  Hi all, I have upgraded my gallery2 to gallery3, and notice that some links no longer resolve correctly. Since the proper way is to redirect these with a 301, that is the way I'm going. The following series need redirecting: folders: old: http://photo.meulie.net/v/various/Gry/ new: http://photo.meulie.net/various/Gry/ pages: old: http://photo.meulie.net/v/Jacob/02112008310.jpg.html new: http://photo.meulie.net/Jacob/02112008310 (both are of course just examples. there are 100's of folders & files to redirect...) I think there were/are also direct links to images, but those I'm not bothering with for now. Who can help me out? :-) Regards, Evert

• Price comparison sites and its effect on Google ranking

  I am the webmaster of a website that contains roughly 10,000 products. I would be possibly interested to index those products in a price comparison site like PriceGrabber, Nextag, Shopbot, etc. The principle of price comparison sites is great for an actual user that want to compare prices but my main concern is the effect it could have on my actual ranking on Google... Since a site like Shopbot uses a CPC model (Cost-per-click), all the links on the website are builted to track clicks (IE: http://www.shopbot.ca/r.html?i=3&catc=2&refshop=5706&refshopcodeid=42587349), it uses redirection, no direct links (So no direct backlinking). In your opinion and/or experience, is this a smart, business wise, seo wise move or not? THANKS!

  I am a wondering if there is a recommended "best practice" for a product search SEO. I know to create a dynamic sitemap file that lists links to all products in the site. However, I want to implement a a bookmark-able "advanced search". Should I let search engines index any of the results? Take the following parameters for a search on a make believe used car website: minprice (minimum price in dollars) maxprice (maximum price in dollars) make (honda, audi, volvo) model (accord, A4, S40) minyear (minimum model year) maxyear (maximum model year) minmileage (minimum mileage) maxmileage (maximum mileage) Given these parameters, there could be an infinite number of search combinations: Price Between $10,000 and $20,000 /search?minprice=10000&maxprice&20000 Audis with less than 50k miles /search?model=audi&maxmileage=50000 More than 100,000 miles and less than $5,000 /search?minmileage=100000&maxprice=5000 etc. Over time, there may be inbound links to a variety of these types of searches, yet they are all slices of the same data. Should I allow for all of these searches to be indexed?

• CSS Style Element if it does not contain another specific type of Element [migrated]

  My CSS includes the following: #mainbody a[href ^='http'] { background:transparent url('/images/icons/external.svg') no-repeat top right; padding-right: 12px; } This places an "external" icon next to links that start with "http" (all internal site links are relative). Works perfectly except if I link an Image, it also get this icon. For example: <a href='http://example.com'><img src='whatever.jpg'/></a> would also get the "external" icon next to the image. I can live with this if necessary, but would like to eliminate it. This must be implement in CSS (no JS); must not require any special IDs, Classes, styling in the html for the image or anchor around the image. Is this possible?

• How to Roll Back to Original Plymouth Splash

  The title says it all. It's a bit of an eyesore with propriety NVIDIA drivers, so I tried here. I'm pretty sure I reversed all settings, when it did not work for me. But now: sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth Returns error: update-alternatives: error: cannot stat file '/lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth': Too many levels of symbolic links I just wanna revert back to the vanilla 12.04 LTS Plymouth splash. Thanks. Also: sudo gedit /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth Returns: "The number of followed links is limited and the actual file could not be found within this limit."

• Help with creating symbolic link

  I'm a little bit confused with how the symbolic links work. I hope someone can guide me in the right direction. I want to put a demo online from our software, which normally only runs locally on a Mac Mini. So I put all the files in the var/www from my Ubuntu 12.04 server installation. There are a lot of hardcoded links in the software which point to "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/narrowcasting" Of course I can change all these code on my html/php files in /var/www, but that would be quite annoying. I hope I can fix this by creating a symbolic link. For example I have a directory called thumb in /var/www/thumb. The php code is trying to put a image in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/narrowcasting/thumb. Can anyone give me a tip how to achieve this with a symbolic link? Thanks in advance.

  I've had a Wordpress.com weblog for 3 years. And its pages have a good pagerank and are shown in first search results pages. Because of the limitations, I should migrate to my own WordPress. How to migrate safely with the minimum SEO problems? (I know how to export content in wordpress.com and import it to a new wordpress.org blog.) Note 1: links structure and site design are different on the new wordpress blog. (I don't like wordpress.com links structure :| ) Note 2: as you know, it's not possible to edit .htaccess file on wordpress.com. so I can't use 301 redirects.

• Ubuntu btrfs: how to remove rootflags=subvol=@ from grub.cfg

  When i mount "btrfs" as a root filesytem, the mount info is as below: root@ubuntu1304Btrfs:~# mount /dev/mapper/ubuntu1304Btrfs--vg-root on / type btrfs (rw,subvol=@) Is there a way to have a mount info without the "subvol" information ? I have tried executing what was mentioned here. I also updated the grub.cfg. Still rootflags=subvol=@ is not removed. • Will small random dynamic snippets break caching

  I am busy writing a WordPress plugin. Now most users have cache plugins installed, they cache the pages. I know also some webservers as nginx have php caching and whatnot. There are also things like memcached. Now I have to admit I do not know exactly how they work, if anyone have some good links on how they work I would be glad. Some links where it's explained simple, not to technical. Now the question. My plugin displays different statistics on posts, they are always different, will this break the caching of the page. To take is a step further, sometimes the statistics of the post needs updating, and there is a small javascript snippet added to the page. Now will these two action result in the page not caching, or am I ok.

• What is the need for 'discoverability' in a REST API when the clients are not advanced enough to make use of it anyway?

  The various talks I have watched and tutorials I scanned on REST seem to stress something called 'discoverability'. To my limited understanding, the term seems to mean that a client should be able to go to http://URL - and automatically get a list of things it can do. What I am having trouble understanding - is that 'software clients' are not human beings. They are just programs that do not have the intuitive knowledge to understand what exactly to do with the links provided. Only people can go to a website and make sense of the text and links presented and act on it. So what is the point of discoverability, when the client code that accesses such discoverable URLs cannot actually do anything with it, unless the human developer of the client actually experiments with the resources presented? This looks like the exact same thing as defining the set of available functions in a Documentation manual, just from a different direction and actually involving more work for the developer. Why is this second approach of pre-defining what can be done in a document external to the actual REST resources, considered inferior?

• Quicktips 1: Windows 7 Libraries; New website

  I’m working on several large posts right now. So in the interim, I’ve decided to do shorter posts that contain something I find very helpful. This is the first. I’ve been using Windows 7 since April 2010. It’s the first OS I’ve ever worked with that I actually enjoy. I’ve used many over the years (KERNAL; PC DOS; MS-DOS 3.x+; Windows 3.0, 3.11, 95, 98, 98 SE, Me, NT 3.51, NT 4, 2000, XP, Vista, 7; various GNU/Linux distros starting with Debian 1.2 – most recently Ubuntu 10.04; ProDOS, Mac OS 9.X, Mac OS X (through 10.4); SunOS, Solaris; AIX, z/OS; OpenVMS). Some were frustrating. Some tolerable. Some were “nice except for…”. OS X actually started out as seemingly “nice” until every single release contained a breaking change to some major API and they then decided to flip-off everyone who had bought a Mac as little as two years earlier with the release of Snow Leopard without PPC support. Windows 7 is the first one that’s just “nice” without any qualifiers. There are so many little features that add up to make it nice. Today’s Quicktip is one of them. Quicktip 1: Create a Library for your Code One thing I particularly like about Windows 7 is the Libraries feature in Explorer. Specifically the fact that you can create custom ones. I used to spend a lot of time opening new Explorer windows and navigating my various Visual Studio projects folders. Custom libraries allowed me to simplify that whole process. I now simply go to my “Code” library and there it all is. Adding a new library is easy. Open an Explorer window. If you aren’t in your Libraries when it opens, navigate to Libraries. Click the “New library” button. Give it a name. Then right click on the new library you created and go to “Properties”. Click the “Include a folder…” button. Choose the folder you want and press “Include folder”. Voilà! If you wish to add more, simply click “Include a folder…” again and repeat. It’s true that this is just a small time saver. But it’s one of those things that just adds a really nice touch. ------------------------ In a separate note, just before Christmas I finally finished and published my new website: http://www.bobtacoindustries.com/ . I waited to post here about it until I found time to incorporate a few things I hadn’t had the time to do when I pushed it out for its “soft open”. Most of them are now done and so my site is now formally open. I have no plans or intentions of moving my blog ( http://blog.bobtacoindustries.com/ points here). I quite like it here, both in terms of the interface and also in terms of the concept (and realization thereof) of pooling geek bloggers to create a pool of knowledge and helpful tips, tricks, techniques, and advice. I created it simply because I felt that it was time to have a website as I venture further into my return to the land of software development. The “For Devs” section should hopefully be useful to developers, particularly the links section. It’s my curated list of sites that I regularly visit to solve problems, to help answer questions on Twitter and the AppHub forums, and to learn new things. I’ll be adding links to it periodically and will be including topic areas as I become acquainted with them enough to form a proper list. WPF will likely be the first topic area added. If there are any links you think I should add to the existing topics, let me know! I warn in advance that I’m less inclined to add blogs; there are simply too many good blogs and I do not want to have hundreds per topic area. So blogs are limited primarily, though not exclusively, to acknowledged experts in the subject area who generally blog regularly about it and who usually are part of the team that develops the product or technology in question. I’m much more amenable to including individual blogs posts in the techniques subcategory in the appropriate topic area. Ultimately, it’s a collection of things I find interesting and helpful. So please no hard feelings if I don’t add a link you think is awesome. I may well think it’s awesome too, but conclude that it doesn’t fit with my goals for the dev links area.

  I was wondering if there are some applications for downloading files from some popular hosting websites, automating the procedure of waiting and fetching links and downloading files, once we give the applications the links? Examples of such websites are Rapidshare, Uploading, Megaupload, Filesonic, Fileserver, Hotfiles, Depositefiles, iFile. But the applications are not necessarily applicable to all of them. Thanks and regards! ADDED: I just tried slimrat. It failed to download files from rapidshare. Can it be because the website of rapidshare has changed recently and the parsing functionality for their website by slimrat is not up-to-date yet.

• Make Browsing Safer for Children in Google Chrome

  If you are worried about the websites that your children could accidentally visit while browsing, then you may want to have a look at the Kid Safe – LinkExtend extension for Google Chrome. Kid Safe – LinkExtend in Action Before going any further you may want to have a quick look at the options. Everything is enabled by default but it is recommended that you disable the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option”. For our first example we visited “chatroulette.com”. As you can see in the screenshot WOT and McAfee SiteAdvisor gave the website a “green rating” but when it came specifically to its’ level of appropriateness for children LinkExtend gave it a “yellow rating”. Our second example was “hotbabes.com”…obviously not a good website for any child to visit. You can see that the entire window area has been totally “blacked out” and the available information for this site from each of the six ratings sources. The “Toolbar Button” is also displaying a “red rating”… Notice the two links at the bottom of the ratings screen…both will be visible if the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option” is not disabled (see Options above). You can see the difference for the links at the bottom of the ratings screen if you have the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option” disabled. Definitely much much better… Clicking on the “Find Kids Sites Link” will navigate the tab to the Yahoo! Kids website. The extension will also place “ratings buttons” beside search results at Google. As you can see in the screenshot below not all of the results had information available for them at this time. But it is certainly a lot better than nothing at all when it comes to keeping your children safe. A close-up look at the ratings for one of the search results. Conclusion While no browser add-in makes for a perfect solution the Kid Safe – LinkExtend extension will definitely be a helpful addition to your family’s Chrome browser. • Symbolic link all files in directory to show in another directory?

  What I want is to be able to display all files that are ftp'd into /home/ftp in /srv/ftp /srv/ftp is password protected, and has files in it which I don't want to be accessible from the public ftp. So as such I wish that all files uploaded to /home/ftp are automatically symbolically linked (or otherwise) to /srv/ftp. Does this make sense? e.g. ls /srv/ftp: file.sh another.txt something_else.i386 then a user ftp's and drops a file in /home/ftp (or ssh, or whatever) ls /home/ftp: user_file.mk ls /srv/ftp: file.sh another.txt something_else.i386 user_file.mk I hope this makes sense. I have been told that this can probably be achieved using ln to create symbolic links, but I don't want to have to ssh in and create the links every time I (or someone else) puts files over ftp.   I want to be able to stream audio from another webpage through mine, but i do not know how to find the url for each audio file located on a separate webpage. It would also be extremely helpful to do everything in bulk so instead of writing a separate line of code for each audio file, simply writing a few lines of code to upload links to 100 audio files, etc. I am also using Ruby on Rails for my webpage. How do you find a file located on a separate webpage? Does anyone know, if possible how, to upload file links in bulk?

  I want to consult you in an SEO matter which i am completely lost with, I've built a social mobile application that allows users to share text content and made all the content that appears on the application available via the web through dedicated links, however, those links cannot be navigated through the website but they are generated when users shares content through the app to social media networks. I've implemented this method on three applications with totally different content, and I've directed all generated URLs to be from the main company website which is http://frootapps.com so when users shares something, the url will change to http://frootapps.com/qareeb/share.aspx?data=127311. My question, which one is more preferable, a dedicated website for each app that uses such method? or it is ok to keep doing it the same way I am doing it?
