• Should I work for free while applying for a job?

  An employer usually asks a candidate to do a small project at home ("homework") as a part of applying for a job. Last time I applied for a job (as a web developer), there were aproximately 10 applicants who were all given different tasks. Despite the fact that there was only one vacancy, the company used the work of all of the candidates in one of its projects. Actually, it is quite reasonable for a company to create these "vacancies" just to make people work for free - I estimate, that aproximately 2 weeks of programmer's work was saved with all of the job applications that company had on one vacancy. Is this a common practice and how can you protect yourself from working for free in the future? Have you seen this during your career?

• Solaris 11 features: nscfg

However you don't have to use the svccfg command in order to configure them, you could still use the old files. However you can't just edit them, you have to import the data into the SMF repository. • Best/ most efficient way to learn a programming language as a beginner [closed]

  I am a student and have obtained a one year placement at a business that develops an e-commerce system using C#, HTML, WPF, javascript, ASP and more. Although I do have a little bit of knowledge, I find myself being assigned a lot of tasks that are beyond me and even when I ask for help, the response I get is often cryptic to me. I stare at as much code as possible to just try and "throw myself into it" but I often just get lost in the code I like to consider myself a fast learner and I am damn determined to be a good programmer. I would just like to ask if there are some tips for me to catch up as quick as possible? I don't want to be a nuisance and sit here and ask for help 24/7. I just want to crack on!

• Is there benefit to maintain a large project with bad code?

  I'm currently maintain a large project with more than 100000 LOC. The code use the MFC as its framework, in genral, it only has interface part which heavily use the mfc api and a business logic part which full of bad code, confusing logic. The company has some small features delivered to the customer each year(most features are adding code to exisiting project, finding some reference of some api or variable and it' s no different with fixing 3-4 bugs ), most of the tasks are to resove issue and optimize performance . Like other company with maintaining position, it value people who knows much logic about its product. There are people who can quickly finish the job on such project, is it worth to train myself like such a programmer? Is there benifits to work on such project for a long time?

• Is the Windows Start button an example of poor mapping? [migrated]

  In my recent course on HCI, I've been told that start button on Windows systems is an example of poor mapping. The reason for that, as explained in materials, is that it doesn't start anything, but rather reveals a menu. I think that this is only valid if you approaching this from low level of abstraction (meaning that the button must start something). If you on the other hand take a view on this from higher level of abstraction, as of "Place where I start most of my tasks", i.e. This is the place where you are start*ing the task of switching off your computer This is the place where you are start*ing the task of searching for something on your computer This is the place where you are start*ing the task of running a program This is the place where you are start*ing the task ... Then I think it makes perfect sense and has perfect mapping. Is this a sensible interpretation?

• How can I make refactoring a priority for my team?

  The codebase I work with daily has no automated tests, inconsistent naming and tons of comments like "Why is this here?", "Not sure if this is needed" or "This method isn't named right" and the code is littered with "Changelogs" despite the fact we use source control. Suffice it to say, our codebase could use refactoring. We always have tasks to fix bugs or add new features, so no time is put aside to refactor code to be better and more modular, and it doesn't seem to be a high priority. How can I demonstrate the value of refactoring such that it gets added to our task lists? Is it worth it to just refactor as I go, asking for forgiveness rather than permission?

• Is it normal to sometimes take a while to get even basic things working in software development?

  This is a little hard to explain because it's a really generic question, but bear with me... I find that when I am doing or recreating basic things from scratch (i.e. without the help of libraries), sometimes it feels as though I'm taking much more time to do the task than is actually needed. I am not new to programming or development & design concepts and have worked extensively with around 9 languages and various platforms and paradigms over 5/6 years. Although I don't yet have any academic qualification for programming and have learned almost exclusively from the Internet, I have been told that the quality of my code is excellent by those with qualifications. So, I don't think I'm a bad programmer because I really love doing it and working with software architecture, but maybe I'm slow? Or is it normal to take sometimes longer than it seems necessary to do basic tasks?

• Macro vs. Static functions in Header

  for a lot of quick tasks where one could employ a function f(x,y), in plain C, macros are used. I would like to ask specifically about these cases, that are solvable by a function call (i.e. macros used for inlining functions, not for code expansion of arbitrary code). Typically C functions are not inlined since they might be linked to from other C files. However, static C functions are only visible from within the C file they are defined in. Therefore they can be inlined by compilers. I have heard that a lot of macros should be replaced by turning them into static functions, because this produces safer code. Are there cases where this is a not good idea? Again: Not asking about Code-Production macros with ## alike constructs that cannot at all be expressed as a function.

• "Index of ..." directory's files listing

  On my courses we've got homework on site in folders such as: http://example.com/files/tasks1-edc34rtgfds http://example.com/files/tasks2-0bg454fgerg http://example.com/files/tasks3-h1dlkjiojo8 ... Each tasksi-xxxxxxxxxxx is a folder with 11 random characters at the end. And when you view the above URLs in browser you can see Index of /tasksi-xxxxxxxxx with all the files in that folder. When you view http://example.com/files/ you can see only empty html with words "Hello, world". The problem is that you can't look into the next task without knowledge of its URL. So for example we've got the URLs for tasks1 and tasks2, and we can't guess what tasks3 URL will be (as we need to know the 11 random characters at the end) How can I get the list of all directories? (Is there a way to type something like http://example.com/files/task1-aflafjal343/..? or another way?) I want to see all upcoming homework tasks.

  I learned PHP to make websites. After some years I've started using programming for solving what is difficult tasks for my level. Now I want to make a program that solves equations. (I want to write it myself, not use an API. Because I'm doing this for the sake of the challenge, not for the result..) Because of this, I'm going to learn a new and faster/better language. It's going to be C++, Java, Python or C#. What are the benefits of each language, and which language is best for speed compared to speed of writing and readability?   I keep lots of notes as I work - code snippets, TODO lists, account details, links, comments. I currently use plain text files for this - very simple and robust but a bit last-century. I would like features similar to HTML - e.g. to embed pictures, formatting, and crucially hyperlinks within my notes. One particular use-case is an implementation of Getting Things Done - more or less, a collection of hierarchical TODO lists, which I'd implement with hyperlinks between tasks. Most WYSIWYG HTML editors seem to be aimed at web designers, creating beautiful pages for professional websites. Is there a simple tool / editor more appropriate for how I want to use it? (or advice from anyone doing the same)

• Best Graphics card (Setup) for three, high-res monitors attached to desktop

  I have been looking around a little bit, but most of the discussions are about problems with already existing systems (particular graphics card and setup etc.). I would like to ask what would be the best option for me if I want to build powerful desktop with triple monitor setup. I have one Dell UltraSharp U2713HM (27 inches, 2560x1440) and I was thinking about getting two more. Would it be possible to have those three working with ubuntu (kubuntu) on any graphics card out there today? What is the best option if it comes to choosing particular model? Should I use proprietary drivers or some open sourced ones? I am not a gamer. I mostly develop on my machines and running some computational tasks, but I would rather like to spend some more money and have setup where I don't see any lags :) thank You very much in advance! The UI should ensure the option to close a started ProjectTask is never available, but some safeguards are present in the domain: public class Task { public Status Status { get; set; } public virtual void Close() { Status = Status.Closed; } } public ProjectTask : Task { public override void Close() { if (Status == Status.Started) throw new Exception("Cannot close a started Project Task"); base.Close(); } } Now when calling Close() on a Task, there is a chance the call will fail if it is a ProjectTask with the started status, when it wouldn't if it was a base Task. But this is the business requirements. It should fail. Can this be regarded as a violation?

  i am working on a project that has two interface (web and desktop), they are not performing the same tasks but they use the same BLL and DAL, the web part using 100% of the BLL and DAL, while the desktop only needs to know about 20% of the BLL and DAL. do you think it is a good idea to let the desktop use the same BLL and DAL as the web, which consequently will lead to ditributing thos BLL and DAL with the desktop application? or you think i'd better create new BLL and DAL projects just to serve the desktop app? but in this case i will fall in the trap of maintaining two copies of the same code!

• What would one call this architecture?

  I have developed a distributed test automation system which consists of two different entities. One entity is responsible for triggering tests runs and monitoring/displaying their progress. The other is responsible for carrying out tests on that host. Both of these entities retrieve data from a central DB. Now, my first thought is that this is clearly a server-client architecture. After all, you have exactly one organizing entity and many entities that communicate with said entity. However, while the supposed clients to communicate to the server via RPC, they are not actually requesting services or information, rather they are simply reporting back test progress, in fact, once the test run has been triggered they can complete their tasks without connection to the server. The request for a service is actually made by the supposed server which triggers the clients to carry out tests. So would this still be considered a server-client architecture or is this something different?

• Excel duration converts to date

  I'm working on an Excel 2010 spreadsheet and I'm trying to put in durations for some tasks I want to schedule.The interesting thing is that up until a few minutes ago, I couldn't do it.I was entering in "47:00" and excel was (and still is) converting it to "1/1/1900 23:00:00"In my mind, I want the value to be 47 minutes, but for the life of me I cannot find a fix for this behavior.Here's the weirdest thing, I haven't had this problem in the past.  Usually I put in times, add them up and they work like magic.  Put in 18 entries of 20 minutes each, total them and excel will usually tell me that it's a total of 6 hours.No problem.Today, problem.Here's the weird bit:As I was writing this post, I got it to work.By formatting the column as custom "[hh]:mm" and summing the columns, I can get total times.But the times are still being formatted into dates if I look at the underlying data.  Bottom line, if you need to calculate durations, you can, but don't look too closely at what is happening underneath the covers.

Is there any proof or argument that teams become much more productive by adding more people? I am looking for answers that can be supported by facts and references if possible. What I'm thinking about is that existing devs have to teach the new ones (thus losing overall development time), and then the new developers have to study the code (and tasks) before they can become fully productive.
