• Map, Set use cases in a general web app

  I am currently working on my own Java web app (to be shown in interview to get a Java job). So I've not worked on Java in professional environment, so no guidance. I have database, entity classes, JPA relationships. Use cases are like, user has albums, album has pics, user has locations, location has co-ordinates etc. I used List (ArrayList) everywhere. I can do anything with List and DB, get some entry, find etc. For example, I will keep the list of users in List, then use queries to get some entry (why would I keep them in Map with id/email as key?). I know very well the working and features, implementing classes of Map, Set. I can use them for solving some algorithm, processing some data etc. In interviews, I get asked have you worked with these, where have you used them etc. So, Please tell me cases where they should be used (DB or any popular real use case).

• Optimization of time-varying parameters

  I need to find an optimal set of "n" parameter values that minimize an objective function (a 2-hr simulation of a system). I have looked at genetic algorithm and simulated annealing methods, but was wondering if there are any better algorithms and guidance on their merits and limitations. With the above optimization methods I can find the optimal parameter values that hold true for the entire simulation duration. Incase, I want to find the optimal "time varying" parameter values (parameter values change with time during the 2-hr simulation), are there any methods/ideas other than making each time varying parameter value a variable to optimize? Any thoughts?

• Best practice, or generally best way to set up web-hosting server, permissions, etc. [closed]

  Hi, I'm about to set up a server upon which a friend and I will be hosting web sites, and I'll be using Debian. I've set up a LAMP solution many times just to using for local testing purposes, but never for actual production use. I was wondering what are the best practices are in terms of setting the server up, in reference specifically to accessing the web root directory. A couple of the options I have seen: Set up a single user account on the server for us both to use and use a virtual host to point to the somewhere in the home directory, e.g. /home/webdev/www. Set each of us up a user account, and grant permissions in some way to /var/www (What would be the best way? Set up a new group?) I want to get this right when I first set this up as there won't be any going back for a while once our first site is up and running. Appreciate any guidance in advance.

• Good university for computer science with plans for Game Dev.

  I am starting my Computer science degree at a local community college in Programming using C++. However, i will be transferring to a 4-year university. Does anyone have any insight on university programs? I know Cal State Fullerton has a degree with a minor in Game Dev. however, is that as important as getting a degree from a really great school? if i could shoot for something like Cal Poly would that be better? Or even Stanford or SF state being so close to so many gaming companies up there in the bay area? thank you in advance for any guidance.

  not exactly sure where I should post this but I have a question about filing for software patents. If I have an idea for a UI feature, how do I go about patenting that feature. I don't have any code written and I'm afraid my coding skills aren't up to snuff in order to code the thing I imagined but aside from that, can anyone give me any general guidance and info? I've gone through the CIPO site (Canada's patent office) but haven't come away with enough information on what I'm trying to patent but what I have understood is that I have to very thorough in describing what I'm trying to patent and showing that it could work. If anyone has gone through the process of patenting software, can you tell me about your experience? I would like to hear about US and Canadian experiences Thank you!

• Is it possible to modify a video codec + distribute it?

  this is my first question on this particular stackexchange node, not sure if it's the most appropriate place for this question (if not, guidance to the appropriate node would be appreciated). the abstract: I'm interested in modifying existing video codecs and distributing my modded codecs in such a way as to make them easily added to a users codec library... for example to be added to their mpeg streamclip, ffmpeg etc. some details: I've had some experience modifying codecs by hacking ffmpeg source files and compiling my hacked code (so that for ex: my version of ffmpeg has a very different h.263 than yours). I'm interested now in taking these modified codecs and somehow making them easily distributable, so others could "add them" to their "libraries." Also, I realize there are some tricky rights/patent issues here, this is in part my motivation.   I implemented PathModifier for path of each enemy in my tower of defense game. So I applied fixed time to path modifier in that enemy complete their path. Like following code describe. new PathModifier(speed, path); Here speed define the time to complete the path. But in tower of defense game my problem is, there is a tower which slow down the movement of the enemy.   I'm a sophomore about to go into my Spring semester in a few weeks and I am trying to decide some major things that will affect the next few years of my life and was looking for some guidance/advice. I'm currently working towards a Bachelors in Computer Science and my question was whether I should minor in Corporate Strategy and Math or just work towards a Masters in Computer Science? I was wondering if employers are more looking for Masters degrees in Computer Science or if those minors could be beneficial to me. Some things that may affect responses: I already have all my other requirements filled for graduating except my Computer Science classes, I've already had an internship this past summer and am already hearing back from several companies about internships for this upcoming summer. • How to play a fixed frequency sound using Python

  I have tried a number of ways of playing a fixed frequency sound (e.g. 1000Hz) and nothing works. I have downloaded "beep" and that makes no noise. I tried interfacing to pyao, and that had no effect. I tried interfacing to audiere, and get a runtime error indicating the library could not be found, despite installing it from the software centre. Any guidance for installation of appropriate libraries and relevant code would be most appreciated. I cannot generate .mp3/ .wav files for this, but need to generate the tones at run time. • In terms of SEO, is it better to have a URL broken down by folder, or with dashed names?

  I am creating a friendly url interpreter for my website. I have read dozens of similar topics on this site, but none that seem to address my particular situation. What I want to know is if it's better to have: A well broken down URL where each category is represented by a folder domain.com/1036/OR/Lane/Lowell/Wetleau-Subdivision -OR- A URL which groups all of the categories and terms together domain.com/1036/Wetleau-Subdivision-Lowell-OR-Lane I am asking only in terms of what is best for SEO, not necessarily human readability. My thinking is that it may be better to group them all together like they are in the second example. My reasoning being that all of those terms represent the page and are more likely to draw a result. I am a complete SEO nub though, and I crave some expert guidance. Each of these Windows and Linux servers has a different host name and domain name (and IP address). Our team would appreciate your guidance on: (1) Is there a way to implement this Web portal-based platform on these Linux and Windows servers without customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? (2) Is there a way to create some variables using JavaScript for host name and domain name and call them from the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of our pages, the variables or objects would replace that. • Samsung RV520 with 12.04 freezes while having WiFi and brightness control issues

  I have a new Samsung RV520 and have just installed Precise Pangolin 12.04 LTS. I am having serious problems now with the wifi constantly disconnecting. This then causes the brightness control to appear on the screen. The screen starts flickering and then freezes the whole machine. Indeed the brightness control doesn't work at all. I am using a Intel Centrino N wireless card. Please can anyone provide any guidance as to how to resolve these issue on this machine. Many thanks for your help.

• What is the best freeware app for Windows to mount EXT4 partitions (from a GPT 4TB Disk) as RW, safely without corrupting the EXT4 partition?

  My Computer is set up as Dualboot Windows and Ubuntu. I have 1 OS drive, and 1 hard drive with a /backup partition (which has all my family photos and data) and it is ext4. Also note... it is EXT4, and it is GPT, and it is 4TB size. Anyway, Windows can not mount the /backup ext4 partition. What software/freeware do you reccomend for Windows? Preferrably looking for someone with experiance using it for a long time and not have problems with EXT4 partition which is a 4TB, GPT Disk. Thank you for your advice and guidance! Always, appreciate everyones help at askubuntu, you guys are the best. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu thinks I have two displays

  When I first installed Ubuntu I noticed that my mouse would flicker a lot, which caused me to investigate. I remembered back when I ran Fedora I had an issue where it thought I had two displays (hp-dv7 4285dx laptop). In Fedora, this didn't cause any issues. In Ubuntu, it causes the mouse the flicker a lot. The fix I've been using is to just go into settings displays and disable the display that doesn't actually exist. The only problem is that this is not permanent. Each time I start up Ubuntu, I have to go back in and disable this display. They're each just titled "Built-in Display", and have the same resolution. My laptop does have two graphics cards: one on-board and one dedicated. I'm not sure if maybe that is causing is an issue? Any guidance towards this would be great. Thanks!

  I want to know how to create a large game which has more than one level in it and those levels are loaded from the xml file. In my game I have many objects for each different level which I have to load when use click on it. At present for example my game contain 20 levels and now I was loading all the graphic object for all 20 levels. But the correct way was that only load graphic of that particular level only. So I don't know how to do that. So please explain this by providing game example. At present I was creating a class for each my game object image by extending sprite to it. I know it was not a suitable way so provide guidance on it. Basically I want to know how to create large games in andengine? Please help me about that because it will provide help to other community member also because andengine did not have proper documentation for learning developer about how to manage large game?

• How should I implement the repository pattern for complex object models?

  Our data model has almost 200 classes that can be separated out into about a dozen functional areas. It would have been nice to use domains, but the separation isn't that clean and we can't change it. We're redesigning our DAL to use Entity Framework and most of the recommendations that I've seen suggest using a Repository pattern. However, none of the samples really deal with complex object models. Some implementations that I've found suggest the use of a repository-per-entity. This seems ridiculous and un-maintainable for large, complex models. Is it really necessary to create a UnitOfWork for each operation, and a Repository for each entity? I could end up with thousands of classes. I know this is unreasonable, but I've found very little guidance implementing Repository, Unit Of Work, and Entity Framework over complex models and realistic business applications.

So in my game implementation I have to create body for all found vertices and I have to generate image based on that polygon shape. So my problem is how to create image that match the user provided vertices. In cocos2d I listen that there is an implementation of something like Image Masking. I am still working on this but not getting proper guidance. This site is caching 2 times in 24Hrs. Some times sites will back in to top 10 search listing on 100s keywords, some time its gone out 1000+. anybody can help me why its happening.
