I tried to learn Linux with Ubuntu and misused mke2fs; after I reboot my computer, Windows 7 and Ubuntu has crashed.   I've got many softwares installed. But when the new version is released I'm not getting notified from the application that an update is available. And I found that in most of Ubuntu applications the Update option is not available. I should wait for the next release for an updated version of the software. I've been updating Mozilla using the packages available from their PPA. In ubuntu is there any way to update the softwares without using any PPAs? Please don't recommend Build from source method since I don't like to do all those weird stuff like configuring the things manually etc.

• Setting up wireless drivers in Ubuntu 9.10?

  I've just installed ubuntu to a notebook, deleting the windows xp that was installed before, so now nothing works I couldn't solve the problem of getting the blank screen with the versions 12.. and 10.. so now there is 9.10 installed, which works fine. Well, it boots up at least. I can't get working the drivers though. I'm totally new to linux, and I've read in some forums that in this version you have to install all of them yourself, because the system won't detect them automatically. Therefore I tried to find the drive for my wireless card, but actually I have no clue how to get it work. Could someone please help me out? So here are the specs: System installed as mentioned: Ubuntu 9.10 Computer: Acer Aspire 3100 Wireless according to laptop specs: 10/100 Fast Ethernet, Wake-on-LAN ready, Acer InviLink™ 802.11b/g Wi-Fi CERTIFIED I would really appreciate some detailed description to setting up my internet Thanks!!

• How to restore my D Drive

  I need help in recovering one of my drives from my windows7 machine. I used to have two drives, c and d. I used D to save all my data. i have been using my laptop from 3years. and when I saw it today, i cant find D drive on my computer :( . When I opened the parititioning wizard it showed me that the space I allocated for D is there but as unallocated space. I badly need the data from D.   Earlier today i installed ubuntu 12.10 beta. Grub wasn't booting, but just going directly to my primary OS Windows 7. I assumed i had partitioned incorrectly, because partitioning isnt my strong suit. I used boot repair because it was well recomanded off a live usb. Afterwards, grub appeared, but i only had options for Ubuntu, Advanced Ubuntu Option, and my hidden windows 7 recovery partition. Please help me recover my access to windows partiton.   It's first time when i use ubuntu.I downloaded and installed 12.04 version of ubuntu.It works fine but sometimes when i shut my pc down from ubuntu and i try to start it again,nothing shows on the screen.It's always black and it shoud appear Acer logo(i have acer aspire 5573)It's like the sistem is restart again and again but it can't boot ubuntu(or windows,i use dualboot)The meniu(where i can choose between windows and ubuntu it's not displayed because the pc don't start correctly.When this happens i shut down the pc definitively and i remove the battery and i put it again.Then everything works fine.How do i repair it?I think that could be a incompatibility with the pc because with windows everything works fine.Help please and sorry for my horrible english...Thanks!

• Is dual booting ubuntu and fedora/openSUSE as easy as popping in a liveCD?

  I wish to dual boot ubuntu (currently installed) with fedora and/or openSUSE (fedora for vanilla gnome and SUSE for a good KDE experience). I do not know much about dual booting and grub. Do I only have to put in the liveCD and install side by side? Or do I have to partition and stuff? Also, is there an easy way to remove one if I do not want it? Please note that I do not want them on the same /home partition, I want them to have a different one each. (and also if there is a way that is mostly graphical and user friendly, it would be most appreciated)

  When 'Update Manager' starts running, it tells me that I need to do a 'Partial Upgrade', when I start doing the upgrade, it tells me "Remove package in bad state The package 'linux-headers-3.0.0-19' is in an inconsistent state and needs to be reinstalled, but no archive can be found for it. Do you want to remove this package now to continue?" When I click 'Yes' the program just closes. I have tried to go into the software center and reinstall the 'linux-headers-3.0.0-19' ubuntu software center just freezes. Right now I cannot run 'Synaptic', or remove any software. Please help!

  I work for a company that produces enterprise applications to be used by schools and districts to manage all of their tests and standards data. Their existing application is written in J2EE and is very large. I personally am a seasoned PHP and Ruby = RoR developer and I have been asked to attempt to implement easily added but crucial features to an existing J2EE codebase. I am very familiar with Java SE and know the architecture of a web application well. What I am asking for is, will this suffice for the task ahead and what tips can you give me in digging into the code base and actually efficiently adding these new features? Is there anything important I need to know before beginning and what can I expect in terms of problems and issues coming from a Java SE, PHP, RoR background? Time isn't too much of an issue, I should have plenty of time to familiarize myself with J2EE.Please also note, syntax will not be a problem here.
