    I am looking for some kind of online subscription payment system which is kind of like Spreedly and Recurly but it either has a cheap monthly price or they take a % per transaction. What other options are there available? I don't really want to manage subscriptions myself and I'm looking to use as many web services as I can :-) All suggestions and discussion welcome...

  • Publishing artifacts with sources on archiva

    At work I'm dipping my toes in managing project dependencies with maven. We use Apache Archiva (1.2.1) as a local repository and proxy. I'm adding artifact for open source project, that is not published on any public repository. I've learned that to publish the sources I should use the Classifier field on Upload artifact page. The sources are then listed alongside the jar and pom when I browse the repository. But when I update my maven dependencies I get only the jar and pom from the repository. I noticed that sources are also missing when the archiva proxies for me the downloads from other public repositories. I didn't find any configuration options in Archiva's admin pages to serve the sources... What am I missing? Update: I was missing the fact that artifact sources have to be downloaded manually. I.e. the maven client has to request them, which is controlled by command line option -DdownloadSources=true. Maven Integration for Eclipse has a preference setting to always download them as described in Resolving artifact sources. Archiva then serves the sources for local artifacts or proxies the request to remote repositories and caches the sources for future requests.

  • My ASP.NET news sources

    I just posted about the ASP.NET Daily Community Spotlight. I was going to list a bunch of my news sources at the end, but figured this deserves a separate post. I've been following a lot of development blogs for a long time - for a while I subscribed to over 1500 feeds and read them all. That doesn't scale very well, though, and it's really time consuming. Since the community spotlight requires an interesting ASP.NET post every day of the year, I've come up with a few sources of ASP.NET news. Top Link Blogs Chris Alcock's The Morning Brew is a must-read blog which highlights each day's best blog posts across the .NET community. He covers the entire Microsoft development, but generally any of the top ASP.NET posts I see either have already been listed on The Morning Brew or will be there soon. Elijah Manor posts a lot of great content, which is available in his Twitter feed at @elijahmanor, on his Delicious feed, and on a dedicated website - Web Dev Tweets. While not 100% ASP.NET focused, I've been appreciating Joe Stagner's Weekly Links series, partly since he includes a lot of links that don't show up on my other lists. Twitter Over the past few years, I've been getting more and more of my information from my Twitter network (as opposed to RSS or other means). Twitter is as good as your network, so if getting good information off Twitter sounds crazy, you're probably not following the right people. I already mentioned Elijah Manor (@elijahmanor). I follow over a thousand people on Twitter, so I'm not going to try to pick and choose a list, but one good way to get started building out a Twitter network is to follow active Twitter users on the ASP.NET team at Microsoft: @scottgu (well, not on the ASP.NET team, but their great grand boss, and always a great source of ASP.NET info) @shanselman @haacked @bradwilson @davidfowl @InfinitiesLoop @davidebbo @marcind @DamianEdwards @stevensanderson @bleroy @humancompiler @osbornm @anurse I'm sure I'm missing a few, and I'll update the list. Building a Twitter network that follows topics you're interested in allows you to use other tools like Cadmus to automatically summarize top content by leveraging the collective input of many users. Twitter Search with Topsy You can search Twitter for hashtags (like #aspnet, #aspnetmvc, and #webmatrix) to get a raw view of what people are talking about on Twitter. Twitter's search is pretty poor; I prefer Topsy. Here's an example search for the #aspnetmvc hashtag: http://topsy.com/s?q=%23aspnetmvc You can also do combined queries for several tags: http://topsy.com/s?q=%23aspnetmvc+OR+%23aspnet+OR+%23webmatrix Paper.li Paper.li is a handy service that builds a custom daily newspaper based on your social network. They've turned a lot of people off by automatically tweeting "The SuperDevFoo Daily is out!!!" messages (which can be turned off), but if you're ignoring them because of those message, you're missing out on a handy, free service. My paper.li page includes content across a lot of interests, including ASP.NET: http://paper.li/jongalloway When I want to drill into a specific tag, though, I'll just look at the Paper.li post for that hashtag. For example, here's the #aspnetmvc paper.li page: http://paper.li/tag/aspnetmvc Delicious I mentioned previously that I use Delicious for managing site links. I also use their network and search features. The tag based search is pretty good: Even better, though, is that I can see who's bookmarked these links, and add them to my Delicious network. After having built out a network, I can optimize by doing less searching and more leaching leveraging of collective intelligence. Community Sites I scan DotNetKicks, the weblogs.asp.net combined feed, and the ASP.NET Community page, CodeBetter, Los Techies,  CodeProject,  and DotNetSlackers from time to time. They're hit and miss, but they do offer more of an opportunity for finding original content which others may have missed. Terms of Enrampagement When someone's on a tear, I just manually check their sites more often. I could use RSS for that, but it changes pretty often. I just keep a mental note of people who are cranking out a lot of good content and check their sites more often. What works for you?

    Hey guys, I don't know if this should be a regular question or maybe a wiki page. I just got a call back from an employer and he advised me i have made it through to the next round of interviews and would have to take an online C++ test through IKM (http://www.ikmnet.com/). Has anyone here got any advise as to what type of questions this test will ask, or has anyone got advise about what i should do a brush up on to do the best i could on this test.     Can anybody tell me any "free online hosted database servers" (don't know if that is the correct term) where we can do query testing and all those things that we can do on tools like PhpMyAdmin? does something like that exist? Like we have http://jsfiddle.net/ for testing js codes. I checked http://sqlzoo.net/ but this is very much limited and there are some predefined tables in some given examples on which we can alter things. That's all. It does not allow me to do a lots of other things like creating tables etc. A nice resource - PhpMyAdmin's demo site . Use the latest stable version here. You have full control over the MySQL server, however you should not change root, debian-sys-maint or pma user password or limit their permissions. If you do so, demo can not be accessed until privileges are restored, so you just break things for you and other users.

  • Jenkins and Visual Studio Online integration authentication

    right now I am trying to Setup Continuouse Integration - Delivery for a basic WCF Service, which will be hosted on a Microsoft Azure VM. The Project is Version Controlled through Visual Studio Online. So I installed Jenkins (also on the Azure VM), TFS plugin etc. and started the first Test Build: As Server URL I used "[VSO Adress]/DefaultCollection" and for Login purposes my Microsoft Account (I can Access VSO with that). However, I did not include how to bring the offline database to online in that post. The reason I did not write it was that I was thinking it was a very simple script that almost everyone knows. However, it seems to me that there is something I found advanced in this procedure that is not simple for other people.   • Ubuntu Software Center does not allow changes to software sources

    The checkboxes that appear to be changeable under the Edit / Software Sources dialog box cannot be changed. I click on them and they just turn gray and stay at their current setting.   • Are there any home/soho NAS devices that will backup/sync to the cloud?

    Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps.   • What's the future of online gamedev. FLASH or UNITY?

    Currently, i develop for flash, not much ago i discovered unity, not yet played with it, but i have seen so far was cool. Here are my thoughts: Flash is more casual, start with cost less, in time and money. In unity you'd likely have to go more bussines-serious (real money). There are proven bussines models in flash, like adver-gaming, ads, micro-transactions. Have not seen much movement in this in Unity, too soon maybe. Flash is too heavy. By its nature(making games) Unity is way faster. Flash is 2d, doing something 3d with it turns weird and slow. Unity is natively 3d, not optimized for 2d though, it is likely feasible as well. I am overlooking the plug-in widespread, that gap will get closed over the time.

  • Is LiveDrive.com reliable?

    I'm currently using DropBox (50GB account) which works fine, but at this moment I'm not impressed with its speed. I have a 60down/6up connection and only LiveDrive can use almost the full bandwidth of my connection. Dropbox often is very slow (avg. 100-500Kb/s compared to LD at 6MB/s). If I only look at the speed and storage costs then LD is much better, but I don't have enough experience with LD to be able to say something about reliability. Can anyone comment on this? Thx.

I would like to see email marketing data to see what kind of content a business sends out, the frequency of sending, the number of people emailed, especially the resulting open rates and click through rates. Are businesses willing to share data on their previous email marketing campaigns without divulging their contact list? I would like to use this data to create an application to help businesses create better newsletters by using this data as a benchmark, basically sharing what works and what doesn't for each industry.

  • One-Way Backup Service? [closed]

    Up until a month ago, my girlfriend has used MobileMe to backup all the files on her MacBook. This turned out terribly when a quirk of MobileMe caused it to erase all of her files on MobileMe, and then sync the newly-erased MobileMe down to her computer, erasing everything. A week's worth of college essays and CS homework were gone. Now, I am terrified of any commercial cloud-backup solutions because of the possibility of this happening. Going off the list provided in these answers, could you please help me find a good backup service that is completely one-way? I want a service where there is literally not a single line of code that has the possibility of writing to my computer's drive. I want a pure one-way backup service.
