• Cannot view, use, or open CDs or DVDs in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am fairly new to Ubuntu 12.04 and I have encountered a rather irritating problem. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD (whether it have data, music, movies, or nothing at all), nothing pops up saying "you have inserted a CD", "play with Rhythmbox?" etc. It doesn't show the CD in the launcher/dock or anything of the sort. This is especially peculiar because not only do I have a standard IDE built-in optical drive, but I have an external USB optical drive. Neither work. In addition, whenever I go to "Computer///" and I click (double click, right click, or even left click) on "CD/DVD Drive" nothing happens, when I right click and select "Open" nothing happens either [for either of the two drives (both are listed in Computer///)] And if I insert a blank disk and go to a disk burning program such as Brasero, and try to burn to the drive it detects no CDs or DVDs of any kind. • jquery ui autocomplete does't close options menu if there is no focus when ajax returns

  I'm using jquery ui autocomplete widget with ajax, and on noticed the following problem. Background: In order for the user to be able to focus on the autocomplete and get the options without typing anything, I use the focus event: autoComp.focus(function() { $(this).autocomplete("search", "");} However this produces the following effect: when the user clicks, an ajax request is being sent. While waiting for the response, the user then clicks elsewhere and the autocomplete is blurred. But as soon as the response returns, the options menu pops out, even though the autocomplete has no focus. In order to make it go away the user has to click once inside, and again outside the autocomplete, which is a bit annoying. any ideas how I prevent this? EDIT: I solved this in a very ugly way by building another mediator function that knows the element's ID, and this function calls the ajax function with the ID, which on success check the focus of the element, and returns null if it's not focused. It's pretty ugly and I'm still looking for alternatives. EDIT#2: Tried to do as Wlliam suggested, still doesn't work.. the xhr is undefined when blurring. • resizing arrays when close to memory capacity

  So I am implementing my own hashtable in java, since the built in hashtable has ridiculous memory overhead per entry. I'm making an open-addressed table with a variant of quadratic hashing, which is backed internally by two arrays, one for keys and one for values. I don't have the ability to resize though. The obvious way to do it is to create larger arrays and then hash all of the (key, value) pairs into the new arrays from the old ones. This falls apart though when my old arrays take up over 50% of my current memory, since I can't fit both the old and new arrays in memory at the same time. Is there any way to resize my hashtable in this situation Edit: the info I got for current hashtable memory overheads is from here How much memory does a Hashtable use? Also, for my current application, my values are ints, so rather than store references to Integers, I have an array of ints as my values.

  In visual studio, we can open a file in a #Include statement by right clicking the filename in include statement and then clicking "Open Document". But sometimes, when I want to open a file, I don't remember where it was in the project or where has it been included. What I do is that I open any file, add a #include statement for that file, then right-click-Open Document to open the file and then remove the #include statement that I added just to open this file. Can someone plz tell me a more straight forward way of quickly opening a file without searching for it? I am using Visual Studio 2008

• Save NSWindow Size on Resize & Close For User

  I've noticed that all applications on OS X seem to save the size you set it at. The next time you open it it's typically in the same position and size. I'm making an app and I've noticed that after resizing, if I launch the application again it's just the size of what I've set in Xcode 4's IB and not the size that I resized it to on launch. Do I have to manually save the window size each time its changed? Or is there an easier way to do this through IB? (My window does have a minimum size set if that changes anything.)

• Unity DontDestroyOnLoad causing scenes to stay open

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jkrebsbach/archive/2014/08/11/unity-dontdestroyonload-causing-scenes-to-stay-open.aspxMy Unity project has a class (ClientSettings) where most of the game state & management properties are stored.  Among these are some utility functions that derive from MonoBehavior.  However, between every scene this object was getting recreated and I was losing all sorts of useful data.  I learned that with DontDestroyOnLoad, I can persist this entity between scenes.  Super.Persisting information between scenesThe problem with adding DontDestroyOnLoad to my "ClientSettings" was suddenly my previous scene would stay alive, and continue to execute its update routines.  An important part of the documentation helps shed light to my issues:"If the object is a component or game object then its entire transform hierarchy will not be destroyed either."My ClientSettings script was attached to the main camera on my first scene.  Because of this, the Main Camera was part of the hierarchy of the component, and therefore was also not able to destroy when switching scenes.  Now the first scene's main camera Update routine continues to execute after the second scene is running - causing me to have some very nasty bugs.Suddenly I wasn't sure how I should be creating a persistent entity - so I created a new sandbox project and tested different approaches until I found one that works:In the main scene: Create an empty Game Object:  "GameManager" - and attach the ClientSettings script to this game object.  Set any properties to the clientsettings script as appropriate.Create a prefab, using the GameManager.Remove the Game Object from the main scene.In the Main Camera, I created a script:  Main Script.  This is my primary script for the main scene.<code> public GameObject[] prefabs; private ClientSettings _clientSettings; // Use this for initialization void Start () { GameObject res = (GameObject)Instantiate(prefabs[0]); }</code>Now go back out to scene view, and add the new GameManager prefab to the prefabs collection of MainScript.When the main scene loads, the GameManager is set up, but is not part of the main scene's hierarchy, so the two are no longer tied up together.Now in our second scene, we have a script - SecondScript - and we can get a reference to the ClientSettings we created in the previous scene like so:<code>private ConnectionSettings _clientSettings; // Use this for initialization void Start () { _clientSettings = FindObjectOfType<ConnectionSettings> (); }</code>And the scenes can start and finish without creating strange long-running scene side effects.

  Visual Studio 10 crashed when I tried to open  one of my solutions. • Oracle Open World 2012 is Here!

  Just a quick post today and then probably not much more until next week. Speaking, running hands on labs, meets and greets, and trying to keep up with folks like @oraclenerd means I won’t have much time to write until I get home from San Francisco. Wanted to give a quick shout out to my co-worker and partner-in-Product Management-crime, Ashley Chen this morning. She signed me up for a run across the Golden Gate and back with @bamcgill a few months ago…mostly with my permission. The only thing was, I didn’t run at the time, and that’s basically a 5k. But having goals is good. And yesterday I met a big goal of mine – not looking stupid trying to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. Ok, I did the run and mabye looked a little bit stupid. Ashley, Barry, and I Pre-Run Perfect weather and no fog to cloud the view! So the pre-show fun is over and now it’s time for the show fun to begin. At Oracle Open World? Come by our demo pods. • ALSA samples capture: cannot open device

  I'm quite new to Linux (Lubuntu 12.04 for sake of precision) and ALSA programming at all. I'm trying to write a C program to capture audio from internal PC microphone for processing it. So as first step I google a bit and I found this article for capturing audio samples A tutorial on using the ALSA Audio API but when I compile it and execute it with: ./capture "default" or ./capture "hw:0,0" and all the possible variants on theme it always raises the error: cannot open device hw:0,0 (no such file or directory). So the issue is: what is the name of the mic audio device to pass as parameter to record the audio from mic ? The mic is working ok because the Sound Recorder program records sounds perfectly and I can playback them. • Wireless internet is connected to an open network but has no internet

  I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop yesterday and it connected to the wireless fine. Then I took it to school, put it on their wired connection, downloaded some stuff, and now the wireless doesn't work. At first it would detect networks, but not connect. I restarted it and now it can connect, but it acts like it doesn't have internet in the browser. Wired connection still works fine on it. I know it isn't the network because my ipad is working on the wireless connection fine. I found another solution on here switching the security settings for the wireless, but this is the apartment's wireless so they have it open, and I won't be able to mess with it at all. • Help with force close occurrences in my app

  This is the last issue with this app. Periodic force close situations. I think something should be on another thread but I'm not sure what. Anyway, I can always count on a freeze on first install. If I wait, eventually (maybe 10 seconds) the app comes around, maybe more. here is an excerpt from logcat--the three lines occur after full layout is displayed and I attempt to touch a [game] 'peg' which should spawn a sprite, but the freeze occurs there.
