• What Data structure for Reputation Rules in C# (like stackoverflow)

  I am currently building a system which will have entities that will have scores like reputation etc.. I will have a service that will check for certain rules having been triggered, and will perform certain logic if they are triggered. Previously I have used say an Enum for doing this when I have only had to store an id and a description. public enum ShoppingCratCalculation { PartialCalculation = 1, CompleteCalculation =2 } But in this situation I want to carry more information, such as the modification to reputation, all in one place. I'm essentially asking what data structure would be best suited to storing this information, for each rule in the system. 1. Description = string ("User forgot to write a review") 2. DB id = int (23) 3. Rep score modification = int (-5) Maybe a little class (Rule) with these as properties , and then just a list? Does anyone have any best practice suggestions for this kind of struct?

• Securing WinForms Application suggestions

  I've been looking for a simple key/license system for our users. Its partly to stop piracy (avoid users from sharing the application around) and the other half to track the number of 'licensed users' we have. I have already read a few good suggestions on SO but I'm curious as to how people have implemented the 30 day evaluation criteria. Do you generate a key that stores the date somewhere and do a comparison each time or is it a little more complicated - deleting the file/removing the registry shouldn't deactivate. Are there any example implementations out there that can give me a head start? The irony is that our PM doesn't want to license a third-party system to do it for us. This is for a Windows Forms application.

• Parallel For Loop - Problems when adding to a List

  I am having some issues involving Parallel for loops and adding to a List. The problem is, the same code may generate different output at different times. I have set up some test code below. In this code, I create a List of 10,000 int values. 1/10th of the values will be 0, 1/10th of the values will be 1, all the way up to 1/10th of the values being 9. After setting up this List, I setup a Parallel for loop that iterates through the list. If the current number is 0, I add a value to a new List. After the Parallel for loop completes, I output the size of the list. The size should always be 1,000. Most of the time, the correct answer is given. However, I have seen 3 possible incorrect outcomes occur: The size of the list is less than 1,000 An IndexOutOfRangeException occurs @ doubleList.Add(0.0); An ArgumentException occurs @ doubleList.Add(0.0); The message for the ArgumentException given was: Destination array was not long enough. Check destIndex and length, and the array's lower bounds. What could be causing the errors? Is this a .Net bug? Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening? Please try the code for yourself. If you do not get an error, try it a few times. • Computer always freezing after random periods of time. No errors listed.

  Hi, all. Here are my specs beforehand: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz, 160GB IDE HDD, 128MB GeForce 6200 AGP, 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM, CoolMax 350W PSU, 1 x CD-RW Drive, 1 x DVD-ROM Drive, FIC AM37 Mobo, Windows XP Pro SP3 My desktop freezes after random periods of time but there are no errors listed in the Event Viewer after a forced shutdown and restart. A couple months ago, I found that when it froze, the floppy was being accessed at the same time. So, I disconnected the floppy (since I never used it anyways) from the power supply and motherboard. Everything was working fine and the computer never froze. This past Christmas break, I left for a Conference and when I got home, the computer kept freezing again. So, this time, I just disconnected the DVD reader (from mobo and power) and started it up. Still, it froze almost right away. Then I found some older sticks of RAM (2 x 256MB PC2100 DDR) and swapped them in. Everything worked fine again after that. I even swapped the 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM back in and everything worked okay. Then it started freezing again, and I tried all possible RAM combos, still freezing within 5-10 minutes of startup. One thing I've realized is that the floppy drive is still listed in My Computer and I uninstalled it from my Device Manager already. There were no software errors, and I uninstalled the most recent software, with no effect. Still, I have no idea what is wrong because everything ran fine before that. Any suggestions? EDIT: Still have yet to buy some blank CD media to use Memtest86+. However, would a lack of virtual memory cause the computer to freeze? EDIT2: So after a long time, I ran Memtest86+ and all is well. Turns out though, after removing my original DVD reader and replacing it with a DVD-ROM drive, there is no freezing whatsoever! Thanks for all your suggestions!

• Reconnecting OST with Exchange

  Hi. I have a quite big problem with customer's MS Exchange. The server got it's disk filled about 2 weeks ago, so it's currently offline. They plan to upgrade it, but not in hurry, as they use it mainly for OWA and back-up - the mails exchange is done via SMTP and POP3. Trying to diagnose some problem today, one of the users has (following the ISP instructions), removed the Exchange account from Outlook, which essentially left the OST orphaned. The user naturally didn't move the emails or any other data to the Archive / PST before, so these emails located on the OST only. So currently I'm trying to figure out how to restore them. There are 2 options: 1) Make the user buy some tool to convert them to PST, and import as archive / main Outlok file? 2) Reconnect the Outlook to Exchange (once it up), let it sync the old server content, then shutdown Outlook and replace the new OST with the old one, start Outlook again in offline mode and move these files to archive. 3) Any other method? Can someone advice what would be the best approach here? The used versions are Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2003. Thanks!

• How to do 'git status' on untracked directory?

  I have 6,000 untracked files in one subdirectory and I'm constructing .gitignore files to filter out the unwanted ones. I'm testing my gitignore filters as I go by running 'git status'. However, I have a larger number of untracked other files in a different subdirectory, so 'git status' shows all of those too, which makes it very hard to see what the .gitignore rules are doing. If the files were tracked, then I could just do 'git status .' and it would restrict the git-status output to only those files in the current directory, but because the current directory and all its contents are untracked, 'git status .' returns "error: pathspec . did not match any file(s) known to git." I'm using git-1.6.6.1 for this, although interestingly my testing shows that git-1.7.1 (on a different system) does actually let you do git-status on an untracked directory. Unfortunately I can't upgrade git on this system. Is there a known workaround for -1.6.6.1?

• UPS power requirements for server

  Greetings! So, I just placed an order for a new server. The company recommended that I get a 3000W UPS. (!) As best as I could I calculated the following wattage consumption based on benchmarked data or datasheets provided by the manufacturers of each component: number watts **total watts** MoBo 1 240 240 CPUs (E5540) 2 80 160 RAID cards (3ware) 2 18 36 RAM (6x4GB) 6 3 18 DVD drive 1 7 7 floppy 1 2 2 RE4 drives 8 7 56 WD20 drives 8 6 48 Intel X25 SSD 2 0.15 0.3 total = 567 So that is for the PSU requirements only. The PSUs in the machine are a 720W for the master node and 800W each for two subsystems. That's a total of 2320W that can be delivered by these PSUs. But that is 4X the amount being consumed, at most, by the components. I didn't count case fans or the eSATA card (3W maybe?) or what the PSUs themselves require but assuming I double or triple my calculations I'm not even remotely close to the 3000W UPS I was suggested to get. They run at least $1100. I could get a 2000W for about $750 or a 1500W for $450 and still be well over my estimated power need. I don't think I need a whole lot of run time in the case of a power outage, maybe 20 minutes max, enough time to shutdown if the power doesn't come on within 5-10 minutes. Any thoughts? Am I off on my calculations? Did I overlook something major? If so what are your suggestions for a UPS? Thanks!

  Using log4net we would like to log all calls to our ASP.NET MVC controller action methods. The logs should include information about any parameters that were passed to the controller. Rather than hand-coding this in each action method we hope to use an AoP approach with Interceptors via Unity. We already have this working with some other classes that use interfaces (using the InterfaceInterceptor). However, we're not sure how to proceed with our controllers. Should we re-work them slightly to use an interface, or is there a simpler approach? Edit The VirtualMethodInterceptor seems to be the correct approach, however using this results in the following exception: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. • Loading embedded resource on Windows 7

  Hello, I have an app that works just fine on my WinXP machine. However, when I try running it on my Win7 machine, it fails whenever it tries to load an embedded resource. The resources are all there (I can see them using Reflector). The lines that fail are all of the form: Splash.Image = new Bitmap(typeof(ContainerForm).Assembly.GetManifestResourceStream("SplashTest.Resources.Logo.gif")); And they all fail with the same exception: Exception='System.ArgumentException: Parameter is not valid. at System.Drawing.Bitmap..ctor(Stream stream) I don't understand why this is not working on my Win7 machine but does on my usual WinXP dev machine. Any ideas?

  hey everybody, I have a jsp page which contains the code which prints all files in a given directory and their file paths. For example, the code spits out the following path: /usr/local/tomcat/sites/web_tech/images/scores/blah.jpg and I want it to only print the path up to /images ie /images/scores/blah.jpg I know I could just mess around with an actual string, ie splitting it or string matching, but is there an easier way to do it? Consider the following example, which prints "Inner" and then "Child". class Outer { class Inner { Inner() { System.out.println("Inner"); } } } public class Child extends Outer.Inner { Child(Outer o) { o.super(); System.out.println("Child"); } public static void main(String args[]) { new Child(new Outer()); } } I understand that instances of Inner always have to be associated with an Outer instance, and that that applies to Child too since it extends Inner. My question is what the o.super() syntax means - why does it call the Inner constructor? I've only seen a plain super(args) used to call the superclass constructor and super.method() to call the superclass version of an overridden method, but never something of the form instance.super().

• User created Validator wont call Client side validation Javascript on 'complex' user control.

  Hi All, I have created a user control (from System.Web.UI.UserControl), and created my own validator for the user control (from System.Web.UI.WebControls.BaseValidator). Everything works ok until I try to get the user control to do client side validation. While trying to debug this issue I have set 'Control to Validate' to a text box instead of the custom user control, and the client side script works fine! It appears to me that it has an a issue with my composite user control I have created. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Has anyone else seen client side validation fail on custom user controls? Some extra info : The composite control is a drop down list and 'loader image', as it is a ajax enabled drop down list (using ICallbackEventHandler). • I need to stop execution during recursive algorithm

  Hey, I have a problem in choosing the right method to accomplish my goal. I'm working on Algorithms teaching system, I'm using C#. I need to divide my algorithm into steps, each step will contain a recursion. I have to stop execution after each step, user can then move to the next step(next recursion) using a button in my GUI. After searching, threads was the right choice, but I found several methods: (Thread.sleep/interrupt): didn't work, my GUI freezed !! (Suspend/Resume): I've read that it's a bad idea to use. (Waithandles): still reading about them. (Monitor wait/resume). I don't have much time to try and read all previous methods, please help me in choosing the best method that fits my system.Any suggestions are extremal welcomed.

• MS Test : How do I enforce exception message with ExpectedException attribute

  I thought these two tests should behave identically, in fact I have written the test in my project using MS Test only to find out now that it does not respect the expected message in the same way that nunit does. nunit (fails): [Test, ExpectedException(typeof(System.FormatException), ExpectedMessage = "blah")] public void Validate() { int.Parse("dfd"); } ms test (passes): [TestMethod, ExpectedException(typeof(System.FormatException), "blah")] public void Validate() { int.Parse("dfd"); } No matter what message I give the ms test, it will pass. Is there any way to get the ms test to fail if the message is not right? Can I even create my own exception attribute? I would rather not have to write a try catch block for every test where this occurs.

• Django's manage.py shell won't indent

  I seem to have run into a strange bug or more likely some setting I am unfamiliar with on my system that is not allowing me to tab when I am in Django's shell (python manage.py shell is how I run it). For obvious reasons this is proving to be annoying since I can't do any loops or conditonals in the shell. If I hit tab it completes all functions that are available to me, like bash does in a terminal. I've tried just using spaces for my indents but I always get an indentation error. Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to get tab to work in my shell again? (It may be relevant to know that this is on a Ubuntu 9.04 system). Edit: tab works fine in the regular pythong shell, it's only in django's that it doesn't. Thanks.

• Computer Freezes with "Bugcheck 0" on Windows 7. How do I figure out why?

  After about 10 minutes of running, my computer will hang, exhibiting the following symptoms: Both monitors act as if there is no image being sent to them (on, but blacked out) The CAPS Lock key on the keyboard will not respond. The computer appears to still be running: CPU Fan is whirring. When I reboot, Windows says "The previous shutdown was unexpected." I've enabled the 'don't automatically restart' on an error, and asked the computer to make a memory dump whenever it crashes, but it hasn't done either. The problem is that there's no bugcheck for me to go off of, so there's no way for me to determine what the cause is (I think). Here are my system specs: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Gigabyte P35C-DS3R w/ 4.00 GB (DDR2 Ram) Nvidia 8800 GT Windows 7 I've tried running the Windows Memory checker, but the system also freezes when using that after about 10 minutes as well. How can I diagnose the problem with no bugcheck and no ability to run a memory checker? Update Running Memtest86 also causes the computer to crash (looks like it doesn't make it through a full pass - it was only running for about 10 minutes when the PC stopped responding).

• Oracle: Getting ORA-01195 and ORA-01110 when attempting resetlogs

  I am trying to get our database to startup. When I login to sqlplus and do a startup, I get the message: Total System Global Area 534462464 bytes Fixed Size 2215064 bytes Variable Size 331350888 bytes Database Buffers 192937984 bytes Redo Buffers 7958528 bytes Database mounted. ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open So I do a shutdown, startup mount (which works fine) and then run: SQL> alter database recover using backup controlfile until cancel; alter database recover using backup controlfile until cancel * ERROR at line 1: ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to errors ORA-19909: datafile 1 belongs to an orphan incarnation ORA-01110: data file 1: '/<path>/system01.dbf' SQL> alter database open resetlogs; alter database open resetlogs * ERROR at line 1: ORA-01195: online backup of file 1 needs more recovery to be consistent ORA-01110: data file 1: '/<path>/system01.dbf' I know I've used instructions to get me past this error before, but I seem to be having trouble tracking it down. A bit of history: We wanted to refresh the data in this from another db so we attempted to do a expdb/impdb into this instance. The impdb did not complete correctly and got an end of file error message in it and hung (I still have the message in a log if it's important). Since the instance would start at this point, we decided to use the hotbackup process we have to restore the db. The hotbackups are from another server/instance. We went through the same process 2 weeks ago. At the point of recreating the control file is where we got to the issue above.
