• Where does one get Visual Source Safe 2005?

  I would like to install VSS 2005 so I can work on a project that is stored under it. Does anyone have any idea where the VSS 2005 client can be obtained? It does not appear to be on my VS2005 install disc (although that is for Team Suite). I cannot get any help from Google. I have an MSDN license (AA edition) but it doesn't seem to be there. This is a real product right? Just to clarify preemptively based on some of the discussions I see on Google when I search for things like "VSS 2005," I am aware of the flaws in VSS and I still need to get it working; I am not interested in converting the project to Subversion; I am not able to transfer it to TFS; I am not able to upgrade the project to VS2008.   I have a Visual Studio 2003 web service project that I have to upgrade to Visual Studio 2008. After I have run the conversion wizard, I get this message: You have completed the first step in converting your Visual Studio .NET 2003 web project. To complete the conversion, please select your project in the Solution Explorer and choose the 'Convert to Web Application' context menu item. I got this message with another project, which was originally a "web site", rather than an ASP.NET "web application". It made sense to in that case (sort of). Why, however, would I not just want to have this project remain a web service project? Additionally, when I follow the instructions and select "Convert to Web Application" from the context menu, I don't get any feedback that anything has changed. Should it have? If so, what?

• Python Daemon Subprocess not working at boot

  I am attempting to write a python daemon that will launch at boot. The goal of the script is to receive a job from our gearman load balancing server and complete the job. I am using the python-daemon module from pypi (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/python-daemon/). The nature of the job that it is completing is converting images in the orf (olympus raw image format) to jpeg. In order to accomplish this an outside program is used, ufraw in this case. The problem comes in when I start the daemon at boot, if I launch from the shell it runs perfectly and completes the work. When it starts at boot it is unable to launch the subprocess command. commandString = '/usr/bin/ufraw-batch --interpolation=four-color --wb=camera --compression=100 --output="' + outfile + '" --out-type=jpg --overwrite "' + infile + '"' args = shlex.split(commandString) process = subprocess.Popen(args).wait() I am not sure what I am doing wrong. • AbsoluteTime with numeric argument behaves strangely.

  This is strange: DateList@AbsoluteTime[596523] returns {2078, 7, 2, 2, 42, 9.7849} But DateList@AbsoluteTime[596524] returns {1942, 5, 26, 20, 28, 39.5596} The question: What's going on? Note that AbsoluteTime with a numeric argument is undocumented. (I think I now know what it's doing but figured this is useful to have as a StackOverflow question for future reference; and I'm curious if there's some reason for that magic 596523 number.) • python threading and performace?

  I had to do heavy I/o bound operation, i.e Parsing large files and converting from one format to other format. Initially I used to do it serially, i.e parsing one after another..! Performance was very poor ( it used take 90+ seconds). So I decided to use threading to improve the performance. I created one thread for each file. ( 4 threads) for file in file_list: t=threading.Thread(target = self.convertfile,args = file) t.start() ts.append(t) for t in ts: t.join() But for my astonishment, there is no performance improvement whatsoever. Now also it takes around 90+ seconds to complete the task. As this is I/o bound operation , I had expected to improve the performance. What am I doing wrong?

  I am converting GTT's to oracle types as explained in an excellent answer by APC. however, some GTT's are being updated based on a select query from another table. Or in these cases we are better off using the global temporary table?

• How to retrieve a bigint from a database and place it into an Int64 in SSIS

  I ran into this problem a couple years back and am hoping there has been a fix and I just don't know about it. I am using an 'Execute SQL Task' in the Control Flow of an SSIS package to retrieve a 'bigint' ID value. The task is supposed to place this in an Int64 SSIS variable but I getting the error: "The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::AuditID" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object." When I brought this to MS' attention a couple years back they stated that I had to 'work around' this by placing the bigint into an SSIS object variable and then converting the value to Int64 as needed. • Crystal Reports and WMF image

  I have a problem with inserting a vector graphics (WMF) into report (Crystal Reports v10.5 from Visual Studio 2008). The image is static, inserted by choosing "Insert Picture" during report design in VS. The problem is that it displays differently (size and aspect ratio) on machines with different operating systems and screen resolutions. Converting to bitmap isn't possible beacause loss of the quality of print isn't acceptable. I thought about dynamic loading of the image, but in this version of CR. I don't see a possibility to set dynamic graphic location in picture properties. Is there any way to solve this problem?

• Ruby: wait for system command to end

  Hey all, I'm converting an xls 2 csv with a system(command) in ruby. After the conversion i'm processing this csv files. But the conversion is still going when the program wants to process the files. So at that time they are non existant. Can someone tell me if it's possible to let Ruby wait the right amount of time for the system command to finish? Right now i'm using sleep 20 but if it will take longer once, it isn't right of course... Thanks!

• google maps v3 distance

  Trying to create a new version of the map functions seen here: http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm but using the v3 api. So far I am able to set markers on click and can draw the geodesic polyline. The issues I am currently running into are: Updating the poly-line on marker drag I'm pretty sure I have to put each marker in an array and do a for loop so that I can keep clicking and adding points that will add to the total distance. Properly displaying distance. I have created a jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/wyZyS/ EDIT: I realize I have nothing calling the "update" function. I am trying to create the array for each marker currently. The calculation you see is converting meters to nautical miles.

• flex open source sdk compile error of samples on linux

  I downloaded lastest version of flex open source sdk. I wanted to compile some samples specifically explorer example. At first build.sh gave me weird error and with little search I nailed it by converting all bash files and mxml files with dos2unix. It is file type error. However now I get this error ./build.sh Error: Could not resolve <mx:Script> to a component implementation. <mx:Script> When I execute build.sh, some of the samples give this weird error. I searched this error on the net, their solution is to add -Duser.language=en -Duser.region=US as jre parameters. However, this solution is for Turkish Windows XP. My system is Pardus, yet another linux distribution.

• Security Token/Cross Domain Cookie in Classic ASP?

  I have an interesting conundrum. We have a site that is a completely separate domain, we'll say http://www.x.com and our own site that is http://www.y.com. The y.com site is actually a classic ASP site, and we aren't converting it to .NET at this time. The problem is that there is a link on x.com that redirects to y.com from a members area. We want to "authenticate" the user to make sure they are a member from the other site. If they are, they are directed to a members area on y.com. If not, they have to provide login information on y.com. Cookies obviously don't work due to the cross domain security, but is there a way around this? I've also looked at a service for tokens, but I'm not sure exactly how that works in Classic ASP. Any ideas or suggestions?

  what's the easiest way to take the intersection of N-many lists in python? if I have two lists a and b, I know I can do: a = set(a) b = set(b) intersect = a.intersection(b) but I want to do something like a & b & c & d & ... for an arbitrary set of lists (ideally without converting to a set first, but if that's the easiest / most efficient way, I can deal with that.) I.e. I want to write a function intersect(*args) that will do it for arbitrarily many sets efficiently. What's the easiest way to do that? EDIT: My own solution is reduce(set.intersection, [a,b,c]) -- is that good? thanks.

• iPad: How Do I Limit the Number of Tabs in UITabBarController?

  I'm converting an iPhone app to a universal app, which leaves me with a UITabBarController as the root view controller for a UISplitViewController. That is, the tab bar appears at the bottom of the left-hand view when the iPad is in landscape mode. On the iPhone, the system automatically limited the number of tabs shown in the tab bar to 5. But on the iPad simulator (which is all I have at the moment), my tab bar has 8 tabs, including the More tab. What gives? Thanks. Update: Since I had no luck finding an answer to this question, I gave up on using a tab bar interface in my iPad-flavored app. Instead, I added one more level to the navigation controller drill-down. That ends up working fine for this app.

  i want to normalize date fields from an old badly designed db dump. i now need to update every row, where the datefield only contains the year. update table set date = '01.01.' + date where date like '____' and isnumeric(date) = 1 and date >= 1950 but this will not work, because sql does not do short circuit evaluation of boolean expressions. thus i get an error "error converting nvarchar '01.07.1989' to int" is there a way to work around this? the column also contains strings with a length of 4, which are not numbers (????, 5/96, 70/8, etc.) the table only has 60000 rows

  I'm converting a MatLab program to Python, and I'm having problems understanding why scipy.interpolate.interp1d is giving different results than MatLab interp1. • Using a CMYK PSD without Photoshop

  I have run into a common, yet difficult problem. I do not use Photoshop for image manipulation. Since all my work is web-based, GIMP does what I need in 99% of the situations. The problem is that I occasionally receive PSD files with CMYK encoding rather than RGB encoding. These files will not open in GIMP, nor will they convert in ImageMagick. Has anyone found a good solution for converting CMYK files to RGB files (either PSD format or a flat format like PNG) that does not involve the use of Photoshop? Say a plug-in for GIMP or a standalone utility?

• Is Lightweight Code Generation (LCG) dead?

  In the .NET 2.0-3.5 frameworks, LCG (aka the DynamicMethod class) was a decent way to emit lightweight methods at runtime when no class structure was needed to support them. In .NET 4.0, expression trees now support statements and blocks, and as such appear to provide sufficient functionality to build just about any functionality you could require from such a method, and can be constructed in a much easier and safer way than directly emitting CIL op-codes. (This statement is borne from today's experimentation of converting some of our most complex LCG code to use expression tree building and compilation instead.) So is there any reason why one would use LCG in any new code? Is there anything it can do that expression trees cannot? Or is it now a 'dead' piece of functionality?

• Using GWT to output XML, JSON and regular HTML

  Sorry, this is a very basic question, as we are just getting started with exploring GWT. We would like to know if it's easy and possible to get GWT to "output" XML, JSON and regular HTML. I would like to know this because ideally we would port parts of our backends over slowly, and it would be nice to drop in GWT in place of AJAX wherever we need it during the transition period. Places that we would like to be able to use: 1) We have a pure XML page that we return to our client (mobile) app and right now this is handled through Spring MVC with a nice template. What's the best replacement for this? 2) We have a regular AJAX page that makes async requests and expects replies in JSON. Can we easily replace this backend? 3) We have some regular webpages where we use templates to output them, and we would like to first switch them over in the simplest possible way, without converting them to the regular GWT UI framework. • [C++] instantiating bitset using hex character.

  Hey, I'm trying to figure out how to instantiate a 4 bit bitset based on a hex character. For instance, If I have a character with value 'F', I want to create a bitset of size 4 initialized to 1111 or if it is A, i want to initialize it to 1010. I could use a bunch of if statements like so: fn(char c) { bitset<4 temp; if(c == 'F') temp.set(); //... if(c == '9') { temp.set(1); temp.set(3); } //... } This isn't efficient, is there a way of easily converting the string to a decimal integer and constructing the bitset using the last 4 bits of the int? I'd like to create an object relational data base schema from it for use with Oracle 10g/11g. Not sure where to begin, if somebody could give me a head start that would be great. Looking for actually starting the schema, show abstraction, constraints, types(subtypes, supertypes) methods and functions. • Target .NET 3.5 C++/CLI in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2

  Has anyone had any success converting a VS 2008 C++/CLI (vcproj) project to a VS 2010 project (vcxproj), whilst maintaining .NET 3.5 as the target framework? I haven't been able to do this and get the project to build successfully. The project compiles fine in VS2008 as .NET 3.5, and fine in VS2010 as .NET 4.0, but I am unable to target .NET 3.5 in 2010. The IDE doesn't seem to provide an option for it, and modifying the vcxproj file by adding <TargetFrameworkVersion>v3.5</TargetFrameworkVersion> causes compilation to fail with the folling error: Error 1 error C1001: An internal error has occurred in the compiler. According to this link, there is apparently some differences in compilers used between VS2008 and 2010, but manually editing the project file was still suggested as a solution. Does anyone have any idea on this?

What is that syntax even called (so I can scour google)? When was this standard phased out? Any info is appreciated.

• How to convert a C++ program that uses CUDA into MEX

  For work, I am converting the Image Denoising program that comes with the CUDA SDK into a MATLAB program. As far as I know, I have made all the necessary changes required by MATLAB, but when I try to call mex on it, MATLAB returns a bunch of linkage errors that I have no idea how to fix. If anyone has any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong, I would greatly appreciate it. The command I am giving MATLAB is: mex imageDenoisingGL.cpp -I..\..\common\inc -IC:\CUDA\include -L..\..\common\lib -lglut32 And the output from MATLAB is a bunch of these: imageDenoisingGL.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol __imp__cutCheckCmdLineFlag@12 referenced in function "void __cdecl __cutilExit(int,char * *)" (?__cutilExit@@YAXHPAPAD@Z) I am running: Windows XP x32 Visual Studio 2005 MATLAB 2007a
