• Best Way to Generate Unique and consecutives numbers in Oracle

  I need to generate unique and consecutive numbers (for use on an invoice), in a fast and reliable way. currently use a Oracle sequence, but in some cases generated numbers are not consecutive because of exceptions that may occur. I thought a couple of solutions to manage this problem, but neither of they convincing me. What solution do you recommend? Use a select max () SELECT MAX (NVL (doc_num, 0)) +1 FROM invoices Use a table to store the last number generated for the invoice. UPDATE docs_numbers SET last_invoice = last_invoice + 1 Another Solution?

  Hi, I was going through an example from Programming in Ruby book. Thats fine. My question here is when i replace the parallel assignment with something like this, i1 = i2 i2 = i1+i2 I am not getting the desired output. My question here is, is it advisable to use parallel assignments? (I come from Java background and it feels really wierd to see this type of assignment) One more doubt is : Is parallel assignment an operator?? Thanks

  I'm working on a project that utilizes the USB Host capabilities in Android 3.2. I'm suffering from a deplorable lack of knowledge and talent regarding USB/Serial communication in general. I'm also unable to find any good example code for what I need to do. I need to read from a USB Communication Device. Ex: When I connect via Putty (on my PC) I enter: >GO And the device starts spewing out data for me. Pitch/Roll/Temp/Checksum. Ex: $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.987T26.3*61 $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.985T26.3*63 I can send the initial 'GO' command from the Android device at which time I receive an echo of 'GO'. Then nothing else on any subsequent reads. How can I: 1) Send the 'go' command. 2) Read in the stream of data that results. The USB device I'm working with has the following interfaces (endpoints). • Problem with keyPress in Mozilla

  I am usingtextarea to get some inputs. A label shows the updated chars left. It works fine in IE, but in FF 3.0, after reaching the max limit, it doesn't allow to delete or backspace key.   Hi all: I am working on a script, that needs to be run in many different SQL servers. Some of them, shared the same structure, in other words, they are identical, but the filegroups and the DB names are different. This is because is one per client. Anyway, I would like when running a script, If I chose the wrong DB, it should not be executed. I am trying to mantain a clean DB. here is my example, which only works for dropping a view if exists, but does not work for creating a new one. I also wonder how it would be for creating a stored procedure.   So most of the time my stylesheets appear properly. The standard/original one always works flawlessly, however it seems sometimes the mobile one is disregarded when looked at from a mobile device I have them designated as follows: <link runat="server" href="CustomStyleSheets/Menu.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="CustomStyleSheets/mobile.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="only screen and (max-device-width: 799px)" /> I'm using a Droid X to view the page, in portrait mode, so the device width shouldn't be exceeding the max-width specified above, but sometimes, randomly, it still reverts back to the original css page. Any way to keep it from doing so?

  Sorry to bother you guys & girls again on Christmas eve, but I need help creating a reusable JQuery function. I have "badly crafted" this set of code that all works. But I would really like to put it as a function so I don't have to keep repeating everything for each form. I am not too sure about how all the if statements can be combined etc. that is why I wrote it as it is.   I've got a huge bunch of flights travelling between airports. Each airport has an ID and (x,y) coordinates. For a given list of flights, I want to find the northernmost (highest x) airport visited. Here's the query I'm currently using: SELECT name,iata,icao,apid,x,y FROM airports WHERE y=(SELECT MAX(y) FROM airports AS a , flights AS f WHERE (f.src_apid=a.apid OR f.dst_apid=a.apid) ) This works beautifully and reasonably fast as long as y is unique, but fails once it isn't. What I'd want to do instead is find the MAX(y) in the subquery, but return the unique apid for the airport with the highest y. Any suggestions?

• JBoss as a windows service. Where can i set the JAVA_OPTS?

  hi. I'm running JBoss as a windows service, but i can't seem to find where i can configure the JAVA_OPTS to make it work properly. I need to set the Xms and the Xmx. I have tried to just run JBoss manually (run.bat) and in the same file i set the JAVA_OPTS= -Xms128m -Xmx512m. And that works. Here is my install.bat where i install the JBoss as a service: set JBOSS_CLASS_PATH=%JAVA_HOME%\lib\tools.jar;%JBOSS_HOME%\bin\run.jar rem copy /Y JavaService.exe D:\PROJECT\bin\JBossService.exe JBossService.exe -install JBoss %JAVA_HOME%\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll -Djava.class.path=%JBOSS_CLASS_PATH% -start org.jboss.Main -stop org.jboss.Shutdown -method systemExit -out %PROJECT_HOME%\log\JBoss_out.log -err %PROJECT_HOME%\log\JBoss_err.log -current D:\PROJECT\bin net start JBoss When i look at the info about JBoss Application Server (http://localhost:8080/web-console/) i see this info: JVM Environment Free Memory: 9 MB Max Memory: 63 MB Total Memory: 63 MB And i MUST have more Max Memory.   I've two tables, shows and objects. I want to print out the latest objects, and the shownames for them. Right now I'm doing it this way: SELECT MAX(objects.id) as max_id, shows.name, shows.id FROM shows, objects WHERE shows.id = objects.showId GROUP BY shows.name however, if I also want to fetch the episode of the object I can't put it like SELECT object.episode [...], because then wont automatically select the object which is MAX(objects.id), so my question is how to do that? If you haven't already figured out my tables they're like this: Shows id name and also: Objects id name episode season showId Using MySQL. Thanks!

• How to stream semi-live audio over internet

  I want to write something like Skype, i.e. I have a constant audio stream on one computer and then recompress it in a format that's suitable for a latent internet connection, receive it on the other end and play it. Let's also assume that the internet connection is fairly modern and fast, i.e. DSL or alike, no slow connections over phone and such. The involved computers will also be rather modern (Dual Core Intel CPUs at 2GHz or more). I know how to handle the audio on the machines. What I don't know is how to transmit the audio in an efficient way. The challenges are: I'd like get good audio quality across the line. The stream should be received without drops. The stream may, however, be received with a little delay (a second delay is acceptable). I imagine that the transport software could first determine the average (and max) latency, then start the stream and tell the receiver to wait for that max latency before starting to play the audio. With that, if the latency doesn't get any higher, the entire stream will be playable on the other side without stutter or drops. If, due to unexpected IP latencies or blockages, the stream does get cut off, I want to be able to notice this so that I can take actions (e.g. abort the stream) and eventually start a new transmission. What are my options if I want do use ready-made software for the compression and tranmission? I have no intention to write my own audio compression engine, really. OTOH, I plan to sell the solution in a vertical market, meaning I can afford a few dollars of license fees per copy, but not $100s. I guess the simplest solution would be to just open a TCP stream, send a few packets back and forth to determine their running time (or even use UDP for that), then use the results as the guide for my max latency value, then simply fire the audio data in its raw form (uncompressed 16 bit stereo), along with a timing code over the TCP connection. The receiver reads the data and plays it with the pre-determined delay. That might just work with the type of fast connection I expect. I just wonder if there are better solutions to reach this goal, with better performance (lower latency) and less data (compressed). BTW, I first try to implement this on OS X, but might want to do it on Windows, too, if it proves successful.

  I am building a framework that will validate forms both client-side (javascript) and server-side based on a form requirements specification written in json. The purpose is to get rid of logically equivalent code on the server and client to make the code more maintainable, faster to write, and less buggy. • Maximum File Size and Pixels for Uploaded Business Documents

  I am creating a php form that accepts an upload of business documents in a variety of formats .pdf, .doc, .tiff, .jpeg, etc. and I need to restrict the size of the files that are uploaded. It's trivial for me to restrict the file size, but I'm not sure if I should also restrict the max height/width, which are also available options. I will need to occasionally print these documents to 8.5 X 11inch paper and have them be legible, but don't really care if images come out. Should I restrict the pixels sizes or is that redundant with restricting the file size? If so, do you guys have a recommendations for max height/width for, say, a 5MB file size limit? I really have no idea what the relationship between pixel size and image size is or what the common pixel sizes are for scanned images. Also, what would be a reasonable size expectation for a legible print per page?

  I am using the version 1.0 release of Linq for nHibernate. When I run the following linq statements I receive the error not a single-length projection: Surname I can find very few references to this on the web and looking into the source it says it should never occur! ClientID is a Int type and Surname is a string. • Help with bugs in a C code

  This C code is giving me some unpredictable results. The program is meant to collect 6 nos and print out the max, position of the max no and the average. It's supposed to have only 3 functions - input, max_avr_pos and output for doing what the code is supposed to do but I am getting unpredictable results.   I have a SQL Query which works in SQL Management Studio: Select Id From table t Where t.Date= (Select Max(Date) From ( Select * From table where ReferenceId = xy) u) Reason is, from all entries with a certain foreign key, I want to receive the one with the highest date. I tried to reform this Query for use in NHibernate, and I got IQuery query = session.CreateQuery(String.Format( @"Select t.Id From table t Where t.Date = (Select Max(Date) From (Select * From table t where t.ReferenceItem.Id = " + item.ReferenceItem.Id + ")u)")); I get the error message: "In expected" How do I have to form the NHibernate query? What does the "In" mean?

• INSERT INTO statement that copies rows and auto-increments non-identity key ID column

  Given a table that has three columns ID (Primary Key, not-autoincrementing) GroupID SomeValue I am trying to write a single SQL INSERT INTO statement that will make a copy of every row that has one GroupID into a new GroupID. Example beginning table: ID | GroupID | SomeValue ------------------------ 1 | 1 | a 2 | 1 | b Goal after I run a simple INSERT INTO statement: ID | GroupID | SomeValue ------------------------ 1 | 1 | a 2 | 1 | b 3 | 2 | a 4 | 2 | b I thought I could do something like: INSERT INTO MyTable ( [ID] ,[GroupID] ,[SomeValue] ) ( SELECT (SELECT MAX(ID) + 1 FROM MyTable) ,@NewGroupID ,[SomeValue] FROM MyTable WHERE ID = @OriginalGroupID ) This causes a PrimaryKey violation since it will end up reusing the same Max(ID)+1 value multiple times as it seems. Is my only recourse to a bunch of INSERT statements in a T-SQL WHILE statement that has an incrementing Counter value? I also don't have the option of turning the ID into an auto-incrementing Identity column since that would breaking code I don't have source for.
