• Can I get dual monitor support (2xDVI) from my (DVI+HDMI) graphics card?

  It seems that pure 2 x DVI dual head video cards are becoming rare. Most cards feature something like 1 x DVI plus 1 x HDMI plus 1 x VGA or some other interface. The idea seems to be that you can just use an HDMI <= DVI adapter. One result is that cards are seldom marked " 2 x DVI " anymore, but does this mean that they support simultaneous output on all interfaces? Are all cards dual head these days? Take Asus's nVidia cards for example, they routinely have 1 x DVI plus 1 x HDMI instead of 2 x DVI, so my question is, are these equivalent to a dual head DVI card, or is there some detail required for dual monitor support? I use dual-monitor stretched desktops for digital signage projects.

• Automatically keeping two excel data tables in-sync (w/out VBA)

  I'm putting together a workbook for tracking a stock portfolio. The primary sheet contains a table with the list of the transactions. From this I would like to create an overview table on another sheet with only one row per unique stock symbol that includes things like cost basis, returns, etc. The problem is that nothing I've tried updates the overview table correctly when rows are added to the transaction table. The closest I've got is something like the following: http://www.get-digital-help.com/2009/04/14/create-a-unique-alphabetically-sorted-list-extracted-from-a-column/ However, this requires applying that formula to every cell in the primary column of the overview sheet. And even then the range of the table isn't extended down to include new rows as they become valid. Essentially I'm looking for a way that auto-adds rows to a table and copies the formula based on a different table changing without using VBA. • Windows 7 backup to 3TB Seagate external drive got 0x8078002A error [migrated]

  I'm using the Windows 7 backup and restore utility to create a system image and personal file backup to an external Seagate GoFlex 3TB disk. I got the following error: One of the backup files could not be created. Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Error code: 0x8078002A I searched all over the internet and found these two related discussions (discussion 1 and discussion 2). Note the 1st discussion is for a Western Digital drive, which seem to have a solution with the WD Quick Formatter tool. But I downloaded that software and it cannot detect my Seagate drive. The 2nd discussion is directly relevant but it does not offer a solution. I've spent days on this and am at a loss... Please help if you know what to do to make it work! Thank you!

• Print driver installs failing

  All of the Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise machines in my organization are failing to install a good number of printer drivers that previously installed without issue. This only happens with printer drivers. And not with all printer drivers. Just some. Network drivers, video drivers, etc. have had no problems. The error that appears in Device Manager is "The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner." It appears to be signed fine though. If I take it off the domain, it installs fine. But it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Group Policy. I moved the machine to an OU that blocks inheritance, ran a gpupdate, ran rsop.msc to verify, and tried again. And it still didn't work. Likewise, I removed a machine from the domain, manually set all of the domain Group Policy settings in gpedit.msc, and tried that way, and it worked fine. So it seems like the Group Policy settings are irrelevant. What other domain-related issue could be causing this though? Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks!

• Mac Grey/White Screen of Death

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• HDMI vs Component vs VGA vs DVI vs DisplayPort

  What are the pros and cons of each of these different display adapters and cables? From what I can understand, HDMI offers the ability to send audio along the same cable as well as the ability to do progressive scan. I've Googled but I can't seem to find any real answers. Why would someone care to run 1280x1024 over HDMI or DVI instead of VGA? What about component? All I hear is one is digital and one is analog, but I can't find what that means from a feature/benefit stand point.

• .vob to h.264 MP4 Files - Worth The Effort?

  When I was doing the converting to digital format a while back I chose .VOB due to no quality loss. However recently I have been informed of this h.264 compression method. Time is not an issue here, I don't mind waiting for conversions etc. I also understand that any sort of compression will reduce quality. To test I converted a 4GB .VOB to a .mp4 using h264 in handbrake and the quality loss was very very very hard to notice. From what I have understood through research Space = .mp4(h.264) Quality = .Vob Playback = Both equally supported? But these concerns have yet to be answered: My comparison was done on a computer monitor, would the quality loss be substantially noticable if I purchased a 50 inch TV in the future? Is this type of file highly supported? (I don't want to experience incompatible players) What other issues could a conversion of files such as this cause in the future?

• Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8? [migrated]

  Last year I got a new Western Digital WD Blue 500GB HDD to replace my old drive. The first thing I did was to install latest Windows 8. While installing Windows 8 I created 3 partitions, C drive for the OS and others for storage. The OS partition is 120GB (which at the time I thought would be plenty big) but I'm now realizing its too small! I wonder if it's possible to re-size HDD partition without reformatting and re-install my Windows 8. So that is my question, Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8 without having to re-format? I've used the Norton Partition Magic and Disk Management to make this happen but there doesn't seem to be any options to make it happen. Thanks for any help you guys can give regarding my question. I've worked hard to optimize my current install of Windows 8 and would hate to start all over again.

  I had the external USB 3.0 western Digital My Book essential 3TB drive. I had loto of data on it. Suddenlt when i start copying data from it then after reading 20GB or so data then i get error that system can't read from the location. I have to turn the uSB power off , disconnect it and then again connect it. so i have to trnasfer the data in small chunks like 20Gb , 30GB etc. I have n ow transferred all the data but i want to know that is hard disk gone or it can be fixed or its something windows fault not HD fault

• Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

• HD movies stutter.

  I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). • Quiet Sound while recording using the "Stereo Mix" option on Windows XP.

  I'm trying to record some of my work, and the video capture program I'm using works fine. It's HyperCam2, and since it's not really professional, I don't care about that little thing in the corner. Anyways, If I check the record sound option and put it on the highest quality, and I want it to record the sounds playing from my computer, I have it record the "Stereo Mix" setting. However, after a quick test, I saw that even though my computer was at max volume, the recorded sound was very quiet, almost inaudible. Thinking it was just HyperCam, I downloaded Audacity, and only met similar results.   A Windows Server 2003 R2 has the following hard disk configuration: - 3 internal hard disks attached to a 3Ware unit, configured in Raid 1 + spare unit - 3 external USB backup disks: 2 Verbatim 1TB (Samsung HD103SI) + 1 Western Digital 1TB (WD10EADS) The server runs 365 days per year, h24, however: - at daytime the server/user usage is limited to the internal hard disks - at nighttime there's no user usage, apart from scheduled maintenance tasks, basically the Server will be idle from 7PM to 8AM. apart from nighly backups (few hours). I was wondering if: (a) it makes any sense let Windows manage power savings, allowing disks to spin down accordingly, ** OR** let the disks stay awlays-on, to avoid permature wearing, due to continuous spin up/down (b) leave internal disks always on, and force external disks to power down while idle (this requires third party tools, such as Verbatim's Green button utility) Your thoughts?

• Archive Recorded Show from DVR

  IF I have an AT&T U-Verse DVR, is there a way to copy the information off the DVR to an PC for Archiving/burning to a DVD? I know that I could connect the A/V outs on the DVR to the A/V inputs on a DVD Recorder, or to a capture card on a PC, and Play the show, and record in real-time on the DVD or PC, but if the show is say a World Cup Game, this would take 2-3 hours per. My thought is that the DVR is just a HardDrive, and the files have to be stored in an digital format, it should be possible to do a copy of some sort. I'm currently recording all of the WC games, but if I don't watch them right away, I'm concerned that I will push other programming that the rest of the family has recorded out, making me unpopular at home. Note, I'm talking about archiving for personal use, not redistribution or anything.

• What could cause Vista machines to degrade in performance?

  We have installed several machines running Windows Vista at a client site. These machines run the same set of applications each day and are not operated with by any user. They mainly run a 3D application for digital signage purposes. After a few months I noticed that several machines suffer from really bad stuttering. The performance is unacceptable. At first I figured it was faulty hardware. But after putting a fresh image on them, they run perfectly fine again. These are Core i7 machines with GTX 280 graphics adapters. They should be able to handle the workload without any trouble (and they do, at least for a while). I really have no idea how to track down the source of this issue. Especially since not all of the machines display the same issue.

• Why is my HDD not showing up?

  I'm on Windows 7, got a new 2 TiB NON-external hard disk. When I plug it in it doesn't show up on the Disk Management list in the Computer Management window (that you get by right-clicking My Computer and selecting "Manage"). At first I thought it was broken, but I could see it using a friend's computer. I've run a full disk scan using the official tool from Western Digital, no problems. I've formatted it and partitioned it at another friends place, I've even encrypted the disk fully without any problems, then mounted it and placed a text file on it with the word "hello" inside and saved the file. When I boot my own computer the disk shows up in BIOS. So the disk is not broken. I've tried changing what SATA slot on the motherboard I stick it in. Makes no difference. After all this: Why won't my Windows 7 discover the disk???

• How to convert poor quality bitmap image to vector?

  I'm designing a website for a group which has lost the original digital image for their logo. The only file they have of it is a jpg which was embedded into a word document. The image has everything possible wrong with it: Anti-aliased onto a white background where it should be transparent Image artefacts Resized downwards poorly. Lines that should be straight and solid aren't. I've currently used the wand tool to get rid of the white background, and stuck it on the website, but it's poor quality makes it stick out like a sore thumb.   In general, and understanding the answer may vary by manufacturer and model (and driver, and...), in consumer-grade workstations with integrated NICs, does the NIC rely on the CPU for a lot of help (as is typically the case with a USB controller, for instance), or is it fairly intelligent and capable on its own (like, say, the typical Firewire controller)? Or is the question too general to answer? (If it matters, you can assume Linux.) Background: I'm looking at connecting a device (digital television capture) that will be delivering ~20-50 Mbit/sec of data to a somewhat under-powered workstation. I can get a USB 2 High-speed device, or a network-attached device, and am interested in avoiding impacting the CPU where possible. Obviously, if it's a 100Mbit NIC, that's roughly half its theoretical inbound bandwidth, whereas it's only roughly a tenth of the 480 Mbit/second the USB 2 "High Speed" interface. But if the latter requires a lot of CPU support and the former doesn't...
