Ubuntu 12.10 on Acer Aspire 4736z and I installed Braid. When I have just turned on the computer, login and then launch Braid right away, it works just fine. But when I have already been using the computer for some other tasks like browsing or typing on Open Office after booting up and then decide to play Braid, the backlight turns off and I cannot turn it back on using the screen brightness control buttons. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Braid but it's the same. Please help me. Thanks.
