• About the External Graphics Card and CPU usage

  We are Rendering 16 live Streams at our client machine through one of our applications and the resolution of the video streams are as 4CIF/MPEG4/25FPS/4000Kbits. The configuration of the client machine is below. HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 streams. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise there has been no difference - even a drop in performance. So, what is the purpose of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage?

• Need to upgrade DDR2 RAM on HP Desktop

  I have this HP Pavilion Desktop. As you can see, that page says the memory speed supported is PC2-4200. It currently has a 512 MB stick - CPU-Z Screenshots: hxxp://i41.tinypic.com/j5clj6.jpg and hxxp://i39.tinypic.com/20tldlc.jpg However, a crucial.com scan gives a slightly different report - hxxp://crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=5718CFE831D926C3 It says the system can support PC2-5300 memory. So my question is which one should I trust? I want to upgrade the computer's ram to 2 GB (the maximum supported), because XP Media Center is giving me problems and I will install Windows 7 on this. PC2-6400 is the most common DDR2 memory I have been able to find here in the market. Will it cause any problems if I install 2 × 1 GB PC2-6400 DDR2 memory sticks (in dual channel) in this computer, (afaik, it will just run at the lower speed of 533 MHz, or whatever the motherboard supports), or do I absolutely need to get PC2-4200 sticks?

  I have Asterisk/1.8.13.1 Asterisk GUI-version : SVN--r Yes, quite old one, but I can not update it since this is installed on my Synology NAS. NAS is connected to internet thru router Asus RT-N16. I should use the following data to connect to the server: Auth name – 7499952XXXX User name/User ID/Display Name – nickname Authorization user name - [email protected] Domain - sip.beeline.ru SIP proxy server - msk.sip.beeline.ru I've also found the following string: [email protected]:password:[email protected]@msk.sip.beeline.ru:5060/7499952XXXX I've tested the parameters on my PC thru X-Lite and it works well (so, assume there is no any problem with the router, no need to do anything with router's NAS settings). But since I am quite new to Asterisk, I can not understand where to input all these data. Asterisk GUI doesn't have fields for proxy: Can somebody please help me with step-by-step instruction? • Sporadic disk clicking sound

  Hi, I'm having some unusual and sporadic hard disk clicking issues. Here is a cronological description of the facts. I'm using an ASUS P6T-SE with Intel Core i7, 6Gb RAM 600W Power supply and ATI4670 graphics, running Ubuntu 10.10. About one month ago my hard disk (SATA II Seagate Barracuda 1Tb 7200 rpm) started making a clicking sound: a sort of loud tic-tac, every second or so, when involved in disk activity. The system was clearly slower than before at disk access, but it was functional and I could not find any signal of trouble on the linux logs. I disconnected the disk and tried an older SATA drive I had around: no problem with it. Then I reconnected the Seagate disk, and the problem was mysteriously gone. Ubuntu booted normally, usual speed, no clicking. A couple of weeks later, the problem reappeared. I tried disconnecting reconnecting (as it somehow solved the problem before) without luck. So, despite it was a rather new drive, I assumed it was a hardware issue, made backups and bought a new drive. The new drive is a SATA II Seagate Barracuda 1.5 Tb 7200 rpm. I installed both drives at the same time, with the intention of transferring my files from on to the other. To my surprise, when I booted the computer with both drives, both started making the clicking sound !! Even worse, I removed the old drive, leaving the unformated new drive connected, and booted from a LiveCD. It kept clicking ! Puzzled by this, I tried both drives on my laptop with a SATA to USB cable. At the moment I connected any of them, they made one or two unusual clicks and immediately stopped doing that and worked normally. The old drive I thought almost dead, was working like a charm as if nothing happened. Then I thought: "ok, it must be the motherboard. Let's try again". So, I reconnected the old drive to the ASUS P6T motherboard (the same cables and SATA port as before), and it worked as if nothing happened ! The problem was gone again. The new 1.5 Tb drive was also working ok: No clicking nor slowdown. So I left the old 1Tb disk connected and kept using the computer daily during 3 weeks, until today it happened again. Now I don't really know what to do or check. I'm not even sure if it is a hardware issue any more ! This is rather annoying as it seems it happens with a period of 2 or 3 weeks and I have no means of forcing it to happen. Does anyone have a clue of what can causes this behaviour or have any suggestions of things I should check when it happens again ? What I did today is checking some SMART parameters Error log: smartctl -l error /dev/sda. No errors Short selftest: smartctl -t short /dev/sda. • Solution for storing sata drives outside of case

  I have a system that has 8 sata disks in a software raid 5 array using mdadm. My issue is that I want to move the drives from inside of the computer case in order to cool more efficiently. I have looked all over the web and only seem to find enclosures that hide the drives connectors behind an estata port or some other internal raid controller. Basically what I want is an enclosure or equivalent that I can run independent sata cables to and either power as well, or have it have its own power supply. I have the sata ports on the motherboard available and don't want to limit io by using one port with a multiplier or the like. One final caveat, I am a college student on a budget and don't have a fortune to spend on such an enclosure. Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

• Is the 4-pin PSU connector required? (Trying to connect a PSU to a mini case.)

  I am trying to build a computer, placing an ASUS P8H67-I DELUXE in a custom retro C64 case. The case is an extra small form factor which can accomodate the Mini ITX board, but requires an external power supply, similar to the power-bricks that laptops use. I am looking at different power supplies and like these, but cannot figure out whether/how to power this system because they provide a 24-pin connector, but the motherboard has a 4-pin connector as well. Is the 4-pin connector optional or is it required? If it is required, how can I provide power for this system?

• CPU?: Not responding

  I'm attempting to build a system for co-location. I've been running into issues while trying to install CentOS 6.3 System Specs: Motherboard: ASUS m5a99x Process: AMD FX-8120 (8-core Bulldozer) Memory: 2x 4gb G-Skill 2133 running at 1600 I keeps giving me an error message: CPU1: Not Responding. CPU2: Not Responding. CPU3: Not Responding. CPU4: Not Responding. CPU5: Not Responding. CPU6: Not Responding. Then it instantly restarts. I have tried installing it from USB, Multiple DVDs, Multiple Distros. I have also in the bios attempted to disable cores. I was able to disable 2/3 4/5 6/7. I have also ensured that there is zero overclocking. The system works fine in a windows environment. I'm out of ideas.

• Windows 7 Wakeup from Sleep then Shutdown

  Is this caused by low battery? I have an Asus UX31A, and I left it unattended. As usual, in 5 minutes, it went to sleep mode with the lid still open. I came back a couple hours later, and I noticed the laptop was off. I was still able to turn it on by manually pressing the power button (battery was at 2% though), but I don't understand why it shut off. If it was in sleep mode and the battery was near depletion, then wouldn't that result in a "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" upon boot? Does Windows have a mechanism to wake from sleep from a super critical battery level to shut down all programs and power down the system completely? I noticed that upon booting, firefox didn't give a fit about improper shutdown. Here are my power settings btw, powercfg -h off has been ran, so hibernation is off. • 4TB HGST SATA drive only shows 1.62 TB in Windows Server 2012

  I'm using a Supermicro X9SRE-3F motherboard with the latest BIOS and 2x 4TB drives connected to the on-board SATA controller. If I set the BIOS to RAID and create a RAID 1 array, the array shows up in the BIOS as 3.6TB. However when I boot Windows (on a separate RAID 1 array), the 4TB drives show up individually in disk manager as 2x 1.62TB drives. I could use Windows 2012 to set up software RAID 1, but when I set the BIOS back to 2x individual drives, they still show up in Windows as 2x 1.62TB drives. How do I access the full capacity of these drives? Thanks, Brian Bulaw

• Can I build a laptop from scratch?

  I've been looking at this as the same approach as building a desktop computer from scratch but I've never really come across the core things. Can I buy a laptop "case"? Can I buy a motherboard/PSU to fit that case? Can I choose a CPU fan? What are my battery options? Obviously taking into consideration the case. Why isn't this as easy as putting together a desktop computer? Shouldn't there be standards such as ATX? If they exist, what are they?

• What kind of SATA interface is on a Thinkpad X120E?

  I recently ordered a Thinkpad X120E with an AMD Fusion (Zacate) chipset. I am eyeballing an SSD for it, however newer SSDs are coming out with 6Gbps SATA interfaces. I doubt such a cheap laptop has 6Gbps SATA, but I'm debating waiting the a bit longer until the Intel 510 series come out, if anything to future proof myself by putting it in this laptop and then later on when I do upgrade to a laptop with 6Gbps SATA I'll be good to go. The hardware manual mentions that the motherboard is for a "AMD Fusion E-350" but the specifications of each hardware part isn't part of the manual. Does anyone have any information on the kind of SATA controllers in Fusion laptops so I can make a better purchasing decision?

• Recover data from phyiscally damaged harddrive. What are my options?

  I was trying to replace the power supply in my desktop PC and ended up physically damaging the data connection from the hard drive to the motherboard. The plastic shelf for the copper prongs on the hard drive broke into the cable. Here is a picture of my handy work: Picture of damage I went to Best Buy Geek Squad to discuss my options and they said that they will need to send it to the recover center it could cost anywhere between $250 to $1600 USD to recover the data out the hard drive Is this reasonable for data recovery from a phyiscally damaged hard drive? Are there any other options I can explore? I am going to talk to the data doctors to see what my options are.

• Intel Rapid Storage Technology - Raid5 is very slow

  Hi, I build a computer with a raid5, using the motherboards raid controller (ASUS P7H57D-V EVO - intel Rapid Storage Technology). The read and write are however very slow, when using the raid controller :( - I am using Windows 2008 R2, and when using the windows software raid, it was ok in speed - so there must be an issue with the controller? Im using 6 disks on 2TB each. Do anyone have any idea why its so slow, and how to fix it? I rather not pick the easy solutiuon of "just buy a raid controller" :| If you need more info about my setup, please just ask. Thanks :)

• Debian Squeeze: Trackpad on EEE PC 1000HA acts like slate

  I'm using Debian on an Asus Eee PC 1000HA. It works flawlessly, except that the built-in trackpad acts as if it was a slate. That is, if I touch the upper-left quadrant of the trackpad, the mouse pointer "teleports" to the upper left of the netbook's screen. If I touch the bottom center, the pointer teleports to the bottom center of the screen. I currently have no xorg.conf. I have tried various settings for the mouse in xorg.confs that I created, and none of them did more than disable the trackpad entirely. The trackpad works perfectly in Windows XP (shipped with the Eee) and in Ubuntu. Debian works fine with the (USB) mouse. Any suggestions? Thanks.

• How would you diagnose an integrated network card that doesn't show up on the device list?

  I've been setting up a server based around a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard (G33, PCH9R with integrated Realtek 811B network device. I've enabled it in the BIOS, but it doesn't show up in the pre-boot PCI device list, isn't recognized by Windows (even after installing the chipset and networking drivers) and doesn't even show up via lspci. I've tried cycling power, disabling, cycling again, enabling, cycling again etc. to no avail. I'm sort of at a loss at this point; the board isn't under warranty anymore, but I'd rather not have to replace it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

  I have been reinstalling Windows 7 over and over again on an ASUS P5lD2 2Gb Ram 3Ghz P4 because it ultimately loses the contents of "Turn Windows Features On or Off" after I install software like Autocad 2010 & Microsoft Office 2007. I get install errors like 1935 and 1704 on the way tried different fixes at different times (install software in different order to try and isolate problem too). Ultimately I force the software to install after much buggering and end up losing the contents of "TWFOOO" Should I be installing some older items like .net framework 1.1, 2.0 and Visual Studio items like vcredist_x86.exe? getting a bit lost because of compounded problems...

• How to lock the c prompt?

  Is there anyway to lock the command prompt? I need my computer to require a password to use the command prompt. I lock the workstation occasionally but sometimes I forget and if I could just prevent my roommate from doing the "c: net user user *" to change my password it would be great. I do not want to have to use the rundll.32 user command with script to automatically lock the computer. Just a way to lock the c prompt. Sorry for not saying this earlier, I'm running a vista 32bit Asus gene II motherboard with a core i7 CPU

• DVI to HDMI - displaying bad.

  I currently have a computer with a ASUS EAH5770 (ATi Radeon HD 5770) 1GB GDDR5 video card, and 4GB ram, 2.6 GHZ i5 processor. I just switched from a DVI (the blue one) to an HDMI cable. (Bigben Flat cable HDMI 1.3c) I use a Samsung SyncMaster 2032 MW, which has a HDMI input. The weird thing is, that my screen is off-the-corner of the tv (so it's too wide) (1920x1080), and windows icons and text are not displaying well, though 1080p videos in YouTube are looking brilliant, just like pictures. So i think it has something to do with Windows. I already have the ATI Catalyst Control Center with the drivers i received with my video card. I do not currently know how to fix these problems. Do i have to reinstall Windows or so? Or is it (hopefully) easier?

• Determining Namespaces Not in the ACPI Spec

  I am trying to determine how it may be possible to find documentation for namespaces that are not documented in the ACPI spec. I have an Asus uEFI BIOS v(3202) and I'm receiving kernel messages stating AE Namespace lookup failures for DSSP. This is referring to a namespace that is not in the ACPI spec. I'm presuming that this is vendor specific and refers to a Digital Sensor Signal Processor. That is only a presumption. In an effort to correct ACPI errors I have dumped my DSDT using acpidump and then decompiled it using iASL. Yet to fix the error I need to know the spec on the namespace. How can I get access to the BIOS documentation that isn't part of the ACPI spec?

• DVD ROM not working only in windows?

  I have an Asus N53SV laptop, My DVD rom doesn't read any type of DVD in windows , but I just installed windows 7 from a bootable DVD , I think this problem occurred after I tried to change my partitioning with paragon partition magic , I was trying to shrink , join and so , after that my windows showed an error that windows cannot find [weird address] on hard disk every time on starts. windows itself says the DVD drive works correctly and driver is working properly, but no DVD or CD can be read , note that the DVD I'm trying to read is the same DVD which I used to install windows some minutes ago. I don't know what's the problem

  Hi Guys, I've got the following computer and I've just put in a new CPU QX9650 and I've run into this problem since making this hardware change. Whenever I put more than 1 of my 4 sticks of ram into my machine it wont load an OS. It'll go through the BIOS but BSOD on windows load. It also wont let me install an OS from disk or boot into Linux. I've ran memtest with all 4 sticks in and I get 10k+ errors on test5. Each stick of ram on it's own is fine and functions properly. I only have problems when all 4 sticks are in the machine at the same time. System specs.. CPU: QX9650 Mobo: Asus P5B 2104 BIOS RAM: 2xPC25400 DDR2 , 2xPC2 6400 both OCZ. Is the problem on my end or is the CPU faulty?

• Server reboots every 4.5-5.5 minutes...

  Hi, I've recently installed a server in colocation, and my server is rebooting every 4.5-5.5 minutes. Regardless of the OS I run, it reboots. I have all ECC memory in the server, so it should correct errors if there is a bad bit in the memory, right? It's weird because it always happens about 4.5-5.5 minutes after bootup. My motherboard is a Supermicro X8DTL-iF. I read on a blog that another person had the problem, and supermicro recommended to do a BIOS update. Is this the right course of action?

• I have static noise in my speakers and headset

  I have been having a problem with my computer where I am constantly getting static from the point I turn on my PC. I have changed Towers, Hard Drives, added and removed a Sound Blaster Xtreme Sound Card, used 3 different Headsets, and 2 sets of speakers. Lately I have noticed random dips in my frame rates when playing games. Is there any possibility that the graphics card could be causing the static with the possibility of it needing to go in for repairs?
