• Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC?

  Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC even though I mostly use x86 things in it? What's wrong with me, and what am I missing? Majority of the things I use is x86 (e.g. DAWs, games, media players). A considerable amount of them, however, are x64 (although their x86 counterparts work just fine). I've tried using the same things on the same system but always ended up finding Windows 7 x64 working slightly faster than x86. I'm very observant. I even notice the tiniest window animations. System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93 GHz RAM: 2 GB x 2 = 4 GB DDR2 @ 332 MHz Motherboard: Intel D945GCNL Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4350 @ 1 GB Dedicated Audio: M-Audio FastTrack Pro HDD: Samsung HD753LJ 733 GB & Samsung HD160JJ 156 GB As you can see, my system is old.

• Windows 7 Refuses To Install To A Partition

  I have 4 HDDs in my PC on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3 rev1.0 motherboard on SATA ports 0-3 and running AHCI mode. Windows 7 refuses to let me install to any partitions or disks I select saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. I will get to the bottom of this, after I sacrifice my Friday nights and weekends to Microsoft (they don't just want my money, they want my soul). Keep tuned, if no one has the answer, I will find one. I suspect I have to rip out 3 HDDs so that the n00bs at Microsoft can actually deal with spinning media. Really angers me how paid-for-products are so inferior to Linux they don't even qualify to be called "software".

• Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

  I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

• Computer freeze at night

  Every night except one this week my laptop froze over night. I tried to check the event viewer, but there's no real help there. Tonight I'll do a memtest to check the RAM. And this shouldn't be a temperature issue since I can play game without any problem (Diablo 3, League of legend) Is there any diagnosys tool I could use. Maybe something that would write time down every minute so I know the precise time when it freeze? I have win7 and 8gb of RAM I installed myself Answer to comment:Asus N71JQ Unknown time, but it seems differents if I look at the last entry in the logs I have no information to tell you, that's why I ask for tool and not the solution. • NVIDIA Driver Crashing on Custom-Built Windows 7 PC

  I've got a custom-built PC with these specs: Fractal Design Define R3 ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard Intel Core i7-2700k with Thermalright HR-02 Macho Cooler NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 with Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II Cooler Crucial M4 128 GB SSD 1 TB Hitachi HDD G.SKILL Ares Series 2x8 GB RAM (x2) SeaSonic 520W PSU Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) NVIDIA driver version 301.42 Upon building the PC, I overclocked the CPU (but never the GPU), and there were no problems for 1-2 months. Then I started getting crashes with this error when doing anything that's computationally or graphically intensive: I un-overclocked the CPU, but that hasn't fixed anything. This is what the inside of my case looks like: I'd appreciate any guidance on resolving this problem. I did get some of the thermal paste on the graphics card when installing the aftermarket cooler, but there were no issues for a month or two. Update I did a clean install and the issue persisted - looks like it's a hardware issue. I will try removing/cleaning/reseating all the parts.

• XDMCP is slow any ideas? (looking for alternative remote desktops)

  I've been used to using RDP on Windows to remote to machines, and I've got an asus eee 701 which I want to use to do some *nix programming on. While the eee is a lovely little machine the screen and keyboard are a little small to use for lots of programming. I've tried using Xming (the free version) to remote login into the eee from my desktop using XDMCP (or even using a ssh session as a straight X11 server and no desktop on the eee) the whole thing seems seriously slow over wifi the initial desktop takes at least 5 seconds to paint (might even be 10 seconds I haven't actually timed it). So my real question is what do other folks use for remote control with a GUI for their *nix boxes? I am finding it hard to believe the performance is so bad over a wifi network (It makes the Mac IIs I used to use a college in 1988 seem fast) or is this just a problem with Xming and using say the Cygwin X11 server would be better.

  I have been looking into this for a while and have attempted quite a few "solutions" (hackintosh boot images, universal unlockers, etc) before I gave in and asked for help. I know this is extremely difficult to accomplish, especially with an AMD CPU, but it has been done and it can't hurt to ask. Question Does anyone know of any way to actually get Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) to boot in VMware Workstation 8.0.2? I know that Mac OS X is heavily dependant on hardware configuration, so I will post my PC's hardware below, if it helps. As far as I know it's only reliant on the CPU, but I will post it all just in case. • Question regarding IPv6 - Solicited-Node Address with a Link local scope

  Situation: A small LAN comprising a Windows 7 Ultimate x54 PC, 2 XP Pro x86 PCs and an Asus router.The Win 7 box has IPv6 enabled. There are no other IPv6 enabled devices on the LAN. In my firewall I see numerous requests originating from the Win 7 PC, which are for the Multicast address ff02::1:ff.... which is a Solicited-Node address query and has a scope of 2 which equates to the local link. As far as I knew local link addresses are filtered by routers, hence local link. Given that situation I'm wondering why I'm seeing these queries being generated to various addresses? Any ideas?   I'm using a Late 2011 13" MacBook Pro with an Intel i5 @ 2.4 GHz and 4 GB 1333 MHz ram. The computer has started to get older. I was going to upgrade the ram but since Mavericks come out, the ram problem just went away and now, it started to get slower and slower. So I was thinking of upgrading my ram to at least 8GB and my CPU. I have two question about that. As I have 1333Mhz rams installed by default, the motherboard should not support 1666Mhz rams. But can I use 1666 Mhz ones and if I can will it make any difference? Also is it possible to upgrade the CPU of my computer? If yes how can I find a CPU compatible with the other components?

• Windows XP not starting up anymore (BSOD)

  When I tried to start my computer running Windows XP yesterday, as I turned on the screen it was stuck at the "Welcome" screen. I had to reset it. After that, I got stuck at the point where the BIOS should load the OS - I turn on the PC, the Motherboard and BIOS post message shows up, then the blinking "thing" in the top left corner shows up 2 seconds, then everything is black. After I let it run for some time in that mode, it automatically restarts. I'm writing this here from a Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD. What can I do to fix this? How can I find out what is wrong? • Intermittent graphics issue

  An older (~3 year old) PC I have passed on to my younger brother has a Sony 17" LCD monitor and uses on-board Intel GMA 3100 graphics (supports Aero under Windows 7 and no more is required). Recently he has complained to me twice that after booting up the screen looks all 'fuzzy'. Initially I thought maybe he messed up the ClearType settings by mistake, but resetting that did nothing. The only thing that finally worked was changing the resolution to something else temporarily, then setting it back to the original native (highest supported) resolution. The second time this happened the same 'fix' worked. This is happening only intermittently as of now and is not predictable/reproducible. I suspect either the monitor or on-board graphics is dying. How can I check and confirm which of the two it is (or maybe something else you guys can think of)? If it's the on-board graphics, would I be able to keep using the same motherboard with the addition of a cheap PCI-E graphics card?

• Running RAID on an internal storage drive

  I am running Windows 8 on an SSD, and it's all running swimmingly, but I want to put my documents on a "normal" HD running under RAID 1. I have four SATA 3GB/s ports on my motherboard (my Windows 8 SSD drive in on a different 6GB/s controller). All four are used (1 Bluray Optical Drive, 1 Spare HD, and the 2 I wish to turn into a RAID 1 drive. In my BIOS I can only change settings for the entire controller, not just ports. So my question is: If I turn these four ports into a RAID controller, will that negatively affect the non-RAID hardware plugged into it? I.e. Will a HD or Bluray drive be slower/incompatible with being plugged into a non AHCI SATA port? Thanks.

• DisplayPort to DVI not working on Quadro FX 580

  I have a PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 graphics card with 1x DVI and 2x DisplayPorts. The DVI port works fine with both my Viewsonic monitors but I cannot get either of the DPs to work using the supplied DP to DVI adapter; all I get is a "no signal" on either monitor when connected to either DP port. The NVIDIA Control Panel shows that the second monitor is not connected when in fact it is. How do I get the second monitor to work? • Is there an easy way to disable this laptop's touchpad?

  Specifically, I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525. I'd like to disable the touchpad so that I can re-enable if my mouse were to run out of batteries (so physically breaking the connection to the motherboard or uninstalling the driver will not be the best options). In the Control Panel, when I go to "Mouse" and find the touch pad, there is no disable option. Any ideas? Edit: I am on Windows 7. There is a driver on the Dell site that might allow an option to disable it, but I cannot install it on Windows 7.

• Where can I find a good, tab-less privacy filter for my monitor?

  Hi, I have an ASUS laptop with a 14" monitor (12" by 7" to be more specific), and I've been looking for a decent privacy filter that I can use with for, yet I couldn't find any. The problem with the filters I've found is that they all use those ugly "tabs" that you have to stick on the sides of your monitor in order to slip the filter in. I'm looking for ones that are like HP privacy filter, where parts of it goes under the frame of the monitor to hold it in place. Too bad HP doesn't sell filters that fit my screen. • Windows 8 FN key doesn't work for brightness

  I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 and fn+f5/fn+f6 keys (for brightness) doesn't work. In fact, they work, but they can increase/decrease the brightness only 1 time. I mean - after pressing fn+f5 once, nothing happens if I try to press fn+f5 again, before I press fn+f6. This only happens after logging in. At the login screen and during Windows boot I can adjust the brightness as I want, but after login I can't. I installed the latest ATK driver and NVIDIA graphics driver for Windows 8, and I think that my problem is related to conflict with drivers. I tried to reinstall/delete some drivers, but it didn't help. How can I detect where is the problem? Thanks.

• how to debug BSOD irql_not_less_or_equal error

  So I'm getting the irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD. I tried looking at the event viewer for potential causes, and cannot find any. I also checked the CPU temperature in BIOS right after the error and that was fine. I've tried 2 sets of RAM chips already, both give the issues. The error doesn't happen consistently...it happens daily, but many hours can pass and it won't happen, or only 10 minutes can pass and it might happen again. By the way, just bought the parts and built the computer myself a couple of weeks ago. How to debug the cause for this? • Video has become blurred and smoothed out?!

  Hi, Since yesterday video and graphics on my Windows 7 desktop seem to have become smoothed out and blurred slightly and I'm not sure why. The last thing I did on the machine was play Fallout New Vegas for the first time. An example can be seen in the picture here screenshot - note how smoothed out the character on the right seems, lots of definition looks lost. It's really annoying and happening regardless of what I watch. • My 386sx refuses to start in cold days

  My old computer refuses to start in cold days. So, in really hot days (about 40ºC / 104ºF ) or even hotter, this PC usually starts, but in cold days, it wont. When the temperature is not in the "sweet-spot" the power light turns on for an half a second and then the computer turns off. But when it's really cold, not even the power light turns on, nor even a blink. Sometimes I use an Hair dryer, pointed directly to the PSU and that works great. 5 to 10 minutes is enough, depending on the ambient temperature. I think something is going wrong in my AT power supply. I can't replace this PSU for another because it has a non-standard size and connectors to power the motherboard. Does anybody have a clue about what it's failing in my PSU, so I can change that component (resistor, capacitor, ??, etc) and rock on with my 80386? Thanks

• Monitor has yellow tint when used with the graphics card

  I have an nVIDIA graphics card when used produces an yellow tint on my monitor's display. I tried with another monitor and it had the same issue. I then switched back to my motherboard's inbuilt graphics output (not sure what the technical term is), and the display seems fine, except I can't get the optimal resolution of 1440x900 to work. So is my graphics card's life over? Or can I get it repaired? Any self remedies without calling a hardware guy? Should I try with a DVI cable? I've been using the VGA cable from my graphics card to the monitor so far. Thanks for your suggestions!
