• Lost Windows 7 files

  My intention was to have a dual boot system with Ubuntu and Windows 7. Obviously I did something wrong because although I had a system menu on booting (is it normal to appear DOS-like?) which gave me an option of booting into windows 7, I was unable to do so. Also, when I booted into Ubuntu, my Windows 7 drive was not available. The Windows 7 drive was an internal 1TB drive partitioned into a 200GB (OS) and a second partition making up the remainder. I was still unable to access this Windows 7 drive even after deleting Ubuntu as I kept getting an 'requires an NTFS drive' error, or something similar. I could not even re-install Windows 7 as the disk was not recognised. I did eventually get the drive back by but I cannot for the life of me remember how. I did try to recover my lost W7 data using Ontrack Easy Recovery (which has always been succesfull in the past for post format recovery) but it would not recognise the 1TB although it was now formatted as NTFS. From other posts on this site, I gather that this is considered a 'Windows 7 Site' problem by Linux users. However, I would dearly love to recover some of my lost Windows 7 files. I had resigned myself to a lot of lost personal data but I happened to notice that a 2TB drive I had connected through a USB docking station had been repartitioned. It must have happened when I installed Ubuntu as I can think of no other explanation. I certainly do not remember consciously requiring Ubuntu to do this.   I've got some drivers which are basically LibUSB-Win32 with a new .inf file do describe product/vendor ids and strings which describe my hardware. This works fine for 32 bit windows, but 64 bit versions have problems; namely that Microsoft in their wisdom require all drivers to be digitally signed. So my questions are thus: Is there a version of the LibUSB-Win32 drivers which are already signed I could use? If there aren't already some signed ones I can canibalise, what exactly do I have to do to get my drivers signed. Do I need to get 64 and 32 bit versions signed separately and will this cost more? Is this a free alternative to getting them signed? Are there any other options I should consider besides requiring that my customers boot into test mode each time they start their machines (not an option I'd consider).

  I'm trying to run only the browser in the system - locking access to everything else. Only the supervisor can resume the normal functioning of the system after giving a password. This kind of activity is usually done by virus. Disabling the registry for Task manager etc. Does anyone know of any source available that does this? I might be able to pull it off in Windows XP. But have anyone tried this in Windows 7 ? The aim is to to emulate the Chrome OS on Windows. Only the browser. Nothing else.

  I recently asked a question about upgrading from 2003 to 2008, but i realised this is a lot harder to do, the only reason i want to upgrade is to have increase the RAM Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2 only supports 4GB Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 supports up to 32GB Windows 2003 Datacentre Edition R2 supports up to 64GB So basically i need to do an in-place upgrade to either Enterpirse or Datacentre without losing any data is this possible? • Windows Clients: Windows or Linux Domain Controller?

  I'm planning to set up a domain controller for our small computer laboratory. I'm a little confused as to what operating system to use for our domain controller. What's in the lab: The lab has 25 units running a mix of Windows 7 and Windows XP. The domain controller will only have 2GB of RAM running a C2D E7200. (Is this enough?) What we want: The Domain Controller will also be running a git server. The Domain Controller will also be used as a general development machine (mostly Java, PHP). A way to centralize the updates for the windows clients, so that they won't have to download the same patches from the remote site. The machines would just query them from the local domain controller and get the updates from there. Our head recommended that I virtualize a Windows Server 2008 system under a Linux host and use the former as a domain controller and the latter for development or the other way around. A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of using a Linux distribution or Windows Server 2008 in this situation would also be appreciated. As you may have noticed by now, I'm kinda new to setting up a domain so I hope you guys will be able to help me. Thank you.

  We have a lot of mobile/home users with different client side printers attached. Most of these users don't need to print on the client side and we don't want all of these users Terminal Services sessions trying to map their client side printers and we don't want all of these drivers on the Terminal Server. What is the best way to set up around 90 users to have no client side printer redirection and 10 users to have client side printer redirection (to the printers attached to their home computers)? Do I need to create two separate OU's in AD one for redirection and one for no redirection and create two different policies one for each OU? One GPO with Client Server data redirection Do not allow client printer redirection disabled and one enabled? Is it preferrable instead to change each user's AD User Properties Enviroment Client devices Connect client printers at logon setting? Is there any for me to direct "ALL HP Printers" to a single HP Universal Printer Driver, "ALL Canon Printers" to a single Canon Universal Printer Driver, etc without specifying hundreds of unique printer names in the printsub.inf file? • Windows xp mapped drives disconnect from Windows 7 on Peer to Peer network

  I have a 5 user peer to peer network. 2-XP machines, 3- Windows 7 machines and a Windows 7 machine acting as the file server. I have NO issues with the Windows 7 machines staying connected via the mapped drives to the "server". However, once a day the 2 XP machines will not connect to the Windows 7 machine "server" via the mapped drives. I must restart the "server" in order to see the server and access the files via the mapped drives or Explorer. I have tried the persistent : yes command in NET USE, on the XP machines and also setting a static IP address on the "server". I've turned the firewall off on the "server:, no difference so I turned the firewall back on. No interruption occurs with the internet when this happens, just can't see the server. Again, the Windows 7 users are unaffected. I have gone into the advanced network settings on the "server" and added read/write permissions for Everyone as well as the users of the XP machines. I have double checked that we are all on the same WORKGROUP. I'm at a loss. It seems to happen around mid-day and I've not been able to find any activity that is happening at this time (Like someone plugging in a thumbdrive). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my client is running old XP software he no longer has the disks for and needs for his engineering firm.

• Linux clients and Windows Servers can connect but not windows clients

  This is driving me insane because I can't make head or tails of it. We have two DCs (W2K3 SP1) and I'v tried this once on each machine as a sanity check. DHCP is being served by either one of the machines and all machines get an address no problem. The servers can connect/ping/browse to the www and so can all our linux clients. But NONE of our windows clients (all windows 7). I can do anything within the network, I can even ping the firewall/router but nothing from the windows clients is leaving the confines of our subnet. I don't get it. The linux and windows clients are both served from the same DHCP server, the gateway is the same, everything is the same. Anyone care to take a shot at how to resolve this? I tried adding explicit routes at the clients, but still no go. TIA SMIM

When I am opening a part or diagram in Catia along with CNEXT .exe (catia service) wisptis.exe is starting and making the system halt and Catia will crash. So I need to restart the worksation or I need to close all applications then I need to open catia then again the same problem. So please tell me how to avoid this or stop the wisptis.exe service.   I realised that in disk cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) there is an item "Thumbnails": Windows keeps a copy of all of your picture, video, and document thumbnails so they can be displayed quickly when you open a folder. If you delete these thumbnails, they will be automatically recreated as needed. I was pondering about why there is even an option to delete the thumbnails. Is it true that there will be "dead" thumbnails (for example if I delete a folder that has a thumbnail and the folder is deleted but the thumbnail still exists) so this option is used to clean "dead" thumbnails?

• NX Client for Windows 7 Opens Remote Desktop in Multiple Windows

  What I'm trying to do: access my Ubuntu desktop remotely via NX Client on my Windows 7 laptop. My environment: server: Ubuntu 10.10 on AMD 1Ghz/512MB RAM PC client: Windows 7 on ThinkPad sl510 Software: server is running NXServer 3.4.0. Using xfce4 window manager. Laptop is using NXClient for Windows In my NX Client "Desktop" settings I've selected "Unix" and "Custom" for OS and environment. I've also specified "startxfce4" as the application to launch when NX connects. I am able to authenticate an NX session on my laptop. By this I mean, I can start the client on my laptop, enter credentials for my Linux user, and NX establishes a connection to the server and attempts to open a remote desktop window. The problem, though, is that this remote desktop is "fragmented" into many Windows. One window will display the bulk of my desktop (complete with desktop icons for "Home," "File System," and "Trash") while another window will contain the taskbar, and another window will contain the application strip. I can select each of these Windows individually, but I cannot click on any objects within them. I've searched Super User, Ubuntu Forums, NX help, Server Fault, and tried many Google searches - none have turned up another case of this particular problem. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I might try? I'm guessing the problem has to do with my xfce config files, but I've only just setup this server - it's been a long time since I've used Linux and there's a lot I just don't know. What I am NOT trying to do: use Desktop sharing from Ubuntu, whereby I VNC into a desktop that I've already established on the server. I am trying to configure this Linux box as a headless server that I can stash someplace out-of-the-way in my house, then interact with through my laptop. I don't want to have a monitor or keyboard connected to the Linux box. Thanks for your help!

I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

  My hard drive is failing. I installed a new drive, and the installed Ubuntu 12.04 to try to rescue data. Realized that I wanted to install Windows and just access drives without transferring data (there are loads of it). I then installed Windows 7. Now my drive only boots to Windows 7. How do I access Linux and make Windows boot-loader load Linux? I originally thought I would just not use the Ubuntu installation but now I think I want it to be a dual boot system. What are good boot-loaders to install for this kind of dual boot situation? Can I accomplish this with BCDEdit? If I would have done this the other way (Windows first, then Linux) everything would be fine, but I didn't and now I'm trying to fix this. The problem I have is that I don't really know how to boot into Linux to retrieve any files I need. I guess using the disc would work, but I'm not sure how to go about this.
