• iPhone: [subview release] removes my subview from the display

  I have these two pieces of code. The first one works perfectly: UIView *tmp = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0f, 60.0f, 296.0f, 44.0f)]; [self.dynamicView addSubview:tmp]; [tmp release]; The second one is pretty much the same, but the view doesn't show up. CommentBox *commentBox = [[CommentBox alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0f, 0.0f, 296.0f, 44.0f)]; [self.dynamicView addSubview:commentBox]; [commentBox release]; // Why does this remove the view? If I remove the [commentBox release] the view surprisingly appears. But I don't see a different between these two code snippets. • Minifying Javascript on Visual Studio 2010 on release mode

  I have a ASP.NET MVC 2 project on Visual Studio 2010. I want to be able to use my plain javascript files in debug mode so I can understand what's going on when debugging, but I want to used a minified/compressed version when using release mode. I was planning to create some extenders to include the js files in each page, something like: <%: Html.IncludeJS("/Content/foo.js") % In that extender method I would determine whether I am on debug or release mode and pick the appropiate JS file. The disadvantage here is that I would end up manually compressing/minifying the JS every time I change something. Is there an automated way to compress/minify and include the JS file when compiling in release mode?

• Qt4 book says "make release", reality disagrees

  Writing some simple Qt4 demos depending the book by Daniel Molkentin. In that book, it says you build the release or debug versions of your app with "make release" or "make debug". In real life, these give errors. Only bare naked "make" works. I assume something has changed between the version of Qt4 used in the book and the version I'm using, qt4.6.2. So what is the proper way to determine whether to make release or debug? (And why can't google find any updates or errata for this book relating to this?)

  I recently attended a talk by a Sun engineer Charlie Hunt regarding performance. The talk was interesting enough but one question was regarding release date of 1.7. He said it's delayed as there are parties who are refusing to sign off JSRs they own and thus preventing the 1.7 release. It apparently has something to do with the cost of determining your Sun compliance. I would be interested to know the full story if anyone knows or can point me in the right direction. • Trying to understand NavigationController retain count for ViewControllers on its stack

  I have an UITableViewController as the rootViewController for my navigatorController. How? I thought when pushing to the navigationController adds a retain count and when pop from it release it? Also I believe if I'm not including the release after pushing to the navcontroller I'm generating a leak. Any idea what's happening here?

• Why use a Rails-like deployment mechanism over 'git pull' for releasing?

  To release my centralized webapp, I COULD have a vhost pointed to some directory and then just do a 'git pull' when I want to release, updating the files. But Rails has a different deployment mechanism: it copies files to a subdirectory and then points a symlink ('current') to that new subdirectory. I understand that it probably more acceptable to do a Rails-like deployment because the release is built in some directory, and then the symlink is pointed to that directory, so this is much faster, and it's less likely that users would experience weird issues while a release is happening. Are there any other advantages to the Rails approach? Or, is a 'git pull' approach actually more widely accepted?

  I’ve just started developing for iPhone and am trying to get my head around memory management. I made a small program that shows a map and an annotation on the map. For the annotation I made a simple class that implements the MKAnnotation protocol. To create and add the annotation I wrote this: [self.myMapView addAnnotation:[[MyAnnotation alloc] init]]; It worked fine until I tried to release the object. Nothing to release. This is what I would have done in C#, I guess it doesn’t work without garbage collection? So is this the only way to do it?   I was watching CS193P Stanford course on Itunes, and in one of the lectures a demo was given and There it was said you could present the viewcontroller modally and then release it. Roughly like this (I know this isn't perfect but I'm on my PC atm) [self.view presentcontentmodally:myVC] [myVC release]; However this seems to produce problems. If I put a NSLog(@"%d", [myVC retainCount]) between those two lines then it returns 2 implying it is ok to release. However when I dismiss the myVC the app crashes. Nothing in the NSlog and the debugger won't show where it stopped. But I used malloc-history or something that some blog said would help. And found that it was the myVC. So should I be releasing myVC? (also when the modalVC has been dissmissed should the app's memory usuage go back to before the modalVC was presented?)

  I am reading the LazyTableImages code that Apple have released and they do something to this effect (in an NSOperation subclass): - (void)dealloc { [myProperty release]; [myProperty2 release]; } - (void)main { // // Parse operation undertaken here // self.myProperty = nil; self.myProperty2 = nil; } My thinking is that they do this in case dealloc is called before setting properties to nil. Is my thinking correct here? Are the releases unnecessary, as self.myProperty = nil effectively releases myProperty? One thing I have noticed in this code is that they don't release all retained objects in dealloc, only some of them, which is really the cause for my confusion. Cheers

• SQL SERVER – How to Compare the Schema of Two Databases with Schema Compare

  Earlier I wrote about An Efficiency Tool to Compare and Synchronize SQL Server Databases and it was very much well received. Since the blog post I have received quite a many question that just like data how we can also compare schema and synchronize it. If you think about comparing the schema manually, it is almost impossible to do so. Table Schema has been just one of the concept but if you really want the all the schema of the database (triggers, views, stored procedure and everything else) it is just impossible task. If you are developer or database administrator who works in the production environment than you know that there are so many different occasions when we have to compare schema of the database. Before deploying any changes to the production server, I personally like to make note of the every single schema change and document it so in case of any issue , I can always go back and refer my documentation. As discussed earlier it is absolutely impossible to do this task without the help of third party tools. I personally use Devart Schema Compare for this task. This is an extremely easy tool. Let us see how it works. First I have two different databases – a) AdventureWorks2012 and b) AdventureWorks2012-V1. There are total three changes between these databases. Here is the list of the same. One of the table has additional column One of the table have new index One of the stored procedure is changed Now let see how dbForge Schema Compare works in this scenario. First open dbForge Schema Compare studio. Click on New Schema Comparison. It will bring you to following screen where we have to configure the database needed to configure. I have selected AdventureWorks2012 and AdventureWorks-V1 databases. In the next screen we can verify various options but for this demonstration we will keep it as it is. We will not change anything in schema mapping screen as in our case it is not required but generically if you are comparing across schema you may need this. This is the most important screen as on this screen we select which kind of object we want to compare. You can see the options which are available to select. The screen lets you select the objects from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2012. Once you click on compare in previous screen it will bring you to this screen, which will essentially display the comparative difference between two of the databases which we had selected in earlier screen. As mentioned above there are three different changes in the database and the same has been listed over here. Two of the changes belongs to the tables and one changes belong to the procedure. Let us click each of them one by one to see what is the difference between them. In very first option we can see that there is an additional column in another database which did not exist earlier. In this example we can see that AdventureWorks2012 database have an additional index. Following example is very interesting as in this case, we have changed the definition of the stored procedure and the result pan contains the same. dbForget Schema Compare very effectively identify the changes in schema and lists them neatly to developers. Here is one more screen. This software not only compares the schema but also provides the options to update or drop them as per the choice. I think this is brilliant option. • ADO and Two Way Storage Tiering

  Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 We get asked the following question about Automatic Data Optimization (ADO) storage tiering quite a bit. Can you tier back to the original location if the data gets hot again? The answer is yes but not with standard Automatic Data Optimization policies, at least not reliably. That's not how ADO is meant to operate. ADO is meant to mirror a traditional view of Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) where data will be very volatile when first created, will become less active or cool, and then will eventually cease to be accessed at all (i.e. cold). I think the reason this question gets asked is because customers realize that many of their business processes are cyclical and the thinking goes that those segments that only get used during month end or year-end cycles could sit on lower cost storage when not being used. Unfortunately this doesn't fit very well with the ADO storage tiering model. ADO storage tiering is based on the amount of free and used space in the source tablespace. There are two parameters that control this behavior, TBS_PERCENT_USED and TBS_PERCENT_FREE. When the space in the tablespace exceeds the TBS_PERCENT_USED value then segments specified in storage tiering clause(s) can be moved until the percent of free space reaches the TBS_PERCENT_FREE value. It is worth mentioning that no checks are made for available space in the target tablespace. Now, it is certainly possible to create custom functions to control storage tiering, but this can get complicated. The biggest problem is insuring that there is enough space to move the segment back to tier 1 storage, assuming that that's the goal. This isn't as much of a problem when moving from tier 1 to tier 2 storage because there is typically more tier 2 storage available. At least that's the premise since it is supposed to be less costly, lower performing and higher capacity storage. In either case though, if there isn't enough space then the operation fails. In the case of a customized function, the question becomes do you attempt to free the space so the move can be made or do you just stop and return false so that the move cannot take place? This is really the crux of the issue. Once you cross into this territory you're really going to have to implement two-way hierarchical storage and the whole point of ADO was to provide automatic storage tiering. • Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 GPO Conditional Terminal Services Client Redirection

  We have a lot of mobile/home users with different client side printers attached. Most of these users don't need to print on the client side and we don't want all of these users Terminal Services sessions trying to map their client side printers and we don't want all of these drivers on the Terminal Server. What is the best way to set up around 90 users to have no client side printer redirection and 10 users to have client side printer redirection (to the printers attached to their home computers)? Do I need to create two separate OU's in AD one for redirection and one for no redirection and create two different policies one for each OU? One GPO with Client Server data redirection Do not allow client printer redirection disabled and one enabled? Is it preferrable instead to change each user's AD User Properties Enviroment Client devices Connect client printers at logon setting? Is there any for me to direct "ALL HP Printers" to a single HP Universal Printer Driver, "ALL Canon Printers" to a single Canon Universal Printer Driver, etc without specifying hundreds of unique printer names in the printsub.inf file? • Hide annoying VMware hint "To release input, press Ctrl+Alt"

  I'm running VMWare Workstation 7 on Windows 7 x64. In the guest OS (also Windows 7 x64) I have VMWare Tools installed, but the VMWare Tools service is disabled. I run the VM in full screen mode and the VMWare toolbar at the top often displays this tooltip: To release input, press Ctrl+Alt This tooltip obscures a part of the VM (often the menu of a program I'm using) and it's annoying as hell. Going out of full screen mode and into it again gets rid of it, but only until I mouse over that toolbar and then it reappears! How do I get rid of it, once and for all? I tried adding hints.hideAll = "TRUE" to the .vmx file for the VM and to preferences.ini and neither of those helped.

• PPTP connection fails with errors 800/806

  I've got a client (Server 2008 R2) that won't connect to our production environment PPTP VPN server (Server 2003, running RRAS). The server is behind a firewall that has TCP1723 open as well as GRE. Other clients at our office are able to connect just fine. Our office is behind a Juniper SSG5-Serial firewall, but all outgoing traffic is allowed, and multiple other clients are able to connect to VPN servers without issues. I've also setup a completely different VPN server on another network outside of our office. The functioning clients connect just fine - the Server 2008 R2 machine doesn't. Thus it's definitely a problem with this machine in particular. I've rebooted it. I've disabled the firewall, no dice on either. I've run PPTPSRV and PPTPCLNT on the server/client and they're able to communicate perfectly - indicating there's no problem using neither TCP1723 nor GRE. The Server 2008 R2 machine is also running as a VPN server itself (incoming connection) and that's working perfectly. We have the issues no matter if there are active incoming connections or not. I'm not sure what my next debugging step would be; any suggestions? EDIT: The event log on the server has the following warning from RasMan: A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47). Verify that the firewalls and routers between your VPN server and the Internet allow GRE packets. Make sure the firewalls and routers on the user's network are also configured to allow GRE packets. If the problem persists, have the user contact the Internet service provider (ISP) to determine whether the ISP might be blocking GRE packets. Obviously this points to GRE being a potential problem. But seeing as I have other clients connectiong without problems, as well as PPTPSRV and PPTPCLNT being able to communicate, I'm suspecting this might be a red herring. Running Wireshark on the client shows it trying and retrying to send a "71 Configuration Request" While the server shows the incoming client requests, but apparently without replying: Given that this is GRE traffic, I think rules out the GRE traffic being blocked. Question is, why doesn't the server reply? This is the Configuration Request the server receives from the non functioning client (meaning no response is sent to the client request): And this is the Configuration Request the server receives from the working client: To me they seem identical, except for differing keys and magic numbers, and the fact that one client receives a response while the other doesn't.

• Can't Shut Down computer with windows 8 Release Preview

  I downloaded Release Preview and installed it. I have a problem when I shut down the computer. After I press windows key + I Power Shut Down, a box pops up titled "Winlogon.exe - No Disk. Then under that is the message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into Drive G". After hitting the retry button a couple of different times the screen finally goes dark. When I was going to turn it back on, I noticed the Power Button was still list. The only way to do a complete Shutdown is to hold in the power button directly. How do I fix this problem?

The description I found of how to do this on the Microsoft site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wx0123s5.aspx) don't seem to be accurate. This should be pretty straight forward shouldn't it? It seems that a friend of mine that does C# development says it is easy in his environment. Are the VS environments different between C# and VB?

• Strange Upload Problem on Hyper-V

  Hi, This one is driving me totally nuts. I have being trying to upload a file to www.virustotal.com (its a harmless exe I have since found out - DiskWipe.exe from diskwipe.org). Using IE8. From Win 7 and Win 2008 R2 Datacenter (which I select to boot from vhd's) onto my main machine hardware, and also on another Win 7 PC elsewhere on my network, when I upload the file to virustotal.com it works perfectly. So, using my native NIC's everything is fine. Using another machine also perfect. Right. OK, from my boot menu the default is my main development machine - the one I'm typing on now. This runs on the metal and has Hyper-V role and I have some guests. All guests are not running. Amazingly, from my console (root partition to be exact) or any guest OS 2003 /XP / 2008 R2 etc. My upload to virustotal.com slows at 32% then HANGS at 38.something% & never finishes!! Here is the kicker. I have another box (my main server) running Hyper-V on the metal and three live guests. Identical H/W to my main dev machine in another room. (Except OS is Datacenter - Mine is Enterprise). If I try and upload from its bare metal console or any guest this file to virustotal.com using IE8 it stops exactly in the same place!! As for "steps I have tried etc." are kind-of blown out of the water as my server box is doing the precise same thing as the machine in my room here. OK, comonalities: Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5, 12GB Kingston RAM, Corei7 920 4 cores hyperthreading = 8 & Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC's. All 3 machines have this same motherboard - revision F11 Bios, all have 12GB RAM, all have the Realtek Nic's. All x64 by the way as I mentioned before I have a Win 7 box also with the UD5 m/Board, 12 GB RAM - bit of an overkill. :-) All these machines when NOT running Hyper-V can upload this file. Perhaps you may like to try it on a Hyepr-v (2008 R2) yourselves with IE8 and the desktop experience is on. See if it works or fails for you. Root OS or any guest. So, looking like its the NIC + Hyper-V = Cannot upload this file (any file I must add.) Realtek Nic is Ver 7.002.1125.2008. Using IE8 I see in the nic settings there are the usual parameters for Jumbo frames / Checksum offloading etc. several others. Should I fiddle with these? I ran Netmon 3.3 in a guest and the TCP session halted as the upload failed. I suppose I could study that further. I dont have Netmon on the root partition machine (yet)! All OS's fully patched - including todays defender files. My box running Office 2007 - but identical server in another room is not. Also, if I fire up a VPN to a distant client and do the upload it works! Of course its a different network path. Suggestions welcome please. If I left out anything important - please yell at me.   I have a project I'm working on and looking for some info. Right now I have a VPN network using Cisco Pix 501's for the vpn clients and a Cisco VPN Concentrator 3000 for the VPN Server. Since the Pix is constantly connected to the vpn, I want to add a extra level of authentication. Meaning when the user on the other end goes to access anything on the VPN they are asked for a username password before the connection is established. I've never done this sort of structure before. So I'm not even sure where to really being or even if my current hardware can do something like this, or if i need to through in some sort of radius/LDAP/Active Directory type server into the mix.

MySql database is used as backend of ASP.Net web site Is it possible that web site was not active for a while and system stop mysql service? Update: It was mysql-5.5.7-rc-winx64. I could be an issue with this version (release candidate). Now I am trying to install mysql-5.5.8-winx64 And I have an issue with configuring MySql to work using name pipes I did uncheck use of TCP/IP protocol and configuration wizard just hangs Update: I have found workaround. • How to choose my own filename format for subscribed podcast files?

  I subscribe to several podcasts where the filenames of the downloaded mp3 files have no particular pattern to them. When I copy the directory of accumulated mp3 files into my mp3 player, the files play in alphabetical order. What I really want is to play the files chronologically by release date. I currently use iTunes on Windows XP to download the files. What I do now is manually rename the files, adding the date in YYYYMMDD format to the start of each filename so that an alphabetical listing of files will correspond to their chronological order when I listen to them later in PocketTunes on my Palm Centro. Is there some way to get the release date into the filename automatically? If so, I could automate or possibly skip the file renaming step. I would switch from iTunes to something else if that would solve my problem. The file creation time on my local disk isn't a reliable indicator because sometimes I download a few days worth of content at one time, and the files don't necessarily get downloaded in chronological order.

  I have a central server where I stored all the private ssh keys to the different machines that I want to ssh to. Currently, only sysadmins have access to this 'central' server. Given the above scenario, I like to ask the following questions: How do you protect your private ssh keys? I read about ssh-agent but I am not sure how to use it or if it can be used in this situation. If a sysadmin leaves and he copies all the private ssh keys, then he has access to all the servers. How do you deal with this situation?
