    I know I can assign different wallpaper for each monitor that is connected to my computer in Windows 8(by right clicking and selecting "set for monitor 1,2,etc"), but I don't know how to assign different wallpaper slideshow or different theme for each monitor. Can anyone tell me how to do that? It is quite interesting to see different wallpapers on different monitors, but seeing static wallpaper on each of those monitors is no fun. thanks

    I prefer the sound scheme of Windows 7 HP to be set to "No Sounds" ALL the time. The problem is, when I switch themes, the themes switch sound schemes also. I know I can go in and disable/change to "No Sounds" every time by hand, but is there a way to turn it off and keep it off, regardless of the theme? Thanks!

    I have an interest in artificial intelligence from a evolutionary standpoint. I want to experiment with it somewhat with a high level language like C#, however, I'm stuck on one of the most elementary problems with artificial life -- how to contain it? The best thing I can think of is a virtual machine. Where would I start to create a VM for my budding digital organisms in C#? How could I be sure they couldn't escape into the 'wild'?   • Shouldn't emesene themes change the emesene indicator icon?

    As it stands right now, I can't get the emesene icon in the indicator applet (or notification area, or whatever it's named) to change. No matter what icon theme I choose, even installing new themes, the icon is always the default one. Is that a standard behavior, or am I getting a bug? I'm running the latest version of emesene from their ppa (1.6-dev), on Lucid Lynx.

  • What does LAME text does in MP3 file?

    I see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 that MP3 file consists of MP3 headers interchanged with MP3 data. MP3 header consist of few bytes. But here is my MP3 file dump with ID3 tag cut. Header is highlighted with blue. You can see that "LAME3.96" text is highlighted with green. What does it does there? Is this a part of MP3 elementary stream? Or this is the part of some headers I didn't tag?

  • Do you use enums in your data applications and how?

    My practice shows that a general enterprise application has a lot of entities which's nature corresponds to an elementary enumeration. For example We may have an Order entity which may have such fields as "OrderType", "OrderStatus", "Currency", etc. referencing corresponding Entities which are nothing more than just a textual name bound to a key to be referenced. Using enums would look very natural here. But entities have to be defined in application code at design-time, am I right? While in we need to be able to CRUD enum value variants at runtime and use enums in server-side SQL queries (like stored procedures and views). What are you practices and thoughts on this subject? I am particularly interested in C#4, linq and T-SQL.

    We're in the early design/prep phases of transferring/updating a rather large "legacy" 3 tier client-server app to a new version. We’re looking at doing WPF over Winforms as it appears to be the direction Microsoft is pushing development of the future and we’d like the maximize the life cycle/span of the apps. That said during the rewrite we’d like to make as many changes to our data access/presentation model to improve performance as much as possible up front as many. I’ve been doing some research along that vein but the vast majority of the resources I've found that discuss WPF focus only simple data tracking apps or focus on the very basics UI design/controls. The few items that even discuss data presentation are fairly elementary in depth. Are there any books/articles/recommended reading/other resources recommended for development related to large enterprise level business apps? Any “gotchas” that should/could be avoided? General advice to minimize the time underwater

  • Image thumbnails flashes and then disappears in Windows Vista

    I have Windows Vista installed on my machine and I am facing this really annoying problem. Whenever I open a folder having images, image thumbnails appear for an instant and they are replaced by standard file icon. Argh... Points to note: Setting "Always show icon, never thumbnail" is unchecked Running Windows Aero theme (with transparency support) Have 4GB of RAM on my machine so memory is not a problem Please can you suggest a solution?

    "Disable desktop composition" flag disables Aero (transparent glass border) effect for the duration of the application's run, which seems like all there is to "visual themes", but toggling the "Disable visual themes" option doesn't seem to do anything. What exactly are these "visual themes"? How does disabling them affect the system? From what I can guess, a "visual theme" is a custom window border style around window content area created using hooks and WDM API calls, though I am prepared to be corrected.     I have what may be a pretty elementary Hibernate question. Do HQL (and/or Criteria) update queries cause updates to live domain objects? And do they automatically flush now-invalid domain objects from the first-level cache? Example: Player playerReference1 = session.get(Player.class,1); session.createQuery("update players set gold = 100").executeUpdate(); //Question #1 -- does playerReference1.getGold() now return 100? Player playerReference2 = session.get(Player.class,1); //Question #2 -- does playerReference2.getGold() return 100, or is it the same exact object? Should I make a practice of evicting all objects that are affected by an HQL update if there's a chance some code will need it later?

What is the proper way to go about setting up something like this? .htaccess? Have some api for writing virtual hosts? The application would still always map to one directory on my sever, I just want to give theme a custom URL.

  • Echoing a pseudo column value after a COUNT

    Hi Gang... Please don't beat me if this is elementary. I searched and found disjointed stuff relating to pseudo columns. Nothing spot on about what I need. Anyway... I have a table with some rows. Each record has a unique ID, an ID that relates to another entity and finally a comment that relates to that last entity. So, I want to COUNT these rows to basically find what entity has the most comments. Instead of me explaining the query, I'll print it SELECT entity_id, COUNT(*) AS amount FROM comments GROUP BY entity_id ORDER BY amount DESC The query does just what I want, but I want to echo the values from that pseudo column, 'amount' Can it be done, or should I use another method like mysql_num_rows?   • Is it possible to change the look and feel of remote X applications running under Xming?

    I am running Eclipse remotely right now, in Xming on my Windows pc, through an ssh tunnel from my laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. As seen below, it doesn't look that bad, but it seems that my applications defaults to the standard theme when it cannot find any others for GTK+ applications. Is there anything I can do about this? Also it would be nice if I could do something about the font settings to make it more easily readable.

  • Should I separate RESTful API controllers from "regular" controllers?

    This seems like an elementary question, but after a lot of searching around I can't seem to find a straightforward explanation: If I'm building a web application that is going to be accessed largely through a web browser, but that will also support some API requests in a RESTful way, should there be a large degree of separation between the two? On one hand, it seems a large amount of the functionality is the same, with identical data presented in different views (HTML vs. XML/JSON). But on the other hand, there are certain things I need to present to the browser that doesn't quite fit a RESTful approach: how to get an empty form to create a new instance of a resource and how to get a pre-populated form to edit an existing resource. Should these two different methods of accessing the system by funneled through different controllers? Different methods in the same controller? The exact same methods with a switch for view type?
