  I have a server running gitosis (installed from the package manager) on debian lenny. This works fine for a small number of systems but as the number of alerts grows the important message become less visible among the informational notices. Email filtering can only be effective to a point. What sort of solution can I use in place of emails that will allow me to send arbitrary alerts from various services and that will scale easily as the number of services grows?

  I'm on Windows 7 Powershell and have ncat from http://nmap.org/ncat/ I'm trying to send "foo" to some network device PS> ncat -u 192.168.1.255 6061 foo but it sends "foo\n" (66 6f 6f 0a) and the line-feed makes the device not recognize the command. there's a -C option to add a carriage return, but that's no help. I made a text file containing "foo" and did PS> cat .\test.txt | ncat -u 192.168.1.255 6061 but that also adds CRLF

• How can I unlock a folder locked by ‘System’ process on Windows Server 2008?

  I'm on Windows Server 2008 64-bit. LockHunter identifies that a folder is locked by the "System" process. I'm not sure why this happens, but my bigger concern is how to unlock it. I'm looking for a solution that can be run from the command line. LockHunter itself is unable to unlock it. Also, Sysinternals' Process Explorer doesn't find the locked folder's handle. Rebooting is not an option either.

• Accessing a persistent ssh tunnel

  How do I pass commands (shell) to a persistent SSH tunnel rather than open a connection for every instance? I have a Python scraper running on a client server which passes URL variables and shell commands to a remote host via a reverse tunnel (forwarded port), so that the URL's are then executed on the host (python fabric ssh localhost:12345 'browser open URL'). I could make the reverse tunnel persistent but how do I echo the url/command to the session? Update - ControlMaster (built into SSH) solves this one.

• I just restarted Apache and now the server is down

  I am pretty terrified right now. I'm scared I'm going to get a call in a couple minutes from a hundred people saying the website doesn't work. I was at the terminal changing some configuration files when I went to restart the server to update the .conf files with this command: /etc/init.d/apache2 graceful After I ran that, none of the websites work and I have no idea what to do. There are about 100 errors I am getting according to the log files. They all begin with "PHP Notice" and most relate to "use of undefined constant" Also, I just spoke with a coworker, describing what I did, and he noticed that there are two installations of apache on the server and that I restarted the one that we don't use. The problem was (as you experts facepalming probably know) that it couldn't access an error log in the directory I was working in. I created an empty error log file and tried the restart command again and now all the sites are back up... Though my original problem is still there..   Hey all, I run the following from command line: handbrakeCLI.exe -i SourceFile.mkv -o OutputFile.mkv --stop-at 120 According to the CLIGuide you can supply the --stop-at value as seconds (which is what I want, stop encoding 120 seconds into the file). My purpose for this is to quickly create a very high quality video clip from a full movie for testing other encoding processes. However, when I view my output file it is the entire movie. Any ideas?

  I'm trying to create partitions for a Slackware installation on my computer (beside Windows 7) just to have a nice distribution running mostly for school but when I run fdisk and print the partition table I get the following message: Partition x does not end on cylinder boundary.   We have a sever that shares all the printers. The PC's that are running on XP professional get a error message quoting (Connect to Printer). The only way I can find to get around the problem is by restating the printer and as soon is it comes online you can then add it but you have not got long. do you think it could be anything to-do with updates on the sever? the sever system is running Windows Server 2003 any help would be much appreciated.
