• How to choose a new technology for mastering and not lose sense of reality and practicality?

  How to choose the right next step in learning programming and mastering new technologies? I have experience with WinForms applications in C# .NET. Next what I see as a good area of expanding the knowledge is ASP.NET. Language I already know, C #, so I think there is now more a matter of mastering new technologies. Also I have interest in WPF. Perhaps the best is to work on ASP.NET and WPF at the same time. Sometimes the problem is when we do not have motivation, but also known to become a problem when we want to much :) How to choose a new technology for mastering and not lose sense of reality and practicality?

• Why is database developer pay so high? [closed]

  Just wondering why someone would get 10k+ in some area in US for just writing queries and creating tables. While the average salary for someone who does scripting, object oriented programming, J2EE and database all together is only ~12K in new york city. Is there similar opportunities in cities like new york where only doing database gets one 10K+? What is the rational of companies paying such a high salary to consultants for just writing simple queries? I am sure college grad can do that with ease and will be quite satisfied with a 60k+ pay for a couple of year. Does location really matter so much?

• Applying prerecorded animations to models with the same skeleton

  well my question sounds a bit like, how do I apply mo-cap animations to my model, but thats not really it I guess. Animations and model share the same skeleton, but the models vary in size and proportion, but I still want to be able to apply any animation to any model. I think this should be possible since the models got the same skeleton bone structure and the bones are always in the same area only their position varies from model to model. In particular Im trying to apply this to 2D characters that got 2arm, 2legs, a head and a body, but if you got anything related to that topic even if its 3D related or keywords, articles, books whatever Im gratefull for everything cause Im a bit stuck at the moment. cheers Jery

• Level design - Are games development degrees worth it? [on hold]

  I want to go into Level design or Environment design and wondering if degrees are at all worth it for this area, as long as you have a good portfolio. I'm currently on a "Computing and Games Development" course and I feel like dropping out because I am not enjoying it. It's mostly computer based, which I'm not doing that great at, and little games Dev. But I don't know what do to... I do already have some high level education with a "Level 3 extended diploma". • How to disable the Mount notification in Gnome 3.4?

  How to disable those annoying notifications when you plug a new disk in, or connect to a network and so on.... I know that if I add a device to a mount script they will be mounted on boot thus not showing me the notification, which I did for my hard drives, but it doesn't help with all those flash disks I have... I can't add them all that would be silly. I looked at: How can I disable gnome-shell's notification area? ... but they didn't help, since the code was different I also looked at configuration editor, but I think it can only disable auto-mount when inserted, it doesn't disable notification...

I work as an SDET (SDE in Test) in an area with lots of great technical companies, and would like to have a better understanding of how different companies do testing. I have three sub-questions: Who would I get in contact with to set up informational interviews at a company that I'd like to learn about? How can I make sure the time is productive? And, how do I keep the interview from being a burden to the employee(s) whom I speak with?

• Can't get into the admin console after migrating to new server

  I migrated my WordPress blog to a new server, and everything seemed to be working fine until it started giving me the error when entering the admin area: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 4864 bytes) in /home/neworder/public_html/blog/wp-admin/includes/plugin.php on line 729 The line 729 has: $protected = array( '_wp_attached_file', '_wp_attachment_metadata', '_wp_old_slug', '_wp_page_template' ); I had installed the maintenance-mode, and I have suspicions that this is what broke the forum. If I remove the plugin it then gives another error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 19456 bytes) in /home/neworder/public_html/blog/wp-admin/includes/post.php on line 1158 And that line has: $content .= '<p class="hide-if-no-js">' . esc_html__( 'Remove featured image' ) . '</p>'; } I tried to restore the blog file-system from the old server and also to restore the database from the old server (2x), but still it gives me the same error. • As an IT contractor, is it better to be a specialist or a jack-of-all-trades? [on hold]

  I've just entered the contracting market as a web developer and I've having a tough time figuring out how to plan for the future. Several developers I've worked with in the past have told me to become a specialist in one technology/area in order to secure the big contracts. However I've also heard from other sources that it's better to spread your expertise so that you're not limited in the types of work you can go for. Personally I've pretty much been involved in both back and front-end technologies during the course of my career, with slight variations in the weighting of each depending on the job. I don't really have a favourite - I enjoy it all. My question is mainly to the experienced contractors though: Do you feel specialising has helped your career or is it better to know a bit of everything? Thanks

• Ubuntu One API Java - how to use REST and AccessToken?

  I am writing a java app in eclipse that backups data to several consumer-cloud-services encrypted and redundant. So far, I successfully implemented the authentication process, as it is described in the documentation. At this point, I do not know how to proceed. The next step would be implementing the auth with the stored AccessToken and afterwars implementing upload/download/listing functionality through the REST API. I think I have to store the String oauth.getSerialized(). How do I authenticate with this String afterwards? This does not work e.g.: AuthenticateResponse oauth = api.authenticate(serialized); api.setAuthorizer(new OAuthAuthorizer(oauth)); Can someone tell me please, how I can use the REST API with java? There is no explanation or link in the developers area as far as I saw. And btw, I wasted at least one hour trying to fix errors, because some needed libraries are listet after the example code. :/

• About uninstallation of Ubuntu to allow dual-boot

  I had windows XP and windows 7 previously. I wanted to keep windows XP and replace windows 7 by Ubuntu in a specific drive of hard disk. During installation of Ubuntu I found option replace windows 7 by Ubuntu and I did it. now I found that windows XP has also gone and Ubuntu is occupying the area of whole hard disk. Now I want to uninstall or format the hard disk because Ubuntu is new to me and I am not comfortable with Ubuntu only right now. I want to keep both windows XP and Ubuntu. so how can I uninstall Ubuntu or format hard disk?? please help....Is the formatting is possible by inserting windows XP CD?? Or is there any other way so that without uninstalling Ubuntu I can also install windows XP?

• Application development : method to manage backgound process

  I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : - "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. - "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : - restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. - keep only one instance of the daemon. I have red that killing the daemon to restart it is not a clean way to do. How other applications do ? (ubuntuone, weather forecast, rss feed working with notification area) Thanks for your help. PS : I don't want to create a system-wide daemon, just a user application with a background process.

• Android: Layouts and views or a single full screen custom view?

  I'm developing an Android game, and I'm making it so that it can run on low end devices without GPU, so I'm using the 2D API. I have so far tried to use Android's mechanisms such as layouts and activities where possible, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's not easier to just create a single custom view (or one per activity) and do all the work there. Here's an example of how I currently do things: I'm using a layout to display the game's background as an image view and the square game area, which is a custom view, centered in the middle. What would you say? Should I continue to use layouts where possible or is it more common/reasonable to just use a large custom view? I'm thinking that this would probably also make it easier to port my code to other platforms.

You use your finger to remove dirt from the screen, and then the water just flows to the new area. Anyone knows what engine this was made in and how they where able to get the fluid dynamics in there? I'm using the Corona SDK for mobile development and want to do something similar like this (a game with fluid dynamics).

• Dropbox indicator icon dissapears right after login

  Even though Dropbox's app indicator dissapearing from the tray area seems like a recurrent enough problem, my issue is a litte different. When I login, I can see the app panel populating, and the dropbox icon does indeed appear (config'd as startup application), but after some other icons show up (bluetooth, battery, etc.) it's gone. It's still running though. I'm guessing it's having issues with staying pinned, and I don't know how to start addressing this problem. I have tried many if not all solutions provided here in the forums for the "icon missing" questions. So far: I've whitelisted everything regarding panel Uninstalled-reinstalled (with and without rebooting in between) Overwritten current installation Purged installation from terminal Installed from Software Center and from .deb file batch deleted every "dropbox" ocurrences from terminal (files and folders) and reinstalled Ran sudo apt-get install libappindicator1, it installed, but didn't solve anything I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - 64 bits. Any insight would me much appreciated!

Currently the program doesn't work with shader. How it is possible to add pixel shader to the program with this structure? Inside the shader, I need to set all colors equal to red, and multiply pixel values by some coefficient. • Lean/Kanban *Inside* Software (i.e. WIP-Limits, Reducing Queues and Pull as Programming Techniques)

  Thinking about Kanban, I realized that the queuing-theory behind the SW-development-methodology obviously also applies to concurrent software. Now I'm looking for whether this kind of thinking is explicitly applied in some area. A simple example: We usually want to limit the number of threads to avoid cache-thrashing (WIP-Limits). In the paper about the disruptor pattern[1], one statement that I found interesting was that producer/consumers are rarely balanced so when using queues, either consumers wait (queues are empty), or producers produce more than is consumed, resulting in either a full capacity-constrained queue or an unconstrained one blowing up and eating away memory. Both, in lean-speak, is waste, and increases lead-time. • View Frustum Alternative

  I am working on a simulation project that requires me to have entities walking around in a 3D world. I have all that working, matrix transformations, etc. I'm at the point where I need what is essentially a view frustum, so I can give each entity a visible area. However, when looking over the calculations required to do it, it seems like a perspective frustum is only required to be able to project it onto a 2D screen. Is there another, easier to code solution, that would function better, such as an orthogonal perspective? Could I just define a shape mathematically and test wether the coordinates of the objects are inside or out? I am not really a 3D coder (and I am doing this all from scratch, not using an engine or anything), so I would like the simplest solution possible for my needs. Thank you!
