• How do I get Catalyst 11.10 with ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5470 working on an HP DV7?

  I have a HP DV7 with a HD 5470 512M card. Installation of the Catalyst 11.10 is repeatedly failing on a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. Catalyst 11.8 proprietary drivers were working well with Ubuntu 11.04. I have tried installing directly from the .run and generating the distribution specific packages. Nothing has worked. After installation which goes through successfully, the system hangs on reboot after the flashing dots. I have to replace the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get the X working. I have followed instructions as per the http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page wiki. Request for support to ATI/AMD gives the response that this model is unsupported on Linux by HP :). Updated 14-Nov I have reverted back to the open source drivers which work well enough for me.

  I have a question concerning the life cycle management of a/multiple project(s), more specific to the advantages/disadvantages of using technologies such as Maven. Currently we work in a continuous-integration environment but lots of things still need to be manually performed (dependency management, deploying, setting up documentation, generating stats, ...). My impression is that this approach often leads to errors, miscommunications or things just are forgotten. I know and have used Maven in the past but in smaller environments and I was always really enthusiastic about it. But I was wondering if someone could share some insights, experiences, pros, contras, ... about the use of Maven (or similar technology) in larger environments and for multiple projects. I would like to use the suggestions made here to start the debate about moving to the next level in project management!

• How to tile multiple procedurally generated textures?

  I'm trying to develop a procedural tile generator for a game, mostly for the ground tiles, instead of using "hand-drawn" tiles. To achieve this I'm using Perlin noise and a sine wave with multiple parameters, which already gives me pretty nice results. I don't want to generate 1 tile and repeat that one forever for one ground type, but I want to avoid recurrences, so I'm generating n different tiles. The problem I'm having now is that I want to tile the generated textures (smooth transitions). At the moment I have this: 4 256x256 textures. I thought a simple method would be to just add the positions of the different tiles to the noise generation algorithm, so that, when creating the 4 256x256 textures, it would behave like it would create a 512x512 texture, but that somehow didn't work as intented. So how can I tile those textures?

• update-grub2 not finding windows7 partition..

  I have Ubuntu10.10 x64 and after installing Windows 7 grub dissapear I log on with my usb to reinstall grub and now grub only shows Ubuntu... • Procedural Planets, Heightmaps and Textures

  I am currently working on an OpenGL procedural planet generator. I hope to use it for a space RPG, that will not allow players to go down to the surface of a planet so I have ignored anything ROAM related. At the momement I am drawing a cube with VBOs and mapping onto a sphere. I am familiar with most fractal heightmap generating techniques and have already implemented my own version of midpoint displacement(not that useful in this case I know). My question is, what is the best way to procedurally generate the heightmap. I have looked at libnoise which allows me to make tilable heightmaps/textures, but as far as I can see I would need to generate a net like this. Leaving the tiling obvious. Could anyone advise me on the best route to take? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks, Henry.

• Grub not showing installed kernels

  Although I have several kernel versions in /boot and having them in my grub.cfg, they are not displayed in the grub boot menu. Running update-grub seems to work, as it puts the kernels in the grub.cfg in /boot/grub.   I'm writing an architecture/technical documentation for an inhouse project and I'm becoming more and more frustrated with Microsoft Word as I seem to use most of my time getting things to align correctly. Word has horrible usability issues but I didn't come here to rant, rather I'd like to know whether there exists something more suitable for the job. The point of this documentation is to provide a "big picture" of the system, and as such I'm not generating documentation from source code but rather writing it all by hand. Are there any alternatives to Microsoft Word for writing properly formatted technical documentation with less frustration?

• Ubuntu 12.10 install freezes at configuring hardware

  I'm installing Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit) from a bootable USB stick. At first I had trouble with a black screen after selecting 'install ubuntu'. I added nomodeset and xforcevesa to the options to fix that problem. Now when installing, it hangs at 'Configuring Hardware', specifically at ubuntu ubiquity: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-17-generic Specs: Asus UX32a DB51 Intel Core i5 3317U 1.7 GHz 4GB DDR3 RAM intel hd 4000 graphics 500 GB harddrive with 25 GB sandisk ssd I'm trying to install Ubuntu by itself right now on the SSD. I made custom partitions (100 mb EFI boot partition, 4GB swap space, 20GB ext4 mounted on '/') I've tried re-downloading the ubuntu iso and creating a new boot image on my flash drive and it results in the same problem. • How to make Facebook like button narrower than 225px?

  I'm generating a like button with Facebook's 'standard' layout for my site via https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/ . I've set its width to 200 pixels, but notice that setting it to lower than 225 pixels has no effect, and the documentation on that page indeed specifies 225px as the minimum width for the standard layout. Unfortunately I need to make it 200 pixels wide to fit my site's design. Is there any way to force it into this width? (The site's at http://gwwc2.centreforeffectivealtruism.org/ if you want to have a play with Firebug, though the like button gets generated by javascript so you'd probably have to duplicate that page and edit its source.)

• Is there an (open-source) ReST-based blogging/forum package out there?

  The site I work on is almost entirely in Javascript, it just goes back (via Ajax) to the server for authentication, database access, things like that. My boss would like me to add blogging, forum, and commenting capabilities. I don't want to implement it from scratch and I certainly don't want to integrate some HTML-generating PHP atrocity. Ideal, I'm looking for a package that does all the backend work and offers ReST interface so I can write a Javascript-based UI that integrates nicely with the existing site. Does such a thing exist?

• How to make grub stop appearing every time I boot?

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and grub selections appear each time I boot. This happens on both of my computers. I have tried editing the /etc/defaults/grub to use default, to use the 0 entry, and ran the update on it. But nothing seems to solve the problem. • Deleted files not increasing available free space on Ubuntu (as reported by df -h)

  I am writing data munging scripts (python and bash), to munge data and import large quantities of text files into a database. I am currently in the test phase, so I am generating several K's of files and deleting them (the files consume about 20G of space). After a test run, I delete the files (sometimes without having imported into the database). I notice that there is a steady decrease in the amount of free space on my disk (as reported by df -h). I don't understand this, as I use rm * (in the data directory), and in the cases where I use Nautilus, I empty the Trash bin as well. Similarly, I notice that when I import the data into the (postgresql) database, and then delete the data from the tables using DELETE FROM tablename;, the size consumed in the postgresql data directory does not go down either. Currently, I have lost approximately 200G from hard drive, and I need to reclaim that - but don't know what to do to reclaim it - any ideas?. I am running Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS + postgresql 8.4

• How to use only intel graphics and power off radeon?

  I've been using Linux for quite a while in everyday computing and programming. But now i got this new laptop with amazing battery life on windows which runs pretty cool even while gaming. But for some reason on Ubuntu I get like 1/3 battery life and it gets hot even while browsing the web. I have the proprietary drivers for radeon, but I'm thinking about upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04, and I would like to know how can I use only the Intel graphics and have radeon always turned off? Since I do not need the discrete graphics on Ubuntu and I'm pretty sure my problem is related to the radeon sucking up my battery and generating heat. My laptop technical specifications are: Dell latitude 3540 Intel core i7 4500U (with Intel hd4400 graphics ) Ati Radeon HD 8850m with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM 8 GB DDR3L @1600mhz Toshiba 256gb SSD Ubuntu 12.4.3 If you need any additional info, please tell me :)

• Running external commands improved a bit

  Hi all, today we would like to show you one small improvement related to running external commands (e.g. generating documentation, running framework commands etc.) which will be available in NetBeans 7.3. First, have a look at the screenshot: As you can see, the first line represents the command that is being executed. In case of any error, this command can be easily copy & pasted to the console for deeper investigation (and proper bug reports ;). Also please notice that the Output window now supports background colors. That's all for today, as always, please test it and report all the issues or enhancements you find in NetBeans Bugzilla (component php, subcomponent Code).

  I were following the address from Coldfish on How to set nomodeset, but I don't know how to "save" the changes made to the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" I hit CTRL+O to save and get File Name to write: /etc/default/grub AND typed sudo update-grub AND hit ENTER.   Possible Duplicate: What are some good resources for generating privacy policies and terms of use? I am just about done creating my first web application. Since the application stores some user data, I want to make sure that I can not be held liable should something bad happen to the site. I googled around but I could only find boilerplate T&Cs for websites, not for web apps. Does anybody know where I can find such a boilerplate agreement that I can use? I realize that this won't be 100% security, but it's better than nothing I suppose.

• Organizing your Data Access Layer

  I am using Entity Framework as my ORM in an ASP.Net application. I have my database already created so ended up generating the entity model from it. What is a good way to organize files/classes in the data access layer. My entity framework model is in a class library and I was planning on adding additional classes per Entity(i.e per database table) and putting all the queries related to those tables in their respective classes. I am not sure if this is a right approach and if it is then where do the queries requiring data from multiple tables go? Am I completely wrong in organizing my files based on entities/tables and should I organize them based on functional areas instead.

• Having a list of rooms with theirs connection to each other, how do I find isolated room groups?

  I'm trying to create a small roguelike and went as far as random generating rooms and corridors. Each room is an instanced object and contain an arraylist of the others rooms connected by a corridor. I can single out unconnected rooms but how can I know the rooms that are connected only to each other but not to most of the others, forming an island? to illustrated better the problem here is an image from the console on a bogged level. Rooms 5 and 6 are connected only to each other. What algorithm can I use to detect that?
