    I get daily critical errors from Kaspersky involving Explorer.exe... The file in question is almost always in the Recycle Bin, or something on the desktop. Not sure if it's a bug, something to be concerned about, or an easy fix, etc. I usually just empty the recycle bin for a temporary fix, but would like to get to the root of the error. Thoughts?

  • FTP proxy that translates from passive to active

    Is it possible to install a proxy server that will transform passive ftp to active ftp? Details of my problem: I would like to deploy my web sites using Visual Studio's built in publish web site function. The problem is that my web hotel only supports active ftp, and unfortunately Visual Studio 2010 has a bug, so the publish function only works with passive ftp. My idear is to install a tiny local ftp proxy, that is able to transform passive ftp mode to active mode. I would then enter localhost as the publish server in Visual Studio, and the proxy would do the actual uploading of the files to my web hotel. Visual Studio bug report: Unable to publish website to FTP server that doesn't allow passive mode.

  • Reasonably faster way to traverse a directory tree in Python?

    Assuming that the given directory tree is of reasonable size: say an open source project like Twisted or Python, what is the fastest way to traverse and iterate over the absolute path of all files/directories inside that directory? I want to do this from within Python (subprocess is allowed). os.path.walk is slow. So I tried ls -lR and tree -fi. For a project with about 8337 files (including tmp, pyc, test, .svn files): $ time tree -fi > /dev/null real 0m0.170s user 0m0.044s sys 0m0.123s $ time ls -lR > /dev/null real 0m0.292s user 0m0.138s sys 0m0.152s $ time find . > /dev/null real 0m0.074s user 0m0.017s sys 0m0.056s $ tree appears to be faster than ls -lR (though ls -R is faster than tree, but it does not give full paths). find is the fastest. Can anyone think of a faster and/or better approach? On Windows, I may simply ship a 32-bit binary tree.exe or ls.exe if necessary. Update 1: Added find

  • How can I remove all users in an Active Directory group?

    I'm trying to remove all users from an AD group with the following code: private void RemoveStudents() { foreach (DirectoryEntry childDir in rootRefreshDir.Children) { DirectoryEntry groupDE = new DirectoryEntry(childDir.Path); for (int counter = 0; counter < groupDE.Properties["member"].Count; counter++) { groupDE.Properties["member"].Remove(groupDE.Properties["member"][counter]); groupDE.CommitChanges(); groupDE.Close(); } } } The rootRefreshDir is the directory that contains all the AD groups (childDir). What I'm finding here is that this code does not behave correctly. It removes users, but it doesn't do it after the first run. It does "some". Then I run it again, and again, and again - depending on how many users need to be deleted in a group. I'm not sure why it's functioning this way. Can someone help fix this code or provide an alternative method to delete all users in a group? Thanks!

  • Windows XP update not working

    I have a problem with XP updating. It hangs when I try to search for updates on the website. But the automatic updates still work. And it's running IE6, so I'm trying to update to IE8, hoping that will fix the problems with the website. But when installing IE8 it just hangs at Installing Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP And if I try to install it manually, it hangs when installing the updates for IE8.   • Add Bookmarks and Notes to Delicious in IE 8

    Are you constantly adding bookmarks to your Delicious account while browsing but want to keep UI use to a minimum? Add bookmarks directly to your account from the context menu using the Share with Delicious accelerator. Share with Delicious in Action To add the accelerator click on Add to Internet Explorer and confirm the installation when the secondary window appears. This is going to be much better than having the Favorites Bar or a new toolbar taking up precious UI room. When you find a webpage that you would like to bookmark right click within the page, go to All Accelerators and select Share with Delicious. The form for the new bookmark will open in a new tab with the URL and title filled in. All that you need to do is add any desired notes/tags and save the bookmark. Suppose that you want notes from the page added to the bookmark. Highlight the desired text, right click on it, then go to All Accelerators and select Share with Delicious. As before the form will open in a new tab…you can see the highlighted text was entered into the notes section for the new bookmark. All that is left to do is add an appropriate tag and save. Once you save your new bookmark the tab will auto navigate to the webpage that you just saved. Returning to our account showed the new bookmark ready for future use along with a the notes for later reference. Conclusion If you add bookmarks to your Delicious account but want to save UI room, then the Share with Delicious accelerator will make a nice addition to Internet Explorer.     I just installed Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" and Ubuntu 11.10 on my MacBook Pro. Using these instructions: tuxation.com/creating-home-partition-mac-linux.html . After changing the location of my home folder to the new location, it gives me the error in the title, and my username no longer appears in the login screen. Using the "Other" option with my username seems to make it try to log in, but the screen quickly flashes between blank and a shell before kicking me back to the login screen without notice. I'm trying to share my home folder between Mac OS X and Ubuntu, using an hfsplus partition (unjournaled) between the two. The home partition seems to mount fine as /home, and I am able to modify it under Ubuntu. Below is the line I've added to fstab: /dev/sda3 /home hfsplus defaults 0 1 I should also note that I changed my account's username and home directory location to match this, though I've double checked that and everything seems in order there... Thank you in advance for any assistance. Edit: It seems that the /etc/passwd file didn't have my new home directory's location in it, so I changed that, and I am now able to log into my account, although I am still not listed in the login screen, and my username in the menu on the top right shows up as "[Invalid UTF-8]"...

    The file /usr/share/doc/linux-doc/usb/persist.txt.gz mentions that the USB-persist capability can be enabled for a given USB device by writing 1 to the file persist in that device's directory in /sys/bus/usb/devices/$device/power. This is said — if I understood correctly — to allow mountings of volumes on the drive to persist across power loss during suspend. However, I've discovered that the device I'd like to enable this facility for — a USB hard drive — does not have such a file in its corresponding directory, and that attempts to create it are rebuffed. Is there perhaps a kernel module that needs to be loaded for this to work? Do I need to build a custom kernel? I'm running ubuntu 10.10.

It appears to be ok then I try and view it's contents using winrar. Winrar keeps telling me the file is corrupt. I have viewed other .gz or .bz2 files using winrar but for some odd reason I can't get it to work. Does anyone else have a suggestion as to something else to try. I would prefer just to have it zip the files so they have a .zip extension but even then when i try to browse it's contents both windows and winrar claim it's corrupt.

Specifically, I want to recursively copy all folders not begining with a '_' character from a specified path. find /source/path/with/directories -maxdepth 1 -type d ! -name _\* -exec cp -R {} /destination/path \; In the /source/path/with/directories/ path are machine-specific directories beginning with '_' and others, and I'm only interested in copying the others. For a reason beyond me, the find command returns the /source/path/with/directories/ directory, and therefore copies its content, directories begining with '_' included.     The CSS active link style is being correctly applied in IE7, FF, and Safari but is not applied IE6. .side_nav a.active { color:#FFFFFF; background-color:#9F1F63; } Interestingly the background color (background-color:#9F1F63;) is being applied in IE6 but not the font color (color:#FFFFFF;) Any ideas on why this is happening and how I can fix it appreciated.   • How can I troubleshoot an APPCRASH in Internet Explorer?

    I'm writing an ActiveX control using the firebreath framework (hi taxilian!) and while it technically works, I'm running into a weird issue that appears to be unique to me. I've followed the instructions to create a simple plugin and then I ran it in Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 x64 (firebreath sets up a test page for the control). But as soon as I try to test it (clicking on a link that fires off JavaScript to interact with the control), IE crashes. Hard. "Internet Explorer has stopped working" style. If I try the control in Firefox (the resulting registered DLL can also be called as a Firefox plugin using a MIME type), it works fine. If I try it on my XP box, it works fine. I emailed the DLL and the testing page to a coworker in the next cube who is like me also running Windows 7 x64 and it works for him just fine as well, so it's not something unique to Windows 7 or x64. I can have it attach to a debugger but it just tells me a long list of DLL's, none of which are the ActiveX control in question. It's almost like it's not even getting there. I did a sfc /scannow yesterday to see if anything on my system is corrupt and nothing came up as wrong. I tried various different security levels in IE, but nothing seems to have any effect. As this is a development machine there has been all matter of crap installed on it, so I figure it's bound to be something I've installed since October (when Win7 was released) but I cannot figure out what it is. I presume the information it's giving me when I attach to Visual Studio is useful somehow but I don't know how to interpret it. Admittedly I'm mainly a C#/.NET developer who's a bit out of his element with C/C++ and troubleshooting native code, but does anyone have any advice on how to proceed on figuring out why this very simple ActiveX control crashes IE on my machine and nowhere else?

  • Is IE Collection reliable tool for testing with various versions of Internet Explorer?

    On my Windows machine -- I typically test different versions of Internet Explorer using an array of Virtual Machine instances (which obviously requires a fair amount of investment in time and money). In a pinch I have also used IETester -- which at times can be a little unreliable. However, I just discovered IE Collection and was wondering if people have used it -- and can I rely on it for web page testing purposes? Would love to know what you think.
